Modern mainline trucks and heavy construction equipment are equipped with a 24-volt diesel autonomous interior heater, which is associated with the peculiarity of the fuel used and the voltage of the on-board network. In American tractors, the power supply voltage of passenger vehicles is used, therefore, an autonomous heater for the passenger compartment of diesel power supply of 12 volts is installed.

It should be noted that diesel and gasoline autonomous interior heaters have a serious competitor - a gas heater for a car's interior, which uses natural gas or propane-butane as fuel. to the reliability of control systems required for the operation of an autonomous heater;
to prevent deviations from the preset combustion mode, the formation of a large amount of carbon monoxide, burnout of the chamber walls and, as a result, mixing of combustion products and heated air;

The classic version of the autonomous heater is a scheme when two circuits are simultaneously assembled in the heating device - an engine antifreeze heating circuit and a heat exchanger for the coolant sent to the cab heating system.
There are variants of an autonomous heating system with minor modifications that have a connected insulated tank or a hot water tank in the interior heating system. Such a boiler plays the role of both a heat accumulator and a hot water source. An additional pump pumps and heats the tank operating in boiler mode. Such an autonomous heater is most often used for mobile living quarters - mobile homes.
An electric autonomous heater, colloquially referred to as a "hair dryer", is used to quickly warm up the passenger compartment at low air temperatures. If your car has a battery with a capacity of at least 75 Ah, use an electric heater for the interior of the car, which is structurally a 12-volt analogue of a hair dryer, with the difference that instead of 220 V home power, a voltage of 12 V battery and generator is used. car. The most common and affordable heater design is a circuit consisting of a 12-volt fan-cooler used in power supplies and cooling systems for computers and a heating panel. The latter is made in the form of a frame or tube from a non-combustible and dielectric material. Elements of covers and cases of powerful electric starters made of PCB or fiberglass are suitable.
Alternatively, for use as a heating element of an autonomous heater, a nichrome spiral stretched on special mounting ceramic chips can be used. In this case, the panel can be made of any heat-resistant material.
Our additional heater of the passenger compartment is powered by a cigarette lighter and a voltage of 12 V, therefore, we use a low-resistance nichrome wire in the design:
measure with a tester the resistance of 1 m of wire;
to obtain a maximum current of 5 A, we cut off the length of nichrome with a resistance of 2 ohms and make a spiral by winding the wire onto a rod or pencil;
stretch the resulting spiral a little so that the distance between the turns of the spiral is at least 2-3 wire thicknesses;
Based on the obtained length of the spiral, we will select the dimensions of the heating panel such that there are at least 4-5 rows of the heating element in the cross-section of the frame.
fix the spiral on the mounting frame, install the fan and connect a two-core cord with a wire cross-section of at least 1.5 mm 2 to the output contacts.
After assembling the structure of an autonomous electric heater, we test it by connecting it to the battery terminals for a short time. If the installation is done correctly, the heater coil should not warm up to the "red" state, the direction of air flow supplied by the fan should correspond to the calculated one.Otherwise, it is necessary to change the polarity of the connection and take into account when connecting the plug to the cigarette lighter.
