Buyers want to know the purpose of the food waste disposer. When washing dishes and vegetables with fruits, particles of household waste may enter the sink drain. To avoid pushing them manually, you need a food waste disposer. This avoids getting your hands dirty and clogging the sink siphon. Some users feel that the device is dangerous in everyday use. The device is designed in compliance with all safety requirements. The design provides for the presence of a protective fence and a special pusher to prevent injury. Most of the fears of using shredders are unfounded. They have a simple structure and allow you to repair them yourself with minimal knowledge of the design.
The household waste shredder is a massive cylindrical body with a motor and is suspended under the sink, replacing the siphon. The device will allow you to turn household waste into a paste, which is washed off by running water into a drain. In terms of dimensions, a household waste shredder is the size of a bottle of drinking water available on the shelves of a supermarket. The mass is also approximately equal. It is important for homeowners to know the dimensions of the appliance in order to understand the space available for mounting the shredding device.
This unit is installed under the sink instead of a siphon using a standard plumbing connection.
Installation of shredders in the case of steel sinks does not require the use of special tools. If the dimensions do not match, the drain hole is expanded to the desired size. Do it yourself or invite a master. After that, the installation is carried out according to the instructions. Self-repair of the device is possible when familiarizing with its design and performing actions in accordance with the technical documentation of the device.
Features of food waste disposers:
The product enters the grinder and is broken into a fine porridge by cams fixed to a rotating disc. If metal parts, foreign objects or a wedding ring get inside the working unit, turn off the device to avoid damage to it. The shredder is difficult to damage. The body is made of elastic plastic resistant to shock loads and other mechanical influences.
It is required to familiarize yourself with the main structural elements of the grinding mechanisms for self-repair.
- Most of the devices belong to the I class of electrical safety. The power wire is equipped with a grounding terminal (three pins in foreign versions). When connecting, you must observe safety measures. The house requires a ground loop. The plastic housing of the grinder protects against electric leakage. The device should be inspected regularly for damage to the case. If threads with wire accumulate inside, then the sealing gland under the disc becomes unusable. Water begins to seep into the interior of the appliance. This will lead to a short circuit in the motor wiring, accompanied by its failure.
- Performing verification operations to identify foreign objects in the shredding device begins with a visual inspection of the device. If you suspect a malfunction, you need to dismantle the shredder and clean it. For this, the device is disconnected from the power supply. A flashlight can be used to detect foreign parts and quarrels in the cooking compartment. In case of disc blocking, there is a way to manually turn the shaft by using a socket wrench. As a result of such manipulations, the problem can be eliminated and the mechanism restored to work.
- A slight actuation of the pneumatic tube means that the tube is likely to be damaged. Localize the leak by any method and restore the integrity of the path. Take the trouble to use moisture resistant glue. Replacing the button will require some knowledge of the structure of the mechanism and experience in carrying out such operations.
If there are leaks, they must be repaired by using a special sealing material. This applies to the debris inlet and the dirty water outlet.
If there are children in the house, unplug the appliance from the outlet. Alternatively, provide a method to block the power consumption of the appliance. If children throw waste at the drain and turn on the water, it won't go away. This will encourage it to accumulate in the sink. An additional safety measure will be the installation of a leakage protection.
To skeptics, so many protective measures will seem superfluous. Ensuring the safety of human health is of prime importance. All recommended safety systems should be installed. Correct operation of the shredder will eliminate the occurrence of serious malfunctions and complex repairs. This will allow you to independently correct possible inconsistencies in the device. The interest in household shredders is growing. Spare parts for them are sold by specialized stores.
The food waste in the trash can, left over from the evening, does not smell at all in the morning - this is understandable for the child. But it is not always possible to put them in the trash immediately after cooking. And sometimes the desire fails. How to be and what to do in order to avoid an unpleasant smell in the morning? As it turns out, there is a fairly simple solution. You just need to install a food waste shredder for the sink and "voila", all of them, in a ground form, rush into the sewer without any danger of blocking the pipe. Today we will consider the principle of operation of such a device, as well as try to understand whether it is possible to install it with our own hands.
The principle of operation of a household waste grinder for the kitchen can be compared with an electric blender, with the only difference that it is much more powerful. The knives in its body rotate, grinding any food waste. Even chicken bones do not become a hindrance for them. As a result, a mushy mass is obtained, which, together with the water entering the sink drain, goes into the sewer drain. Due to the fact that the waste is ground very finely, it cannot clog the drain. As a result, the hostess gets rid of more than half of all garbage, moreover, the remaining, non-food, does not spread unpleasant odors around.
Modern dispensers operate almost silently while ensuring maximum user safety. In addition, most of them have a protective automatics that cuts off the power of the device when a foreign solid object, such as a knife, spoon or fork, gets into it. In this case, the kitchen chopper cannot be turned on until the item has been removed.
Such devices came to Russia relatively recently, although they have been used in Europe and America for more than 20 years. All shredders can be divided into 2 types:
- Mechanical. These dispensers are driven by a stream of water. They are quite productive and can handle even hard objects such as an ear of corn. Their main advantage, in addition to power, is their quiet operation. Safety is beyond praise - even with a great desire, it will not be possible to touch the knives through the drain. They are located very deep;
- Electrical. These sink shredders work a little differently. Waste in them is crushed using small hammers, which, as it were, crush the garbage. These devices have several disadvantages - noisy operation, power consumption, and inability to cope with more solid waste.
However, in fairness, it should be noted that mechanical disposers work the more powerful, the stronger the flow of water from the tap. This can be a real problem for some homeowners and tenants on the upper floors of apartment buildings. We are talking about those who quite often have a drop in pressure in the water supply system.
Helpful information! A rather serious advantage of an electric grinder can be called the fact that it is turned on only when it is necessary, in contrast to a mechanical one, which starts working with the inclusion of water.
Having dealt with the type of the disposer, is it possible to go to the choice of the model and run to buy? It was not there! There are a few more nuances to consider.
When choosing an electric kitchen waste disposer in the sink, you should pay attention to the length of the power button wire. If it is short enough, it will be quite problematic to install it. And to cut the wire and build it up means automatically losing the right to warranty service.
You should also pay attention to the simplicity of disassembling and assembling the device. After all, it should be washed at least occasionally. The number of service centers is also important, and preferably not far from the place of residence. This indicates how quickly it will be possible to get the help of specialists in the event of an emergency situation.
In order to make it easier for a respected reader to understand such an extensive range of models from various manufacturers presented on Russian shelves, we tried to compile a rating of the most interesting proposals in terms of price / quality / functionality ratio. Perhaps this will help someone make the right choice, or at least in general terms, understand which shredder is needed.
Today one of the most famous manufacturers of such equipment from the United States. Its lineup is quite wide. Let's try to consider some of them with their technical characteristics.
As you can see, the cost is considerable. However, these shredders are in great demand, due to their quality and durability.
The models of this manufacturer are noticeably cheaper, which does not affect the quality of its products. The brand has quite a lot of fans among the population of Russia and the CIS.
And again, the prices for the products are quite high, although in Russia this company has not yet been promoted too much. But the disposers are pretty high quality. Let's see what the characteristics are.
It is unclear what their pricing policy is, but prices are clearly overpriced.
It can be seen that the Czech manufacturer keeps prices at a more acceptable level. Of course, there are other brands on Russian counters as well. They are quite capable of competing with those presented in our rating. However, their models are less popular, and today we chose the most famous, despite the cost.
Usually such equipment is quite safe. It will not be possible to shove a hand into it even with a strong desire, however, it is worth noting that the drain hole of the sink should be closed if there are small children in the house.
Very important! It's half the trouble when pencils and felt-tip pens are in the grinder - it's fixable. It should be understood that the handle of a small child is rather thin and can sometimes get stuck where it, in principle, could not get through!
It is also worth noting that you need to be careful with electric shredders. Household voltages are life-threatening. This means that you should monitor the integrity of the wiring, as well as maintain it correctly, avoiding mechanical damage to the insulation.
We talked about the basic safety rules when operating grinders for washing, but there are still some nuances. It must be remembered that if an electric dispenser is used, then at the slightest smell of burning electrical wiring, smoke or sparks, you must immediately disconnect it from the network and call the wizard. Do not open the chopper yourself and try to understand what happened. Especially if you do not have the skills to work with electrical equipment.
Important! If a person laid electrical wiring under the strict guidance of a professional, this does not mean that he will be able to repair the electric motor of the disposer or understand the reason for its failure.
There are a lot of reviews on food waste disposers for the sink on the network. But the most interesting thing is that no matter how much we look, we could not find negative reviews, which means we will be content with what we have:
Corsica, Russia, NN: We have a model 100. Bought according to the reviews of my friends - they have the same model. We were already familiar with this thing in the states, after that we wanted it for ourselves. The price was scary, of course. BUT, I really wanted to. Made in the USA she has. We were scared of what China is doing, checked the codes - states. We installed everything ourselves without any problems - it has everything in the kit: hoses, a button. Only for overflow, they bought a hose for a washing machine and connected it to the outlets of the grinder. We grind everything on the list in it - and there are a lot on the list: from vegetables and fruits to bones ...
More details on otzovik:
This was a review of In Sink Erator 100, in case anyone hadn't guessed. Well, for the full picture, one more:
Nmjkio, Russia, Moscow: I put this particular model, as it was top-end. I never regretted it. It even grinds beef bones. There is no more smell from the bucket. The pneumatic button fell apart in the third year of use (the rubber element inside was torn). I replaced it with an electronic one, it is much more reliable and more convenient - no need to press hard. Otherwise, everything is good, it certainly costs its money.
Advantages: Reliable, the child can handle the installation. Does not clog.
Disadvantages: It happens that large pieces such as onion peels slip through and do not pass into the corrugation on the plum.
More details on otzovik:
Nevertheless, we added a small fly in the ointment ...
There are no problems with the installation of such equipment. All you need to do is follow the instructions exactly and act in accordance with it. The installation of the disposer will not take much time. The only thing that can come in handy is the skills of installing or even simply cleaning the siphon under the sink in order to understand how to connect the drain hoses.
But the home master is unlikely to be able to cope with the repair. Of course, if a foreign object is stuck inside and does not allow the knives to rotate, then this trouble can be eliminated on your own. But if the electric motor burns out, nothing can be done. There are 2 ways here. If there is a guarantee - straight to the service. Well, if it has already ended, we either pay for the repair to specialists, or (if we have knowledge and skills) we determine the malfunction and acquire a new part, instead of the burnt one, which we install.
You can buy a disposer at any home appliance store or via the Internet. In our time, it has become quite fashionable due to the fact that the cost of goods in this case is always lower. Plus, the online retailer often provides free home delivery. Despite the fact that you don't even have to get up from your computer desk to make a purchase, this method seems quite attractive. However, there are also pitfalls here.
Useful advice! Before paying for an online purchase, try to find out as much as possible about the seller and his store. Read customer reviews. You need to be sure that you get exactly what you purchased.
The food waste disposer is really a very necessary and useful device that makes the housewife's work easier. And if you hear from someone that this is not so, then you should know that this is said by a person who did not use it.
We hope that the information presented today was useful to our dear reader. And if you still have questions, our team will be happy to answer them in the discussion to this article. We also ask you to write about what other topics would be of interest to you - we will definitely cover them.

The interest in household shredders is growing. Spare parts for them are sold by specialized stores.
Once considered a "luxury item" food waste disposer (can be called a food waste disposer, disposer, disposer), capable of crushing and sending vegetable leftovers, small bones, fruit seeds, even paper napkins down the drain, has now become a daily necessity. The device can be connected to a standard sink, but it is more convenient to have a small sink next to the main sink for cleaning and preparing food. For installation of a standard shredder food waste (IPO) sink drain hole should have a diameter of 89 (90) mm - more than a standard sink. There are also corresponding adapters. The IPOs described here are typical devices of this type, but they may not coincide in all parameters with your shredder.
The shredder is equipped with a powerful vertical motor. The motor shaft sets in motion a special mechanism that grinds waste to sizes that freely pass through the domestic sewage system. The grinding mechanism is housed in a robust sealed housing connected to a conventional drain pipe and siphon.
Rice. one Waste chopper device
Older IPOs are usually equipped with cutting blades mounted directly on the motor shaft. When the appliance is turned on, the blades begin to rotate at high speed and crush whatever falls on them. The modern apparatus has a rotating disc with rotating incisors on its upper surface. The disc surrounds a stationary knife with several blades. The cutters crush the largest debris and guide them to the ring of stationary blades. Most IPOs are equipped with overcurrent thermal switches that turn off the device when the cutters are blocked. The thermal cut-out is usually reset manually.
Most problems with IPO arise from improper use of the device.
- Before starting the grinding process, a cold water tap must be open, which must be closed only a few minutes after the end of the grinding process.
- Appliance seizures are most often caused by utensils, bottle caps or bones hitting the appliance. To reduce the risk of accidental items falling into the IPO, insert a plug into the sink drain hole when the device is not in use.
Rice. 2 Insert a plug into the sink drain hole when the machine is not in use.
- Do not pour bleach or corrosive cleaning agents into a sink equipped with a chopper. The substances they contain can damage the seals of the machine, including the shaft seal. If the shaft seal is depressurized, water will enter the motor and can damage it or create a short circuit. Replace the oil seals at the slightest sign of motor shaft seal leakage.
- The shredder is generally capable of handling grease and oil, but it is still better to throw most of them in the trash can.
The shredder can create an unpleasant odor if you forget to rinse the waste out of it. Clean the appliance by passing a handful of ice cubes with sliced lemon through the appliance.
Rice. 3 Clean the crusher with ice cubes and lemon slices
If a foreign object gets into the working chamber, it will almost certainly block the shredding working unit. Switch off the device and unplug it from the socket. Unscrew the retaining nut.
- Some models come with a hex wrench to turn the motor shaft while removing the obstruction. Insert the wrench into the slot in the base of the appliance and turn the wrench back and forth until the chopping mechanism is free to rotate at least one full turn.
Rice. 4 Turn the disc with the Allen key
- The set of other models includes a special wrench with which you can turn the motor shaft through the sink drain hole. If your shredder did not have one, try using a sturdy wooden spoon to rotate the shredding head.
Rice. 5 Or twist it with a wooden spoon
- When the working unit is unlocked, use tweezers or narrow nose pliers to remove the foreign object from the working chamber and reconnect the shredder to the power supply. You may need to press the reset button of the thermal switch to turn on the appliance.
Rice. 6 Remove the foreign object blocking the device
If there is no blockage or blockage of the working unit or other visible problems, then the electric motor may be faulty. Go to a workshop to have it checked - but repairing or replacing the engine may not be economical.
Check the fuse in the plug or in the connecting device. If other devices in the same circuit stop working, check the shield: if there is a blown fuse or a tripped circuit breaker or RCD.
Objects such as a bottle cap or a teaspoon falling into the grinding chamber can seriously damage the appliance. Turn it off immediately before the work unit jams. Then unscrew the sink drain. Unplug or turn off the power before trying to remove the foreign object.
If possible, remove the splash shield or gently move it aside to look into the working chamber.
Rice. 7 Remove splash guard
Use tweezers or narrow nose pliers to remove the foreign object. Keep your fingers away from the cooking compartment.
Rice. eight Remove the foreign object
A loud buzzing or humming sound may be produced by a stalled motor trying to crank a partially blocked work unit. Switch off the appliance and check for foreign objects in the cooking compartment (see above), then press the reset button of the thermal switch.
Similar symptoms can occur when the motor bearings are worn out - therefore, if there are no signs of blocking of the working unit, then contact the service to check the electric motor itself.
Not passing recycled waste with water can be the result of a simple blockage in the drain pipe from the shredder.
If you have a double sink and the chopper is installed under the small compartment, check that the large compartment is draining normally. If normal, this means that the sink is draining without interference. However, when water does not drain well from both sides of the sink, the blockage is likely somewhere in the common part of the drain pipe from the sink.
If the blockage only affects the sink compartment with a shredder, unplug it or turn off the power supply and place a bucket or basin under the siphon.
- Disconnect the siphon from the grinder and drain pipe, rinse it in another compartment of the sink. If you find large pieces of food waste, check for damage to the shredding unit.
Rice. 9 Remove the siphon and rinse it
- Crochet one end of the piece of wire and use it to clean the straight section of the pipe after the siphon.
Rice. 10 Clean the straight section of the sewer outlet pipe
- Remove the outlet fitting from the IPO and check for a blockage inside the chopper.
Rice. eleven Check if there is any blockage inside
Collect the plumbing, connect the IPO and turn on the water to find out if the blockage has been removed. If not, call a plumber to check and clean the sewers further down the system.
If it seems to you that the device chops food waste for too long, or if a blockage is found due to large fragments of waste, then the working chopping unit may be damaged due to the fact that some foreign object has got into the working chamber. Check the camera (see above).
- Disconnect the shredder from the sink (in the example shown here, the IPO is fastened with a clamp). These devices are quite heavy, so be prepared for this when disconnecting.
Rice. 12 0disconnect the IPO from the sink
- Remove the bolts or screws securing the working chamber from the IPO body.
Rice. thirteen Remove the fixing screws or bolts
- Inspect the chopping unit for signs of serious damage - and try swinging the disc from side to side to check that it is securely attached to the shaft.
Rice. 14 Check that the disk is securely fastened
- Check that the cam cutters are free to rotate. If it turns out that any of the parts needs to be replaced, take the shredder to a workshop.
Rice. 15 Make sure the cutters can turn
If a leak is found, completely disconnect the device from the power supply and do not use it until the problem is completely resolved or the device is replaced.
Vibration can weaken the attachment to the sink, in which case the gaskets in this area may start to leak.
- Typically, you can feel the leak around the clamp.
Rice. sixteen Water can flow under the clamp
- Disconnect the shredder, then loosen all fixing screws and tighten the drain fixing nut. If this does not stop the leak, buy new gaskets.
Rice. 17 Tighten the drain fixing nut
A less likely leak is the gasket between the chamber and shredder housing.
- Check for a leak at this location. Disconnect the IPO and separate the working chamber.
Fig. 18 Check for leaking gasket
- Install a new gasket, making sure it fits snugly around its entire circumference.
Rice. nineteen Install a new gasket
The soft gasket between the plastic square and the shredder can start leaking, especially if you have used strong chemical drainage solutions.
- Water dripping from the fitting is a sign that the gasket is worn.
Rice. twenty Is the gasket leaking?
- Unscrew the hold-down pad and remove the fitting together with the gasket.
Rice. 21 Remove the drain fitting
Make sure the new gasket is snug and the fitting is correctly positioned, and replace the hold-down pad. Tighten the fastening screws alternately so that the gasket is pressed evenly.
Water dripping from the middle of the lower base plate of the device indicates a possible violation of the seal between the electric motor and the working chamber. To check this, contact a service specialist - if such a leak is detected not too late, then the repair may be fully justified.
Rice. 22 If water leaks in the center of the base board, contact the service
Make sure the plug is plugged into an outlet and that there is power at the outlet. If the IPO is included in a fused connecting device, then make sure that it is energized.
If your shredder uses a collapsible plug, remove the plug cover and check that the cord conductors are connected correctly.
Replace the fuse in the plug. If a fuse fuse interconnect is used, check if the fuse needs to be replaced there.
If other devices in the same circuit stop working, check the shield: if there is a blown fuse or a tripped circuit breaker or RCD.
Protection can be triggered both due to blocking of the chopping unit, and due to a failure of the electric motor. It usually takes 5-10 minutes for the engine to cool down and the protection can be reset.
Having determined and eliminated the cause of the protection operation, reconnect the device to the power supply and press the protection reset button.
On some models, the reset button is located at the bottom of the shredder.
Rice. 24 Sometimes the reset button is located at the bottom of the shredder
If you have ruled out all other possibilities, then contact the service to check the electric motor.
- If the appliance cord is equipped with a fused plug, check that the plug is correctly connected and that the fuse is correct.
- Never allow your fingers to be inside the chopper.
- Be sure to disconnect the plug from the outlet before troubleshooting.
- If you are not sure about the reliability of the power outage, contact the service technician. Do not risk it in any way.
- To check the grinder grounding, touch one tester probe to the ground terminal of the plug, and the other to an unpainted metal surface of the housing. The tester indicator will show if the metal parts of the instrument are grounded. If the tester does not respond, use the services of a specialist to check the IPO.
- If the shredder is connected to a fused coupler or cord entry, perform the same grounding test, but instead of touching the plug ground, touch the tester probe to one of the connector or cord entry faceplate (cover) mounting screws. These screws are connected to the ground of the device, and the indicator on the tester will show if there is contact between the ground of the device and the ground of the connecting device.
- When reassembling the appliance, ensure that all parts and wires are returned to their original position.
- Before resuming use, check the device: insert its plug into the circuit protected by an RCD, and then turn it on. If the RCD trips, contact a specialist to check the device.
