During the operation of the door, the handle and the locking mechanism associated with it take the greatest load, so it is not surprising that these elements often break. In most cases, the door handle can be repaired by yourself using a screwdriver and a wrench. Sometimes it is necessary to replace some parts of the mechanism or the entire set as a whole.
When the question arises of how to fix a doorknob, the first step is to familiarize yourself with its device. For those who have come across the installation of a lock on a wooden door, this will not be difficult. Lever and rotary handles consist of the following elements:
If the door handle is found to be broken, you must first determine the cause. The experience of using door handles allows us to distinguish 5 types of breakdowns that are most common:
Now let's look at how to repair a doorknob in each of these cases.
Metal parts of the mechanism under constant use are subject to abrasion, especially if dust particles get there. To avoid this, you need to monitor the presence of grease in the lock. Put a little oil on the bolt and twist the handle so that it is evenly distributed over all parts.
Sometimes the reason lies in loose structural elements. It is necessary to correct their position and tighten the fastening bolts.
The culprit of the breakdown in this case is the retaining ring, which is either deformed, or displaced, and may even burst completely. Repair will take time, but it will not be difficult to do it:
Removing the decorative strip and unscrewing the fastening elements of the handle
This is possible only when using cheap low-quality products that are made of a fragile material - silumin. In this situation, you will have to change the mechanism completely. To avoid such breakdowns, it is better to purchase steel structures from trusted manufacturers. Replacing the handle is as follows:
If the latch does not work when the door is opened, the cause of the malfunction is a too short square. It gradually moves towards the latch and presses it down. As a result, it cannot function normally. In this case, you need to act like this:
If the handle does not spring back to the horizontal position, this does not mean that it has broken - it may just that the return spring has come off. You can put it in place in the same way as the retaining ring.But sometimes the spring bursts, and this already becomes a problem: it is very difficult to acquire this part on the market. Often in such cases, the entire mechanism is changed.
Sometimes it is required to repair the outer door handle made of metal, or rather to replace it, since Chinese fittings made of silumin often break down. This is easier to do than installing a lock on a metal door. The algorithm of actions is not very different from replacing the handle of an interior door:
In most cases, repairing a doorknob is not difficult, the main thing is to correctly determine the cause. If the structure cannot be repaired, you should think about purchasing high-quality fittings from well-known manufacturers. To get a better idea of how to disassemble a doorknob, watch the following video.

Surely each of you has come across a door handle breakage in an apartment. The problem is quite common, and the reason for this may be both the poor-quality assembly of the manufacturer, and the design of the mechanism itself, which tends to fail over time. If you bought the accessories recently and you still have warranty receipts, the store will replace your faulty device with a new one. And in case of a breakdown of the handle, which has served you faithfully for several years, do not rush to run to the store for a new one. In this article, we will tell you in detail and describe how to repair the handle of an interior door.
The door handle is a device, although it is quite simple in its design, but with constant use, even such devices can fail. Sometimes, in order to make the handle work, you need to make just a couple of manipulations. In other cases, you will need to purchase and install a worn part.
You may not even notice the "symptoms" of a breakdown, or you may not attach any importance to them. However, just by paying attention to such seemingly little things, you can save on buying new expensive accessories or on the services of a master.
To avoid this, let's consider the cases that can lead to further damage to the device:
Door handle stuck. When you try to open the door, the device "resists", you have to resort to the use of force and twitching to achieve the desired result.
Door lock stuck. In this case, the problem lies directly in the very design of the door mechanism. The valve can be both opened and closed with difficulty.
Backlash of door fittings. The device does not fit snugly against the base and wobbles. The mechanism itself can be loose.
The door handle does not turn to the start position. When manipulating the door, the device does not return to its original position, although it should instantly spring back. This problem happens both with the handle separately and in conjunction with the latch mechanism.
The tongue is jammed. When the door is opened, the latch tongue either does not come in, or comes in, but then does not come back.
In order to fix a breakdown, it is necessary to correctly determine its cause.
How to fix an interior door handle? You can take the path of less resistance and call a foreman who will repair your broken device for a small fee. If you like to dig into mechanisms on your own, believe in yourself and are not afraid of difficulties - you can repair the handles of interior doors with your own hands.
To simplify your acquaintance with the mechanism of the device, let's consider what types of handles are on the market:
Swivel. These are one of the most popular devices for door installation inside an apartment. This type of handle is usually round and has a keyhole in the middle. To open the door, it is enough to turn such a device clockwise. If your doorknob opens counterclockwise, it may be incorrectly installed.

Press. Unlike rotary ones, devices of this type are equipped with a lever. To activate the device, it is enough to push the handle down.
Fixed. Models of this type have been used extremely rarely lately. They do not have a locking mechanism and are easy to install. They are either attached to a rod and screwed on both sides, or fixed with screws.

The next step in understanding how to fix an interior doorknob is the design of the appliance.
Let's take a look at the mechanisms that make up the door handle:
Lock. The mechanism inside the unit. The main element of the lock is a latch. It is she who keeps the door closed.
Quadrangular retainer. This mechanism is brought out and connected to the inside, thereby activating it.
Lever. The outside of the device. It is the handle that you pull or turn to open / close the door.
Overlay. It is used as a decorative element and also covers all mechanisms and fastenings.
A reciprocal element. This part is located inside the door handle box. In essence, it is a plate that covers the gap in the frame, where the valve falls.
In order to independently repair the handle of the interior door, try to disassemble your device, familiarize yourself with the mechanism of the mechanism and determine the cause of the failure.
Suppose you are faced with a breakdown of an interior door handle, what should you do? There are many options for repairing the mechanism, each of them is based on what caused the breakdown. But first, let's take a look at the tool we need to remove the doorknob:
Knife. In case you need to pry on the decorative overlays.
Phillips screwdriver. For loosening the bolts holding the handle. Please note that a small screwdriver should be used, otherwise there will be a risk of stripping the threads.
Lubrication. The liquid is needed to process mechanisms.
Perhaps the easiest problem to fix is the sticking of an unlubricated mechanism. In order to fix such a problem, you only need a screwdriver and grease.
Unscrew the hardware item, then lubricate it with a lubricant. It will be enough to drip onto the valve once and turn it a couple of times or press the handle so that the grease is evenly dispersed through the mechanism of the device. In the absence of lubricating fluid, the mechanisms are erased and work incorrectly; dust can aggravate this situation. If there is a lot of dust in your house, then do not expect a breakdown, periodically disassemble the mechanism for cleaning and lubrication. This repair option will also be useful to eliminate the squeak in the mechanism. It will not be superfluous to lubricate the devices that have been purchased for a long time, this will extend their service life, and also become a guarantee that the device will not let you down in the near future.
The next easy way to fix a broken interior door handle is to tighten the hardware bolts. If your door has a gap or the handle itself is not where it should be, just tighten the screws with a Phillips screwdriver.

If none of the previous options suits you, you should determine the cause of the breakdown. To do this, you will have to disassemble the handle of the interior door. The first step is to remove the trim. It is usually located below the handle and hides the screws behind it. Twist the caps a couple of times, after which they will easily come off.Next, unscrew the screws behind the cover plate, and then remove the door handle. So now you see the mechanism inside the device. You do not have to pull it out; to determine the breakdown, it will be enough to look at the device.
The first things you should look at are the spring and key disc. To get a closer look at the disc, you must remove the retaining rings from it. This part is prone to breakage, so we advise you to take a look at it first. In the event of a malfunction or defect, you should contact the nearest plumbing or furniture store and buy from them a spare part similar to the broken one.
If the disc looks intact, move on to the spring. First, it should be said that the spring facilitates the operation of the handle. It is this detail that makes it turn or lower. Also, the spring is responsible for the operation of the sliding tab. If the problem initially consisted in the incorrect operation of these mechanisms, then you should immediately check the spring. If the spring is stretched or deformed, you will have to buy a similar one in the store. But sometimes it happens that the spring just pops out of the saddle. If you have just such a case, you are in luck, you just need to fix the spiral and put it in the saddle, where it should be.
If the above methods do not help, let's move on to "heavy artillery". Remove the plate from the back and take out all devices for a detailed examination. If you find a deformed or broken part, remove it and contact the store to buy an analogue.
The entire mechanism must be assembled in the same order in which you disassembled it. Place the parts one at a time to simplify the process. With this approach, you will not get confused.
If the malfunction turned out to be serious or you cannot determine the cause of the breakdown, it is better to call a specialist or purchase new fittings. This will save your nerves, although it will affect the state of the wallet.

So, in the article we talked in detail about the do-it-yourself repair of interior door handles, and the video presented above will simplify the process. After reading the text, you will not have any problems with fixing the home furnishing element.
If the doorknob stops working, don't rush to the store to have it replaced. In most cases, this lock assembly can be repaired. Let's find out how to fix the front door handle, and you will be convinced that there is nothing complicated about it - you just need to have a screwdriver and a few minutes of free time.
Before we repair the doorknob, let's get acquainted with its mechanism and how it works. Let's say right away that we are talking about a lever handle, since it is it that is usually used on entrance doors.
So, the mechanism has the following details:
Handle - this is exactly the element that we grasp with our hands and press to open the door;
Socket - is a round platform in which the movable mechanism and the handle stopper are located. Also, the socket provides fastening of the entire unit to the door;
Decorative overlay - is a ring or square that is screwed onto a socket;
Travel stop - the name of this part speaks for itself;
Retaining ring - fixes the handle in the socket;
Square - this is a square axis that transmits the rotary movement to the lock and the counter handle.
Note! In some models of handles, instead of a round rosette, there is a long plate-overlay, which also serves as a frame for a mask or a place for attaching the lock handle. But, regardless of the platform, the principle of its mechanism is always the same.
Thus, when we press the lever, the axis rotates, which sets the lock mechanism in motion. As a result, the latch is pulled out of the strike plate, and the door is unlocked.
Typically, people are faced with the following pen malfunctions:
Jamming is a breakdown that is usually not associated with a handle. The reason usually lies in the lock or in the incorrectly configured door. To pinpoint the cause, open the door and press the handle.
If the door does not jam when the door is open, then the latch is stuck in the strike plate.
To fix the problem, you need to do the following:
Tighten the self-tapping screws that secure the striker to the door frame;
Tighten the self-tapping screws that attach the lock itself to the door leaf.
Lubricate the section of the striker plate that comes into contact with the latch with machine oil;
Lubricate the lock latch.
If the reason for the jam is that the door is loose, inspect the perimeter of the door. Pay particular attention to the sealant. Replace it with a new one if necessary;
If the door has adjustable hinges, adjust its position.
Nuance: it is advisable to lubricate the latch only as a last resort, since sooner or later it will surely stain your clothes.
If it turns out that the handle is sticking even when the door is open, i.e. the problem is not in the coincidence of the latch with the striker, most likely the lock mechanism itself is faulty.
In this case, the troubleshooting instructions are as follows:
Lubricate the latch without disassembling the lock with machine oil or WD-40;
Check the functionality of the mechanism. If this action did not bring any results, follow the further recommendations.
Unscrew the decorative trim ring;
Unscrew the screws that hold the socket;
Loosen the locking screw located on the back of the handle that secures the rod;
Remove the plastic cover located inside the socket, if any;
Lubricate the swivel mechanism, pay particular attention to the spring and the space between the handle and the socket;
Check the functionality of the mechanism.
In the same way, you need to lubricate the counter handle, since the cause of the malfunction may lie in it.
Dismantle the lock;
Unscrew the lock cover (side);
Lubricate the latch mechanism.
After completing all these steps, the problem will definitely be fixed.
If the handle stops springing, then there can be only one reason - the return element does not work.
In this case, you need to dismantle the handle according to the described scheme, and then perform the following steps:
Insert a slotted screwdriver into the space between the socket and the stopper;
Pry the stopper with a screwdriver and remove it as shown in the photo.
Insert the spring into the grooves of the handle core;
Secure the spring by placing a travel stop at the top.
A similar repair to the door handle mechanism can be performed if the spring simply flew off the core.
If it has burst, then it is quite difficult to find it on sale, but you can take a different path:
Remove the spring from the broken handle, if any;
Make a spring yourself, for example, from a key ring from a key ring.
Otherwise, you will have to change the handle completely.
A similar situation is possible only if the retaining ring has fallen off the handle core. To solve the problem, you need to dismantle the socket, then insert the handle into it and install the locking ring, as well as other parts, i.e. spring and travel stop.
If the ring bursts, it is not necessary to replace the entire handle. You can choose a suitable counter washer and install it in place of the ring. If necessary, the washer can be tightened with your own hands using pliers so that it tightly squeezes the core.
Note! There are situations when the handle falls out because it simply breaks off the core. This situation can only happen for two reasons - the handle is of poor quality, i.e. made of silumin, or a short rod is used in the door, which did not fully enter the core.If the reason is in a short core, then before installing a new handle, it must be changed to a longer one.
If you press the handle, but the latch does not work, there can be two reasons for the malfunction:
The short rod flew out of the core, as it moved towards the counter handle;
The square milling of the core has “cut off”.
In the first case, you will have to change the square axis to a longer one. Of course, you can temporarily solve the problem by centering the position of the square and fixing it in the handles with locking screws.
Do not forget, however, that this could damage the handle. As we said, the axis must go deep into the core.
As for the second case, the repair of the front door handle made of silumin does not make any sense at all. No matter how you repair it, it will soon break completely and irrevocably.
The only way to temporarily fix the problem is to try to seal the joint, for example, by winding electrical tape around the rod. Another option is to make a cut along the bar and slightly widen it, if initially there is none. You can even insert a small wedge.
But, the result will still not be long. Also, keep in mind that if the rod fits too tightly into the silumin core, the handle may simply split.

Nuance: you can distinguish a silumin handle from a quality product by its suspicious lightness. In addition, an important indicator is the price - a high-quality handle with a mechanism, even a Chinese one, cannot cost less than 900–1000 rubles.
Now you know how to repair a doorknob. To see this again, watch the video in this article. If it turns out that in your case repair is impossible, you can easily install a new mechanism.
Interior doors are sold without fittings, the delivery set includes only the door leaf and posts, from which the door frame is to be assembled. There are no factory-made holes in the canvas for the installation of locks and handles. This is because the handles, being standardized, come in a variety of designs and sizes. In addition, the choice of fittings depends entirely on the preferences of the buyer. Therefore, a person who has started a renovation with the replacement of interior doors is faced with the problem of choosing - to invite a master or install the handles on his own. It should be noted that, having decided to install doors with your own hands, you will definitely cope with the installation of door handles.
Door handles for interior doors can be classified according to installation method, method of operation, shape, material, and the presence of a lock.
According to the installation method, stationary (overhead) and mortise models are distinguished. Overheads are attached to the door leaf, and for mortise it is required to drill holes in it.
By the way they work, door handles are:
With push mechanism. Usually these are elongated models. When you press the handle, the lock tongue comes out of the groove in the "otvetka" and allows the door to open. Therefore, the less rotation is required for this, the more convenient the model is to operate. In the horizontal position of the handle, the door remains securely closed. With swivel mechanism. These are basically ball-shaped knobs (or knobs). These models do not have a lever; the ball must be turned in order for the latch tongue to come out of the groove.
Stationary (the simplest). They do not have a latch; with the help of such models, the door can only be closed or opened by pushing it.
One of the most popular materials for the manufacture of doorknobs is brass. In addition to its excellent aesthetic properties, brass is practical and durable.
As a rule, complex locking systems are not installed on interior doors. The exception is the plumbing lock installed in bathrooms and toilets.
Consider the installation features of the most popular model for interior doors - knob handles.Handles are usually installed on a hinged door, but many experts recommend removing the canvas for installation. True, this can not always be done easily.
The tool will need the most common one, which is in every home:
Screwdriver or drill with a set of drills (including pen drills) and a crown.
Chisel.
Hammer.
Awl.
Square and soft pencil. The soft pencil mark is clearly visible on the veneer.
A marking scheme is attached to the door latch, but it is easy to mark the holes without it. From the bottom edge of the canvas, 1.0 meter is measured on both sides. Measure 6 cm from each edge of the door and make a mark. With the help of a square, a strictly horizontal line is drawn that will connect these two points. At the end of the canvas, a mark with a pencil and an awl is placed on this line in the center. A latch strip is applied and the veneer is cut with a sharp knife. Remember that the strip must be recessed into the door leaf so that it forms a single surface with the door leaf.
Some experts advise starting drilling from the end of the blade with a pen drill. With this order of work, when drilling with a crown, the chips will fly out into the already made hole, and not clog the teeth of the crown.
The drill bit should go to the depth of the blade, no more. The drill is pressed against a point on the end of the blade and a hole is drilled. Then, with the help of a crown, holes are drilled alternately on each side of the canvas, they do not need to be made through. As soon as the tip of the crown appears on the opposite side, the drill must be stopped and start drilling from the other side. So the veneer will not be damaged when the crown comes out.
After the holes are ready, using a chisel and a hammer, we make a selection along the line cut with a knife under the latch bar. Install the latch and tighten with two self-tapping screws. It is better to take self-tapping screws not "regular" ones, which are attached to the latch (they have ordinary soft metal), but high-quality ones.
Using the key included in the kit, we disassemble the handle into two parts so that it can be installed. For this, one fastening screw must be loosened, the other must be unscrewed. The center rod is inserted into the hole and on one side the fixing screw is tightened tightly. Then the second half of the knob is put on the rod, and the second screw is tightened. Self-tapping screws are twisted on both sides, which will cover the decorative overlays and the screws will not be visible.
After installing the knob handle, it remains to install the "return" on the box. The door is closed, but not completely, and the upper and lower edges of the tongue are marked with a pencil. Using a square, the distance from the edge of the leaf to the center of the latch strip is determined, and this dimension is transferred to the door frame. Then a "return" strip is applied to the box, a veneer is cut with a knife, and a chisel is used to cut under the strip and tongue. The door is closed and the operation of the latch is checked.
Then a strap is installed on the box. Special "pockets" are sold for grooves under the tongue, they are made of plastic or metal. The self-tapping screws that fix the "return" bar can be closed with self-adhesive plugs. The installation is then complete.
An installed knob can be disassembled in two ways, depending on its design. Unfortunately, most of these models are of rather low quality and often fail.
Dismantling one structure begins with the fact that you need to carefully pry off and remove the decorative strip. The lining has a special groove, usually it looks down. The ball-shaped handle will interfere with unscrewing the screws, so you need to squeeze the locking pin and, at the same time, with a little effort, remove the handle from the central rod. Once the ball of the handle is removed, it will be very easy to unscrew the screws.
To disassemble the second design, which does not have a locking pin, it is necessary to press the spring pin through the technological hole using the supplied key and remove the handle ball.If the length of the key is not enough (it happens), use a simple nail. Then the decorative strip and self-tapping screws are unscrewed. If you cannot find the spring pin through the technological hole, it means that the knob was assembled incorrectly. Rotate the decorative strip 180 ° and the problem is solved.
The handle is assembled in the reverse order.
As you can see, the installation of a door handle on an interior door is not particularly difficult, a professional tool is not required for work, the number of operations is reduced to three. All that is required of you is accuracy and precision. Yes, and also the desire to install the handle yourself.
