The direct functions of the car's fuel system are both storage and further supply of fuel to the timing (stands for the gas distribution system of the car), as well as its filtration. The design of the fuel supply system consists of the following set of devices:
- Gas tank;
- Fuel filter;
- Gasoline pump;
- Fuel level sensor;
- Valve on the fuel filler cap;
- Hoses, connecting pipes;
- Balance tank.
Signs of damage to the fuel pump or fuel filter can be as follows, each point is a separate anticipated situation:
- Unable to start the car, the candles are dry. Very little or no pressure in the fuel line. No buzzing of the gasoline pump when the ignition is turned on / the starter is rotating. There are no flashes in the cylinders when rotating by the starter.
- Unable to start the car, dry candles. The pressure in the fuel line cannot be determined without a pressure gauge.
- At idle, the car works quite steadily, the candles are black. But if you press the gas pedal, the engine immediately stalls. Any attempt to move the vehicle will cause the engine to stall. The sound of the fuel pump may change.
- The vehicle starts up, in states of rest and movement, one can observe the following situations: in the first case, the engine picks up high revs quite quickly, but in the second case, you can observe some "twitching" at medium and high speeds. It is possible that the car does not pick up speed after reaching a certain value. The candles are usually white in such cases.
Video (click to play). |
It is worth saying that the above situations do not necessarily manifest themselves in full, and there are many other signs. In any case, you need to listen to how the gas pump works. Also, monitor the quality of the fuel used, because when using low-quality hot fuel, there is a high probability of damage to the entire fuel system of the vehicle, the cost of overhaul of which is clearly greater than the difference in the price of gasoline.
The filter is located on the front of the no-tank, so the car will have to be lifted anyway.
Remember! Fuel is pressurized in the system, so be sure to be careful when removing the filter.
In general, your actions boil down to the following algorithm, which is simple to execute:
- We substitute a specially prepared container for draining.
- We unscrew one of the fastening clamps, carefully release the pressure in the system, while twisting the hose. We remove this clamp.
- Remove the second clamp.
- We remove the filter itself.
It should be noted that the new filter must be installed in a specific direction, as indicated by the arrows on the element housing. Do not forget to check the tightness, for this you only need to start the engine and inspect the connections for possible leaks.
To carry out repair work to replace the fuel pump of a BMW e34 car, of course, a new pump, a screwdriver (Phillips), a small number of metal clamps, a vacuum cleaner, pliers.
The first thing that needs to be done right away is to remove the terminals from the battery, to exclude a short circuit and ignition as a consequence is not worth it. Next, remove the carpet and spare tire in the trunk. You should see something like the one in the photo below. You should be interested in a black plug secured with five screws.
Removing the cover, we see a large amount of sand inside. The power plug secured with a metal clasp must be removed. Vacuum up any accumulated sand.
Now is the time to carefully remove the fuel pipes. Let me remind you once again that the gasoline in the fuel supply hose is under pressure, so be careful. For ease of reassembly, it is recommended to mark all removed hoses. In this case, screeds with certain marks were used.
After opening the gas tank, unscrew the locking ring. Now carefully pull the entire device out of the fuel tank, including the level sensor. Note that the structure is connected by two pipes to the fuel pump. With your hand inside the tank, feel for the 2 plastic clips on the pump housing. Now you can get the entire unit completely out of the fuel tank. Prepare some rags as a small amount of fuel will still remain in the pump.
It remains to dismantle the old pump, attach a new one, if necessary, cut off the old power contacts and solder the new ones; perform all operations in reverse order. Then turn the ignition key several times (5-6) to the second position, then back. Why do this: with each turn of the key, the fuel pump turns on for exactly 1 second, and as a result, the required pressure is restored in the fuel system, air is removed.

Cost of replacing a BMW fuel pump?
Self-replacement of the BMW fuel pump. Attention! This manual is unified and fits most BMW vehicles.
This instruction is not a motivation for action and all independently performed work and their consequences are performed at your own peril and risk.
It is better to entrust the replacement of the BMW fuel pump to specialists.
The fuel tank of BMW series cars is located under the rear seat and "consists" of two halves. In the middle of the gas tank there is a recess for the propeller shaft.
There are only three elements in the gas tank itself, which sometimes require repair or replacement.
1. On the passenger side, the fuel pump itself and the fuel level sensor are located.
2. On the driver's side there is an additional fuel level sensor.
3. On the driver's side there is also a transfer pump (not always electric), it serves to equalize the fuel level in both compartments of the gas tank.
The recommended interval for replacing the BMW fuel pump is 150-200 thousand kilometers.
Masters BMWpitstop, recommend to carry out work on replacing the fuel pump with an empty tank (for example, when the fuel lamp is on).
Required tools and equipment:
- Gloves;
- Small flat screwdriver;
- Large flat screwdriver;
- Pliers;
- Clamps;
- A vacuum cleaner;
- Dry rags;
- Good mood;
- Beer;)
First of all, we must remember. The gas tank contains gasoline and highly toxic vapors. Replace in the street, summer cottage, or in a very well ventilated area.
Remember that the slightest spark can ignite gasoline vapors. Move away matches, lighters, etc.
Be sure to disconnect the battery terminals. Think about safety. Common sense comes first.
Step 2: Prepare your work environment
Move the front seats forward and create the conditions for quiet work and movement inside the cabin.
Remove the bottom of the rear sofa. As a rule, they are fastened with two clips 20 cm from the edges. Pull the seat up, first on one side, then on the other (don't be afraid to apply some force).
Release the seat belt buckles and slide the seat to the side.
The fuel pump is hidden under a dark sound-absorbing mat. Throwing it back, you will see the plugs holding the fuel pump.
The metal plugs are attached to the body with four bolts. Remove these screws and metal covers to expose the pumps and sensors.
Since the gas tank is technically on the outside of the body, it is likely that a lot of dirt has accumulated around it. Before unscrewing the stick caps, be sure to remove any dirt around it.
Use a vacuum cleaner if necessary. Do not allow dirt to get inside the gas tank.
Step 4: Remove the plastic locking ring
Each block is held in place by a large retaining ring. Unscrewing them is quite difficult, so arm yourself with a screwdriver, hammer and patience.)
Press the screwdriver into one of the lid ridges and unscrew it with gentle hammer blows. Be careful not to break the cover.
Step 5: Disconnect all connectors
Make sure the battery is disconnected and disconnect the connectors from the fuel pump unit.
Step 6: Disconnect the hoses (careful!)
This part of the job requires a lot of attention.
Remove the suction / sensor hose first. Look closely at the hose clamps and replace them with new ones if necessary.
Check the hose where the clamp is attached for scuffs and cuts.
Remove the hose carefully. Although the plastic of the pump unit is resistant to the effects of aggressive media, it can be very fragile at runs of 150,000 km (5-8 years of operation).
Use a small screwdriver to "peel" the hose off the plastic. Note that there may be fuel in the hose.
Therefore, use rags when detaching. It will be very difficult to erase the smell of gasoline soaked in the skin)
Step 7: remove and replace the fuel pump
Now that the hoses and connectors are disconnected, you can remove the retaining ring and pull out the gas pump a little. Keep in mind that a hose (suction) coming from the second part of the tank is also connected to the bottom of the fuel pump.
Using a small screwdriver, disconnect the suction hose from the bottom of the fuel pump. Pull out the fuel pump and try not to sink the suction hose, hold it.
Step 8: Replace the pump assembly
It's time to install a new fuel pump unit. Connect the suction hose to the pump until it clicks. Make sure the connection is secure.
The position of the pump during installation is also important. BMW engineers helped us with this and the pump is difficult to install incorrectly.
Some BMW models have special alignment marks that need to be aligned.
Change the gasket under the pump cover.
Step 9: Connect electrical connectors and hoses
Make sure you have correctly connected all connectors and hoses. Screw on the retaining ring. Connect the battery and turn on the ignition several times. After that, check the fuel pump cover for possible leaks.
Re-seal the pump if necessary.
Step 10: assembly and test drive
Reassemble everything in reverse order. And take a test drive.
Do not be surprised if the car does not start right away, the pump needs to pump out the air that has got there, and this may take some time.
Step 11: Open the beer)! Everything is ready! You are well done))
Which manufacturers should you choose?
Gas pumps from various manufacturers are used in modern cars.
Below is a list of the most common and quality manufacturers:
1. VDO-Siemens;
2. Pierburg (MS Motorservice International);
3. Bosch;
4. Walbro;
5. Magneti Marelli;
6. AIRTEX;
Cost of replacing a BMW fuel pump?
On almost all BMWs, the replacement cost starts from 2000r and is accurately calculated individually according to the car's wine code.
BMWpitstop specialists will always help you with replacing your BMW fuel pump.
The main element of the fuel system of a modern car is the fuel pump, the main function of which is to transfer fuel from the gas tank to the engine. This is one of the most capricious parts of a car, requiring constant monitoring and maintenance.Diagnostics, repair and replacement of the fuel pump can be carried out independently, without resorting to the services of a car service.
The main function of a fuel pump or a gasoline pump is to supply a certain amount of fuel under pressure to the carburetor (carburetor type motors) or to injectors (injection type motors). The fact is that the gas tank is in the back of the car, and the power unit is in the front. Therefore, fuel can flow to the engine only under a certain pressure, which is created by the pump.
The fuel pump starts supplying fuel when the engine starts. Inside the pump, due to the movements of the diaphragm, the inlet valve opens. Gasoline begins to flow, which in the next cycle of movement of the diaphragm through the exhaust valve under pressure is supplied to the engine.
On modern cars, two types of gas pumps are used - mechanical or electric... The former are used in carburetor engines, the latter in injection engines.
The mechanical pump is usually installed on the body of the gas tank, the electric one is inside the tank. Some car manufacturers use both types of pumps at once.
The mechanical fuel pump is quite large. Its main elements are:
diaphragm return spring;
When power is supplied to the gasoline pump, the lever begins repeated up and down movements. Due to these movements, the diaphragm is displaced, and gasoline enters first into the pump, and then into the engine.
This is how fuel is supplied in carburetor-type engines. Since the distance between the carburetor and the fuel pump is usually small, such devices can supply fuel even at minimal pressure.
Electric petrol pumps are small in size and simple in design. Inside the pump housing are:
diaphragm return spring;
The core of the electric pump is the core. Due to the additional valve, it reciprocates and opens the valves for the inlet and outlet of fuel. Such a pump works only at high fuel pressure in the system and heats up very much while the car is moving. For more efficient cooling, it is usually mounted in a gas tank.
The fuel pump is powered by the power unit. At the moment the engine starts, the on-board computer signals the fuel system to supply fuel. Electricity is supplied from the engine to the fuel pump, and a small motor inside the pump creates the necessary pressure in the system. In the first few seconds after starting the car, you can hear the gas pump humming, pumping gasoline.
A certain amount of fuel enters through the inlet valve into the pump chamber, then through the outlet valve into the fuel filter. There, the fuel is cleaned of dirt and impurities and sent to the engine. The fuel pump turns off automatically, together with the engine.
In cars with an injection-type engine, the fuel pump is located inside the gas tank, and in the case of a carburetor engine, under the hood or near the gas tank. On some models, two fuel pumps are installed at once: one on the gas tank, and the other on the engine. The exact location of the pump in your car can be found in the service book or operating manual.
The technology for diagnosing, repairing and replacing a fuel pump is usually not very difficult. If there is a desire, time and a minimum set of tools, all work can be easily performed independently.
In order to remove the fuel pump, it is proposed to perform a series of sequential steps.
Locate the device on the engine that is connected to the fuel supply system.
Disconnect the plug with wires from the fuel pump.
Disconnect the fuel supply hose.
Disconnect the collet and remove the four mounting bolts.
Gently pull the fuel pump out of the socket by hooking it onto the rubber gasket.
Often the cause of malfunctions in the operation of the gas pump is the gasket. The tightness of the connection between the pump and the engine and, as a consequence, the amount of fuel supplied to the pump depends on the degree of its deterioration.
Replacing the gasket is fairly straightforward.
To replace the rubber gasket on the fuel pump, it is necessary to remove the device and clean the seat itself about adhering dust and dirt.
- Remove the fuel pump.
- Remove oil and dirt from the pump seat.
Lightly lubricate the new gasket with gasoline.
Install the gasket into the slot.
Place the fuel pump carefully on the gasket and secure it with bolts.
To replace faulty elements, the fuel pump must be disassembled. The algorithm for disassembling the pump and replacing the filter mesh is not very difficult.
- Remove the housing by loosening the retaining clips.
- Disconnect the power connectors.
- Remove the tubes from the fittings. This can be tricky as the connection uses heat shrinkable materials and the tubing is tightly attached to the fittings. Cut the shrink surface with a knife and remove the tubes.
- Unclip the clips to fit the pump diameter.
- Remove the mesh.
- Remove dirt from the mesh. If there is mechanical damage, replace the mesh with a new one.
- Perform all the steps in reverse order.
A complete cleaning of the fuel pump, as a rule, is carried out in a car service. The pump is removed into machines, disassembled, washed with special means, dried by a compressor and assembled.
Gasoline in the fuel system is constantly under high pressure. However, sometimes, due to incorrect operation of the pump, the pressure can drop. In these cases, high pressure in the fuel system is created artificially. This process is called pumping the fuel pump. It is performed in several stages.
Disconnect the hose connecting the fuel pump and engine. To avoid fuel leakage, direct the hose into an empty container.
Rotate the starter without starting the engine. If at the same time the fuel pump has time to pump 0.5 liters of fuel in half a minute, then it is in working order.
To restore high pressure, connect a regular pump to the hose connecting the fuel pump to the gas tank and pump up the system with compressed air.
The fuel pump of the Volvo FH 12 is installed in the gas tank and is a rather complex device. Its replacement is carried out from the car as follows.
Remove the carpet from the trunk floor.
Fold down the rear seat backrest - underneath you will see a small hatch.
Using a 10 wrench, unscrew the five nuts securing the hatch cover and remove the cover.
Disconnect the fuel pipe chips.
Disconnect the two hoses from the pump, labeling each one first.
For trouble-free operation and increase the resource of the fuel pump, professionals recommend:
refuel only with high-quality fuel;
maintain the maximum fuel level in the tank;
do not use a car with a discharged battery;
timely replace the fuel filter;
use a sporty driving mode less often.
Self-diagnosis and replacement of the fuel pump is quite simple. To do this, you just need to carefully follow the recommendations of professionals. The same applies to preventive measures. Refuel with quality gasoline and do not forget to replace the fuel filter in time.Then you will have problems with the gas pump much less often. Good luck on the road!

First, we will explain what a fuel pump is and what work it does for your car. The gas pump is an integral part of the car's propulsion system.
You sit on the steering wheel of your car and turn on the ignition, but the car won't start? And you need to rush to an important business meeting or meet guests at the airport. The car starts, but after driving a short distance, it stalls. What happened? The obvious reason for the refusal of the car to obey you unquestioningly is the breakdown of the fuel pump, or rather its suction valve. If you, as a driver, are still far from the technical characteristics of car units, then we will tell you what this means.
First, we will explain what a fuel pump is and what work it does for your car. The gas pump is an integral part of the car's propulsion system. Where is the fuel pump located in the car? And this location is in two places, depending on the type of fuel pump. If your fuel pump is of a mechanical design, then you need to look for it outside the fuel tank. If you are the owner of an electric fuel pump, then this habitat is located inside the fuel tank. The main function that gas pumps perform is to supply fuel to the engine. Until recently, during the stagnation period, this car part was extremely difficult to get, especially if you have a foreign-made car, today it is not difficult to buy a gas pump for foreign cars. Now let's look at what reasons the gas pump can break down.
There will be two reasons. The first reason is very dirty fuel filters. And the second, no less important reason for its breakdown is the driver's habit of driving a car with an almost empty tank. If the spring of the suction valve of the gasoline pump suddenly breaks in your car, then you need to replace it with a piece of foam rubber. So let's get to work. Take a piece of foam rubber and cut a small cube out of it, so that its sides would ideally fit the dimensions of the fuel pump valve. The height of the parolon cube should be no higher than 8-10 mm. The valve should only slightly press against the seat. And all the work came to an end. You quickly and easily coped with the task. After the relay has been repaired, your fuel pump will work perfectly without failures for many more years.

Car electric gasoline pump repair. Why does the electric petrol pump fail and how to repair it
Article A short educational program: why is it necessary, what happens to it and how is the repair of an electric gasoline pump carried out.
In the earliest automobiles, fuel entered the engine by gravity. Because of this, sometimes curious situations arose when the rise had to go in reverse.
But this was only at the beginning of the distant twentieth century, and since then the fuel pump has become an integral part of the modern fuel system.
The fuel pump is based on an electric motor. If the resource depended only on it (and this is approximately what happens in Western cars), then the fuel pump would be enough for about 150-200,000 kilometers.
But the fact is that the fuel pump uses the fuel itself as a lubricant, and our fuel is somewhat abrasive:
- it is full of the smallest particles, which over time grind off the working elements of the pump, and it begins to lose its working properties long before the electric motor fails;
- if the fuel filter is heavily soiled, the situation is even worse.
As a rule, the performance of the fuel pump is much higher than required, so the initial signs of excessive wear can be detected in time. By extraneous noise. This is possible only in our conditions, since the worn-out mechanical parts of the pump begin to make noise.
Although the performance of the fuel pump significantly exceeds the operating parameters, it should not be delayed with the repair.
The fact is that at the moment the engine is started, the voltage of the on-board network drops sharply and the pump performance - even if it is enough for the engine to work - may not be enough to start it. In the end, the matter may end with a jamming of the fuel pump, and then the car will become completely.
The rate of wear can be somewhat reduced by timely cleaning of the fuel system and regular replacement of the fuel filter.
But in winter, the following can happen: if water is in the fuel, then it can freeze and short-circuit the armature winding. This can also lead to seizure of the fuel pump.
The wear of the fuel pump is accompanied by a rather amusing symptom: fuel consumption is reduced. But at the same time, the throttle response of the engine also decreases, so there is nothing to be especially happy about.
1. The first step is to release the pressure in the fuel system. This is done very simply, just remove the fuel pump relay, start the engine and wait until it stalls.
2. After that, the terminals are removed from the battery and the fuel module is removed from the gas tank. In some cases, for this you have to partially disassemble the interior, since the hatch is located under the sofa.
After removing the pump from the fuel module, its flaw detection is carried out, and then repair work is carried out.
3. Quite often, the fuel pump is jammed due to the fact that the protective coating of the inner surface of the bronze ring is erased. As a result, the ring collapses and becomes jammed.
The problem is not at all the low quality of the spraying. The essence of the problem is precisely the abrasiveness of the fuel, and therefore the problem can be eliminated only by changing the fuel.
In the event of such a breakdown, a new ring is made, the top layer of which is cemented. The rollers are also replaced - the fact is that they also work, and if only one ring is replaced, then the operation of the fuel pump will remain ineffective.
4. The electric motor of the fuel pump may also be damaged. In this case, the collector fails, or the brushes wear out. If the capabilities of the service station allow, then you can rewind the anchor.
If axles are produced, they are replaced with new ones with passport parameters. All worn out and broken parts of the fuel module are also replaced with new ones. Finally, the fuel module is assembled and installed back into the vehicle.
The process of repairing the fuel pump is a good reason to thoroughly clean the fuel system, flush the gas tank and replace filters and consumables.
on the topic -Honda Dio 56: repair of an electric gasoline pump in three parts.
Conclusion. As you understand, your desire alone will not be enough to repair the electric petrol pump. You also need special equipment, which is available at a good service station.
Or you have only two ways - to buy new parts or replace them from several faulty pumps.
When you have the time and desire, you can repair a gas pump on a VAZ 2106 with your own hands. In this article, we will tell you in detail about the self-repair of the fuel pump.
Repair of a gas pump on a VAZ 2106
You can clean (replace) the strainer and replace the diaphragms without removing the pump from the engine. But for the convenience of work, it is better to remove the fuel pump and disassemble it on clean paper or cloth.
Note, if you do not have time for repairs, you can simply replace the fuel pump with a VAZ 2106 with your own hands.
1. Using the "10" wrench, unscrew the pump cover mounting bolt.
2. Remove the cover and carefully remove the mesh filter.
3.We inspect the inlet valve (for which we press on it with a thin screwdriver), if necessary, correct its position in the saddle. We wash the filter in a solvent and blow it with compressed air.
4. Use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the six screws connecting the upper and lower halves of the pump housing.
5. Then we disconnect these parts.
6. Check the outlet valve in the same way as the inlet valve. We wash the upper part of the case in gasoline and blow it off with compressed air.
7. Rotate the diaphragm assembly 90 ° and remove it from the bottom of the case. Remove the spring from the stem.
8. Using the "8" wrench, unscrew the nut.
9. Then successively remove: the upper steel cup, two working diaphragms, outer and inner spacers, the lower cup and washer.
10. To avoid damaging the safety diaphragm when removing and disassembling the pump, which eventually sticks to the body and the gasket, separate it with a thin knife or flat probe.
11. After cleaning the filter and replacing the torn diaphragms, assemble the pump in the reverse order of disassembly.
12. Install the strainer into the pump casing so that its opening is located above the valve. The flange of the filter hole should fit into the valve hole.
13. After assembling the pump, check its performance. We lower the pump inlet into a container with gasoline and press the manual pumping lever several times. In this case, a pulsating jet of fuel should appear from the outlet nozzle. This means that the pump diaphragms are intact.
14. Again we lower the pump with the inlet pipe into the gasoline and, plugging the outlet connection with our finger, create pressure in the inner cavity of the pump with the manual pumping lever. After 10-15 seconds, letting go of the finger, we check for residual pressure in the pump - gasoline should come out in a stream. If it is not observed, check the tightness of the joints of the body parts and valves. If the tightness cannot be restored by tightening the screws, it is better to replace the pump with a new one.
Do-it-yourself repair of a gas pump on a VAZ 2106 has been successfully completed. Enjoy the trip.
If the dynamics of the car sharply decreased, "dips", jerks during movement began to be observed, and after parking the car would not start. You may have to resort to repairing the gas pump. Mechanical petrol pumps are less and less common, as they are not efficient enough to meet the needs of injection and diesel vehicles.
Electric gasoline pumps can be submersible (located in the gas tank), and pumping up. Their common function is the same - to provide fuel supply to the intake system.
Gasoline pumps of machines of the old generation are mechanical. Over time, their gaskets dry out and must be replaced. For replacement, only a screwdriver and a repair kit are needed. We remove the fuel pump, rinse it with gasoline (so that the dirt does not clog inside), untwist it and take out all the parts, remembering the order in which they are located. We replace the old parts with new ones from the repair kit. We collect the fuel pump on new gaskets. We carry out the assembly by tightening the bolts crosswise for a uniform clamping force. It happens that the reason is a breakdown of the fuel pump valve. It can be pressed out and replaced. But the part is extremely rare on sale as a spare part, and the replacement is quite difficult, so it is more advisable to buy a new gas pump. Also, a weakened diaphragm spring can serve as the cause of poor operation of the fuel pump at high engine speeds. Its normal length is 47mm. If, when measuring, the length differs from the standard, then the spring must be replaced.
There can be several reasons for the breakdown of the electric gasoline pump: this is a breakdown of the motor, a rupture of gasoline pipes in the body of the gasoline pump, a dirty mesh (internal filter). We remove and disassemble the fuel pump. The internal filter, corrugated pipes and the petrol pump motor can be found at auto dealerships.
Having disassembled the fuel pump, we look at the condition of the conductive rotor plates.If you have experience and a soldering iron, you can replace worn plates by replacing them with new, homemade ones. We grind new plates to perfect condition.
Diy fuel pump repair scheme:
With the replacement of pipes, everything is easier: a new gasoline pipe must be heated in boiling water until the rubber softens and put on the place of the old one.
The motor with the mesh can be changed without problems - we install new ones in place of the old parts, we assemble everything. As a rule, after such manipulations, the gas pump works like new.

Disconnect the fuel pipe pieces.
Disconnect the two hoses from the pump, labeling each one first.
For trouble-free operation and increase the resource of the fuel pump, professionals recommend:
refuel only with high-quality fuel;
maintain the maximum fuel level in the tank;
do not use a car with a discharged battery;
timely replace the fuel filter;
use a sporty driving mode less often.
