DIY b20b engine repair

In detail: do-it-yourself b20b engine repair from a real master for the site my.housecope.com.

Repair of the HONDA B20 engine, on your own

Here is a cognitive topic.
The guys weren't too lazy to create a motor repair manual.
Repair report for the B20Z engine 1, on a Honda vehicle.
Everything is described there and a lot of photos of how to sort out the engine yourself.

      Honda's B Series was a hit right after its inception. It is characterized by the following design features:

      • steel cylinder liners inside the aluminum block;
      • two-shaft valve timing mechanism DOHC 16V;
      • timing belt drive;
      • valve opening phase control system VTEC.

      Already in the first ICE of this series, the designers removed almost 100 liters. With. from each 1 liter of cylinder volume - 155 liters. With. with a 1.6 liter B16A engine. At the same time, the company's management broke the stereotypes that such power drives can only be produced individually and exclusively for sports cars. The same engine, after installing VTEC, managed to develop a power of 170 liters. with., which at that time was possible only on motorcycles.

      However, the B20B engine, the largest in volume, completing this series, for reasons unknown to users, did not receive the VTEC variable valve timing system for some reason. This can be partially explained by the complete set of motors with automatic transmissions. In addition, the manufacturer left it to the user to increase the power of the two-liter power drive. To do this, it is enough to install the VTEC system from 1.6 or 1.8 liters versions, having received 190 - 220 liters at the output. With.

      The manufacturer Honda used a cylinder bore-to-stroke ratio of 84/89 mm for the 2.0 L engine. The designers used an in-line engine with 4 cylinders, which ensures self-balancing of angular forces and vibrations.

      An important feature of the motor is the absence of VTEC and hydraulic lifters. Different Honda vehicles do not use the same attachments, resulting in varying operating parameters. This is done to reduce the transport tax, which is influenced by the volume of the car's internal combustion engine (ICE) cylinders.

      The manual contains a description of the work with photographs, which makes it possible to force the power drive and overhaul in the garage with your own hands.

      Thanks to the counterbores on the piston ends, the B20B motor does not bend the valve. However, with an increase in the service life when using low-quality gasoline and oil, a layer of carbon deposits forms on the pistons. If its quantity reaches the critical mass and thickness of the layer, when the timing belt breaks, grooves in the ends of the pistons will not save the valves from bending.

      The table below shows the technical characteristics of the B20B:

      combined cycle 10 l / 100 km

      clutch bolt - 19 - 30 Nm

      bearing cover - 68 - 84 Nm (main) and 43 - 53 (connecting rod)

      cylinder head - three stages 22 Nm, 85 Nm + 90 °

      In the absence of hydraulic pushers and a phase regulator, the requirements for oil quality are reduced.

      Initially, the B20B engine has the following design features:

      • cylinders are made of steel liners inside an aluminum block;
      • fit of "wet type" liners improves heat dissipation, but reduces the spatial rigidity of the cylinder block;
      • to improve performance, the cylinder head is equipped with 16 valves;
      • the gas distribution mechanism is a two-shaft type DOHC 16V, is driven by a toothed belt;
      • the pistons have a groove at the ends (counterbore) to prevent collisions with the valves at the time of the timing belt break.

      Thanks to these nuances, major repairs can be performed many times. To increase the torque, it can be upgraded on its own.

      During the entire production period of the motor, the manufacturer Honda used not the same attachments and power drive markings:

      • the geometry of the intake manifold and the exhaust tract is different;
      • until 1999, engine power was limited to 128 hp. with., then this characteristic increased to 147 liters. With.;
      • for the domestic market the marking was B20B, for the external B20Z1.
