The range of application of gypsum board for apartment renovation is very wide. It can be used to level walls, make a ceiling, equip door and window slopes, and much more. At the same time, the low cost of the material and the simplicity of its processing make gypsum plasterboard very popular. In our article, we will talk about how to make repairs with drywall, as well as technologies for restoring damaged structures from gypsum plasterboard.

GKL - a material with a very wide range of applications

When they mention the repair of an apartment with plasterboard, they most often mean exactly the alignment of the walls with the help of sheathing from gypsum plasterboard sheets. This technology has gained its popularity due to the fact that the use of plasterboard allows you to quickly and efficiently hide almost any irregularities in the wall.

At the same time, the result of the work is a smooth and even surface, ideal for any finish.

Wall leveling frame

How is the alignment of the walls with plasterboard performed?

The technology is quite simple:

  • First, the wall must be cleaned of old wallpaper or wall panels, and also all shelves, brackets, sockets, switches, etc. must be removed from it.
  • After that, the surface of the wall is treated with an antifungal compound - it will protect the space under the plasterboard sheathing from the spread of mold.
  • The next step is to mark the wall for the crate. With the help of a level, we draw vertical lines on the wall, along which we attach the racks to the buoy.
On the floor and on the ceiling, draw horizontal lines that determine the distance from the wall to the sheathing.
  • Then, according to the markings, we begin to mount the plasterboard crate. First, we attach the starting profile around the perimeter of the room, and then we install vertical racks on the brackets (see the video attached to the articles of this section of the site).
By connecting the post profiles with the starting ones, we securely fix the crate and give it the necessary rigidity.

When the lathing is ready, you can start sheathing.

Advice!
Our impromptu renovation school strongly recommends installing plasterboards vertically.
This is due to the fact that the main load falls on the horizontal seams between the sheets of gypsum board, which means that you need to place the material in such a way that these seams are as small as possible.

  • Plasterboard boards cut to the size of the room are fastened to the crate with self-tapping screws.
  • So that when fastening the screws do not break through the cardboard, you can use a special nozzle on the screwdriver bit (pictured).
It acts as a limiter and does not allow the self-tapping screw to go deep into the plate.

The final stage of wall repair using gypsum boards is leveling for finishing. We glue the seams between the sheets of drywall with a polymer reinforcing mesh, after which we process the seams and the entire surface of the wall with putty.

In addition to leveling the walls of drywall, you can make a suspended ceiling. Such a ceiling is a structure made of gypsum plasterboard sheets, fixed on a metal frame for drywall.

The instructions for making a suspended plasterboard ceiling with your own hands are quite simple:

  • We start with the layout of the premises.First, along the perimeter of the entire room, stepping back from the ceiling 100-150 mm, draw a base line using a level.
  • Then, on the ceiling itself, we apply markings with a step of 600 mm - along which we will fix the main ceiling profiles.
  • After marking, we proceed to assembling the frame. Along the baseline, we fix the starting ceiling profile for drywall, making sure that all the panels are placed at the same level.
  • Then we fix suspensions made of metal U-shaped plates to the ceiling according to the applied markings.
  • Bending the edges of the suspensions downwards, we fix the main profiles on them, thereby forming the plane of our ceiling. We put the edges of the main profiles into the starting groove and fix them with a self-tapping screw or special pliers for galvanized metal.
  • We cover the finished ceiling frame with plasterboard and level it with putty using the same technology as the walls.

Another use for drywall that can be found in an apartment during renovation is for finishing window slopes.

Note!
The restoration of slopes may be required both during major repairs and after replacing old wooden windows with metal-plastic ones.
In this case, an inexpensive and easy-to-handle drywall is almost irreplaceable!

Window slopes from gypsum plasterboard are made as follows:

Fastening the starter profile to the frame

  • We measure the window opening with the installed window. According to the dimensions obtained, we cut out the necessary panels from the gypsum board.
  • We fix the starting F-shaped profile on the window frame with the help of glue “liquid nails” or self-tapping screws-“bugs”. This profile is designed for plastic panels, but it is also great for gypsum plasterboard.
  • Fill the profile groove with acrylic sealant.
  • We apply mineral wool insulation to the wall. The size of the insulation is selected so that it occupies the entire space between the wall and the slope.
  • Apply glue for gypsum boards to the profile panel, after which we insert one edge of the panel into the groove of the starting profile. We press the drywall to the window opening, while leveling it.
  • After installing all parts of the slope, we process the joints with putty and paint the slope with interior paint.

Advice!
For slopes, it is better to use moisture-resistant drywall, since it is more resistant to getting wet, as well as mold.

The popularity of drywall as a finishing material leads to the fact that more and more gypsum plasterboard structures appear in our houses and apartments. And these structures, along with all others, periodically require repair - especially since the gypsum is not very durable.

Below we will tell you how to repair drywall with the most common damage:

  • If a small (up to 25-30 mm in diameter) hole is punched in the plasterboard wall, then it can simply be covered with putty.
To do this, first remove all damaged areas of the gypsum board, after which we fill the hole with a plaster-based putty with a wide spatula. After the filler has dried and sanded, paint can be applied to the damaged area.
  • If the hole has significant dimensions, then the repair of the plasterboard wall is carried out with the replacement of a fragment. To do this, cut out the damaged area, and in its place we glue a piece of plasterboard of the same shape. Further, as in the first case, putty and surface cleaning are performed.
  • When sealing holes larger than 10 cm, before inserting a new fragment from the seamy side of the gypsum board, you can attach several plywood strips with self-tapping screws.
These strips will play the role of an improvised lathing and will not allow the damage to expand when the skin is deformed.

Replaced fragment putty

Cracks are a separate category of damage to drywall structures.

You can also deal with them in several ways:

  • If a crack appeared on the inner corner, then first apply a thin layer of putty to the corner itself, and then apply a serpentine tape.Using a putty knife to seal the corners, press the serpyanka into the filler, removing excess material. After 24 hours, the treated area can be putty and painted.
  • We also seal the crack at the junction with a putty mixture. To do this, first remove the damaged reinforcing tape, then apply a gypsum composition, and then glue the joint again with tape.

As you can see, repairing walls with plasterboard, as well as restoring structures from gypsum plasterboard, can be done quite simply and quickly. At the same time, the low labor intensity of the repair process and the relatively affordable cost of finishing materials allow you to take on such repairs yourself, without involving outside people!
