The starter bendix has a gear that contacts the flywheel of the vehicle's engine. In order to start the engine, it is necessary that the starter starts to rotate it at a speed of fifty to one hundred revolutions per minute. It should not rotate faster as it is not designed to do so. It can only work intensively for short periods of time. And it is for this reason that a dangerous situation can arise at the time of starting the engine itself. In this system, everything should work clearly, since the slightest delay can turn into a collapse for him. In the event that the driver did not turn off the starter in time after starting the internal combustion engine, the bendix protective element comes into operation.
The speed of the car's engine is much higher than the speed of the starter, so the role of the bendix in this case is to protect the starter from transferring torque to it from the internal combustion engine. The rotation of the bendix occurs only in one direction, it is not rigidly connected to the motor shaft, in a free state it can rotate. And at the moment when the speed of the internal combustion engine begins to exceed the speed of the starter, the clutch (another name for the bendix) turns freely.
Structurally, the clutch has the following form: two rings, and between them balls or cylinders are located, which in turn are supported by a spring. Constructive well-thought-out grooves on the inner side of one of the rings, in which these cylinders are located, make it possible to create jamming when rotating in one direction, and free in the other. Bendix has another common variation - the ratchet overrunning clutch. But this version is usually used on bicycles. But in order to understand how the Bendix works, you can take a quick look at it. It is used as a drive, when we pedal - the clutch spins and the bike goes forward, and when we try to spin in the opposite direction - the brake is applied. Hope my example is clear.
As mentioned above, the starter bendix can have several more options. For example, the shaft on which the clutch is located has sharpened splines, which are also the seat of the clutch. Here is the same system of work: when rotating in one direction, the coupling is rigidly locked with the splines, and when it rotates in the opposite direction, it comes off them and rotates freely.
The only significant drawback of the starter bendix device is its increased and very intense wear. At the same time, the nature of the wear is such that very often it is necessary to replace the entire bendix and it is not possible to replace only a separate worn out part, because all its component parts wear out approximately the same.
During operation, the starter constantly receives serious loads, and is also very often exposed to various irritants (dirt, dust, oil, moisture). All this leads to the rapid destruction of the insulating coating of the electric motor and to damage to the drive.
Among the other causes of breakdown and failure, the main one is the slipping of the bendix during free running. This occurs because a certain amount of dirt gets into the grooves and rollers. The first sign is the noise of the armature when starting the starter, while the crankshaft is stationary. In such a situation, repairs are indispensable.
In order to diagnose, directly, the bendix itself, you can do it by car. You need to do this as follows:
Now you have to listen.If you hear a sound that characterizes the rotation of the armature, then this is a sign that the starter bendix is slipping. This means that it immediately needs to be repaired or replaced with a new bendix.
If, as a result of such cleaning, you have not achieved the desired result, then you will have to remove the overrunning clutch and disassemble it.
I wish you success in this difficult and painstaking business.
The record shows how you can replace the bendix yourself and how to repair it at home.
Starter repair is a troublesome business, but by doing it yourself, you can save your family budget. During operation, the starter is constantly under heavy loads, and is exposed to dust, moisture, dirt and oil, which contributes to the rapid destruction of the insulation of the electric motor and breakdowns of the drive mechanism.
We have already written about some of the signs of a starter malfunction and about checking and repairing the retractor relay. Another malfunction that leads to the repair of the starter is the slip of the overrunning freewheel clutch - bendix, resulting from contamination of the grooves and rollers. In this case, when the starter is turned on, the noise of a rotating armature is heard, and the crankshaft is in place (this is good shown in instruction video for starter repair at the bottom of the page). Repair is indispensable here.
You can check the bendix directly on the car without removing the entire unit. For this you need:
If at the same time you hear the sound of the armature rotation, then the bendix is slipping and needs to be repaired or replaced with a new one.
To begin with, you can try to carry out a small repair and remove the contamination of the bendix without disassembling the starter. For this:
If, as a result of such a "not tricky" repair, the malfunction is not eliminated, you will have to remove and disassemble the overrunning clutch.
Starter repair with disassembly of the bendix is performed in the following order:
If you properly roll up the edges of the casing, then such a repair of the starter will extend the life of the bendix for several more years.

Starter Bendix (real name - freewheel ) Is a part designed to transfer torque from the starter motor to the car engine, as well as to protect it from high operating speeds at which the engine runs. Starter Bendix - this is a reliable part, and it breaks down quite rarely. As a rule, the cause of a breakdown is the natural wear and tear of its internal parts or springs. To identify malfunctions, let's first deal with the device and the principle of operation of the bendix.
Most overrunning clutches (we will call them a more popular word among motorists - bendix) consist of leading clip (or outer ring) containing rollers and hold-down springs, and driven cage ... The drive cage has wedge channels, which are of considerable width on one side. It is in them that the spring-loaded rollers rotate. In the narrow part of the channel, the rollers are locked between the driving and driven clips. As is clear from the above, the role of the springs is to drive the rollers into the narrow portion of the channels.
The principle of operation of the bendix lies in the inertial effect on the gear clutch, which is part of it, until it engages with the engine flywheel. While the starter is inoperative (the engine is off or is running in a constant mode), the bendix clutch is not engaged with the flywheel crown.
Bendix works according to the following algorithm:
The inner part of the bendix
The ignition key turns and current from the battery is supplied to the starter motor, driving its armature.
Due to the helical grooves on the inner side of the coupling and the rotational movement, the coupling, under its own weight, slides along the splines until it engages with the flywheel.
Under the action of the drive gear, the driven cage with the gear begins to rotate.
In the event that the teeth of the clutch and the flywheel do not coincide, it turns slightly until the moment when they enter into rigid engagement with each other.
The buffer spring, available in the design, serves to soften the starting moment of the engine. In addition, it is needed to prevent tooth breakage from impact at the time of gear engagement.
When the engine starts up, it starts to rotate the flywheel at a higher angular velocity than the starter did before. Therefore, the clutch twists in the opposite direction and slides along the splines of the armature or gearbox (in the case of using a gear bendix) and disengages from the flywheel. This saves the starter, which is not designed for high revs.
If the starter bendix does not turn, then you can check its operation in two ways - visually removing it from the car, and "aurally" ... Let's start with the latter, as it is simpler.
As mentioned above, the main function of the bendix is to engage the flywheel and spin the engine. Therefore, if at the time of starting the engine you hear that the starter motor is spinning, and from the place where it is located, characteristic metal clanging sounds - it the first sign of a malfunction of the bendix .
So then it is required to dismantle the starter and dismantle the bendix in order to examine it in detail and determine the damage. The removal and replacement procedure is described by us below.
And so, the bendix was removed, it is necessary to revise it. In particular, check if it turns only in one direction (if in both, then it must be replaced) and if the teeth are not eaten. Also check to see if the spring is loose. You should also remove the plug from the bendix, check its integrity, signs of wear, if necessary, it must be replaced. In addition, be sure to check if there is any play on the armature shaft. If so, the bendix should be replaced.
As mentioned above, rotation of the gear is only possible in the direction of rotation of the starter armature. If reverse rotation is possible, this is a clear malfunction, that is, the bendix must be repaired or replaced. There may be several reasons for this:
Reducing the diameter of the work rollers in the cage due to normal wear and tear. The way out is the selection and purchase of balls of the same diameter. Some car enthusiasts use other metal objects, such as bits of a drill, instead of balls. However, we still do not recommend doing amateur performances, but buying balls of the required diameter.
The presence of flat surfaces on one side of the roller caused by natural wear and tear. Repair recommendations are the same as in the previous paragraph.
Stitching work surfaces drive or driven cage in those places where they come into contact with the rollers. In this case, repairs are hardly possible, since such a development cannot be removed.That is, it is necessary to replace the bendix.
Another cause of breakage is wear on the gear teeth. Since this happens for natural reasons, repairs in this case are impossible. It is necessary to either replace the mentioned gear or the entire bendix.
Since the starter not only experiences strong loads, but also comes into contact with the external environment, it lends itself to irritants such as moisture, dust, dirt and oil, then free-running slipping can also occur due to deposits in its grooves and rollers. A symptom of such a malfunction is the noise of the armature during the start of the starter and the immobility of the crankshaft.
As a rule, in order to change the bendix, it is necessary to remove the starter and disassemble it. The procedure may differ depending on the model of the machine. Let's describe the algorithm from the moment when the starter has already been removed and to replace the bendix it is necessary to disassemble its case:
In the starter, an important value is given to the bendix, in the event of a breakdown of which it will not be possible to start the engine. And, if a characteristic metallic sound is heard at start-up, this indicates the immediate replacement of this part.
Qualified craftsmen are not even recommended to try to repair the bendix; according to them, it is much more expedient to change the old worn-out part with a new bendix. Such timely replacement of the bendix, and not its repair, will prevent the imbalance of the internal parts with the prospect of increased wear of the starter engine.
Bendix is also called a freewheel clutch, which refers to the working element located in the starter of the car. Torque is transmitted by gear from the starter motor to the flywheel of the internal combustion engine. But the gear cannot be in long-term engagement with the flywheel, since the starter must take a short time to work, after which it must cool down. And in order to insure the starter engine against the effects of the internal combustion engine, the bendix is intended.
Even with a wealth of experience, it is difficult for the foreman to deal with malfunctions in the starter on the fly.
After all, the reason for replacing the bendix can be not only the worn teeth of the bendix gear, it can also be the worn bushings on which the starter shaft is mounted, and maybe a common reason is the deterioration of the retractor relay. So it takes experience to find the cause of this tainted part. Some masters carry out diagnostics on special stands in several loads:
And for someone it is enough to move his hand to understand the need to replace the bendix.
Replacing the bendix yourself is not as easy as it seems at first glance. To change it even on the simplest domestic car, you will need to remove the starter, and this work can be accompanied by a number of difficult moments. Still, you can try to replace it yourself. And so what needs to be done:
From a theoretical point of view, there are no problems to change the bendix, but from a practical point of view, it is somewhat cumbersome and difficult, but quite doable.
But what about the repair of the bendix? In principle, even, according to the opinions of professionals, conversations about the repair of this part should not even arise.
This is due to the fact that modern machines have almost the same wear resistance of parts located in a single unit. This means that you can be sure that if one gear is worn out, then after it, almost immediately, the next one will deteriorate, and so on. Therefore, it is much more practical to completely change the bendix, besides, the cost of the part itself is low.
So, to change the bendix, you should do:
Removing the starter;
Parsing the starter;
Replacing the old bendix with a new part;
Assemble the starter in reverse order.
When starting work on replacing the bendix, it is advisable to completely remove the battery, since even a short circuit can lead to serious consequences.If you have any questions or doubts, you should seek professional advice.

Self-replacement of the starter bendix
During operation, external stimuli act on the starter, it is exposed to dirt and moisture, which adversely affects its functionality. And therefore, a common malfunction of the electric motor, perhaps, is the slip of the freewheel, better known among motorists as bendix.
In order to avoid significant costs for repairing a starter in service centers, you can carry out this procedure at home. Yes, it is not an easy and troublesome business, but when you know your "iron horse" from a small screw to a speedometer - you can do everything!
Bendix is an overrunning freewheel that consists of a gear and a special device, all located in the starter housing.
Unit in good working order:
scrolls in one direction only;
when you try to turn it into another, it stops.
How does starter bendix work? When the ignition key is turned all the way, the bendix is set in motion by the anchor of the retractor relay. The gear meshes with the crankshaft flywheel and spins it. The combustible mixture is ignited in the combustion chambers and the engine starts to run.
As soon as the crankshaft rpm exceeds the rpm of the electric motor itself, then the overrunning clutch disconnects the gear and the starter shaft.
Repair or replacement of the solenoid relay.
If we talk about signs of malfunction of the starter bendix. then you can hear the noise of a rotating starter when the car is started, but the engine shaft itself does not rotate. This pinion gear does not mesh with the crankshaft flywheel. This is also the answer to the question of how to check the starter bendix without removing it from the car?
In this case, the replacement of the bendix on the electric motor or its repair is required.
You need to take the right-sized wrenches, screwdrivers and your "golden" hands! When repairing the starter bendix with his own hands, the car owner first of all should try to clean the unit from contamination, without disassembling it (and suddenly it turns out - to reanimate).
remove the starter from the car;
immerse part of the electric motor with bendix in a container with gasoline for 5-7 hours;
sometimes approach and rotate the clutch gear in a gasoline container;
take out and dry the unit well.
If the malfunction remains, then you need to remove and disassemble the overrunning starter clutch for repair.
1. First you need to remove the negative terminal from the battery and using a wrench, unscrew the upper mounting screws that connect the starter to the clutch housing. There should not be a third bolt, but if you are lucky, then you need to contrive in order to unscrew it.
2. Now you need to disconnect the wires suitable for the electric motor.
3. At this stage, you can see the condition of the flywheel (its teeth).
4. Next, use a screwdriver to unscrew the two screws located on the starter cover and remove the nut on the retractor relay (fastening the winding output).
5. You can now remove the brace washer and use a wrench to remove the tie bolts.
6. Inspect bushings for wear.
7. For the next steps take a rubber or wooden hammer, which you need to hit several times on the bottom of the starter housing and disconnect it.
8. Visually assess the condition of the windings and brushes.
9. Use a screwdriver to pick up the bendix's ears and remove them from the plug.
10. Now knock down the first retaining ring (you can use a wrench and a hammer), and remove the second with a screwdriver.
11. Remove the freewheel clutch.
Take a new freewheel and reinstall the removed bendix. Be sure to wash all parts of the mechanism, the grooves of the outer cage, clean the burrs on the working surfaces.
Attention: before assembling the unit, all the elements of the mechanism must be lubricated with grease.
After reinstalling the starter, connect the battery and start the engine.If all the manipulations were done correctly, then your car is ready for use.
: replacement of the starter bendix (instruction).
This completes the do-it-yourself bendix repair!
During the installation of the starter, it is important to check the integrity of the bendix gear and the drive of the unit.
The starter must not be dropped, it is a complex electrical appliance that can be damaged by internal components.
Before disassembling the starter bendix, be sure to check the battery charge. Such a problem often causes false panic and rash actions of the master.
If you find a cracked or worn plastic washer, it needs to be replaced.
When buying a new bendix, carry the old unit with you. Often, different couplings differ from each other in small details that are not visually remembered.
When disassembling the starter for the first time, it is advisable to write down the dismantling process on a piece of paper in order to prevent the slightest oversights when assembling it.
The most common snag when repairing a bendix is removing the retaining ring and reassembling it.
The stop ring has a slot for a retaining ring. Dressed on the opposite side of the bendix.
When disassembling the solenoid relay, be sure to remove the contacts from the winding so as not to damage the mechanism. When placing the brushes inside the holder, it is necessary to visually assess their condition; in case of delamination, they must be processed on a grindstone and inserted into the holes of the holder.
An extremely important element of an automobile engine, the starter motor enables it to start by turning the ignition key. Of course, if it is fully functional and the battery is charged. Naturally, like any electric motor, an automobile starter requires a fairly careful attitude and periodic preventive measures. So, during operation, you should remember about the short-term mode of its operation - no more than 15 seconds, and in case of an unsuccessful start-up attempt, the break should be at least 30 seconds.
An element such as a bendix is of sufficient importance in the design, in the event of a failure of which it will be impossible to start the engine. The breakdown is indicated by a characteristic metallic sound when trying to start the engine. Despite the fact that the electric motor is in perfect working order, the breakage of the bendix makes it impossible to start the engine. As a rule, it is impractical to repair the bendix, and if problems arise with it, it is much easier to replace it with a new one - this will prevent the imbalance of the internal mechanisms and significantly extend its service life.
Bendix, or freewheel, is used to transfer rotation from the starter to the engine crankshaft and spin it up. The design of the bendix is such that after a successful start of the engine and the beginning of its independent rotation, its gear is disconnected from the crankshaft, and the starter stops working. Despite the high-quality steel from which the bendix is made, its teeth wear out over time, which leads to difficulties when trying to start the car - the gear simply slips and is not able to hook the crankshaft flywheel.
Problems with the bendix are eloquently indicated by such a situation when, when the ignition key is turned, the starter starts rotating, but the crankshaft remains stationary and the engine does not start. For self-diagnosis of the overrunning clutch, many car owners use a simple but extraordinary method. After dismantling the starter and fixing it in a vice, it is connected to the battery. A wooden block is taken and rests against the bendix of a working starter. If it is fully functional, the block will start to grind, if the bendix stalls and the starter continues to rotate, the overrunning clutch will have to be replaced with a new one.
If you decide to change the overrunning clutch yourself, you should be prepared for certain difficulties.The first thing that can cause some difficulty is dismantling the starter. It is attached to the engine at three points, one of which can only be reached from the bottom of the vehicle. This will require either a lift or a pit. After the starter is removed, you will need to knock down both lock washers. Manipulation is quite laborious, and even professionals, "armed" with a large number of special tools, spend a lot of time and effort on it.
Trying to repair the old bendix on the starter is not worth it. This is due to the fact that the service life of all parts in one unit is approximately the same, and if one of the gears is worn out, the next one is almost guaranteed to "fly" as well. By the way, the cost of the bendix is not that great. The algorithm of actions when replacing the starter bendix is as follows:
unscrew the fasteners on the starter housing and disconnect its housing;
unscrew the relay, remove the washer, rubber insert, relay core;
dismantle the bendix directly, for which it will be necessary to release the stopper, the design of which may differ on different starters;
after that, the old bendix is removed, and a new one is installed in place;
the structure is assembled in the reverse order.
More details about this procedure are described in the video:
VIDEO
It is not always easy to understand that it is the freewheel that is causing the difficulty in starting the engine. It is unreasonable and too laborious to remove the starter every time to check it, and the reason for the difficult starting of the motor can be not only a malfunction of the bendix, but also problems with the retractor relay or a worn bushing on which the starter shaft is mounted - replacing the clutch in this case will not solve the problem. Diagnostics of the bendix requires dismantling the starter, and many specialists prefer to check it on special stands that test it in two modes - under load and without it.
Other methods of checking this unit cannot give an exact answer to the question of why difficulties with starting periodically arise. For this process, literally everything matters - from the state of charge of the battery to the state of the electric motor itself. If the car owner does not have enough experience, then it is not worth trying to diagnose the starter on his own, because, despite the external simplicity, its design is quite complex, and any unprofessional actions may end in the need to completely replace it, which does not differ in low cost.
Since in order to replace the bendix, the starter must be dismantled, it is advisable to carry out a full check. To do this, in addition to visual inspection, you should use a multimeter, and measure the length of the brushes, which should be at least 12 mm. In addition, some simple rules should be followed.
In no case should the starter be dropped, and also allow mechanical stress on the case - you must remember that this is a complex electrical device, the internal parts of which are quite easy to damage.
Before dismantling the starter for diagnostics, you should check the charge of the battery, since quite often its weak charge can be mistaken for problems with the starter bendix.
The plastic washer can be badly worn or cracked, so it is best to replace it right away.
Going to the store for a new bendix, you should definitely have an old one with you, since they may differ slightly in small details, which are almost impossible to visually remember.
If the starter is being disassembled for the first time on its own, all steps should be written down on paper - this will help to avoid mistakes during its subsequent assembly.
It should be borne in mind that it may be necessary to replace the bushing of the starter bendix, or, for example, brushes, if they are badly worn out. Therefore, it will be nice if you have all the necessary spare parts at hand - this will allow you to perform all the necessary work as quickly as possible.Before you independently diagnose or repair a car starter, you should carefully read the car's operating manual or its technical documentation, since the symptoms of its malfunction can be confused with other engine problems. In addition, consultation with a more experienced car owner will not hurt.

Surely someone, like me, came across such a thing. You start the engine on a cold one, and after starting the starter emits a characteristic sound like "bzh-zh-zh".)) This is due to dirt in the overrunning clutch, the starter bendix does not immediately disengage from the flywheel. I want to share how I treated it.

The bendix clutch itself is closed with a rolled cover (number “2”). We cut the cover in several places, expand it and remove it. There will also be a washer of two halves under it.

The rollers and springs of the clutch, which stop the bendix during the reverse stroke, are in oil mixed with dirt over time. We wash them in kerosene, put the gear, rollers and springs in place, fill in fresh oil.

We put the gear in place, two half washers (at VAZ, on others it may be different), close the lid and roll it back. After that, the bendix will work like new.

You can, of course, replace the bendix, and not fiddle with your own. But, I think, the longer the native part will stand, the more reliable the knot will be. Moreover, there is no guarantee that the replaced bendix will be lubricated. (Well, and a bonus - save some money))

And really - a good topic! Thanks for the science - the youngsters will come in handy.
In severe frosts, they stuck out in the garage, they tried to protect the equipment, so they did what. For example, I am batteries, generators and starters, because I was known as an electrician. Then a lot of things had to be done. And not only bendixes.
The starter was on the car for a long time, then some noises started. I took the car to the service, they said it was in the starter. We went through, replaced a couple of parts. A month later, the noise started again. I started looking for a new starter - I took a boo in the service. Not even enough for 3 months. I gave a decent amount of money despite the fact that it was a boo. I took it to the service, so they said that it was necessary to change the starter. On the recommendation of a friend, I went to the site (do not remember the name) and left a request for selection. Found me a Tesla Technics starter - korea. As soon as China heard it, not right away. Then they gave him a guarantee and decided to try it. The starter is over a year old. Spins well.
