Kia rio do it yourself steering rack repair

In detail: cue rio do-it-yourself steering rack repair from a real master for the site my.housecope.com.

Most modern cars use a rack and pinion mechanism to transmit the rotational motion of the steering wheel to the wheels. As practice shows, it is much more reliable than, for example, a worm gear, which can still be found on a number of cars of the last century.

The design of the rack and pinion mechanism is simple, which provides it with high reliability: the rotation of the steering wheel by means of the steering shaft is transmitted to a gear wheel (or simply a gear), which is connected directly to the rack through a gear train. The gear, rotating, pushes the rack to the right or to the left - depending on the direction of rotation of the steering wheel, and the rack, in turn, acts on the tips that turn the front wheels of the car.

The two main troubles that can happen with this mechanism are:

  • the formation of backlash at any of the stages of the transmission of the steering wheel to the wheels;
  • jamming of the gear train between the gear and the rack.

In the first case, driving will be very difficult, since the car will stop instantly responding to the steering wheel rotation - before the wheels start turning, the driver will have to rotate the wheel “idle” by some angle depending on the amount of backlash. Traffic rules prohibit the operation of the car if the so-called total backlash of the steering system exceeds 10 degrees.

In this case, the repair of the Kia Rio steering rack will consist in disassembling the entire mechanism, determining its most worn out elements and replacing them with new ones.

The reason for the backlash most often lies in the wear of the parts of the moving joints. If this wear is not great, then you can get rid of backlash simply by adjusting the mechanism. But if some of the parts are worn out enough, you cannot do without replacing them.

At the first sign of play in the steering system, contact a car service as soon as possible. In the early stages of its appearance, you can cope with it without replacing components.

Do not forget that backlash tends to grow like a cancerous tumor, and it is precisely this that is the main reason for the accelerated wear of parts.

So, if, after parking the car on the asphalt, an oil stain forms under its hood, it is likely that the rail has "leaked". First of all, check the integrity of the oil seals. And if the leak is accompanied by a backlash, even if it is small, contact a car service for diagnostics of the steering rack - the sooner you do this, the more likely it is that parts replacement will not be required to eliminate the malfunction.

A jammed steering wheel is a very bad symptom. Unfortunately, thanks to the power steering on the Kia Rio, the driver may not immediately detect this malfunction. So, a sudden crunch that was heard when turning the steering wheel, or difficult rotation of the steering wheel - this is most likely the result of a foreign object falling between the guide gear and the rack.

The consequences of this can be the most sad: breakage or deformation of the rack or pinion teeth. The symptoms of this malfunction are as follows:

  • knocking and vibration felt during the rotation of the steering wheel;
  • a sudden play in the steering column;
  • Difficulty turning the steering wheel.

If one or two teeth are damaged on the rail or gear, the car will not completely lose control - the car designers took care of maximizing the safety of both the car and the driver. However, the play in the steering system will be so strong that the driver will have to literally “catch the road”.So it’s better not to risk it, but to deliver the car to the car service on a tow truck.

Repair of the steering rack Kiya Rio, like any other mechanisms and systems of the car, begins with diagnostics. The vehicle is installed on the lift in such a way that nothing interferes with the turns of its front wheels. The master, turning the steering wheel in one direction or the other, monitors how the wheels respond to his actions, and listens, trying to catch the extraneous sounds that arise during this. At this stage, the type of steering malfunction is determined.

Then the rail is removed from the car, disassembled, its components are cleaned of contamination, and the master finds the specific cause of the breakdown - a failed element.

It is better if it is a native Kia part or an analogue made by an official manufacturer. It is not worth purchasing inexpensive spare parts from disassembly or products of dubious origin - the former have already developed part of their resource, and the quality of the latter leaves much to be desired.

If the teeth are broken on the rail or guide gear, then you cannot do without replacing the failed parts.

Our car service always has in stock all the necessary spare parts for the repair of the Kia Rio rail. Working directly with their manufacturers, we are able to keep the best prices for spare parts, as well as prices for working with a car.

All this allows us to repair steering racks quickly, efficiently, and at very competitive prices.

Any technique breaks, nothing is perfect. There are both minor and significant breakdowns. Of course, when, for example, a crack has formed in the bumper, you can take your time to change it. A completely different matter is the problem of steering, on which the life of the driver and the lives of other road users depends.

In practice, a breakdown of the KIA Rio steering rack is not uncommon: in Russia, the quality of roads and the responsibility of drivers for the competent operation of the car still leaves much to be desired. The KIA Rio rail usually falls into disrepair simply because its service life has expired. Therefore, it is recommended to inspect the rail at least 2 times a year. The detected signs of unstable work should alert you. These are: the appearance of an unfamiliar knock in the steering wheel of the kia rio or in the suspension itself, noise in the power steering pump, oil leakage, difficult turning of the steering wheel and play in the steering wheels.

KIA Rio repair is a set of mandatory technological measures carried out to restore the full performance of the car's steering.
It can be done in three ways:
  • The first is to thoroughly clean the system from all contaminants in the rack mechanism. Dust and moisture can not only seriously impair the performance of the rail, but also cause significant damage.
  • The second one is applicable if minor malfunctions of individual elements are diagnosed or the couplings and seals have become unusable. Here, the system is also cleaned with the replacement of all worn out or damaged parts of the structure.
  • Third, this is not so much fixing the rails themselves, but replacing them with new designs from kia rio. For the price, this method is the most expensive, it is used when there is no other way out. However, such a replacement will significantly extend the life of the vehicle.

Repair of the rack and pinion mechanism KIA Rio 2011 and 2012. start after technical diagnostics. Check for defectiveness is carried out by its complete disassembly. All parts are thoroughly cleaned, old seals and bearings are replaced automatically, other parts are carefully checked for compliance with the established technical parameters. For replacement, only parts from the manufacturer's plant are used.

Preparatory work. The shaft column is checked at the company stand. In this case, the beating of the shaft is observed, and the technical condition of the worm-toothed clutch is determined.
After processing bench data, and if necessary, steering rods, anthers and steering tips, which cannot be restored, are replaced with original spare parts.

A complete replacement of the old kia rio rack and pinion mechanism with a new, original one is made after agreement with the customer.
The main reason for the unsuitability of the rails produced in 2011, 2012 is the oil seals. Together with them, O-rings made of plastic and rubber fail. Oil seals and rings are part of the kia rio repair kit.

Repair of the rail will take 5-8 hours, in difficult cases 1-2 days. The rest of the time is spent on testing the restored rail, which is carried out on a special stand.

When installing the repaired thrust on a computer stand, the wheel tilt angles are adjusted (wheel alignment).

Minimal repairs can be done with a dedicated repair kit, which includes the following parts:

Correcting the rack and pinion mechanism of the KIA Rio (auto presented in 2011) is a responsible job, entrusted to it by an experienced specialist who has all the necessary tools. Do not trust the "craftsmen" who claim that they easily repair the steering rack.

Mechanisms tend to deteriorate. Some auto parts are quietly repaired after a while, while others should be paid attention to right away. The former include plastic bumpers, glass and exterior body parts. The second includes mechanisms that are responsible for the life and safety of the driver and passengers of the car, for example, the steering system. Failure to urgently turn the car can lead to irreparable consequences.

If you find malfunctions in the steering mechanism, you should be alert and inspect.

The main cause of breakdowns is the unevenness of the roadway.
Most often, problems manifest themselves in the form of knocking and other excess noise in the area of the front suspension. On the adapted Russian version of the Kia Rio, the steering rack wears out in 5–8 months, so it is scheduled to be replaced 2 times a year. Sometimes it is enough to simply repair the rail without replacing it.

There are three stages of steering rack breakdown, and, accordingly, three types of repair.

If the part has already been repaired, then you should immediately replace it with a new one.

Suitable for those whose device has no external defects, but a knock appeared, and the steering wheel began to rotate worse. Repair consists in simple cleaning of the entire unit from accumulated dirt and moisture.
The process will not take long: just remove the rail from the machine, clean and tighten it.

The second method is used for damaged devices. You will need to buy a repair kit and clean the device case before work. The kit includes consumables for the assembly. We replace obsolete materials with new ones - and the mechanism is restored to work. How to change each material is described in the instructions.

When repairs are not possible, proceed to the third method. It involves simple replacement of the entire device. Unlike a repaired device, a new one comes with a warranty.

Replacing the steering rack is not difficult, it is more difficult to get to it and put everything back together after repair. At the end of the work, you will need to adjust the device on the car.

The car consists of many mechanisms, and they must be constantly monitored. One way or another, every node or device breaks down sooner or later, and you need to immediately notice the malfunctions and make repairs to ensure your safety.

Hello everyone! I decided to discuss the following Temko. Many of us have no no yes, the steering rack starts tapping. Trips to OD do not always bring the desired results. And someone at all (like me) scored on the "guarantee" from crooked dealers.

Therefore, we begin to discuss the independent repair of the steering rack, replacement of bushings, tightening. Anyone who has what experience in this area, it is possible and on the example of other machines with a similar rail design.

I ask you not to combine the topic with another and leave it as it is.

The clock spring is roughly a loop in the steering wheel, it is responsible for the performance of the signal, cushion and steering buttons, if the steering wheel makes more than two revolutions relative to the zero point (in either direction) the train breaks, the result is clear.

According to the subject, I repaired the rail at OD but was present during the whole process, there are no particular difficulties. You need a good lift or pit. The order is:
-Unscrew and remove the steering cardan in the cabin, fix the steering wheel in the zero position.
-lift the car, unscrew and remove the steering rods.
-Unscrew the 4 bolts of the subframe and lower the subframe (it is heavy, if there is a telescopic jack, then there is no problem, if not, then it is better to do the procedure together).
-Unscrew the high pressure hoses and drain the power steering fluid (here you just need a special cap key with a 12/14 groove)
-Unscrew the 4 bolts securing the rail to the subframe and remove the rail.

Next, we clamp the rail in a vice, tighten the right boot, unscrew the right steering rod together with the tip, unscrew the bushing and replace it. To unscrew the “thrust bearing” you need a good head for 14, if I'm not mistaken, the thread is numbered, you need to rip it off. We replace the spring and the thrust bearing itself. We tighten the new thrust bearing until it stops, then release it by 1.4 turns, then move the rail back and forth (carefully oil will spray from the holes from the hoses), the rail should move with a little effort, but not dangle and not tight. That's it, we core the heel and put it all in reverse order. Something like this.
