New flagship Nokia, the N8 smartphone, is equipped with a metal body and a non-removable battery. In ordinary life, it is unlikely that there may be a need to disassemble the gadget (except to satisfy curiosity), but if water gets into the case or the battery wants to be changed to a new one, the owner of the N8 will have only two ways: contact a service center or take a screwdriver and do everything on one's own. How exactly to disassemble this smartphone at home - read on.

So our victim is the just-released Nokia N8.

Here are the technical characteristics of the new item:

  • ARM11 processor with a clock frequency of 680 MHz
  • AMOLED touchscreen display with a resolution of 640 × 360 pixels, 3.5 ″ diagonal and multitouch technology
  • 256 MB RAM
  • 512 MB internal NAND memory and 16 GB user accessible
  • 12-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, xenon flash and 16: 9 video recording at 720p at 25 fps

- The 12-megapixel autofocus camera protrudes noticeably from the body. And as we already know from the example of other smartphones, the thickness of the camera determines the thickness of the phone. This means that if you have a powerful module, you shouldn't expect an ultra-thin case from the device.

“The lenses in the camera are said to be made up of five individually processed optical elements. This allows you to get high quality images using a rather modest size device.

- Nokia decided that the camera should protrude on the surface of the back cover. This way, the phone has something to grab onto, and it helps you get the phone out of your pocket. However, putting it back in is no longer very convenient.

The N8 not only has a standard 3.5mm headphone jack, but also mini-HDMI and micro-USB connectors.

- The smartphone has the following buttons: power on, "home", lock, camera and volume controls.

- The SIM and microSD card slots are installed next to each other on the side of the phone. Hot swappable memory card is supported.

- With the help of the front camera and applications such as Fring and Skype, the owner can make video calls not only to other phones, but also to computers.

- It is best to start disassembling your smartphone with these 4-sided screws.

- Now the panel covering the bottom of the smartphone can be removed.

- By removing the bottom panel, you can remove the small battery compartment latch.

- You can then remove the hologram battery.

“Although it requires two screws to be unscrewed, removing and replacing the battery is not that difficult.

- Nokia says that the used Li-Ion battery BL-4D 3.7 V with a capacity of 1200 mAh is non-removable. Oh well…

- The hologram on the battery should probably ensure that you received genuine Nokia products.

- After removing the protective cover, you can unscrew the 5-point screw next to the mini-HDMI port.

- Then you can remove the upper part of the housing. There are a few more screws underneath.

- The phone opens like a shell.

- Wires are still connecting the bezel to other parts of the phone, so proceed with caution.

- Fortunately, the protective glass is not firmly attached to the AMOLED display, so if it breaks, then you only have to replace it, and not the entire screen.

- On the back of the display the inscription - AMS347FF01-0.

- It also contains information about when the display was made.

- Used a Synaptics T1201A touchscreen controller. The same chip can be found in Microsoft Kin Two and RIM BlackBerry Torch.

- Comparison of the display of the N8 with the display of the fourth generation iPod touch. The difference between LCD and AMOLED is that AMOLED takes on a bluish tint when exposed to direct light.

- Several hex screws and an antenna attach the middle panel to the insides of the N8.

- The rear of the AMOLED display rests on six dedicated pads on the middle panel.

- The main antennas are located near the flat plastic plates at the top and bottom of the phone, as shown in the photos.

- By unscrewing the screws and removing the antennas, you can remove the middle panel of the N8.

- The design of the middle panel deserves special attention. The main chips of the phone are protected by a special screen. In addition, special thermal panels are placed on the inside, which are supposed to remove heat from the chips.

- With the increase in the speed of processors and the expansion of the functionality of devices, temperature control becomes more and more important, because overheating can damage the phone.

- By removing the middle panel, the motherboard can be easily removed.

- It is worth noting the design of the daughterboard, which is located at the top of the motherboard. It is connected to the main one using a ribbon cable, which is sandwiched between the layers of the motherboard.

- In most devices, ribbon cables are connected using special connectors or plugged into connectors, rather than being pinched by layers of the board.

The motherboard of Nokia N8 consists of chips:

  • Toshiba THGBM1G7D4FBA13 K23538 (16GB internal storage)
  • Samsung K5W4G2GACA - AL54 (CPU + DDR RAM + NAND ROM)
  • Broadcom BCM2727 GPU with Dedicated 3D Graphics
  • 4380044 9920Q VJ (RF Transceiver) from STMicroelectronics
  • EPCOS D1053
  • RENESAS 09801A
  • 4376057 GAZ0035G (Baseband) from Texas Instruments

- By removing the motherboard panel, you can also remove the flash.

- Unlike most smartphones that use a single or dual LED flash, the N8 has a built-in xenon flash - similar to those found in most cameras.

- Large capacitor allows high voltage to be stored to make the flash brighter.

- The loudspeaker must be removed from the adhesive on the back.

- The speaker system is mainly used for conversations, as well as for playing melodies stored in the phone's memory.

- Nokia N8 Suitability for Repair: 8 out of 10 (10 is the easiest to repair).

“Although Nokia counted on the user not being able to change the battery, it’s quite easy to do.

- AMOLED display easily separates from glass. This means that you can replace the display or glass independently of each other.

- The parts of the phone are mostly mechanically connected to each other, there is very little glue.

- To remove the front glass, you will have to use a heat gun. However, when heated, metal does not deform as easily as plastic.

- None of the cameras can be removed from the phone.

We disassemble the Nokia N8 phone to replace the display or housing.
