Removing the steering wheel and restoring the loop airbag Passat b4

After replacing the steering wheel boot to the steering rack, I discovered that the airbag light came on.
In the course of eliminating the error, I remembered that after removing the steering wheel cross, I did not fix the steering wheel, but turned it a few turns. I heard a click in the steering wheel, I guessed that it had cut off the airbag train. When I began to troubleshoot, I decided to make a small photo report, it may be useful to someone. Sori for the quality, filmed on the phone.

First, remove the terminals from the battery (battery).

With an asterisk, unscrew the two captive bolts from the back of the steering wheel that secure the airbag.

Disconnect the loop from the pillow by disconnecting the red chip. Just detach it carefully, it can be removed very easily (prying it off with a screwdriver).

This is what a disabled pillow looks like.

Next, remove the plastic sheathing from below under the steering wheel, which is attached with two self-tapping screws. Disconnect the white chip (end of the train).

We unscrew the steering wheel with the head by 24.

This is how the removed steering wheel looks from the back, where the train (airbag contact ring) is located.

We unscrew the three Phillips screws that secure the airbag slip ring and disconnect the signal chip.

Video (click to play).

Disconnect the plastic latches, the ring is divided into two parts.

And now she found the reason. Loop break. The train broke off at the point where it exited the ring. There are only two copper strips (conductor) in the loop.

So that the train does not unwind and for the convenience of work, I wound it with electrical tape.

Next, we cut off the surfacing at the exit point of the loop and clean the loop. It is better to clean the loop with a heated soldering iron. At first I cleaned the train with a scalpel, but this turned out to be not very effective, because the scalpel removed the copper layer, and it is very thin there. That is why I heated it up with a soldering iron, the insulation is easily removed and the copper layer is not disturbed. Well, now we are soldering. This is how it happened. At the junction, I glued the train to the wall with superglue.

I sealed the seam with silicone.

Let it cool and check the loop with a tester. At first I was surprised because he was short-circuiting (closing), but the reason is in the white chip, when it is disconnected, the contacts in it are closed among themselves, and open when the chip is connected.

Putting everything together in reverse order.
Collecting everything completely. So the error did not disappear (the airbag accident light is on). Don't worry, this is normal. The error can only be erased with a diagnostic cable (VCDS, AVTOadapter, VAG-Com) and no disconnection of the battery terminals, as some write.

Attention .
When entering the airbag controller (with the VAG-Com program), read carefully.

I have a 1996 Passat b4 ADZ

Found 2 errors:
1. Airbag chain break.
2. Weak supply voltage to the airbag.
After erasing, we shout: "Hurray, everything worked."

After turning off the ignition, remove the “-” wire from the battery.

So that it does not accidentally connect, it makes sense to wrap it with electrical tape.

We unscrew the steering wheel to move in a straight line.

And turn the steering wheel 90 degrees counterclockwise

Now you need to unlock the steering column.

Then you can move the steering wheel towards you and down.

We fix it in this position.

We insert a screwdriver into the hole in the steering wheel.

We press the bottom of the retainer 10, releasing the node 3.

Then we move the pillow from the steering wheel and turn the steering wheel one hundred and eighty degrees, on the other side, doing a similar operation.

So, these steering wheels are of 2 types for our cars, or rather, with two options for a set of buttons:

To remove the steering wheel of the Volkswagen Passat B5, watch a video that reveals the problem of removing the steering wheel on the Passat with your own hands. It will allow you not only to speed up the procedure, but also to prevent common mistakes.

To remove the steering wheel of a Volkswagen Passat, the owner needs to use the usual set of keys and screwdrivers present in a special suitcase. Therefore, every owner will be able to cope with the task. You do not have to buy any additional accessories, thus you can save a lot of money on the purchase of pullers that you need only once.

For greater convenience, prepare the workplace in advance: put all the keys and screwdrivers there.

Only the preliminary removal of the airbag from the steering wheel of the Passat will help to remove the wheel itself. Otherwise, the pillow will shoot. Don't forget this!

Before starting the procedure, insert the key into the ignition and align the wheels of the car as if you want to drive perfectly straight

  1. Switch off the ignition.
  2. Remove the negative terminal from the battery. If you don't want it to accidentally hit the battery, wrap it with duct tape.
  3. The steering wheel must be turned 90 degrees counterclockwise. Thus, the side knitting needles will "hang" vertically.
  4. The steering column will be locked and must therefore be unlocked.
  5. There is a hole in the rear of the steering wheel, inside of which is the airbag block retainer. By pressing a screwdriver, the steering column block will come out a little from the steering wheel.
  6. There is also a similar hole on the opposite side of the handlebars. Unscrew the steering wheel 180 degrees clockwise to further tighten the rest of the block.
  7. By aligning the steering wheel, you can remove the block.
  8. Disconnect all wiring that leads to the pillow. Next, remove the steering wheel and airbag, it must be placed face up on the Volkswagen Passat B5.
  9. Next, you can see another pair of wires that connect to the steering angle sensor. It must be disconnected from the connector.
  10. By unscrewing the bolt on the right side, the steering wheel can be removed.

To install the steering wheel in place, follow all the operations in reverse order.

To replace the steering wheel of the Passat B5, you can see the removal in the video below. It shows the disassembly process in detail and gives practical advice on how to install a new steering wheel. The procedure usually takes 15-20 minutes to complete, no more.

Here we have selected a few more examples of removal for other models of this brand.
