In detail: DIY repair of a suitcase on wheels from a real master for the site my.housecope.com.
- remove a broken part or a wheel with a mount;
- buy an identical product;
- attach it in place of the old one.
By the type of fastening of the wheel itself, they are distinguished as solid (the wheel is soldered into the general structure) and prefabricated (the parts are untwisted, assembled separately without special tools).
Models of suitcases are available where the wheels are held by bolts or screws. This allows you to unscrew the damaged part with a screwdriver, and replace it quite quickly.
Wheels with rivets placed under the lining of the suitcase will require more complex manipulation. On the inside, an incision is made along two perpendicular sides. It is desirable that this be at the edges, since later non-factory seams will be less noticeable. Use pliers or wire cutters to loosen the rivets. The wheel is replaced with an old design or new holders are mounted. The lining is then sewn neatly.
In the absence of visible external parts of the rivets or their breakage, the structure should be replaced completely and it is better to use the bolted method. Although it involves the same intervention under the lining layer, it will facilitate future repairs.
Often they use radical measures - they install new wheels with fasteners in a completely different place, and the old ones are knocked down.
Presentable appearance is just as important as the functionality of the suitcase; when buying new wheels, you should be guided by the principle of pairing (even if you need to replace only one) and identity (in terms of location of fastening, sizes of fasteners and wheels).
Before changing the wheels of a suitcase, an old broken wheel is taken to the store. This will help determine both the dimensions and the style of the product, its color. Sellers will provide their recommendations, but do not forget that their goal is to sell at a higher price, and for the buyer the purchase principles are a symbiosis of strength, beauty, and affordability.

It happens that it is not the wheels of the suitcase that needs to be replaced, but the broken legs. In this case, you need iron or wooden corners, or special plastic legs, which are sold at any hardware store. The variety of such products implies not only the color scheme, but also the size, height and width of the leg.
You can also replace the legs at home using available tools: in the presence of thick wire, tools and, of course, manual dexterity. The basis for the repair in this case is to recreate the exact geometry of the broken leg.

It's easy to buy a suitcase, but here's how to get it repaired. We will repair a damaged case in a suitcase.
Friends asked to have the travel bag repaired. Well, it is necessary, it is necessary ♂ This is an overview video. That.
Throughout the year, a person is waiting for the blessed time of vacations, remembering how great everything was (in most cases) the last time. And already to prepare for a new trip, pondering the upcoming trip and collecting money "in a pile". And now the long-awaited, but at the same time unexpected luck in the form of a “burning” tour came to the house. For packing 24 hours, we pack our suitcase and go!
Here are just a suitcase removed from the mezzanine shocks with its obscene appearance, and then we remember, yes there was a case, the wheel came off, but it does not matter, the trouble is that it is not known where it is. And one more, which is smaller, has fallen into disrepair and, most likely, the purchase of a new suitcase cannot be avoided. And this is an unplanned waste of money, which on vacation will not be superfluous. Therefore, we will make repairs.
First of all, it is necessary to remove the wheel arches from the attachment point, they are held on the body of the suitcase by some kind of rivets, the spreading tips of which (from the side of the interior of the suitcase) must be well squeezed "into a bunch" with pliers and then either knock them out with a weave nail (if not punch) with a hammer, or pull it out with the same pliers, hooking it onto the cap from the outside. It will not be at all difficult to do this, because this mount is essentially decorative. So the wheel arches are removed.
Next, we take the available wheels and go shopping or to the market in search of an adequate replacement. And don't ask for the wheels for the suitcase - you won't find it. Ask for inline skate wheels. You can easily find the bigger ones. But the middle wheel, of a smaller diameter, I found in a hardware store among furniture fittings, it was called a "support wheel". Please note that roller skate wheels have two bearings each, which means that they will not wear out, and the suitcase will move faster than the rolling one.
I note that earlier large wheels rotated on an axle with a diameter of 6 mm, and for new axles, a diameter of 8 mm is needed, but nothing needs to be drilled out, during operation, the old axles have already wiped the plastic of the holes just to the required size. The wheel is installed in the niche in the following order: the axle is passed into the hole in the wall of the niche, then a washer is put on without fail (to prevent the sidewall of the wheel from touching the walls of the niche), the wheel itself is installed, another washer, and the axle is inserted into the hole of the second wall. But the nut is screwed on after the niche is installed, but before it is fastened with screws.
The niche put in place is fixed with M6 screws with washers and a nut (it is better even with two - to counter)
He did not remove the supporting furniture taken in place of the middle wheel from the existing metal base, but sawed off the excess from it in order to fit into the niche. Due to the existing stop, the wheel did not fall into the niche due to the hole developed by the previous axis, but rose just as needed.
The assembled "undercarriage" would look no worse than the new one, if it were not for the wear of the bottom upholstery, however, "in working position" they are not visible. As for the performance indicators, they are clearly superior to the previous ones.
So I didn't have to buy a new "fellow traveler" for "from 2000 rubles and more." The suitcase is ready for further work and I dare to assure you of long-term use.

Replacing suitcase wheels
Judging by the statistics, this is the most popular blog page, however, it is not surprising - the season of vacations and suitcases, an integral attribute of the trip.
Let me clarify that this is not an advertisement for a workshop - this is an experience of independently replacing suitcase wheels with other, more suitable for this - wheels from rollers.
Replacing the suitcase wheels with roller skate wheels
Suitcases on wheels often suffer from one defect (and, regardless of the manufacturer) - too hard and loud wheels. A suitcase rattles like a cart if not carried over a perfect surface.
In other words - too noisy suitcase wheels. How can the situation be rectified? At the same time, let's see how to remove the wheels from the POLAR suitcase.
The problem is in the wheels themselves from the suitcase - they are usually made of PVC, which does not add shock-absorbing properties to them. Further, under the cut, my solution to the problem on the new POLAR suitcase - we strike a preemptive blow on the wrong wheels of the suitcase!
Worn suitcase wheel
Either a new but too hard wheel
We disassemble. The technique depends on the characteristics of the suitcase, in our case we had to drill out the riveted bushings
The most important part is the new casters. The most suitable in all respects are roller skate wheels. They are sold in different diameters and quality. So you can choose the right ones. The wheels in the photo are polyurethane, with bearings. The rest of the fasteners are from a regular store. It is important - try to keep the new wheels not much smaller than the old ones - otherwise the suitcase will fall or cling to the road.
We install a new wheel (a regular bolt and nuts), after having lubricated everything with Castrol CV joint grease
Photo from the reverse side - counter nut so as not to unscrew from vibration
We attach everything back to the suitcase
Inside view (by the way, POLAR suitcases are good because everything is zippered and lining too - you don't need to juggle anything)
All the assembly work took about 10 minutes (along with a photo) and voila!

Introductory - the farm has several excellent trunks, proven and reliable. One problem is that if completely filled, they become frankly inconvenient for more or less long carrying by one person. And I don’t want to buy a new bag with built-in rollers yet (we will leave this option in reserve).
All trunks have a fairly strong bottom and side walls, as well as many straps on all sides. Therefore, the idea to somehow attach / sew / fasten a pad with wheels under the bottom with Velcro is on the surface.
In general, before reinventing the wheel, I decided to first ask handy comrades - maybe someone has already done something similar. Share your experience, pliz.
As a result, I see the whole structure in something like this - a frameless trunk with external rollers. Possibly removable. No retractable telescopic handles are expected, the trunk stretches for the standard strap on the opposite end wall.
- The method of fastening - it is not kosher on the fabric itself, because it is necessary to put (I used plywood) something so that the wheels do not press into the bag - for it turns out dragging, not rolling. Rivets, bolts, etc. with washers only.
- The attachment point, in order to roll without touching the soil with the bag, I hooked it up without taking into account my growth, I still had to redo it - I scuffled the lower corner on the ground.
- A handle for carrying (I still did not bother - I tied a thicker piece of manila)
- You can often find carts of the type that old machine gunners in the subway use to inflict damage on the boots of the proletariat and the intelligentsia, but they can be spanked as an option.
- It is also important where to roll, concrete - no matter what wheels, but at a construction site and with sand that you need wider.
As a result, I switched to boxes that are inserted into each other because the wheels also interfere and cling during storage and the interior gets dirty (as a result, there is also a lot of dirt)
At the moment, there are a lot of such trunks (the dream of the occupier) on wheels as well as wheeled suitcases, I guess it's easier to buy.
I did not try the option with Four wheels, I assume the deflection in the center under the weight of the load

The best way to fix a suitcase is to take it to the workshop, where it will certainly be put back on its feet, or rather, on wheels. But what if you need to repair the retractable handle of a suitcase urgently, right during the trip? And the craftsmen sometimes ask for so much that this money would be enough to buy a simple replacement for a broken suitcase. If you are not very worried about the aesthetic appearance of the case, it will be possible to repair it, even if you are, well, very far from nuts and bolts. How exactly can this be done? It all depends on the degree of damage.
When the handle breaks on the way, the beauty and durability of the repair is out of the question. It is important to do everything quickly and relatively reliably: so much so that you do not have to drag the suitcase in your hands to the very destination. And a real professional of express repairs - scotch tape will help us to do this.
So, the most common problem is a fracture of one of the retractable handle tubes. In terms of doing it yourself, the situation is very similar to applying a splint in case of a fracture in a person.
- Find a rigid frame that acts as a tire. It might be a small metal pipe, but in the field you usually have to rely on a pencil, ruler or comb - the stronger the better.
- An improvised splint is applied to the fracture site along the pipe.
- Now the place of the fracture is wrapped with tape or electrical tape along the entire length of the tire, or at least 5-7 cm in each direction from the fracture.
Of course, folding the handle with the tire back will be unrealistic, so if you still have to check in your suitcase, limit yourself to simply wrapping the break with tape in several layers.
Not everyone takes scotch or duct tape with them on trips (but in vain!), So the short-sighted will have to try to replace this irreplaceable product with improvised means: a handkerchief, cling film from sandwiches, stationery clips, if they fit.
By the way, this method can be used even if the handle is broken in several places, practically crumbling. You just have to find a tire a little longer or increase their number, and you will need to wrap it up with tape more reliably.
So you brought a broken suitcase home, and now you have enough time to slowly deal with the problem and try to repair the telescopic system with your own hands. Let's say right away: without experience in welding and polishing metal, it will not work to make the handle look like new, so all aesthetes will have to go to the workshops. But if you only need functionality from a suitcase, you can improve the way to strengthen the rift by replacing the tire with a pin.
- Loosen the telescopic bolts and remove the broken part.
- Insert a reinforcement of the structure in the form of a metal rod of a slightly smaller width than the cavity itself.
- Secure the break with the same tape or tape.
- Fasten the reinforced structure with the bolts back.
If a break allows, you do not even need to twist the pipe out of the telescopic holders, but it is important that the length of the pin is equal to the length of the handle itself, otherwise your reinforcement will dangle inside.
Another possible problem that you can solve with your own hands is the unscrewing of the bolts that hold the structure and, as a result, the handle dangling from one or both sides. To repair it, it is enough to tighten these or put new bolts and nuts in place of the old ones, for which you need to get close to the frame from the inside through the upholstery.
If it was not the telescopic handle, but the stationary handle that was unscrewed, you can also secure it with a bolt and nut, if it was not mechanically damaged (not cracked, not broken into parts)
Choose suitcases with telescopic, stationary and side handles so that if one or even two of them break, you have a backup transport option.
The second most common problem with telescopic systems after they break is jamming inside the suitcase. This is especially unpleasant if the suitcase is heavy: you won't be able to carry it on wheels!
- First, feel inside the frame through the upholstery for the frame of the handle. Your task is to find holes with springs that fix it.
- Now these springs must be pressed simultaneously: the handle will be released and "shoot" out of the groove.
The reverse situation is also not uncommon: the handle refuses to assemble back into the groove, and the suitcase must be checked in. Unfortunately, without disassembling the structure, it is almost impossible to solve this problem. In order not to completely break the structure during transportation, you can try to dismantle it with your own hands, twisting the bolts under the upholstery from the inside, or ask someone more experienced to do it for you. Then pack the handle in the suitcase, and wrap the suitcase itself with packing film so that things do not fall out and get dirty through the hole.
The telescopic handle and its quality are almost the main criterion when choosing a suitcase. Give preference to wide handles made of strong and thick metal, and then the likelihood of their breakage will be lower.
In order not to have to repair the telescopic handle, just roll the suitcase for it, and do not carry, do not sit on the suitcase and do not hammer it with heavy things under the maximum permissible weight. Well, if a breakdown did occur, now you know how you can cope with it in emergency and at home without the need to resort to the help of a master.
Hello dear readers! But are you personally grateful to the Internet for the fact that it exists? Not yet? What are you doing on the Internet?
At first glance, these are strange questions. Nevertheless, today's Internet allows us, of course, if we wish, to fully realize ourselves and find an application for our abilities.
Someone finds information on the Internet. Someone makes money on the Internet: they receive income from the site, do design, work as a copywriter, participate and earn in affiliate programs. Truly, the possibilities of the Internet for making money are endless.
And someone, today, will find out about another idea for a home business and will take it into service. And, who knows, after a while, he organizes a workshop for the repair of suitcases and travel bags in his city.
Yes, just this, not new, but fresh idea for someone: my own workshop for repairing suitcases, I want to offer you. But I am sure that tomorrow you will not run headlong to repair your suitcases. Any business, even home and small, must start with a business plan.
So let's try to understand and understand how the repair of travel suitcases and bags can become your home business.
The first, unconditional, requirement is your desire to establish your own home business. For what? Naturally, in order for a suitcase repair shop to bring you a decent income, and not "one-time pennies-drops".
Naturally, you must have at least two hands that can do something.Indeed, at the first stage, you will have to do the repair of suitcases with your own hands. And maybe on the second, since the expansion of the state should not be included in your plans until the business is "on its feet."
Business plan. This is a prerequisite for opening any business. Given that you are not going to become a competitor, for example, the American Tourister brand, the business plan should contain traditional points. Namely:
These are the main points of your business plan for starting a luggage and bag repair shop. Yes! And don't forget to create your own website. At the very least, creating a business card website.
After all, more and more people use the Internet as a means of obtaining information about services. Including about the service: repair of suitcases and travel bags.
Any workshop, including a workshop for the repair of suitcases and travel bags, implies, in addition to a master, and equipment for repair. It is important here not to rush, and not to immediately purchase a sewing machine for leather and a device for removing and installing rivets and a professional stapler. Why?
The fact is that, for example, the repair of travel bags, according to statistics, is less in demand than the repair of travel suitcases. Most often, handles in a leather travel bag fail, then the locks. A fallen off plastic or metal nameplate is not considered a breakdown at all. And the owners of travel bags, first of all, try to repair the handles with their own hands.
Therefore, we focus on the repair of suitcases. The main problems of modern suitcases are: failure of plastic wheels, breakage of locks and plastic or leather pull-out handles.
Accordingly, the next name, after the equipment in the form of a rivet device, will be fittings for the repair of suitcases: for the repair of suitcases on wheels, these are high-quality wheels, instead of the standard ones, repair of a retractable suitcase handle will require: knowledge of the design and availability of spare parts.
But, there is no need to rush to buy accessories for the repair of suitcases and bags. You have to know where to get it so that you can use it later as orders for repairing suitcases come in.
List of typical malfunctions of modern travel suitcases:
- repair of the retractable handle of the suitcase;
- repair of cups of the retractable system;
- repair or replacement of wheels;
- replacement of locks;
- repair of a plastic case.
So, initially, based on this list, you should purchase equipment and accessories for the repair of travel suitcases.
And, it does not matter at all whether it will be a repair of samsonite, delsey or another brand suitcases. The principle of the design of the suitcase is the same.
To repair the plastic case of a suitcase (cracks, even holes), a repair kit is quite applicable, which is used to repair plastic car parts: fiberglass, epoxy resins.
To give a repaired suitcase a pristine-beautiful look after the body has been repaired, a variety of vinyl films are quite applicable, which are used for wrapping cars.
As a companion line of home luggage repair business, there may be: travel luggage rental. The basis for it is, in principle, simple to create. You buy up out of order suitcases, repair them and rent them out. During the hot summer season. I think there will be those willing. After all, it is not always possible to "carve out" $ 200-300 from the family budget to buy a travel suitcase.
I sincerely hope you find the material of this Home Business Idea: Suitcase and Travel Bag Repair Shop useful. Good luck to you.

became much quieter on bumps, the wheels damp incomparably better, which means the load on the chassis has decreased. There is no need to be afraid of wear - the wheels from the rollers run for a very long time in this mode.
By a happy coincidence, we got an old suitcase from 1980. The appearance and fabric of chiffon has worn out and soaked in dirt over the years. It was decided to completely restore it. Initially, the idea was to put it in a prominent place as a decoration. Major work has been done. Let's rather see a detailed master class - the restoration of a suitcase.
- Suitcase
- Chiffon fabric (We recommend that you buy chiffon fabric at a good price in the online store)
- Foam rubber
- Newspaper sheets
- Furniture glue and PVA glue
- Furniture stapler
- Scissors
- Leg-split
- Acrylic paints
- Pictures for applying decoupage technique
- Brushes
- Acrylic lacquer
- and other small tools
Here is such a suitcase fell into our hands. The photo may show the presence of our cat. The pussy's curiosity is off scale, so it was not always possible to remove it from the frame.
Suitcase restoration begins!
The suitcase inside has become soaked in dust and dirt over the years, so it was decided to completely remove the trim and replace it with new material.
Let's start the fun! Removing old material and full dismantling of the suitcase!
After removing all the excess, we got a kind of cardboard box. There was more than enough dirt and dust! Therefore, we washed it with a damp soapy cloth. The main thing is not to soak the cardboard.
Let's leave the suitcase, let's go to the upholstery! These frame frames are made from untreated wood, so everything was in sharp chips. To prevent damage to the material, it was decided to glue the frame with a newspaper. We leave to dry!
This will be our inside of the suitcase. Here we just cut out the foam rubber of the required size (we calculated it based on the inside of the frame) and covered it with fabric. The staples were attached to the frame.
To strengthen the upper part, cardboard sheets were glued to PVA glue. After drying, the lid became unbendable.
This is a blank for the side walls of the suitcase.
In order to neatly secure the fabric and strengthen the base, we decided to fasten cardboard to the frame.
We fixed the cardboard with tape. On the inside we glue foam rubber on furniture glue. This commit will be sufficient. After that, we wrap the workpiece with a cloth, attach it to a furniture stapler and carefully close the corners. For reliability, we glued each bracket with furniture glue.
By analogy, we made the bottom of the suitcase. Cut out cardboard, foam rubber and covered with fabric. Fastening with staples and adhesives.
All old Soviet glue must be removed before applying acrylic paint. We didn't have the primer at hand, so we applied paint over the fiberboard.By the way, acrylic paints are quite expensive. And it would take a lot of jars to paint our suitcase. Therefore, we decided to replace art paint with construction paint. The cost of a 500 g can cost us 80 rubles. The main thing is to take water-based paint. It is sold only in white, but you can purchase a dye of absolutely any color for them. Such a dye costs 30 rubles. During the work, we realized that the primer is applied so that the fiberboard does not absorb too much paint. So the primer is necessary for those who want to save on paint consumption.
We applied 2 coats of acrylic paint with intermediate drying of each coat. The paint dries very quickly. Then we used the decoupage technique through a file. Instead of napkins for decoupage, we used ordinary office paper. Scotch tape helped us to thin the layers. Here's a quick guide to the technique.
- We print the necessary picture on the printer
- We put it on the table, picture down
- Glue adhesive tape on top
- And gently tear off together with an extra layer of paper
- Thinning the paper to the maximum. The main thing is that holes do not appear.
- Cut out the picture
You can see an example of this technique in the photo in our previous post Champagne bottle decor
- We put the resulting drawing on the file with the picture down
- Pour water on top, spreading over the entire surface of the image.
- Drain off excess water
- We transfer the drawing to the suitcase, carefully removing the file. See that there are no bubbles
- Top from the center of the image, coat the drawing with a solution of PVA glue and water in a ratio of 1: 1
- Let the glue dry
After that, we covered our suitcase with another coat of acrylic paint. We wanted to achieve the effect of an old suitcase without flashy images. Therefore, we also slightly painted over the picture with paint. In order not to cover the image, they diluted part of the paint with a small amount of water and applied it only to the drawings. We are waiting for drying.
The next layer is chameleon gold art acrylic paint. The beauty of this paint is that it is almost transparent, but at different viewing angles it gives a different shade of gold and a glossy sheen. We are waiting for drying.
This is our suitcase from the inside. Restoring a suitcase doesn't seem so difficult anymore ?!
Close the handle and corners. For this we used a regular twine. Everything is very simple here. We coat the handle with PVA glue and wind the twine. Knitting needles were needed to create the corners. We collect 12 loops. In each row we close 1 loop and bring them to 1 loop. We should get a triangle. We fix it with PVA glue.
Visually, it seems that the drawing was applied by hand ... but ... no. Initially, it was another decoupage drawing. But when covering the image with a layer of paint, we overdid it a bit and completely covered the whole drawing. The lines were barely visible to the eye. So the decision was made to add more dye and outline the image by hand. After drying, they covered the drawing with chameleon paint, it gave a rich golden color. A small "signature" was put in the left corner.
At first glance, one might think that craquelure paint was applied to the sides of the suitcase to create mother-in-law ... but ... no. We could not remove the Soviet glue from the side parts of the suitcase. We decided to paint over it. But almost immediately after application, the paint went into a crackle. To preserve this effect, we immediately covered the acrylic paint with gold paint and varnish.
At the end of the work, we completely cover our suitcase with aclyl varnish. By the way, we recommend that you paint over the twine (handle and corners) well. After varnishing, they will take on a stone shape that will give extra shine.
The handle of a suitcase is one of the main components, without which it is simply impossible to operate a suitcase. A broken pen casts doubt on the journey, in the article we will tell you how it is possible to make repairs on your own.
First, let's analyze what happened. If one end of the suitcase handle comes off, and the other is still holding, we are lucky, the task is greatly simplified. The most reliable repair method is to secure the handle with a bolt. As a rule, through holes remain from standard fasteners - this is only on hand. On the back of the suitcase, push the bolt, pull the end of the handle through it, fix it with a nut (tightening it tightly). For a more aesthetic appearance, the nut can be closed with a suitable rivet.
If the telescopic handle breaks down:
The most common breakage of a telescopic handle is a fracture. For repairs, you will need to pick up a handle of the same size and width, a metal tube or plate (a thin corner, aluminum tubes will do). As a rule, telescopic handles are empty inside, so the best and most reliable repair method is to install inside a sturdy metal structure. We install a pre-prepared tube inside the broken handle, we advise you to choose a tube slightly smaller than the size of the handle in size, this will help to carefully install it inside. So that the place of the break does not stand out - carefully wrap it up with transparent tape or duct tape of a suitable color.
In the case when the handle breaks in several places and shatters into small pieces, you no longer have to think about aesthetics. We also need a metal tube, using tape or electrical tape, we attach it to the remaining intact parts. If a breakdown happened on the road, the role of a tube can be played by the body of a pen, a pencil, anything that fits in shape and provides the necessary rigidity.
Telescopic handle is stuck
Breakage is not common, but attempts to pry the handle usually lead to complete breakdown. In order to pull out the jammed handle of the suitcase, you must do the following:
- On the reverse side, feel the frame of the telescopic handle
- At the very bottom, open the protective upholstery and get close to the mechanism that fixes the handles.
- There are two springs, in order to release the handle, you must press them at the same time.
- For convenience, use a flat-blade screwdriver.
- Be careful when you press on the springs the handle will “shoot”.

The described measures are suitable if a breakdown took you by surprise on the road. It is preferable to contact a workshop for repair, where professionals in their field will help you choose an identical pen, similar in its parameters to the original. The repair carried out by the master is covered by a guarantee, and the aesthetic appearance of the suitcase will not be affected.
