In detail: DIY repair of cast disks from a real master for the site my.housecope.com.
Alloy wheels are very popular among motorists. But along with the advantages of casting, they have one significant drawback. Heavy impacts damage the discs, creating a hazard on the road. Repairing alloy wheels can eliminate some faults and extend their life.
We have already written about the differences between stamped and alloy wheels, as well as about painting alloy wheels with your own hands. This article will be a good addition to the previous ones.
All light alloy wheels are divided into two main groups.
Alloy wheels - these are light-alloy wheels that are made by hot casting, when molten metal is poured into casting molds. Therefore, alloy wheels are quite fragile and do not have the required elasticity. During impacts and collisions, impressive cracks and chips are formed on them, the geometry is broken and beating appears.
Forged wheels done differently. The light alloy billet is heated and stamped. As a result of metal drawing, the structure of the product is fibrous, which significantly increases the strength and reliability of the forged disc. Such wheels are less likely to crack and deform.
Car enthusiasts should be aware that it is not safe to use “problem” alloy wheels. Most faults are now being repaired successfully. Depending on the nature of the damage to the light-alloy wheel, an appropriate repair technology is selected.
The main types of damage to alloy wheels are:
cracks,
radial displacement,
axial displacement,
chips,
violation of paintwork.
Video (click to play).
In what traffic situations do these problems appear?
Cracks on the casting surface are most often caused by a strong impact when hitting a deep hole or pothole in the road. Discs suffer especially badly when using low-profile rubber.
Radial runout (displacement) is formed when the wheel hits a high curb, as well as when it hits a pit. In this case, a dent appears on the disc. This trouble most often happens with "casting".
With axial runout, a "figure eight" appears, which is the result of a side impact of the alloy disk on the curb. Similar damage occurs in the event of a side collision with another vehicle.
Chips and damage to the protective coating will not immediately destroy the alloy wheel. The effect of aggressive salt will manifest itself in a couple of years, but then it will be too late to repair the disc.
Before contacting a specialized workshop that repairs alloy wheels, a motorist needs to know what problems for casting become fatal. Not all car service workers will honestly and directly refuse to work in case of serious breakdowns. Some will take advantage of the owner's naivety to profit. Therefore, in the absence of a reliable wizard, you should independently assess the condition of the disk.
Even the most experienced craftsmen, equipped with the latest equipment and devices, will not undertake the repair of the following damage:
wide and long cracks,
cracks in the hub area,
severe violation of geometric parameters,
large chips.
To solve problems associated with the repair of alloy wheels, the help of qualified specialists is required. You can only fix the protective coating with your own hands. Often, high-quality casting repair requires expensive equipment and tools, as well as the knowledge and skills of personnel.
Thanks to modern restoration technologies, many damage to alloy wheels can be successfully repaired.The professionalism of service station workers and the availability of high-tech equipment will become important components of the complete restoration of the casting performance.

Hello dear readers and blog visitors Avtoguid.ru Today in the article you can find out how to repair alloy wheels with your own hands without using the services of automotive repair centers.
If you wish and have free time, all work on the restoration of alloy wheels can be done on your own without outside help. Casting repair is a great opportunity to return them to their original appearance and save money on specialist services.
It must be remembered that it is not the gods who burn the pots and some work on the repair of the car or its individual units can be done independently. The main thing is to be patient and not rush. Alloy wheels are popular with most of the drivers.
Unlike stamped discs, they are reliable, durable and practical. The use of molding makes it possible to increase the attractiveness of the car's appearance.
Initially, without exception, all the wheels of the cars were equipped with stamped disks, the reliability of which raised doubts. They had a low level of quality and could not be used for a significant period of time.
Die-cast car wheels were replaced by alloy wheels, which caused an unprecedented excitement among drivers. Die-cast cars sold out like hotcakes in a hungry year. This is especially true of used, well-worn machines. Even the cost of cars with alloy wheels was higher than similar cars with stamping.
The modern cast wheel is produced using the hot casting method. Metal raw materials are melted at high temperatures to a liquid state and poured into special molds. Undoubtedly, their reliability is higher than that of stamped metal discs, but there are peculiarities of use and operation.
Due to the production technology, alloy wheels have one weak side. With sufficiently strong impacts and collisions, their surface is deformed and its integrity is violated. Damage leads to a violation of the geometry of the disc and the appearance of a characteristic runout, giving off to the steering wheel when the car is moving.
Modern machines are equipped with an improved version of forged wheel casting, the production technology of which has undergone improvements. This was done specifically to improve the reliability and durability of the material. When creating a forged disc, the prepared light-alloy material is slightly heated to increase the plasticity of the base and is stamped.
The structure of the material becomes fibrous, which contributes to a significant increase in its strength and reliability. Forged wheels are resistant to various kinds of damage and can be used for a considerable period of time.
Every motorist should remember that the use of a deformed alloy wheel reduces the safety of driving a vehicle several times. It can be the weak link and thus provoke an accident. Periodically, it is necessary to inspect the surface of the alloy wheels, and if damage is found, take immediate measures to eliminate them.
damage to paintwork;
chips and scratches;
axial displacement;
cracks;
radial displacement;
violation of the integrity of the disk.
Repair of alloy wheels must be carried out depending on the season. If they are installed on summer tires, then the restoration is carried out in winter. When winter rubber molding is used, the repair time for alloy wheels comes in the summer. In principle, everything is clear and understandable.
It must be remembered that all damage to alloy wheels associated with a violation of their geometry or significant deformations can only be performed using special equipment.It is simply impossible to do without the help of competent and qualified specialists.
Other types of damage: chips, scratches and just a violation of the integrity of the surface of the disc can be done independently without assistance. In this case, the use of special equipment and expensive materials is not required.
1. Alloy wheels are freed from rubber and carefully inspected for damage. To simplify the search for defects, the outer and inner sides of the disc must be cleaned of dirt.
2. If cracks are found on the surface of the cast disc, further repair work becomes impossible. Argon welding is used to eliminate cracks. If the disc is with an aluminum or magnesium alloy, special electrodes are used to repair cracks. After eliminating the cracks, you can proceed to the next stage.
3. The place of welding and repair of cracks must be sanded to eliminate the weld.
4. The geometry of the alloy wheel is checked using special equipment. You need to seek help from specialists who will perform diagnostics quickly and for a small amount of money. If it is not violated, the task is noticeably simplified and you can proceed to the next stage.
5. Using emery paper or a grinder, it is necessary to remove all irregularities and roughness on the surface of the disc in places of damage.
6.Epoxy two-component paste, matched to the color of the wheel, is applied evenly over the entire prepared surface of the cast wheel (can be purchased at almost any store selling auto chemistry). It is best to use a special automotive spatula to apply it.
7. A hair dryer can be used to speed up the drying of the epoxy layer.
8. The surface of the cast wheel, treated with epoxy paste, should be sanded using fine-grit sandpaper.
VIDEO At this point, the main stage of repairing chips, scratches and just minor damage to the alloy wheel is over. You can proceed to painting the surface of the alloy wheels.
After the repair of cast disks with your own hands in its main phase is over, you can proceed to the finishing part of the work on restoring the surface of the disk. It is no less important and responsible than the previous types of work. Careless actions can ruin the appearance of the disc, and all efforts will go to waste.
Painting alloy wheels will not only emphasize the individuality of the machine, but also provide effective protection against external adverse factors.
A special automotive primer is used to protect the material from the occurrence of corrosive destructive processes. It should be applied in two or three layers, depending on the degree and depth of damage. Wait until the previous one is dry before applying each primer coat. You can use a hair dryer to speed up the drying process.
The prepared surface of the cast disc can be painted. A spray can or spray gun is used. If it is not possible to rent a spray gun, paint cans should be used. The quality of work in this case will be lower than when using the equipment.
For high-quality painting of a cast wheel, it is enough to apply two coats. After applying the first layer of paint, wait until it dries completely. Once the paint is completely dry, the alloy wheels can be reused.
Do not forget that you need to work with paint in a respirator, goggles and rubber gloves. Otherwise, damage to the organs of vision and respiration may result from careless handling of materials. On this, the repair of the car's alloy wheels can be considered completely finished.
There are a large number of reasons causing damage to the surface of an alloy wheel, and they do not always depend on the driving style or the quality of the road surface.
Currently, the following main points can be distinguished regarding the violation of the integrity of the surface of alloy wheels:
Formed when a cast disc hits a deep hole on the road surface at an impressive speed. First of all, discs on low-profile tires suffer. They are the ones who take the brunt.
The radial displacement of the cast disc is reflected by the beating of the steering wheel. A common cause of damage is inattention of the driver and hitting a road stone (curb). This leads to the appearance of a dent on its surface.
When moving, the cast disk writes out "eights". Damage can be caused by a side impact on a curb or by colliding with another vehicle.
Small pebbles, crushed stone and gravel leave their marks on the surface of the cast disc. Of course, they do not deeply destroy the disc, but spoil its appearance.
Do not be afraid to repair alloy wheels with your own hands. There is nothing terrible and difficult in this. The most important thing is to prepare and focus on the quality of work, not speed.
Every car owner at least once in his life faced the need to buy rims. Such a need may arise with a breakdown, the desire to change the design of your car, or with the need to replace a set of rubber. In this case, one question always arises: why are alloy wheels so good, and how they can be repaired if necessary.
The appearance of alloy wheels is an order of magnitude better than that of competitors.
Today in the car market you can find a huge number of types of products. It is worth noting that the durability, reliability and other properties of the discs depend primarily on the material from which they were made. One name - alloy wheels, can say a lot about this product.
If money allows, then it is recommended to buy alloy wheels. The manufacturing technology of this remarkable product is as follows: an easily smooth material is poured into the finished form using the classical casting method. Thanks to this manufacturing technology, the border between the disc and the rim is practically absent - this fact significantly increases the durability and reliability of cast wheels.
Surprisingly, such wheels are rarely damaged, since the limit of their deformation is located much higher than that of other types of wheels. It will take at least five direct hits to the wheel for it to be damaged, but you must admit that, as a rule, no one has experienced such a situation.

If you are curious to know what is the advantage of such wheels, pay attention to these points:
Small mass.
Suspension durability.
With such discs, the ride becomes very comfortable, and the ride of the car is smooth.
Profitability.
Alloy wheels do not corrode.
The advantage of such wheels can also be called manufacturing accuracy. This, by the way, is very important, since the quality of driving a car directly depends on this indicator.
Unforeseen situations on the roads can arise for any motorist, which does not depend on the type of wheels.
Cast wheels, like others, can deteriorate. First of all, this is due to bad roads or, for example, an unscheduled arrival on the curb. In this case, you will have to repair alloy wheels with your own hands or with the help of the company's service station. This is the only way to return the original appearance to the discs,
Here are the most common defects in alloy wheels: dent, rim chipping, rim break.
Currently, you can fix alloy wheels in several options at once, which we will describe in turn.
Welding is considered the most common repair option. With this technology, an experienced worker can remove many external problems. Usually, such repairs are not enough for too long, and after two to three months of intensive driving, the driver may again feel some discomfort while driving.Also, the manufacturer does not recommend heat treatment - often after such a procedure, the disc loses its shape, as well as geometry, which can subsequently affect the ride.
Repair of disks must necessarily end with painting. If indelible stains are identified, the disc can only be restored to its original appearance by painting. The painting procedure itself can be done independently in your own garage. This requires only a few cans of paint, masking tape, degreaser and gloves. First, the discs are removed from the machine, cleaned well and wiped dry. Then the paint is distributed in several layers around the entire perimeter.
If the discs were previously painted, then first you need to remove the previous layer with a special solution.
Apply the compound with a brush to the entire surface of the disc and leave for twenty minutes, after which the paint should begin to swell. Now the old layer will be very easy to remove with a thin spatula.
After removing the first coat of paint, a practically blank disc appears in front of you. If the discs are with rubber, then it is necessary to glue them around the entire perimeter with tape. Attention! Do not forget to degrease the surface before direct painting, at home this can be done with ordinary alcohol.
The most important point is coloring, which is divided into points:
Primer. It is applied by spraying, it can be applied either in two or three layers, but not oily. After the first application, you must wait fifteen minutes. I would like to note that in order for you to like the result, after the last application, you need to wait a few hours.
Painting. The paint must be applied in several layers and wait fifteen minutes for the layer to harden.
Varnish. After the paint has completely dried, a finishing layer of varnish is applied, it is different for each manufacturer, so you may need two layers of varnish.
That's the whole little instruction. Ultimately, painting with a disc, and all three layers, will take approximately 1,000 to 1,200 rubles. But if you decide to contact a service station to repair alloy wheels, the price will fabulously surprise you - from 10,000 to 12,000 thousand rubles, depending on the area of residence.

Repair work in relation to alloy wheels at home is possible, you do not need any special skills, you just need to watch a detailed video of painting wheels and follow our instructions clearly. The only thing that cannot be done in this case is self-heat treatment, it is very dangerous at home and can lead to irreparable damage. To protect yourself, your family and your car, it is recommended not to skimp on buying new wheels. But if the discs have only small chips, you can eliminate these minor defects yourself or come to the service station for repairs.
Reading advertisements or advertisements for the sale of cars: color, leather interior, all options, etc., you have never thought about one feature. Namely, why are rims either not mentioned at all, or mentioned at the end, casually alloy wheels or castings? No, but in vain.
Wheels deserve more attention, and not the generally accepted attitude, according to the principle: "go, and go." Why? Because the condition of a car's rims affects many aspects of the condition of car systems, cost savings and traffic safety.
As an integral part of the chassis and suspension of a car, defective rims affect the following parameters:
Serviceability of suspension elements. Radial or axial displacement of the damaged disc leads to failure of: steering mechanism, shock absorbers, suspension elements.
Savings and safety. A defective wheel rim is a failure of the tire, which means the cost of replacing it, an increase in fuel consumption and a decrease in safety while driving.

The condition of domestic roads makes us increasingly pay attention to such an event as the repair of car rims. Repair of car rims, depending on their type, can be divided into two types: repair and restoration. Moreover, the second type of repair is more related to the restoration of alloy wheels.
Repair of stamped and steel discs we often produce ourselves with a sledgehammer. But, the outward appearance of a repaired dent is very, very deceiving. A simple recommendation for the repair of standard wheel disks, which are steel and stamped ones, is that in case of a dent in the disk, you need to contact a tire fitting. On the equipment, you will be able to roll the disc or roll out the disc.
With regard to alloy wheels - everything is a little more serious. Experts do not recommend repairing light-alloy wheels by rolling. The structure of the metal is broken and the cast wheel loses its quality.
Repair of alloy wheels - the matter is more serious due to the peculiarities of the disc material. You should know that a real master will never undertake the repair of alloy wheels, as a rule, in two cases: if there is a crack at the base of the spokes or a crack near the bore holes. He will not take it, even if he is a "magician and sorcerer of argon welding."
Do-it-yourself wheel rim repair is a doable event. But, on one condition: if the damage to the disk does not concern its parameters. As a rule, do-it-yourself repair and painting of disks is carried out in the case of small cracks on standard disks, which can be welded by conventional welding. This is the so-called disc restoration.
The restoration of cast disks can be done by hand if you own argon welding. If not, then the way out is service.

As usual, wheel repair and painting are complementary concepts. According to the technology, repair and painting of alloy wheels practically does not differ from painting of ordinary stamped wheels. In addition to the external aesthetics, the disc painting is also protective. Steel rims are in great need of corrosion protection and, accordingly, painting provides such protection.
Modern auto chemistry makes it possible to paint steel discs in such a way that, in terms of aesthetic perception, they will look much more attractive than casting. The main thing is to observe the technology of painting discs.
By and large, the technology of painting cast and steel wheels is no different from the technology of painting the body or painting the plastic parts of a car. All operations are required.
Preparing the disc for painting: if possible, the disc should be sandblasted. If not, carry out the cleaning with sandpaper, a metal brush or an electric drill or grinder with a special attachment (in this case, observing safety measures as much as possible).
Degrease the disc surface with mineral spirits. It is advisable to wet the floors in the garage so that dust during painting does not sit on the disc.
Primer. Both priming and painting of the disc can be carried out both from an aerosol can and using a paint "pistol". Naturally, the quality of painting with a spray gun is much higher. The primer is carried out 2-3 times with breaks after a layer of five minutes. Then we leave the discs alone for 24 hours. The primer must dry.
The painting of the discs is the same as for the primer. An hour or two after applying the last layer of paint, apply a protective coating with an auto varnish. Also in two or three layers.
If there is such an opportunity, then the rims after painting should stand for 7-8 days. During this time, the auto varnish will gain its strength in full.
Good luck with your wheel rims repair and painting.

The types of damage to alloy wheels that can be repaired with your own hands are damage to the paintwork and small scratches. They spoil only the appearance of the disc and do not cause imbalance or beating.If at least 30% of the disk is damaged, then partial recovery is not performed - the damaged disk is simply replaced with a new one. Thus, before you independently undertake the repair and painting of an alloy wheel, you need to diagnose it in a car service.
In cases of cracks or chips on the paintwork, resulting from poor-quality painting or unsuccessful parking, restoration of the coating of alloy wheels will help.
If there are only roughness and small scratches on the coating, then polishing is used to eliminate them. If the coating is chipped in some area, then there you first need to restore the coating, and only then polish. Restoration of the coating can be done by filling the chip with epoxy paste, or by applying new paint to it, sometimes it is rubbed with a special putty.
Let's look at how to get rid of the chip using epoxy paste.
Tools and tools for work:
Two-component epoxy paste (preferably one coated color or white);
Primer;
Abrasive strips P280 to P600;
Degreasing liquid;
Dye;
Varnish;
Masking tape to adhere the protective film (if you do not remove the wheel).

Sand the chip with a P280 strip in order to level the surface;
Finish leveling with P400 sandpaper;
Use adhesive tape to fix the film on rubber and plastic parts;
Prepare epoxy paste according to the instructions on it;
Fill a chip or scratch with the paste using a rubber spatula;
After 20 minutes, the paste will begin to dry out, before that you need to remove the excess and smooth the surface;
Leave the paste to dry overnight. And you can dry the place of application under an infrared lamp - then, until it dries completely, it will take up to 4 hours;
Prepare the dried surface for painting: sand with P600 sandpaper (or even finer), then degrease and dry with a napkin.

For painting, you need to take a brush, spray gun and spray paint from a distance of 25 cm. Alternatively, a can is suitable. Use a brush to apply paint to difficult-to-pass areas.
Apply 1st coat of enamel and let it dry for 30 minutes. Then apply the 2nd layer of enamel and also give it the same time to dry. If the paint is flat, then you can apply varnish, if not, apply a third layer of enamel.
Sometimes, in order to level the surface of a cast wheel, it is necessary to sand the entire wheel. Then the wheel has to be removed, the entire surface of the cast disc has to be processed, and then the painting is done with a transition. The enamel for painting must match the color of the previous painting.
Disk repair tools and tools:
A special brush or drill nozzle for removing paintwork (it takes a very long time to do this manually);
Abrasive strips P280 to P600;
Primer with hardener;
Degreasing liquid;
Dye;
Polishing paste of 2 types: containing abrasives and not containing;
Varnish;

Remove the wheel, rubber from the wheel;
Rinse and clean the disc from old paint and rust. First, with a knife or spatula, you should remove all peeled areas of paint, and then start working with a drill;
If you removed the old paintwork with an iron brush, and the surface is not smooth, then you need to sand the surface with P280 sandpaper;
If the paintwork was removed with a drill, and the surface is sufficiently smooth, then you can prepare it for priming by sanding it with P400 sandpaper or even finer; if there are visible scratches, then they must be removed with coarse sandpaper;
Degrease the surface of the cast disc and dry with a napkin;
Prime in 1 or 2 coats;
Sand with P600 or even finer sandpaper, you can also apply wet sanding: moisten the surface of the disc and sandpaper with water, while sanding, so that the sanding process goes more smoothly;
Degrease the surface of the disc.
So, in this article we will talk about repairing disks, or as it is also called “editing disks”, or “rolling disks”. What is it, how effective is it and what is the technological process of such a repair?
All discs are generally divided into two categories: stamped discs , in other words, iron (the most budgetary option offered by the manufacturer) and alloy wheels (made of light-alloy aluminum with the addition of silumin and magnesium in different proportions, depending on the manufacturer's plant).
It is no secret that any discs installed on your car, with some more or less strong impact as a result of irregularities on the road, can deform, i.e. change your geometry.
In the overwhelming majority of cases, bending a disc or discs, you should not frantically run around the shops and look for a new one, especially since one disc is often quite problematic to find, and sometimes it is simply impossible. And buying a set of discs is not the cheapest pleasure. In this case, the deformed disc can simply be repaired.
An example of editing a disc in our tire service:
Installing a disc on a straightening machine
Editing the inner flange of the disc
Disc straightening with a hydraulic press
Correction of radial disc runout
Stamped discs are easily repaired, since the iron alloy from which they are made does not crack as a result of deformations, and the damaged surface returns to its original place quite simply - undoubtedly, with the help of specialized equipment.
In this case, there are two options for repairing such disks:
What is the difference between rolling a disc and dressing a disc?
During rolling, the disc is installed on a special so-called rolling stock, rollers are brought to the disc, which clamp the sides of the disc, and by means of its rotation the rollers restore the bent sides and, in general, the entire geometry of the disc.
Disc rolling video:
VIDEO
As for the dressing of the disc, in this case the disc is also installed on a special slipway for mounting the discs, but the repair takes place not due to the rollers, but due to the force of the hydraulic press, which is usually equal to 5 tons, directed to the place of deformation. If in the first case the process of rolling the disk with rollers is fully automated, then in the second case the process directly depends on the experience of the master performing the repair.
Disc editing video:
VIDEO
Now we analyze the case of repairing an alloy wheel, in other words, “cast”.
For the repair of alloy wheels, only one way is characteristic - it is the dressing of the wheel. That is, repair using the hydraulic press already described above, since the aluminum alloy is much stronger and the rollers will no longer help here. In the same way, the hydraulic press is brought to the disk fixed on the slipway and the disk geometry is restored under the necessary force. If the deformation of the disc is insignificant, then such a repair is made, which is called "cold". If the deformation of the disk is significant, the place of deformation is preliminarily heated to a certain temperature and, then, the straightening takes place directly. There are frequent cases when, after a strong impact of the disc, cracks appear on the disc. In this case, argon-arc welding is used to weld the break. In addition, with severe deformation, microcracks can also appear, which become visible only during the dressing process of the disc. In this case, argon arc welding is also used.
In any case, as I said earlier, the vast majority of disks can be repaired and the disk structure will not become weaker from this.
In this article, we figured out what the technological process of repairing disks is and what is the difference between dressing and rolling a disk.
The situation when an alloy wheel has burst, warped or simply lost its attractiveness is familiar to many motorists. Someone in such a situation decides to completely replace the part with a new one, someone prefers to repair the old one. If you made a decision to carry out repairs, and besides, without contacting professionals, we strongly recommend that you familiarize yourself with the material presented below. It is in it that the repair of cast disks with your own hands and all its possible variations are described in detail.
Alloy wheels are far from the usual "stampings". The attractive appearance of "casting" is unpleasantly overshadowed by its problematic property - fragility. Despite this, such details are not becoming less relevant among motorists. If you belong to a group of "casting" fans, then you should be prepared for the fact that sooner or later something will happen to him. As a rule, due to a strong impact or other physical impact, alloy wheels:
strongly deformed;
burst;
split into some particles;
scratch and lose their beauty.
It is important to eliminate all defects, with the exception of the last one, otherwise such disks cannot be used.
It is worth noting that over time, the auto community got used to repairing "problem casting". However, you need to understand - not every deteriorated disc is returned to repair. In particular, the following defects cannot be repaired:
wide or oblong cracks;
integrity violations in the area of the hub;
severe defect in geometry;
very large chips.
In other cases, it is quite possible to try to reanimate the disk, if you correctly approach this procedure and have some tool. At the moment, it is, of course, possible to repair the "casting" in a garage, but this procedure will be carried out at your own peril and risk. And the point is not that an inexperienced repairman may not have the necessary qualifications, but that he may not have the necessary equipment, which is necessary for competently repairing the disk and giving it the necessary geometry.
In general, the "casting" is repaired in the following order:
The defective disc is thoroughly washed and sanded in problem areas.
Violations in the structure of the part are assessed and the option for their correction is determined: in case of violation of integrity, welding is used, and in case of scratches and similar defects, redecoration is used.
After that, repair activities are carried out directly.
Further, the partially corrected disk is checked on special equipment for geometric parameters and, if necessary, they are corrected (if possible, of course).
At the final stage, the part is brought into the proper form for operation and installed on the vehicle for use.
Again, it is advisable to repair the "casting" at the service station, since it is unrealistic to check the geometry of the disk in a garage, and a part with incorrect geometric indicators can provoke an accident. Do you need it? Probably not.
When the problem with a cast wheel is chips, cracks and other violations of the integrity of the part, welding is used to repair it. In the case of deformation, the restoration of geometry is applied on special equipment, and in case of aesthetic violations - cosmetic repairs. In this paragraph of the article, we will pay special attention to how the repair of cast disks by welding is carried out. In the template version, the event is as follows:
Thoroughly wash the disc and sand it where the integrity of the disc is compromised.
Video (click to play).
Next, you need to prepare the welding machine. It is important to note here that the filling of cracks and chips in the disks is carried out with special argon electrodes. For light-alloy metals, electrodes "AG" are used, and for magnesium "AMG".
After the defects have been eliminated, it is necessary to clean the part from nodules and splashes of the remaining metal.
Then the geometry of the disk is checked, which, even in the absence of special equipment, should not be ignored. You can check the part for the correctness of the geometric parameters if you go to the nearest service station where the appropriate equipment is available. Such a service will either be free, or it will cost a couple of hundred rubles, but no more. If there are violations in the geometry of the part, they are also eliminated using special equipment, which will already cost more.
Summarizing today's material, it will be useful to consider the cosmetic repair of alloy wheels. It is carried out in cases when defects have appeared on the surface of the part, which spoil its appearance. Often, such violations are associated with abrasions, scratches or the presence of the consequences of welding. Regardless of the cause of the problem, the cosmetic repair of the "casting" is carried out as follows:
First, again, thoroughly wash the disc.
In places with aesthetic defects, sand the surface until they disappear or become almost invisible.
Further, it is necessary to thoroughly grind the place of violation and degrease the surface.
After that, it remains only to paint over and varnish the prepared place.
When the paint and varnish are dry, the repaired wheel can be installed on the vehicle and started to operate. Repair for this is over.
In addition to the standard information and painting of defects on disks, motorists often use restyling of such, that is, changes in their appearance. Vinyls, extraordinary paints, films and other types of images that can be applied to a part are excellent for these purposes. Carrying out this kind of tuning, you need to proceed from your preferences and choose what you like specifically, otherwise you will not be able to achieve the desired effect.
On this, perhaps, the story about possible variations in the repair of alloy wheels can be completed. We hope the above material was useful to you. Good luck with the repairs and on the roads!
