DIY motorcycle tank repair

In detail: DIY motorcycle tank repair from a real master for the site my.housecope.com.

As a rule, the repair of the gas tank is required due to mechanical damage or significant clogging, as a result of the use of low-quality gasoline. If the operating conditions are violated, the fuel tank can corrode.

The motorcycle is used for only a few months of the year, and the rest of the time it sits in the garage. When the tank is idle and empty, condensation builds up on the tank walls, leading to rust over time. Then the rust gets into the carburetor and causes it to break.

There are many ways to prevent fuel tank corrosion. The easiest way to protect against rust is with epoxy. Its main purpose is to bond the surface of the tank with rust and prevent further corrosion. In order for this protection to be effective, it is necessary to perform all actions correctly.

  1. We remove the remaining gasoline and remove the tank.
  2. Remove the cap and other parts from the tank.
  3. We blow out the inside of the tank with compressed air to remove all debris and gasoline vapors. Then we glue the outer surface. We close all the holes well, except for the filler neck.
  4. We wash the tank with a solvent. Leave to dry.
  5. Cooking epoxy resin. Pour the resulting mixture into the gas tank and cover the inner surface with rotational movements. The duration of the procedure is 2-3 minutes, after which the remaining resin is poured out of the tank. Leave the tank to dry completely for 2 hours. Drying period can be up to 24 hours.
  6. After the resin has dried, the tank is collected. All components must be installed very carefully so as not to confuse anything.

  • In order not to lose the bolts and nuts, after dismantling the tank, they should be screwed into place.
  • In order to make it easier to work with the resin, it must be warmed up. It is advisable to warm up the gas tank to 35 ° C. After warming up, the surface coating will pass more easily and the resin will better eliminate accurate errors.

If the tank has received mechanical damage in an accident or fall, it should be handed over to professionals. Often, the driver will not be able to fix such breakdowns on his own.

This may require not only leveling the surface, but also welding.

Your iron horse may need to repair a motorcycle fuel tank at the most inopportune moment. It may not be suitable for the situation, if the motorcycle stops working in the middle of the road, or it may not be suitable for the financial component.

Service services can cause great damage to the budget, and therefore many are wondering: is it possible to fix a motorcycle gas tank with your own hands? The answer is yes, it is possible to repair the motorcycle tank yourself. But in order to start, it is necessary to determine what the cause of the breakdown is connected with and in what way it must be eliminated. The following options are possible:

  • the use of welding (suitable if the damage was caused by mechanical shock);
  • cleaning the gas tank (unfortunately, its blockages often become the causes of breakdowns);
  • cutting new threads for working holes.

If the cause of the breakdown is mechanical damage, which may arise due to a fall from a motorcycle or an accident, you will encounter a dent on the tank. This is not uncommon, because, as you know, those who do not drive do not fall. Repair in the service can cost a fairly large amount, but it is possible to avoid spending - repair the motorcycle tank yourself.
The first step is to assess the damage. Determine the surface that we will deform and clean it of paint. To straighten dents, there is a special tool - a reverse hammer. However, if you do not own it, do not want to buy it and cannot borrow anything terrible from anyone. There is an alternative way. To implement it, let's start with the fact that we need a braided steel cable. It is necessary to untangle about five centimeters, and make tinning. It is also necessary to tin the dent. After that, part of the unwound cable must be soldered to the part of the tank that we need to straighten. And then it's all about brute force, the main thing is to act carefully: pull the cable. This can be done both evenly and in jerks.

After removing the damage, it remains only to get rid of the solder.

Now, you need to prepare the motorcycle for painting. To do this, you must clean the surface of the tank, level it, prime it, and actually paint it.
In some cases, welding work cannot be avoided for repairing a motorcycle tank. If you make them yourself, in any case, do not forget about safety!

Even if the gas tank is now empty, gasoline vapors can still accumulate in it. Therefore, before using welding, be sure to rinse the container and dry it.

Another cause of breakage can be rust or blockage.
The main reason for blockages in the tank is the poor quality of gasoline.
Corrosion is often the result of a misuse. You can get rid of it with epoxy resin. This method is the simplest and most effective, and therefore widespread. In order for this method to fully work, you need to correctly perform all the actions.
First, you need to remove the tank and remove the remaining gasoline from it. Remove all parts from it. Next, we need to get rid of gasoline vapors. Why you need to blow out the tank with compressed air. Now, leaving the filler neck, we need to plug the rest of the holes.

Flush the gas tank with thinner and let it dry. While it dries, we can prepare an epoxy. As soon as the tank is dry, pour it into the gas tank. With the help of rotational movements, for two to three minutes, we distribute the resin over the entire inner surface of the tank, after which we pour out its remnants.

Now, the tank needs to be dry. On average, this will take about two hours, however, this is an individual process, and it can take up to a day.

After drying, it remains only to collect the tank.

But what if the inside of the tank is already covered in rust? And why is this happening? Let's start with the reason. The main source of corrosion results is a simple motorcycle without a ride with a half-empty tank. This danger arises from the fact that it is not possible to ride a motorcycle all year round. It is used from only a few months a year, the rest of the time it is idle. In the event of a long downtime with a half-empty tank, most of it does not interact with gasoline, and in the intervals between winter and summer, temperature differences are by no means a rare phenomenon. As a result, water vapor is formed on the walls. Therefore, if you want to protect your motorcycle from rust, knowing that your iron horse will have a long downtime, fill the tank full.

The reason is clear, but how to deal with the consequences? This depends primarily on the amount of rust covering the walls. If there is a lot of it, then you can resort to the following method. We need some nuts for it. If you do not have them, you can replace them with other parts, the main thing is that they are not pointed. So, put the parts inside the gas tank. Now you need to fill them with gasoline. Then, after closing the tank, shake it thoroughly for five to ten minutes. Then pour out the resulting mixture. It will not be superfluous to carry out another flush, but this time with just gasoline.
This method will not completely clean the tank; it will only remove large parts of the rust. If the rust build-up is small, you can remove it with the help of a specialized tool.

Such a fight against rust has one drawback - these substances penetrate quite deeply into the tank, which can affect the painting of the tank. There are also non-standard ways to get rid of rust. For example, there is a lot of talk nowadays about cleaning with Coca-Cola. This is possible due to the content of phosphoric acid in it.

When saving your tank from rust, do not forget about your own safety. Rust converters contain acids that affect our skin, so do not ignore rubber gloves while working.
There is another popular method for cleaning the tank. It is based on electrolysis.

First, let's prepare a solution of water and soda, for two hundred grams of salt, we need twenty liters of water. Pour the resulting mixture into the tank. Now, you need a 12V battery. The wire from the positive anode must be placed in the tank. It should not touch its walls. We connect the negative anode to the body of the gas tank. Ready. Now you need to leave the tank. After a few days, it will be free of rust.

There is a danger that the cause of the breakdown lies in dirty gasoline. It affects the performance of the vacuum fuel valve. It has a rather slender design. As a result of exposure to dirty gasoline, it loses its stability and begins to let gasoline into the engine oil. This is definitely very dangerous. The consequences depend on the amount of gasoline that got into the wrong place. It can come to a loss of engine power. Many, when they find such a problem, look for its solution in the carburetor, not realizing that the reason is completely different.

Repairing a motorcycle fuel tank at home is possible, if you have the necessary tools, you can easily return your iron horse to service, regardless of its company, because the gas tank of a Ural motorcycle can be repaired in the same way as a Honda gas tank. Most importantly, do not forget about caution and safety.

I remember that in 1812, right after Napoleon was driven away, I decided to get rid of the dents on the tank of the Kawasaki Zephyr 400, my first Japanese. In those distant times, I loved, as they say, “disappear in garages”. The reason was the need to maintain the motorcycle, and at that time the reason was not empty - there were few motorcycle services, there are even fewer intelligent mechanics. The reason was a pleasant party of terrible bikers on the face, but kind inside, constantly poking around in their Urals. I myself had just switched from this to the Japanese, so topics for conversation with beer were easy to find. By the way, I still communicate with pleasure on occasion (Petruchio, call me, I lost your business card!)

The then motorcycle culture is still waiting for its explorer, but now it's not about that. There was a certain Roma in the garages - a Georgian under two meters in height and heavily over a hundred in weight, he was engaged in tin can. As an advertisement for quality, he showed his Tavria without a handle on the passenger door - everything was done as if there shouldn't be a handle, just a perfectly smooth panel.

Roma rolled out the amount. In response to my reasonable question "hop-hop?", He told me the technology of the tank straightening. To begin with, all residues of gasoline are expelled from it with water under pressure. Now I don’t remember, it seems, then it also lays off for several days, so that the fuel vapors finally evaporate. Otherwise, the slightest spark - and there will be nothing to rule and no one to rule. Then the bottom is cut out at the tank, the dents are straightened, the bottom is welded back and the quality of the seam is checked. For this, gasoline is poured into the tank, not water. The fact is that it has a higher fluidity, so water may not seep through a microcrack into which gasoline will crawl through. If the hole is still found, then the history of washing, airing and brewing is repeated from the beginning.

I don’t know if it’s true that the tanks are governed in this way, here, for example, they are suggested not to rinse them before work, but to bake them. But for a long time I had the impression "well, nafig it, dents do not affect the speed." However, as Sashman recently told me, bakeware has gone a long way since the days of Napoleon.

In general, there are two ways. The first is to fix the dents from the inside. A call to the contact phone number revealed the following. The main condition is that the paint layer is not disturbed. Then, if the dent is small and "shallow", the guys undertake to fix it with their miracles. If the dent has sharp bends, then the method will not work. The fact is that cars have single metal, but double metal goes to the tanks (I don't know exactly what this means), so dents like in their photo gallery cannot be corrected from the inside. But you shouldn't despair. The specialist said that in a neglected case, they will glue special plastic caps to the dent from the outside with special glue and use them to pull out the tank. If anyone knows what a reverse hammer is, they will immediately understand that the principle is the same, only nothing needs to be welded. The glue, of course, does not spoil the paint and is removed without a trace.

The second method is so simple and witty that it seems as if it was invented by our left-handers in between forging fleas. But no - the video is in English. Here, however, there is a doubt, but whether this method will work on the double metal of the motorcycle, but the attempt is not torture. If suddenly someone tries, write down the result here, please.

According to the first method, the metal of the tank is not double, but simply thicker in comparison with the automotive body parts.
For the same reason, pulling the tank with glue is fraught with paint chips.
The miracle of pribluda (hooks) in most cases, in the process of work, are forced to rely on the edges of the filler neck or the hole for the fuel tap, and at the same time deforms them.

Thanks for the post. Do you know a tin can?

Double thickness - yes, I thought so.

As for the paint - even if they rip it off, it is easier to paint over the tank than to cut and boil it, or grind it after a reverse hammer. There is really one more subtlety - whether the inner lining of the tank does not shrink, otherwise it will begin to rust.

Pribludy - they lean, yes. Do they also rely on car repairs? If so, it turns out that the masters somehow know how to cope with this. If not - what prevents and do without it here.

By the way, a thought about the second method. There, the whole idea is in the alternation of heat and cold. Will the paint hold up, won't crack? And even if it is not suitable for the tank due to the thickness of the metal, then maybe one of the motorcyclists will use it to straighten his car.

Today I tried it - I stretched a little, but did not go to the end .. although I used Freeze to repair microcircuits .. maybe he is not as vigorous as on that video .. I will try again with the same spray - I will unsubscribe ...

Going on a long motorcycle trip, you need to be prepared for a variety of surprises. But, unfortunately, you cannot insure yourself absolutely against everything, and no matter how carefully you prepare the bike for the trip, some small dirty trick can still happen. What if you find on the road that the gas tank of your motorcycle is leaking? This is especially true for old bikes, which have already turned twenty or twenty-five years ago.

In this case, you can, of course, drain the gasoline, call a tow truck and deliver the motorcycle to the nearest repair site, thereby violating all your plans. But what if the problem caught you very far from home, or in a deserted place, where mobile communication almost does not work? After all, it also happens. In this case, it will be great if you have a bag with all kinds of rubbish in your wardrobe trunk, which usually prudent bikers take with them on the road according to the principle "you never know what, suddenly it will come in handy."

For temporary repairs, you will need a sharp object, for example, an awl or a nail, with which it is worth trying to expand the leakage, by draining the gasoline first. Then a self-tapping screw or screw is taken (this is where a bag of all kinds of rubbish comes in handy) and screwed into the hole. As a gasket between the head of the screw and the wall of the gas tank, some kind of rubber band is suitable, which will tightly squeeze between them and minimize the risk of leakage

If the weld seam of the gas tank leaks, which, again, rarely happens with old motorcycles, then the course of action for temporary repairs will be as follows. If possible, having cleaned the surface of the tank in the place of leakage from dirt and rust, cover this place with soap, and do not spare the soap - put it in a generous layer. Then, if possible, wrap this place with dry thread and rub with soap again. But if there are no threads and there is nowhere to take them, just a layer of soap will stop the leakage of gasoline for a while. Of course, this method is suitable if gasoline is slowly oozing out from somewhere, and not whipping through the hole.

If you found a leaking gas tank in the garage, then you can say you're in luck, since it will be much easier to close the gap. The surface of the tank must be cleaned, degreased, and then a fiberglass patch should be put in place of the leak. The patch and the area around it must be epoxy-coated and allowed to dry thoroughly.

Unfortunately, no one is stuck from the falls. It’s not terrible, it happens, because only the one who doesn’t ride doesn’t fall. But now, after all, there is a dent on the gas tank and the gas tank needs to be repaired, and if a car driver with little experience is trying to edit the geometry of the tank, or the car tire driver uses his technology more rigidly, and does not use the car's anti-tank technology; , which in the future will lead to the formation of rust and the "happy" motorcycle enthusiast will eventually get an incorrect operation of the engine of his iron horse.

I ALSO USE THE MOST GENTLE METHOD THAT WILL KEEP ANTI-CORROSION LAYER AND RESTORES THE TANK GEOMETRY MOST OPTIMALLY!
This method consists in gluing special suction cups on hot melt glue and delicately pulling out the dents with a reverse hammer.

Cons of the method:
- Time costs;
- Maximum manual work (Nand Made);
- Demanding experience and patience of the master.
Advantages of the method:
+ The anti-corrosion layer is not damaged;
+ Optimal geometry restoration;
+ The refurbished tank will serve for many years; + Ability to pull out a fold of metal in case of serious deformation of the tank without opening it.

We also make repairs (crack soldering) of plastic on motorcycles, scooters, mopeds and body kits.
We will help you to paint any motorcycle element with high quality.

Repair, maintenance and care of your motorcycle friend

Under the cut I am posting a description of the method with a photo report on the work done. The author is not me, but Ivan Potapov, I just combed the report and posted it (he doesn't mind). You can send him an invite to BP 🙂

We drain the gasoline, unscrew the gas tap, the lid and blow the tank with air.

We clean the dent and a little around it with a circular metal brush (this is the nozzle for a drill).

This can be done with an abrasive (sandpaper), the result in any case will be something like this:

Next, we take a powerful soldering iron-ax ...

... and tinning the soldering points of the nut on the soldering acid tank. You can also irradiate the entire place of the dent, if it is small, as in this case.

Due to the lack of special tools and devices for tin work, I made a homemade reverse hammer (made in 10 minutes from an M6 bolt, an electrode with a diameter of 4 mm and a weight planted on it, weighing about 200-300 grams).

The trick is to choose the right solder spot. I started pulling from the edges of the dent.

Naturally, having irradiated the surface of the nut to be soldered, we solder it to the right place. I did not use a simple nut, but with an increased area that will be soldered (in fact, a piece of a 12 hexagon with an M6 thread).

To prevent the nut from moving from the selected place when soldering, I used an M6 hairpin with a length of about 120mm.

We solder. We are waiting for the solder to solidify. By the way, I used an unknown brand of solder, but it is refractory. It does not melt with an ordinary soldering iron. Actually, we fasten the return hammer to the soldered nut, and start, holding on to the load, tapping out the dent. The number and strength of blows depends on the depth of the dent. When the metal takes on its original shape, the nut simply comes off at the blow of a reverse hammer. That is, unlike welding, it is impossible to overtighten the metal.

The elongated surface can be trimmed with an ordinary hammer, preferably through a wooden block. It turned out very well. The solder from the metal is simply cleaned off with the same drill-attachment brush. A thin layer of putty will smooth out the micro-traps left on the metal. I think for larger dents a nut with a larger diameter will need to be used.

There are many ways to remove dents on the tank. Someone advises to bury the tank in sand, pour a little gasoline into it and bring a fire to the filler neck: the gasoline will explode and correct the dent. Someone pours peas into the tank, fills it with water and leaves until the peas swell and squeeze out a dent. Someone tweaks a ball camera under the dent and rocks it until it squeezes out the dent. More advanced repairmen fix dents with a reverse hammer.

Today we will go the easier way and try to remove the dent with the help of a compressor: this method is available to almost anyone, it is fast and quite effective.

As a visual aid, we will have a tank from the usual "Alpha". For some reason, almost all "Alfs" tank wrinkles for some reason from above.

There are also a series of dents on the sides

As much as possible - we seal the filler neck. The fastest option is to put a piece of rubber on the neck - put a plank on top and crush it with a clamp.

When we pump up pressure into the tank, it will begin to deform and so that the halves of the tank do not part, we pull the halves of the tank with a rope

We insert a purge gun into the hole of the fuel cock and pump air into the tank

After a couple of seconds, a characteristic pop is heard, signaling to us that the dent has straightened

Unfortunately, although this method is effective, it will not be possible to correct minor bruises with its help. We'll have to buy a putty and bring it to perfection by hand.

The reasons for damage to fuel tanks can be different, in one case, rust, in the other a normal trip on Russian roads. A small blow and almost immediately we begin to smell the smell of gasoline in the cabin. The fuel level arrow also tells us that gasoline is leaking out. How difficult is it to fulfill repair the fuel tank yourself ?

If gas tank leaking, then it is not safe to drive with such a breakdown, so do not postpone its repair for a long time. Before starting work, it is recommended that you familiarize yourself with:

  1. To drain gasoline from fuel tank, you will need to tilt the car with a jack to one side and use the tube. If the hole in the gas tank is at the bottom of it, then it will be faster to drain the gas through it. Then you should dry the gas tank from gasoline vapors.
  2. Gas tank repair without removal or it is better to dismantle it, they decide depending on the accessibility to the place of damage and the type of repair work.

Do you know how they used to do repair of a fuel tank in the field our grandfathers? If a small crack appeared in the fuel tank, then the hole was rounded with a screwdriver. Next, we selected a bolt of a suitable size for this hole and tightened it, first we put rubber washers on it (from the wheel chamber).

Hello everyone! My name is Mikhail, now I'll tell you a story about how I managed to exchange a dvenashka for a 2010 Camry. It all started with the fact that I was wildly annoyed by the breakdowns of the two, like nothing serious broke down, but the little things, damn it, so many things that really started to enrage. Here the idea was born that it was time to change the car to a foreign car. The choice fell on the tayet Camry of the tenths.

This method at the moment remains the most popular for car enthusiasts. It is based on a material called "cold welding" that can be found in any home store. The meaning of this tool is that when the two components are mixed, the resulting plasticine-like mixture hardens after 10-30 minutes, which is ideal for patches.

If the damaged surface is first cleaned from dirt and dried, then repair by cold welding will be durable enough that you are unlikely to ever return to this damage. However, if you try to repair the hole in the gas tank without prior preparation, the treatment will be temporary.

This is probably the most high-quality gas tank repair... Before starting work, the tank is dismantled. If this is a gas tank 2110, then its removal / replacement is detailed in the repair instructions. If the fuel tank is seriously damaged, then a piece of the tank is cut out and a new one is welded in its place.

It is important if it means repairing the gas tank by welding, then filling the tank with water is a prerequisite. This method is applicable if the damage to the gas tank is minor. Now more and more often you can find services for the repair of fuel tanks with argon, but if you have a welding machine and skill, you can restore the gas tank on your own:

Repair of a plastic fuel tank has its own characteristics. For example, the cold welding method is unlikely to help here, because the plastic of the tank has poor adhesion. Soldering method is the only way, but pieces of the same plastic will be used as the solder, and the reinforcing material will be copper / metal mesh with a fine pitch.

The process is similar to repairing a bumper: We clean the surface to be treated. We cut out the mesh according to the shape of the damage and apply it to the places of damage. With a heated soldering iron, we melt the mesh into the plastic body.

In reality, the work of a motorcycle gas tank repairman is a glassblower, and we will try to reveal this statement. Let's talk a little about the types of damage and dents on gas tanks, as well as the types of repairs and tools used in the practice of a motorcycle workshop:

This is one of the most common types of damage to motorcycle gas tanks, which is typical for Japanese and Chinese motorcycles (as the thickness of the metal is relatively small). This damage occurs with a sharp pressure or soft impact. This damage is repaired by simply blowing the flapper or pulling it out with the suction cups. These methods of repairing motorcycle gas tanks allow you to straighten out a dent without damaging the outer paintwork and the inner anti-corrosion coating.

2) Dents resulting from motorcycle fall, hard impact.

These dents, if possible to crawl to the tank from the inside, are straightened by traditional straightening with hammers, as well as by pulling with reverse hammers (spotted method). This method leads to damage to the paintwork and the inner anti-corrosion layer.

These are relatively simple damages associated with the contact of the tank, as a rule, with asphalt. Several methods are used here - removing the external geometry with putty or tin

4) Cracks, damaged stiffeners, ragged metal

These are the most difficult cases. They require the use of all of the above methods when repairing motorcycle gas tanks. Also, in the event of ragged damage to the metal, tin soldering is used. Stiffeners are not always elongated. In many cases, it is necessary to restore the external geometry by soldering tin. When soldering, in order to avoid problems with the further application of paintwork on the moto tank, it is very important to use not a standard soldering acid, but a neutral PH flux.

In our work, we have improved the spotter method. We try to avoid the use of cooking for attaching the hooks for pulling out dents, using the gluing of the suction cups with a special heat-resistant compound. This avoids many problems that may arise:

  • burning a hole in the motorcycle tank when cooking the hooks of the reverse hammer
  • burning out and damage to the inner coating of a motorcycle gas tank, which prevents rust from inside the tanks

We talked about restoring the geometry of the tanks. After carrying out these activities, the motobags are prepared for painting in standard ways and transferred to the paint shop.

Below you can see examples of work:

Is there a dent on the tank of your motorcycle? It's okay, it happens, because only those who do not drive do not fall. But now the gas tank needs repair, and the service will take a lot of rustling papers for editing and painting ... But you can do everything yourself if your hands grow from the right place. You can fix the dent on the tank yourself!
First you need to decide on the extent of the damage. If the dent on the gas tank is small, and at the same time the tank itself is painted without any tricks like stickers under varnish or airbrushing, then you can do with local editing and painting. If the damage is serious, you will have to paint the entire tank. In the second case, everything is clear, but what to do in the first?

First, you need to estimate the surface area that will undergo deformation in the process of straightening the dent, and carefully clean it from the paintwork. Probably no one needs to explain how to rip off paint from a gas tank. Having finished with this, it is required to straighten the place of the dent. A reverse hammer is ideal for these purposes - a special device for straightening such dents. It is unlikely that he was lying around in your garage purely by accident, but you can buy or borrow it from friends.

But we are not looking for easy ways! Or, suppose we do not have a reverse hammer, there is no one to borrow it from, and the absence of extra finances does not allow to buy it. Then there is another way, but we need a soldering iron, soldering acid, solder and braided steel cable. An intriguing start, huh? So, it is necessary to clean five centimeters from one side of the cable, untwist it and tin it. Also, tinning must be subjected to a dent on the tank. When you're done with this, take the cable and firmly solder its unwound elements to the place on the motorcycle tank that needs to be straightened. Then we begin to apply moderately brute force - we pull on the cable, if necessary, we pull in jerks, only carefully, then the cable will not come off from the place of the solder. This way, you will gradually pull out the dent in the gas tank enough to be hidden during the painting process. Only if you still use a reverse hammer, and not all this Kama Sutra with a cable and a soldering iron, do not overdo it.

After finishing editing, remove the remnants of the solder from the gas tank (if you used the circuit with a cable), clean the surface, level, prime and prepare for painting. Everything can be painted, beforehand, of course, carefully covering with masking tape all those parts of the motorcycle that should not be accidentally painted.
