In detail: do-it-yourself Volkswagen Golf 3 car repair from a real master for the site my.housecope.com.
The debut of the third generation Golf took place in August 1991. The novelty, strikingly different from its predecessors, had a unique design and a much more spacious interior. And what is especially remarkable, Volkswagen is increasing the engine displacement. The range includes seven gasoline (60-190 hp), including 16-valve and two "narrow" V-shaped sixes with a camber angle of only 15 degrees, as well as 3 diesel - two atmospheric (64 and 75 hp). ) and one turbocharged (90 hp). All gasoline engines were equipped with converters. The most "modest" engine had a volume of 1.4 liters, and the most powerful - 2.8 liters (with such a car it developed a speed of 225 km / h, and "hundred" gained from a standstill in 7.6 seconds). The most powerful versions received a four-speed automatic transmission with an electrohydraulic drive, equipped with two programs - for economical and sporty driving styles, as well as disc brakes on all wheels (front - ventilated). All cars were equipped with power steering and brakes.
The developers paid special attention to safety - there were easily crushed volumes on impact, a reinforced frame, amplifiers built into the doors. The Golf III also featured airbags for the driver and front passenger, a 170mm deformable steering column, a foam-covered instrument cluster and steel rear seat backs. Plus, the developers of the Golf III gave their customers a 12-year corrosion protection guarantee.
Among the additional equipment of the car, one can distinguish the ABC system, electric seat heating, air conditioning, electric adjustment of the angle of inclination of the backs of the seats, centralized control of locks, electric adjustment of the position of outside mirrors, a system for preheating the engine in cold weather and much more.
Body choices included hatchbacks, a convertible and a sedan with the new name Vento. The Golf Variant was presented for the first time. The body, which was 320 mm longer than that of the sedan, and the volume of the luggage compartment with the rear seats folded down was 1425 liters.
The model of the new convertible was slightly modified, had a heated rear window and was very popular in the United States.
Golf III sold 4.8 mil. copies and production ceased in 1997. Golf in the third generation has become more prestigious not only externally, but also in terms of classification. This is a car that was distinguished by its reliability, comfort and versatility.

Unlike its predecessor, the third generation Golf had significantly more modifications to the traditional 3- and 5-door hatchbacks and 4-door sedan (Vento), a 5-door Variant station wagon and an open convertible were added. This expansion of the family, first of all, was caused by the fact that the main competitor - Opel Astra - already had similar modifications.
VW Golf fans have always appreciated its practicality and functionality. So, if necessary, a rather bulky luggage can be transported in the car, which is facilitated by the transformable rear seats. By folding them, you can significantly increase the volume of the luggage compartment. For example, a hatchback in the “stowed” state, it is 330 liters, and with the seats folded it increases to 1162 liters! Although, of course, for frequent transportation of goods, the Variant station wagon is the best fit - with the rear seats folded, the volume of its trunk reaches 1425 liters! By the way, the hatchbacks had an annoying Golf-II flaw, which its owners often complained about, - a large loading height of the trunk. At the "troika" the fifth door reaches the upper edge of the rear bumper.
The bodies of the family are quite strong and hardy, moreover, the "Wolfsburgs" even gave a 3-year warranty for paintwork and a 6-year warranty against perforating corrosion.
Modifications for every taste The interior of the Golf / Vento still looks almost modern today, and the quality materials stand the test of time. In addition, seven modifications (CL, GL, GT / GTD, GTI / GTI 16V and "stuffed" VR6, differing from each other in engines and the availability of certain options) make it easy to choose the trim option to your liking.
The inside of the car is quite spacious - the “gallery” can comfortably accommodate three passengers. At the same time, there is enough legroom and the knees do not rest on the backs of the front seats. To be fair, it should be noted that 3-door modifications are less comfortable when landing in the rear seats.
Traditionally for VW cars of the 90s, the instrument panel in inexpensive modifications is equipped with a large analogue clock instead of a tachometer. The designers decided not to save on the odometer - all versions have an electronic mileage counter. Although when buying, you should not flatter yourself and completely trust the readings of the device - domestic craftsmen have learned to “twist” it too.
Of the shortcomings, it is worth noting the not very good visibility in 3- and 5-door hatchbacks, limited by a massive C-pillar.
"Charged" motors can be "killed" The Golf / Vento powertrain range is wide and consists of 11 engines: nine petrol engines ranging from 60 to 190 hp. and two diesel engines - 63 and 90 hp. All of them are quite reliable, with timely maintenance and the use of high-quality oils, they can withstand a mileage of 350-400 thousand km before replacing the rings.
By the way, for the first time in the history of the model, the creators supplemented the line of 4-cylinder engines with two 6-cylinder VR6 - 2.8 liters (174 hp) and 2.9 liters (190 hp), thus turning a small city car into formidable conqueror of space and time. For example, a 174-horsepower engine accelerates an almost monochromatic car to the first “hundred” in just 7.6 seconds! Although at the same time it is extremely "gluttonous" - in the urban cycle it spends about 13 liters of expensive 98th gasoline per 100 kilometers. For those who prefer an active driving style, but do not want to spend too much money on gasoline, we can recommend a fairly dynamic version of the GTI 16V with a capacity of 150 hp. - it also accelerates to 100 km / h quite quickly - in 8.3 seconds, but it consumes about 10 liters of gasoline, and not 98, but 95. Often, however, the engines, transmission and chassis of most Golf sports modifications - GTI, GTI 16V and VR6, are in a state of wear and tear, as these cars are usually acquired by fans of fast driving. Therefore, before buying a favorite copy, it is worth carrying out its qualified diagnostics at a branded service station.
If you like diesel, experts recommend opting for an atmospheric version of 1.9 liters (63 hp). It is not as fast as the turbocharged one, but it is simple and unpretentious in operation. Due to high loads, the turbocharged version has a lower engine life than the atmospheric one. In addition, you should be aware that on average a turbine (and Golf is no exception here) serves about 200 thousand km, and this is subject to timely replacement of the air filter. And whether the previous owner did it, only he himself knows. In addition, this engine sometimes has oil leaks through the front and rear crankshaft seals.
The gas distribution mechanism of all 4-cylinder engines is driven by a toothed belt, which on petrol engines must be changed together with a tension roller every 90 thousand km, on diesel engines - 70 thousand km. But on the VR6, instead of a belt, a timing chain is installed, which, as a rule, nurses the entire life of the engine. The cylinder head of all units is equipped with hydraulic compensators for the thermal clearances of the valves, which, with a timely oil change, on average, serve about 200 thousand km. The characteristic metallic knock when the motor is running indicates that the compensators are ordered to live a long time.
The Golf-III was the first in the car range to no longer use carburetors on the gasoline version. Fuel is supplied by distributed and single injection systems. The latter, by the way, often suffers from the failure of the idle speed controller, while the gasket between the intake manifold and the mono-injector often burns out in the system.
The weak point of the cooling system is the plastic flanges located at the junction of the rubber pipes with the engine, they sometimes crack. And due to the drying out of the O-rings, coolant often leaks from under the flanges. "Treatment" of the disease involves the replacement of defective parts.
Be careful with the "mechanics" Most Golf-IIIs in service are equipped with 5-speed manual transmissions. 4-speed “automatic machines” are much less common. With normal operation and timely oil and filter changes, they are quite reliable. But on cars with high mileage, equipped with "mechanics", problems may arise. So, in the checkpoint, the bearings of the primary and secondary shafts sometimes fail, as evidenced by the increased noise of the gearbox. The rocker bushings also wear out, causing difficult gear shifting.
The clutch has a mechanical drive, in which the cable self-feed mechanism sometimes fails, as a result of which it becomes impossible to disengage the clutch. On average, with a calm driving style, the disc and basket are able to withstand a mileage of 150-200 thousand km.
The all-wheel drive versions of Syncro, equipped with a viscous coupling, redistributing torque in the event of slipping of the front wheels to the rear ones, are quite reliable, but they are very rare on the “second hand” market. However, they cost an average of $ 500-800 more expensive than front-wheel drive vehicles.
The suspension is quite reliable The chassis is energy-intensive and provides the vehicle with excellent stability and controllability. Front suspension type McPherson, rear - semi-independent. The "running gear" is similar to its predecessor, however, changes were made to its design - for example, its attachment points were moved in the front suspension, the shape of the lever became different, the structure of the shock absorber support was modernized, etc. But the ball bearings and silent -blocks are inherited from the old version. Most of the suspension parts are reliable and durable, only the rear silent blocks of the front levers (“go” 60-70 thousand km) and the rear springs cause complaints - they often sag. It should be noted that the front suspension of all versions is equipped with an anti-roll bar, which was not present on the Golf-II.
The rack and pinion steering is crisp and provides good feedback. In addition, as a rule, most versions have a power steering, for long-term operation of which you need to change the oil regularly (every 70 thousand km).
Brakes for versions up to 90 hp equipped with front disc brakes and rear drum brakes, but all the others have disc mechanisms in front and behind. Quite often, the "troikas" also have the ABS system.
What's the secret? Despite its shortcomings, VW Golf-III is popular to this day. Reasonable cost of maintenance and spare parts, small size, practicality, versatility and, most importantly, its image - these are the main qualities for which this car is appreciated by domestic consumers. And for which, in fact, they overpay.
