The complete set of the BMW E39 car includes a system that unlocks the wheels during emergency braking. This system is included in most new vehicles. The main function of ABS is that in a critical situation it prevents the wheels from completely blocking during hard braking. This system also helps to better control the machine during hard braking. This mainly happens when entering a bend and also on an ice-covered road. The ABS system includes:
  • Control block.
  • System breakdown lamp. It is located in the passenger compartment on the dashboard.
  • Special sensors located on BMW wheels.

An electronic device, which is located in the control device, performs the function of monitoring the appearance of problems in the system itself. In the event of a breakdown, a light comes on on the information panel, and the system itself ceases to function. Driving a car in such a situation is allowed, but with a sharp braking, the car will weigh itself differently. Almost any BMW E39 driver can diagnose and fix problems in the system.

After the vehicle has been factory tested, the ABC system begins. In this case, the lamp in the passenger compartment on the torpedo lights up for 3 seconds. After the elapsed time, the light goes out. If the indicator has not gone out, you should do the following:
  1. If the car was moving, it should be stopped and the engine turned off. It should take 3 minutes. Then start the car again.
  2. The voltage in the battery should be checked - 10.5 W.
  3. It is necessary to check the terminals and power wires.
  4. View all wires that go to the wheel sensors.

If the light bulb continues to work, you should contact a BMW service professional for diagnostics. With the help of a special electronic device, information is read from the unit and the point of the problem is determined.

To understand that there is a problem with the E39 ABS unit, you can notice a different behavior of the car:

  1. No communication with sensors on wheels.
  2. Installing new sensors does not solve this problem.
  3. The order of destruction of the block by sensors: left - behind; right - in front; front - left; the back is on the right.
  4. The speedometer stops working.
  5. Indicators on the instrument panel in the passenger compartment are illuminated to indicate a problem.
  6. After warming up the BMW vehicle, the system is automatically deactivated.
  7. ABC turns off when driving on uneven road surfaces.

An independent check must begin with the cycle number sensors. The device is bolted to the hub. Therefore, remove the brake disc assembly and other parts. The bolts can be unscrewed with a special hex key, counterclockwise. For better removal, sprinkle the bolts with WD-40 (a special tool - wedge).

After removing the sensor, disconnect the connector located on the upper wing. You should also check the wires for integrity. If a wire is found to be damaged, it must be replaced with a new one; twisting and insulation are not suitable in this case. The wire needs the same length and the same cross-section. Sensor resistance 0.9-1.3 kOhm.

In the BMW E39 until 1999, there were no problems with the anti-lock braking system. But newer car releases have such a weak spot. This is due to an unsuccessful fixation of the control unit. It is located near the power unit. To restore the hydroelectronic unit after 1999, a rosin and tin soldering iron will be required.

The weak point of the control unit is the conductors that connect the connector to the device board. Contact is lost precisely at this point. This is due to constant vibration as well as sudden changes in temperature.

  1. Remove the cover from the unit using a large knife or a hacksaw.
  2. Carefully remove the protection layer from the edge of the board. You do not need to remove the entire layer. Need access to guides. They are made of aluminum and run from the board to the connector. Use a regular needle to check the contact. The needle should be lightly pricked into the guide wire.
  3. With tweezers or tweezers, the conductor is removed without contact. And a new one is put in its place using soldering. The best conductor is copper wire. The same cross-section and alloy wire from the mobile phone charger.
  4. There are 16 wires connected to the connector itself. They all need to be checked. If there is no conductivity, the wire changes in the same way.
  5. Before installing the cover in its place, you should use a sealant. The block returns to its place in the car. High pressure pipes and sensor contacts are connected to it.

If the ABS unit has already been repaired, then it cannot be repaired again. Purchase a new one from a specialist store. Do not drip this block on the workbenches. Most often it has defects.

It is permitted to operate a BMW with a broken ABS system, but this is the safety of the driver, passengers and others.

BMW X5 is the most popular modification of the car in the model range of the concern. The brand is distinguished by high indicators of reliability, excellent operational and technical characteristics. An important role in maintaining reliability is played by the anti-lock braking system ABS, which ensures comfortable and safe braking on BMW cars. Specialists of the service station "Tekhcentrik" note that breakdowns of the ABS are quite rare. If necessary, it can be diagnosed, restored or replaced by qualified employees of our service.

Repair of the ABS unit on BMW X5 E53 is necessary in the following cases:

  • frequent flashing of the system indicator on the car panel;
  • the ABS light is on constantly;
  • the indicator of violations in the functioning of the pressure sensor lights up;
  • with high-quality brakes, the braking distance is increased.

To solve the problems described, it is necessary to have special equipment that allows complex computer diagnostics of the car. Specialists of the service station "Techcentric" in the process of analysis identify the reasons for the refusal. Depending on the complexity of the breakdown, the price of the repair is formed. In many cases, it is sufficient to replace the sensors of the device or restore their functionality.

For a quality repair, it is necessary to identify the cause of the problem. Among the main failures are:

  • malfunctions of the front wheel sensor on the right;
  • malfunctioning of the sensor of the front wheel on the left;
  • breakage of the rear wheel sensor on the right or left;
  • lack of information from control devices;
  • breakdown of the booster pump;
  • internal dusting of sensors;
  • short circuit in the system wiring.

Certain skills are required to carry out recovery work with ABS. An experienced foreman can often carry out repairs within an hour. In most cases, this does not require removing the unit itself, located under the hood of the car on the right - you just need to unscrew the fastening screws from the hydromodulator. When such a procedure is carried out by a non-specialist, there is a risk of damage to the device, which will require an expensive part replacement and comprehensive vehicle maintenance. Do not ignore the signs of malfunctions in the anti-lock braking system so that you do not have to completely change it.

BMW X5 E53 Why ABS does not work To diagnose ABS, you need to connect a scanner to the BMW X5 E53. The dealer software Rheingold interrogates the ABS control unit, and reads out the error codes. In 90% percent of cases, the culprit for the failure of the ABS will be found. What breaks in ABS? Firstly, fuses can "fly out", and secondly, wheel speed sensors often fail. Less often, the control unit "burns out". Well, the steering position sensor is designed for the entire life of the car. Computer diagnostics revealed a malfunction of the rudder position sensor. It is located on the steering shaft under the dashboard. You can buy a steering wheel position sensor in the spare parts department of the specialized car service "Pobeda". Replacing the rudder position sensor will take about two hours, after which the rudder must be calibrated and the errors erased. After which ABS will work normally. The work has been agreed with the owner of the BMW X5 E53, and will be completed in the near future.

There was a nuisance, the car went into automatic transmission emergency mode (3rd gear), the speedometer did not work, did not show fuel consumption, occasionally the engine temperature went off scale and check caught fire. OBD2 errors: P0500 P0600 P0700.

Error decoding: P0500 Vehicle speed sensor - electrical circuit malfunction

Wiring, vehicle speed sensor, ECM

P0600 CAN data bus - malfunction Wiring, interconnected systems, ECM

P0700 Transmission control, malfunction request (MIL) - circuit malfunction Wiring, ECM / PCM / TCM

It felt like an automatic transmission and the need to repair an automatic transmission. It was very difficult to find a solution, on the Internet I came across one interesting article that had nothing to do with my OBD errors, but indirectly approached. It was necessary to diagnose the ABS unit.

The article described frequent breakdowns of ABS units:

1. The contacts of the ABS2 sensors are unsoldered. The mass is soldered off from the board. As a result, an error appears on the CAN bus, the unit is cut off and the automatic transmission goes into emergency mode. (like mine)

It was not difficult to remove the block, we unscrew the headlight and access to the ABS block opens. A thin screwdriver is required to release the chip attachment, which is retracted to the side. Next, the unit is fixed with 6 bolts, unscrew them with a screwdriver with an extension cord and carefully remove the electrical unit.

Now we take a hacksaw and very carefully saw off the plastic cover of the block, I'll repeat it carefully! Since under the lid there is a microcircuit filled with gel, to which everything sticks. We opened the block and we see that there is no visual damage. Coming back to my mistake on the falling off mass of the ABS unit. The mass is provided by three thin wires on the right side of the contact group, when they were pushed off with a needle, they were torn off. We safely bite them off, drill a small hole in the board for a self-tapping screw, since it will not work to solder onto an aluminum surface. We twist the self-tapping screw, solder the wire to it and the second end to the contact group. which we bit off, thereby providing a minus on the board.

Next, a sealant, a little time to dry, install and test drive!

The error went away, a solution to the problem was found. Perhaps this article will help not only me in solving the problem with the automatic transmission in emergency mode with a bunch of errors, when the ABS unit is to blame.

We carefully cut this cover

These contacts are unsoldered in case of a problem with ABS sensors

And this is how we got a new mass on the block.

All BMW X5 vehicles are equipped with DSC 111 with ABS. At the same time, depending on the year of manufacture, the machines are equipped with BOSCH ABS units, namely BOSCH 5.7 (up to October 2003 inclusive) and BOSCH 8.1 (from November of the same year). ABS are distinguished by their high performance and repair of the BMW X5 e53 ABS is extremely rare. However, if certain symptoms occur, it is necessary to diagnose the block.

We list these symptoms (the same for all BOSCH models):

1. The ABS malfunction lamp comes on periodically.

2. The ABS malfunction lamp lights up constantly (in this case, the unit often does not communicate during the diagnostics process). 3. The error on the pressure sensor is on. 4. Failure of the ABS system (there is an increase in the braking distance, while the brakes are working properly).

In all these cases, it is required to carry out computer diagnostics to identify the reasons for the failure of the unit. The cost of repairing an ABS BMW X5 e53 directly depends on the complexity of the work and the price of replacement parts. In most cases, repair work is limited to replacing sensors; they have a limited service life. Moreover, the sensors are not protected from dirt and low temperatures. In the conditions of the domestic climate, they can fail after 100 thousand km. mileage. The block itself rarely breaks, however, problems in it are not excluded.

Computer diagnostics is a mandatory procedure before repair. A burning light on the panel may indicate the following:

• The collapse is not exposed. If the angle exceeds 5 degrees, the system does not understand the trajectory of the car and may generate an error indicating that the ABS is not working properly, although the problem is not at all in the block.

• Problems in the wiring. Broken wires and frequent errors at subzero temperatures may indicate a wiring malfunction, and give an ABS error • A crumbling wire in the ABS or a dirty sensor. In this case, you will need either cleaning or repairs, and in some cases, a complete replacement of the unit.

If a malfunction is identified in the unit, first of all, it is necessary to correctly remove the part. Self-repair can lead to negative consequences. If it is incorrect to dismantle the ABS unit, as a result of mechanical breakage of the solenoids, the entire spare part will become faulty.

We have the necessary equipment for repairing ABS BMW X5 e53, and our specialists have extensive experience in the repair of this system. We are ready to solve repair problems of any degree of complexity in the shortest possible time.

The braking system of the car is the main one, responsible for the safety of all road users. One of its components is ABS - anti-lock braking system. It first appeared in 1979 in a Mercedes S-Class. The device was originally offered in additional configurations and only since 1992 began to appear on expensive brands in the basic configuration. Almost at the same time, ABS was launched into serial production of Mercedes and BMW of the seventh series.

The first devices were extremely bulky and weighed about seven kilograms. The modern system is seven times lighter and more compact, the device's response speed has increased. ABS is installed on almost all cars of the current generation. A special commission at the UN is preparing a document prohibiting the production of cars without this design.

How does it help ABS driver Bmw X5?

In the event of an emergency, in a slippery or wet surface, when the brake pedal is pressed sharply, the wheels are locked, the driver is deprived of the opportunity to somehow change the movement of the car. The anti-lock braking system creates an intermittent braking effect and retains the ability to control the machine.This device is installed on all BMW X5 E53 and helps the driver to significantly reduce the danger in the event of an emergency. ABS also has a reliable assistant in the form of another electronic system, EBV, which distributes the forces directed to the wheels when braking.

The ABS system is part of another DSC 111 (Vehicle Stability System), supplied by Bosch, the first developer of ABS. The Bosch 5.7 design was installed on BMW X5 E53 cars produced before October 2003. Further, a modernized system with an index of 8.1 was used.

Any ABS includes control sensors installed on the inside of the hub, an electronic control unit (ECU) and a valve body that acts as an actuator.

Malfunction symptoms ABS on the Bmw X5 E53

It must be admitted that ABS from Bosch is a reliable design, but its service life can be significantly reduced by aggressive driving style, poor road conditions, harsh climatic factors, that is, what Russia has always been rich in. It is not recommended to continue driving with a faulty ABS device, even with reliable brakes. This is fraught with the formation of the following emergency provisions:

  • Wheel blocking with subsequent unpredictable consequences.
  • Possible rollover of the car, this option is more likely when installing different tires on the wheels.
  • An increase in the braking distance, which is fraught with collisions with pedestrians, the creation of an accident.

Therefore, if one of the signs of a malfunction of the anti-lock braking system is detected, you should immediately contact a car service. Symptoms may be as follows.

  • The on-board computer shows a defect in the system, and the sensor can be constantly on or blinking periodically.
  • The pressure sensor malfunction lamp comes on.
  • Changing the braking distance upward.

Computer diagnostics helps in most cases to correctly identify the defective element and the subsequent repair of the BMW X5. The causes of malfunctions can be

- dirty state of the sensor,

Advantages and disadvantages of the system

The main advantage of ABS is that the device significantly increases the safety of the driver and passengers while driving, allows both an experienced driver and a beginner to brake confidently on any part of the road, while making the necessary maneuvers.

The disadvantages of this system are small, but they should be treated carefully. ABS is primarily a "dumb" mechanism, sometimes triggered by the following factors:

  • Uneven or uneven road surface.
  • It ceases to act when the car "jumps" on an uneven surface.
  • It does not work immediately, it needs moments to process information from the sensors and vice versa, it is impossible to predict the moment of a complete stop.

These are all "little things". Human safety remains paramount, which is well taken care of by the anti-lock braking system.

Today under the heading "BMW Repair" we will try to fix a broken door handle on a BMW X5.Let's say right away - repairs can be both cheap and expensive, from an authorized dealer (6,000 rubles). We are not looking for easy ways and will try to solve the problem with our own hands, all the same, Xs quite often have problems with door mechanisms.

Moreover, it is not specifically the handle that breaks, but the silumin part (magnesium frame) inside it:

  • Temperature. The handle, especially after washing, is warm. And it's winter outside, -20˚C - the mechanism just freezes. It doesn't take a lot of force to break the frame inside of it. Usually, everything happens like this: on a cold winter day, you go out into the yard to your X5, as usual you pull the handle and something suspiciously clicks. Moreover, the door opens normally from the passenger compartment, but not from the outside.
    Moisture gets into the mechanism itself, the parts freeze and are chained together, and then with a sharp movement you open the handle and everything inside is torn.
  • Wear. This is due to the wrong trajectory of movement of the outer handle during its opening. We kind of move it towards ourselves, and it must go up, because of this, the loop wears out and then it breaks.

If you go to the salon, then at least 6,000 rubles will be taken from you. We have collected the most popular repair methods:

  1. Remove the trim. Strongly. Press on yourself, nothing will break.
  2. Open the window completely.
  3. Take out the ignition key.
  4. Remove the pillow.
  5. Pull out the plug completely (in the direction of the cylinder), not the small one.
  6. Fold back the corner of the soundproofing.
  7. Remove the lock cover from the end of the door.
  8. Through it, unscrew the keyhole bolt, remove the keyhole by moving against the direction of the car.
  9. Next, loosen the bolt on the outer handle and take out the handle from under it, and on the other side, take it out of the mount. At the same time, squeeze the frame mechanism (silumin) towards yourself. The outer handle should be open, so it is easier to remove it from the grooves.
  10. Unscrew the bolt on the outside of the door under the rubber band of the handle. Then, from the inside, disconnect the frame cable (silumin). I also need to remove the lock cable, but I do not know where to find it there.
  11. Unscrew this silumin frame.
  12. Take it out and put in a new one, lubricated with silicone or pumped with a slice of 1 mm iron in the form of a ring.

Spare caps will definitely come in handy, we recommend purchasing a couple of pieces.

For non-illuminated knobs: Look for the LED on the wiring harness when the dimensions are on. All the same, you will disassemble everything.

You buy a magnesium frame yourself (2,000 rubles from an authorized dealer), remove the trim and have it serviced. They will take money only for work, which is about 1,000 rubles. Such repairs will cost us 3,000 rubles, which is half the price.

Before giving the frame to the service, fill it with silicone so that it does not break next time:

A piece of iron 1 millimeter thick, rolled up like a ring and welded at the junction. The work is difficult, but the result will last for a long time. And if it freezes, then something may come off in another place. We don't know which one, but time will tell:

The first X5 was presented in 1999. In the same year, sales began in the United States. A year later, the BMW X5 was sold in Europe. In 2003, the design of the front end and the engine line were updated. At the end of 2006, the E53 was replaced by a new generation of BMW - X5 E70. The BMW X5 was assembled in the USA, Spartanburg, South Carolina for all automotive markets.

Initially, the E53 was offered with two gasoline engines: an inline 3-liter "six" M54, with a capacity of 231 hp. and V-shaped "eight" M62 with a working volume of 4.4 liters with a return of 286 hp. In 2001, the line of engines was replenished with a 3-liter 6-cylinder M57 / 184 hp diesel engine. and an 8-cylinder V-shaped petrol engine of 4.6 l / 347 hp.After restyling in 2003, the following were replaced: a 3-liter diesel engine with a more powerful 218 hp, and a 4.4-liter gasoline engine with an N62 / 320 hp. The 4.6is was replaced by the 4.8is, which develops 360 hp.

The most widely used gasoline 3-liter aspirated. This motor is considered to be very reliable and unpretentious. Its resource before the first possible problems is more than 250-300 thousand km. Gasoline engines with a working volume of 4.4 liters and above often sin by turning the liners and the appearance of scoring on the cylinder walls with a mileage of more than 200-250 thousand km. On engines with a capacity of 3.0 liters, such problems are rare, but sometimes they occur. Overhaul of a faulty engine will require about 100-150 thousand rubles. But you can find a "used" motor for 80-120 thousand rubles. The work on replacing a faulty unit is estimated by services at 20-30 thousand rubles. Some technicians can seal the damaged cylinder, which significantly reduces repair costs.

All gasoline units have a number of common problems. One of them is the crankcase ventilation valve. Over time, the channels for removing the crankcase gases become clogged, and the accumulating condensate freezes in the winter, which leads to the closure of the channel and squeezing out the oil through the dipstick. Failure to detect a malfunction can lead to engine oil starvation. Later, the tubes of the channels received a heat-insulating coating, but this revision did not completely eliminate the problem. Dealers sell a new valve for 6-8 thousand rubles, analogues are cheaper - about 4-5 thousand rubles. The way out is the regular replacement of the valve with tubes.

The category of consumables includes the coolant reservoir cap. A valve built into the lid is responsible for maintaining the operating pressure in the cooling system. The valve does not last forever. Its jamming in the summer heat can cause the expansion tank to burst. Lack of fluid in the system leads to overheating of the motor. When replacing an already damaged expansion tank, it will not be superfluous to replace the automatic transmission thermostat, the plastic case of which begins to crumble with high mileage. The cost of a new thermostat is about 2,000 rubles.

After 200-250 thousand km, VANOS, the variable valve timing system, begins to make a noticeable noise. When starting a cold engine, a roar is heard, and the engine, after starting, diesel, and vibration appears.

Hydraulic lifters serve more than 250-300 thousand km. To replace them on an 8-cylinder engine will require about 20,000 rubles. At about the same time, it is necessary to replace the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors, mass air flow, pump and thermostat.

Oil consumption begins to increase after 150-200 thousand kilometers. One of the reasons is the valve stem seals. The costs of purchasing new ones and work on their replacement will amount to about 15-20 thousand rubles. More often, services raise the price up to 50-70 thousand rubles.

The catalytic converter of the exhaust gases ends after 150-200 thousand km. The exhaust of 3-liter BMW X5 engines from the USA is equipped with an additional catalyst purge system, the motor of which can fail when the vehicle is driven over 100-150 thousand km. If it fails, it is cheaper to throw out the "giblets" of the purge system and reflash the ECU under the Euro-2 toxicity standards.

On a BMW X5 with a mileage of more than 200-300 thousand km, it may be necessary to replace the fuel pump. The cost of the original is about 10 thousand rubles, the analog is cheaper - 5 thousand rubles. On vehicles with a diesel engine, the main pump may also fail.

Over time, the engine oil seals and gaskets of the engine crankcase and valve covers begin to "snot". The cost of the original rear crankshaft oil seal is about 1-1.5 thousand rubles, the analogue is 400-500 rubles, the cost of replacement work is estimated by dealers at 9-10 thousand rubles, non-specialized services - at 4-5 thousand rubles.

Turbodiesel 3.0 liters in terms of reliability is one step lower than gasoline 3.0 liters, but higher than more powerful engines of 4.4 and 4.6 liters. A diesel turbine can live up to 150-200 thousand km. Repair of the turbocharger will require about 15-20 thousand rubles.The turbocharger is controlled by a pressure converter. Its resource is about 150-200 thousand km. Interruptions in engine operation can be caused by a failure of the boost pressure sensor or loss of tightness in the pipes leading to the intercooler.

Transmission

BMW X5 with 3-liter petrol and diesel engines could be equipped with a manual transmission. Such cars are very rare, and manual transmissions are generally without serious problems.

The X5 of the first generation was equipped with automatic gearboxes from GM (paired with 3-liter engines) and ZF (with engines of 4.4 liters and above). They live up to 250-300 thousand km. On versions of BMW with a 4.8 liter engine, due to its high tractive power characteristics, the resource of the box is significantly less. The first complaints are jolts when switching, more often when switching from 1st to 2nd and from 3rd to 4th. It is possible to "cure" the box in 9 out of 10 cases after replacing the set of solenoids and oil in the box. The cost of solenoids is about 15-20 thousand rubles. If, after replacing the solenoids, the kicks remain when switching from 3rd to 4th, it means that the clutches of the 3rd and 4th gears have worn out. They tend to be the most prone to wear and tear.

With a mileage of more than 250-300 thousand km, it may be necessary to replace the torque converter. The cost of a new "donut" is about 25-30 thousand rubles, its bulkhead and repair is cheaper - about 5-8 thousand rubles. On a GM box, the oil pump may die. It will not be possible to replace them with new ones - they are not released, but you can pick up used ones. Often, the hoses connecting the box to the radiator begin to leak.

After 200-250 thousand km, the first problems with the transfer case appear. As a rule, this is a stretched chain that begins to crack. It is not worth pulling with replacement, otherwise the splines of the propeller shaft will begin to wear out. The original chain costs about 15,000 rubles, the analog is available for 7-8 thousand rubles. The work on replacing the chain will require about 5,000 rubles. If, after stopping the engine, after 2-3 seconds, clicks begin to be heard under the bottom of the car, it means that the time has come for the transfer case servo. A new distribution box will cost 35-45 thousand rubles.

The front gearbox fails more often on the diesel X5. The reducer is not repairable, a used one will cost 15-25 thousand rubles.

Over time, backlashes appear in the cardan shafts. A sign of backlash is jerking when switching gearbox modes from "D" to "P". Replacing one crosspiece with work will require about 5,000 rubles. The front propeller shaft costs about 15-19 thousand rubles, about 2-3 thousand rubles will be asked for work on its replacement.

Front drives often fail. A set of new drives will cost 20-25 thousand rubles. An external CV joint assembly will require about 8-10 thousand rubles. The original anthers of the external CV joint cost about 2,000 rubles, analogs - about 400-500 rubles. Front wheel bearings run more than 150-200 thousand km.

BMW E53 was equipped with a conventional or air suspension. The latter could be complete or only on the rear axle. The resource of the air bags is about 150-200 thousand km. The main reason for the failure of the pillows is wear as a result of the ingress of road dirt. Thorough cleaning of pneumatic elements significantly prolongs their life. Front air suspension struts change only as an assembly. The cost of the racks is about 25-30 thousand rubles. Rear airbags are changed separately from the struts. The cost of the pillow is about 8 thousand rubles. The weak points of the air suspension are the receiver valve block costing about 12 thousand rubles, body position sensors, which often fail (more often in winter) - 3-4 thousand rubles. Less often the suspension control unit fails - 25-30 thousand rubles. Conventional shock absorbers cost 6-10 thousand rubles.

The suspension arms travel more than 100-150 thousand km. After replacement, their resource rarely exceeds 50-100 thousand km. The rear wheels become a "house" due to wear of the transverse upper arms, floating hinges or silent blocks of the lower H-shaped arms. A complete bulkhead of the BMW X5 suspension will require about 40 thousand rubles.

Steering rack play is not common. Rubber squeaks may occur when the steering wheel is turned.The source of the sound is the steering shaft gimbals; after being treated with silicone grease, the creak goes away. Over time, the cardan of the lower section of the steering shaft begins to knock. The steering shaft assembly costs about 19-20 thousand rubles.

ABS sensors can fail when they have driven more than 250-300 thousand km. The cost of one sensor is about 4-6 thousand rubles. The ABS unit rarely fails, its replacement will require about 30,000 rubles. With a mileage of more than 200-250 thousand km, the front brake hoses often break.

Body and interior

The X5 body iron is strong and corrosion resistant. Thick and strong paintwork withstands aggressive environmental influences. On older cars, chips appear on the hood and front bumper, and the radiator grille also suffers. On cars over 10 years old, the glazing of the headlights becomes quite cloudy, and the first traces of corrosion may appear on the bottom of the side doors under the seal.

On the older BMW X5, the side mirror drive fails. The cost of restoration is about 1.5 thousand rubles. In cold weather, the outer door handle often breaks when trying to open a door with a "grabbed" lock (more often after washing). The reason is the destruction of the fragile frame of the handle made of silumin. The original frame costs about 3-5 thousand rubles, the analog - about 1.5 thousand rubles. As a preventive measure, we recommend seasonal treatment of the lock mechanism with a silicone-based compound.

Panoramic sunroofs often stop functioning. The reason is the skew and breakage of the rear sash. In addition, due to wear on the guide of the panoramic sunroof, it begins to knock. And because of the clogged drainage of the hatch, water can enter the cabin. Soon there are problems with the glass lifting mechanism. This is due to the guides, cable and drive motor.

Over time, the contacts on the tailgate strip rot away, which is why the number illumination and the trunk open button stop working. A new plank assembly costs about 6-7 thousand rubles. But contacts can be easily soldered - the cost of work is no more than 1,000 rubles. Due to the oxidation of the contacts on the rear lamp board, problems with the lights appear. The solution is soldering or replacement.

The BMW X5 salon is very pleasing with its good quality and the absence of squeaks. But there are also negative aspects. For example, the fabric upholstery of the front pillars begins to peel off. Some people paste over the racks again or change them for new ones - about 2 thousand rubles per rack.

The absence of pixels on the dashboard display is treated by soldering the loop. An audio system malfunction is usually caused by a failure of the radio module or amplifier located in the trunk. New modules cost about 10-12 thousand rubles each, for the repair of the electrical unit they will ask for about 3-5 thousand rubles.

There are problems with the air conditioning fan (under the hood). A new fan costs about 12-15 thousand rubles. The high cost and the possibility of failure are due to the electrical control board integrated into the housing. The crackle from the climate unit on the central panel is emitted by the processor cooler on the board. You can silence the cooler by treating it with grease. The floating revolutions of the heater fan signal the need to replace the "hedgehog" - the switch of the heating system fan cascade. In addition, a faulty "hedgehog" in 2-3 days can discharge the battery.

The charge level of the battery is an important element in the operation of the BMW X5. A drop in the on-board voltage at the time of starting the engine often leads to glitches of various systems with the issuance of error information on the display.

The lack of charge current from the generator is most often caused by wear of the graphite brushes and bearings. Replacing the brushes will require about 1,000 rubles. A complete overhaul of the generator with replacement of bearings will cost 5 thousand rubles. A new generator costs about 10-12 thousand rubles.

Sometimes the LCM is buggy - the light and lamp control unit, the parking sensors (2-2.5 thousand rubles apiece), the DME unit (gives errors on the engine sensors) and the rain sensor.

The BMW X5 E53 series is not so difficult to operate.With a certain skill, knowledge and skills, it can be serviced independently, which will minimize operating costs. There is more than enough information on identifying and replacing faulty units on the Internet. There are many and quite high-quality substitutes for original spare parts. E53 has been studied far and wide, and therefore "discovering new planets" during repairs will not have to. Visiting official dealers will inevitably require large financial costs. And ordinary services, seeing a "dream car", often significantly increase the price of work. All this gives rise to the myth of the unusually expensive service of the Bavarian handsome. But you shouldn't buy a car with your last money. It is not easy to 100% determine the wear of a given specimen without a complete diagnosis. And in most cases, the BMW X5 was purchased with the last money, did not receive proper care and "annealed" to the fullest. Therefore, according to the experience of the owners of the first generation BMW X5, 100-150 thousand rubles in reserve will not even be superfluous for the first year or two of operation. After a series of small investments, BMW usually does not fail.
