Disassembly:
1) First, unscrew the nut, which is indicated by the blue arrow, and remove the wire behind it, which is indicated by the green arrow, so that after the operation, the retractor relay can already be removed from the car and no wires will prevent this (But at the expense of removing the relay, a little later everything we’ll explain because there’s still a couple of bolts you need to unscrew, but if you just need to change it, then immediately skip all the points and read carefully the point number 3 in which everything is described), now unscrew the two nuts (Indicated by red arrows) of the coupling studs that hold the stator and then disconnect it from the front cover.

2) Now remove the three planetary gears of the gearbox from the starter (All of them are indicated by arrows), but you can only have three or four of them, if you still find four gears, then first pry the most central screwdriver and then remove it , then the remaining three and when they are removed, check their condition, the gears should not have chips, scuffs, corrosion and other damage, otherwise they are replaced with new ones.

After removing all the gears, there will be one more single and large one, called the ring gear, it also should not have chips and other defects, it can be removed either separately, for this you just need to pry it off with a screwdriver (see large photo), and together with the drive shaft, the drive lever and the lever support, for this you already need to pry it with the same screwdriver, but not by the gear itself, but by the support (see small photo), if you suddenly completely removed the entire drive, then first of all inspect it and make sure that the teeth on the drive are not painted in any other color and that there are no nicks and deformations on them, small defects are eliminated with a diamond file or an abrasive stone, if necessary, replace the entire drive or the entire starter with a new one!

3) With regards to removing the retractor relay, it has two bolts that secure it, they are also indicated by red arrows, so if you want to remove it, then unscrew these bolts and then gently pulling the relay (Indicated by the blue arrow), remove it from the starter and by the way, about checking it, connect an ohmmeter to the terminals of the traction relay and then drown the armature inward until it stops, while the ohmmeter readings should be close to zero, if everything is so with you, then the relay is working properly and does not require replacement.

4) Then take a wrench and a hammer and use them to knock down the travel limiter ring (see photo 1, do not forget to put another piece of wood or a piece of dense rubber under the drive so that it does not deform), as soon as the ring is knocked down, using a screwdriver, remove the other retaining ring from the groove and then remove it and then remove the travel stop ring from the shaft (see photo 2), then remove the drive from the shaft and when it is removed, pry the retaining ring and it with expanding tongs remove (see photo 3) and thus you will be able to disassemble the drive and replace worn parts in it, and finally, the remaining part with the shaft can also be disassembled if necessary, to do this, remove exactly the same retaining ring (see photo 4) and remove the thrust washer from the shaft, as well as the shaft support, and so on.

5) Next, using a flat screwdriver, pry and thereby remove the front cover (It is indicated by a green arrow), from the stator, and by the way, if the same central gear remains on the shaft when removing the stator, which is still indicated by a red arrow, then you remove it, otherwise you won’t be able to remove the cover, it will rest against this gear (Do not forget to check the gear, if signs of deformation are found on it, then replace it with a new one).

6) And finally, unscrew the two screws securing the stator cover (see photo 1) and then remove it, as soon as the cover is removed, use a screwdriver to pry off the starter brush assembly (see photo 2), then remove the one behind it the front shaft support (see photo 3) and the thrust washer as shown in the fourth photo and at the end, holding the shaft (It is also indicated by the arrow for clarity), overcoming the force of the magnets, remove the armature from the stator and after removing it, inspect its collector and winding , traces of charring and various kinds of deformations, should not be found on the armature windings, otherwise the armature changes to a new one, but if everything is in order with the winding, then proceed to cleaning the armature collector, namely, if it is heavily contaminated, then using sandpaper (Nulyovka), clean it, then rinse the starter anchor with water in which the detergent will be diluted and at the very end, when the work has already been done, clean the anchor with a clean rag dry from water and dirt and blow it with compressed air (Compressed air can be supplied by parts such as a compressor, tire pump, and so on).

Something else we wanted to warn you about, when the brush assembly is removed, check its brushes, the height of which should be at least 3.5 mm, and also the brushes should not have damage and other kinds of deformations, except for the brushes of the gearbox parts (These include all gears) and the drive with white spirit, rinse with all this and then you can proceed to reassemble the starter and install it on the car!

As a rule, the starter on a car of any brand performs one of the most important functions. This is a real electric motor, without which the car engine will not fully start.

So, let's start dismantling, but do not forget to remove the engine mudguard:

disconnect the negative wire from the battery;
disconnect the control wire from the starter traction relay;
with the key to “13”, we unscrew the nut of the “plus” wire on the relay:
we remove it;
with a key to “15” (it is rare and you can use the head), unscrew the 2 nuts that fix the starter with the clutch housing;

removal of the starter;
with a head on “10”, we unscrew the nut of the lower output of the traction relay;
we release the terminal of the wire tip;
with a head on “8”, we unscrew the two bolts on the traction relay;
we remove it.

Please note that the traction relay is connected to the front cover of the starter in a special way: there is a gasket between them. It is necessary to remove it and then remove the spring and the armature of the traction relay.
Go ahead:

with a key to “10”, two tie rods are unscrewed;
the anchor with studs and the stator are removed;
the armature shaft of the central gear is removed;
unscrew the two screws with a Phillips screwdriver;
remove the back cover;
remove the brush holder;
we pull out the anchor from the stator;
unscrew the adjusting washer from the armature axis;
remove the armature shaft support (this is done with a screwdriver or a thin metal rod).

This does not end the dismantling on a VAZ 2110 car. The starter, the repair of which is directly related to its complete dismantling and disassembly of parts, should be carefully inspected during the disassembly process.

we take out two tie rods with a small screwdriver (in principle, they do not need to be removed, it will be more convenient to remove the gearbox and drive);
we take out the three gears of the gearbox (the starter often fails precisely because these gears have damaged teeth or needle-type bearings - if this is the case, then the parts are replaced and the starter is checked for normal operation).

remove the support with the seal from the lever;

we separate the seal from the support (carefully inspect the support for damage or wear on the plastic surface - if it is deformed or the rubber gasket has hardened, it should be replaced);

we knock down the restrictive ring from the retaining ring (we work with a hammer and a suitable mandrel);

remove the retaining and restrictive ring (we act carefully so that they do not fly off and get lost).

We continue the disassembly with our own hands:

remove the drive assembly;
unscrew the retaining ring of the lever;
remove the lever with a leash and a washer;
using a screwdriver, unscrew the lever spring;
remove the lever from the eyeliner;
split them into halves.

We continue to work as required by the instruction:

remove the retaining ring of the gear with internal gearing;
remove the drive shaft support;
remove the ring from the support (you need to carefully inspect it for damage, deformation and hardening - if there are any, be sure to replace it).

remove the insert from the support;
unscrew two screws;
remove the brush holder;
pry the brush holders with a screwdriver;
we disassemble brushes, springs (we check everything carefully for damage and deformation, strong compression or curvature);
check the insulating gasket of the brushes (if it is torn, replace it).

Next, we carefully examine the anchor and collector.
Here you need to carry out several operations:

grind the anchor itself with a fine sandpaper (if roughness is noticeable or mica protrudes strongly, then it can be machined on a lathe);
if there are pits and potholes at the anchor, you need to replace the anchor (the price for it is decent, by the way);
check the reliability of the soldering of the anchor winding leads.

This completes the repair of the starter and assembles it in the reverse order.

In a new car, breakdowns and malfunctions in the starter are rare. But if the car has served for more than 5 years, then problems may arise. 8. In the next step, remove the drive side cover with gearbox and the same assembly.

9. The cover must also be removed from the side of the collector with brushes and brush holders.

10. Then remove the gear from the anchor shaft.

11. Remove the anchor itself from the starter.

12. The drive side washer is mounted on the armature shaft (pay special attention to this).

13. Using a screwdriver or other thin object, remove the anchor shaft support.

14. Then use a small screwdriver to remove the two tie rods from the starter cover. In general, it is not necessary to remove them, if you are in a hurry, you can leave them, however, it is more convenient to remove the drive and gearbox without these studs.

15. After that, remove the three gears of the gearbox.A starter failure may lie precisely in the fact that these gears have damaged, broken teeth or needle bearings embedded in the gears. If this deficiency is present, then replace the parts and the starter will work again.

16. But, if the gears are in order, then continue to disassemble and check the starter for damage further. From the cover, you need to remove the gearbox with the drive, after pressing the gear of the starter drive.

17. The support with the seal must be removed from the lever.

19. Using a suitable drift, tap the stop ring off the circlip with a hammer.

20. Carefully remove the retaining ring first, and then the restrictive one.

21. Remove the drive assembly from the drive shaft.

30. On the collector side, unscrew the two screws and remove the brush holder.

31. Use a screwdriver to pry out the brush holders.

32. Then remove these clips and their clamping springs. Again, deformed or damaged parts, heavily compressed or bent, torn springs should be replaced.

33. Remove the brushes themselves from the brush holder guides.

34. Uninsulated brushes must be removed.

35. Then remove the cardboard insulation pad. If it is damaged, compressed, torn, replace it with a new one.

36. Remove the insulated brushes with connecting bars.

37. Inspect the anchor carefully and in detail. Pay attention to the collector.

1. If the part is dirty, smoked, sand it with fine glass sandpaper. If traces of significant roughness are visible on it or micas protrude strongly, machine the part on a lathe and then grind the collector with fine sandpaper.

2. If traces of yellow coating from the bearing are visible on the anchor, then clean it with glass fine sandpaper, because later this can lead to jamming of the shaft gear. If there are gouges or nicks on the surfaces of parts such as trunnions and shaft splines, replace the entire armature. Pay attention to the winding on the ends of the anchor. If you see any flaws there, replace the anchor.

3. Check the reliability of the soldering of the armature winding leads to the collector plates.

38. Using a test lamp powered by 220 V alternating current, check the condition of the armature winding. Conduct lamp voltage to the collector plate and armature core. If everything is in order, the lamp should not burn. If it still burns, then the armature winding has shorted. In this case, simply replace the starter anchor with a new one.

39. While holding the overrunning clutch, turn the starter gear in both directions: the gear should move absolutely freely clockwise, and should not rotate counterclockwise at all. If something is broken, then replace the drive.

40. Then put the starter drive on the drive shaft. If everything is in order, then it should move freely, without jamming and stopping, along the splines of the shaft.

41. If you see that the drive parts are badly worn, deformed, damaged, replace the drive. If you find nicks in the crown of the gear teeth, sand them down with a fine-grained emery wheel. Choose a circle of small diameter.

42. Inspect the bushings in which the shafts rotate. They are installed in the drive side starter cover, manifold side, armature shaft support and drive side. If bushings are warped or burred, replace caps or supports with broken bushings. Cracked covers and supports should also be replaced.

43. Carefully inspect the starter itself, and if there are traces of anchor grazing on it, change the cover and intermediate support to a new one.

44. Worn brushes to a size between the working surface and the output of less than 3.5 mm, replace.

45. The brushes should move freely towards the brush holder. And the brush holder should not have cracks, chips, flaws. Check if this is the case. If everything is in order, then proceed to the next stage of repair. If there are defects, replace the parts.

46. Proceed to inspect the drive shaft. Its elements should not have traces of damage, severe wear and deformation. If there is plaque, remove it with glass fine sandpaper. Work carefully so as not to damage the parts.

47. By means of an ohmmeter check up, whether contact bolts of the traction relay are closed by a contact plate. If they do not close, replace parts or simply repair the relay.

48. To repair the relay:

1. Remove two screws.
2. Unsolder the relay windings and leads.
3. Then remove the cover, and clean the contacts and bolt heads with sandpaper. Assemble the relay in reverse order.

49. Now start assembling the starter. Before starting, lubricate the gear teeth with engine oil. Assemble the starter in reverse order.

50. Install the brush holder in the starter separately from the cover on the manifold side. To assemble and install this part, use a bushing whose diameter (mark 1) is equal to the diameter of the manifold (approximately 30 millimeters).

51. Install the assembled brush holder into the starter housing until it stops, then remove the sleeve and install the cover on the starter from the collector side. Repair completed.

And your starter for a VAZ car is like new again!

If the starter of the VAZ 2110 car does not turn, the driver needs to take all measures in order to restore its performance, since malfunctions of this element can have serious consequences.

The mechanism model 5702.3708 is mounted on the VAZ 2110, which is a DC motor containing two main components: a two-winding traction relay; planetary reductor. The excitation of this motor comes from permanent magnets. They are attached from the inside of the starter housing, made of steel. The specified body is connected to the covers (fastening is carried out using two pins).

The starter has an armature and a stator. The armature shaft rotates in cermet liners, from which the rotation goes through the planetary mechanism to the drive. When the starter is started, the car's battery supplies voltage to the relay windings. The armature, under the influence of a magnetic field, is retracted, after which the gear of the planetary mechanism engages with the flywheel, which causes the contact bolts in the device to close.

After that, the armature remains in the retracted state, and its fastening is provided exclusively by the holding winding. When the driver turns the key in the lock, this winding is de-energized. This causes the anchor to take its initial position.

Before you start disassembling the mechanism of the launch system that interests us, you should make sure that it does not work precisely because of its malfunction. The check is performed as follows:

We turn the gear in the direction of rotation of the armature. In the opposite direction, it should not rotate. If such reverse rotation is present, this indicates a malfunction of the starter.

We check the ease of movement of the device coupling along the shaft (we use a screwdriver). With a normally functioning mechanism, the clutch moves without the slightest difficulty.

Using the "lighting" wires and batteries, we analyze the health of the starter. To do this, we connect the negative terminal (black wire) to the starter housing, and connect the traction relay through its control cable to the positive terminal (red wire).

In cases where the relay is operating normally, the drive clutch extends, and a characteristic click is heard. If it does not turn on, you will have to disassemble the starter and replace the traction device.

Also, the starter of a VAZ 2110 car does not turn when its anchor does not work. The armature check is performed as follows: the cable is folded from the relay (from its output); connect the specified cable to the contact bolt. With a working anchor, the frequency of its rotation should be at least five thousand revolutions per minute. If the frequency is less, the starter does not work.

It is impossible to troubleshoot the starter without dismantling and disassembling it, so it has to be removed. The scheme of this procedure is given below: we recline the battery terminals; detach the cable connector from the relay; remove the wire marked "plus"; Disconnect the starter from the engine by unscrewing the fixing nuts.The mechanism has been dismantled, now you can start disassembling it by doing the following:

unscrew the nut on the relay and disconnect the traction device from the contact bolt;

remove the relay by unscrewing the two latches;

remove the relay anchor from the lever (it is necessary to slightly lift it up);

remove the starter cover (it is required to dismantle the studs).

After all these operations, it becomes possible to remove the mechanism cover: first, it is removed assembled with the drive and gearbox from the drive side, and then with the brushes and their holder from the collector side. Now you can remove the gear from the anchor shaft and get the anchor, and then dismantle the gears of the gearbox. If they have defects, the gears need to be replaced (it is because of them that the starter often does not turn).

Then, with some effort, we press on the drive gear and remove the gearbox from the cover. After that, we remove the support from the lever (it is equipped with a sealing element), check it for hardening and deformation. Very often the starter does not turn precisely because of such trifles. Just put another gasket, and you will forget about the inoperability of the starting system for a long time.

At the next stage of disassembly, using a mandrel, the restrictive ring should be removed from the retaining ring, then the drive, lever ring and the lever with the washer and leash, as well as the lever spring, are removed. Now you can remove the drive shaft support, gear, seal ring. Replacement of the last of these parts is necessary in cases where it has lost its elastic characteristics (or has obvious signs of deformation).

The brush holder is removed from the commutator side by removing two screws. The pressure springs and the entire brush assembly should be inspected, paying special attention to its stoppers. But you may have to “tinker” with the anchor, since it is often the reason that the “tens” starter does not turn (and replacing the bushings can take a lot of time). It is advisable to lightly grind the armature collector, and also machine it on a lathe if its roughness is high. The anchor is replaced when the beating in relation to the pins of its core is more than 0.08 millimeters. It is also recommended to put a new anchor in the presence of large nicks and burrs on it.

It may also be necessary to replace the bushings (the shafts rotate in them), which are located on the drive side in the cover of the trigger mechanism we are describing. The installation of new bushings is recommended if there are shells on them and if they are heavily worn. Starter assembly is carried out in reverse order.

Locate the nuts where the starter attaches to the gearbox housing. Unscrew them to remove the electric motor. Most often, motorists skip the top nut, do not forget about it.
After you remove the last nut, the starter can be removed with your bare hands.

If you do not want to repair this assembly, you can replace the remote electric motor with a new one. However, in order not to spend extra money, we recommend that you first inspect the starter and repair it, if possible.

If the traction relay is connected to the housing through a gasket, you must first remove this part, then remove the spring. Assess the condition of the relay, if necessary, clean the contacts and bolts. Take the tester and connect the "plus" to the flat contact, and the "minus" to the brushes. If you hear a click, then the relay is good. You can leave him alone. Smell the relay, if it has stopped working recently, you can smell burning.

A simple stripping of the contacts will suffice. Sometimes the relay problem is hidden in its contacts, in which case you can put a little tin on the washer.

After that, you can proceed to disassembly and repair:

With a 10 wrench, unscrew the two studs used for the tie.
Together with these studs, remove the armature connected to the stator.
Remove the central gear shaft from the anchor. Locate the two screws and remove them with a Phillips screwdriver.
Remove the back cover and remove the brush holder, after which it will not be difficult to remove the anchor.
On the axis of the anchor there is a special washer that regulates its operation. You need to remove it.
Using a thin flat-blade screwdriver or a metal rod, remove the armature shaft support.

The anchor must be lightly sanded with fine sandpaper. In some cases, it will have to be machined. If there are potholes on the surface of this part, a new anchor must be purchased. After you have assessed the integrity of all parts and carried out repairs, you should proceed to further disassembly:

Press the starter drive gear and remove the gearbox.
Remove the support together with the seal from the lever. Examine the support. The rubber gasket on it may be hardened. In this case, you need to replace it.
Carefully knock down the restrictive ring, it is located directly on the retainer. To do this, you need to take a hammer and a mandrel.After removing the restrictive ring, you need to remove the retaining ring.

Previously set aside brush holders must also be disassembled. We will not give detailed instructions, as it is not difficult at all. Pay attention to the presence of deformation and wear. The insulating gasket of the brushes is often torn, in which case it must be replaced. Also, the overrunning clutch (bendix) often fails, you just need to change it.

After repair, it is necessary to assemble the starter. To do this, proceed in reverse order. With the help of the instructions above, it will be easy for you to repair your car. If after the repair the starter still does not work, it is best to buy a new unit. In some cases, this is more appropriate, for example, when the anchor is out of order.
