The hoops need to be tightened up a bit so they don't fall off. Next, you need to pour hot water into the container. After the liquid has cooled, it must be drained. If after that the oak barrel still flows, the operation must be repeated. With each new iteration, the leak will get smaller.

Old kegs may have other defects. If the container has been used repeatedly for a long time, it can be refreshed. Below, we will tell you how to restore a wooden barrel. This procedure is also quite simple. Now that you know what to do if a wooden barrel is leaking, this task should be easy enough.

Note that wooden vessels are soaked to a very shallow depth with the drinks stored in them. It is approximately 1–2 mm. In order to renew the vessel, it is necessary to remove the inner layer soaked in alcohol. Note that this will not improve the properties of the old keg, but it can still be used for several years.

How to repair an oak barrel with your own hands? To do this, you will need:

  • two hammers weighing 0.5 kg and 1 kg;
  • coarse sandpaper;
  • simple pencil;
  • a piece of chalk;
  • oak chips, sawdust.

To start repairing wooden barrels, you need to wait until they dry. Then you need to knock out one bottom. To do this, you need to use a heavy hammer. And we use a smaller hammer as a heel. We put the container vertically, and knock down the lower bunch and neck hoops. In this case, the upper head hoop must be seated as tightly as possible. After that, turn over the keg and knock up the head hoop.

Do-it-yourself repair of an oak barrel must be done as carefully as possible. Complete collapse of the container must not be allowed. After you have removed one bottom, you need to clean the inner walls of the vessel using sandpaper. If in the future it is planned to store strong alcohol in the container, it is necessary to fire the wood. To do this, you need to light a fire inside the vessel using oak chips and sawdust. Make sure that the fire does not burn much. Keep a water spray on hand to prevent this from happening. Remove the remaining ash as soon as the oak barrel has cooled.The renovation is almost complete. It remains to clean the surface of the vessel and reassemble the container.

In our store we have been selling oak barrels for aging drinks for a long time. Of course, aging in a barrel is associated with much more trouble than, for example, aging a distillate on oak chips, but the process of steeping in a barrel is much more effective, and the result is noticeably different.

Oak dishes are quite capricious about storage conditions: the room temperature and humidity are important, which affect the tightness. It is also important that the keg contains at least a small amount of liquid to maintain the moisture inside. When stored for a long time in a dry room and without contents, the rivets dry out, the hoops fall off and the barrel takes on an appearance that greatly frightens the inexperienced distiller.

To find out whether it is possible to use such a product further, we took a ten-liter barrel, which had been in our warehouse for 3 years. This is a very long time, during this time gaps have appeared between the wooden rivets, the hoops are moving, such a barrel cannot be used immediately.

We will keep everyone informed about what we are doing with this barrel and what happens as a result.

This is what the keg looked like at the beginning.

In order for the rivets to completely regain their shape, the keg was placed in a bucket of hot water, pressing it on top. In this case, it is necessary that the inside of the barrel is also filled with water. At this stage, you do not need to insert the tap into the barrel, and it is simply forbidden to insert the plug! A swollen tree will prevent the plug from being pulled back.
