If parts for the same Honda Civic are easy to find, both in stores and at "showdowns", then with the "aristocrat" it is more difficult. Usually you have to take the original elements. And when you find out their price, you get the feeling that they are made by the English queen herself. For example, the radiator grille costs $ 230, the windshield costs $ 320, and the front bumper trim costs $ 430! So we highly recommend that owners of Rover 400 have good insurance that can cover all kinds of body repairs. In the event of a failure of the power window (more often the driver's one breaks down), the costs are considerable, since you will have to buy a mechanism assembled with a motor. The price of the branded kit makes you shudder: $ 500! And another $ 50 will need to be paid for the work.

During the operation of the Rover 400 in Russia, some cars have certain problems with electrical equipment. For example, the most common malfunction is a "buggy" standard alarm. The most modest gasoline engine has a volume of 1.4 liters and a power of 103 hp. (Rover 414). The characteristics of this motor are enough for a quiet ride around the city, but if you want to ride with the breeze, then the Rover 414 will greatly upset its owner. Of course, 103 hp. for a volume of 1.4 liters, a very good result, but still this car is from a large class "D". And in this niche, such motors are not held in high esteem. In addition, there is some doubt that an engine with such a high power per liter of volume has a huge motor resource. After all, this motor has to be constantly rotated (the maximum torque of 127 Nm is achieved here only at 5000 rpm).

A 1.6-liter engine was installed on the Rover 416 with a manual transmission, producing 111 hp. (as already mentioned, another 113 hp engine came with the "automatic"). Accordingly, the Rover 416 already has a more decent traction reserve compared to the 414th modification, especially in the zone of low and medium revs (145 Nm are achieved here at 3000 rpm). Next in the hierarchy was the 420 version with a 2.0 liter engine (136 hp). There is a maximum speed under 200 km / h, and acceleration to "hundreds" in less than 10 seconds. Perhaps the only thing that the Rover 420 lacks is an automatic transmission - there is only "mechanics". And for lovers of powerful and comfortable cars, "Rover" offered the coolest modification "425" with an automatic transmission and a 2.5-liter V6 engine with 175 hp. By the way, the same unit is at the top of the model range and in the much more prestigious Rover 75.

The most reliable among all motors is considered to be a Honda engine. With regular maintenance and careful operation, it can withstand more than 400-500 thousand kilometers. Alas, "Rover" motors cannot boast of such vitality. They are also reliable, but they cause problems more often. And both large and small. In particular, many complaints are received about the poor performance of the engine in winter (it does not start or does it with difficulty). Sometimes even regular visits to the service do not help. The latter phenomenon is especially infuriating for owners of Rover 400. From time to time, cars with punched cylinder head gaskets come for repairs. In this case, a complete repair at the Rover service station will cost almost $ 600. Let's face it, a lot. Of course, they will take less on ordinary services, but it must be remembered that in the overwhelming majority of cases the specialists there do not have experience in dealing with Rover cars.

If, due to strong overheating, it "leads" the cylinder head, then you need to prepare for even greater spending: the "head" costs $ 1700-2000! And it's almost impossible to find a used one. So when operating the Rover 400, you need to remember about the timely replacement of the fluid in the cooling system, regularly clean the radiator, and so on.

It is worth paying more attention to the recommendations of the masters about changing the oil every 10-12 thousand km (the plant advises to do this after 15 thousand km). If you forget about regular maintenance, you can finish badly before the knock of hydraulic lifters. A set of 16 pieces costs $ 480 (for a V6 engine - $ 700), plus the cost of work, the need to buy new gaskets, etc. (another $ 150-300). Hence, it is very risky to buy a used Rover 400 in "rolled" condition with high mileage. Due to the lack of used or high-quality non-original parts on the market, you can "get" for decent money. And besides, not everywhere will undertake the repair of English engines.

To complete the description of the Rover 400 series, it should be said that this model was also equipped with two English 2.0-liter diesel engines, which, depending on their design, produced 86 or 105 hp. Diesel Rovers are rare (especially in Russia), and it is not recommended to buy such cars.They are even more expensive to repair than gasoline counterparts, and their resource and reliability are at an average level.

Most Rover 400s are equipped with a manual transmission, and a 4-speed "automatic", as already mentioned, was installed only on versions 416 with a Honda engine and 425 with a powerful V6 (the latest version was not equipped with a "handle" at all). The reliability of both boxes does not raise any special questions - the main thing is to change the oil regularly. By the way, it is inexpensive, even if there is an “automatic” at a branded service station, they will take only $ 15 for work. When buying a car made in the late 90s, you need to ask the seller if he changed the clutch. Otherwise, it is highly likely that it will have to be repaired at its own expense (the kit costs $ 185, replacement work - $ 130-200). And often, by the time the clutch is worn out (this happens after 100-150 thousand km with a more or less accurate ride), it is also necessary to install the gearbox oil seal (the price of the part is less than $ 10).

The Rover 400 has perhaps the least complaints about the chassis. Perhaps this is due to the fact that the suspension of the English car copies the Honda Civic. Although on the Rover it is much softer, more comfortable. And despite the fact that the Rover 400 was not created for racing on winding tracks, it is impossible to call an "Englishman" roll - if you wish, you can drive the Rover 400 very quickly and aggressively. The main elements of the chassis are capable of serving 100 and even 150 thousand km. Then, however, quite serious investments are coming, because the Rover 400 suspension is completely independent and has several levers. The price of the parts is not too high, and if the lower ball joint at the front is worn out, it will be enough just to buy it ($ 25-45), and not the entire lever assembly. From the top it will not work - there you have to take a lever, but it costs within the normal range - $ 100-150. Well, the most frequently replaced part in the suspension is the stabilizer bushings, which are enough for 30-50 thousand km. But their price is ridiculous ($ 3), and they will take about $ 15 more for the work.

The brakes also do not displease the owners of the Rover 400. You just need to constantly use the "handbrake" so that it does not turn sour (this can happen when the parking brake cable sheath cracks from old age). Many Rover 400s have ABS, although not all. In the presence of an anti-lock braking system, there is some possibility that during the operation of, for example, a 5-year-old car, the ABS sensor may break. In this case, its replacement will cost more than $ 120.

The British prefer to trace the history of the Rover brand since 1861, when James Starley and Josie Ternes organized the production of sewing machines in Coventry. In 1869, they also began to make bicycles. And in 1884, John Starley, the nephew of the founder of the company, patented the "Starley safety bike" with two identical wheels. In 1888, the first motorized tricycle was created, and in 1896 the company was renamed "Rover". In 1904, Rover was already deeply involved in the auto business - the first Rover 8 model with a 1.3-liter single-cylinder 8 hp engine went on sale.

In 1966, Rover was consolidated with Leyland, which later became British Leyland. However, the demand for Rover cars was not too great, so in the early 80s, the Margaret Thatcher government decided to involve foreign manufacturers in the work. And in 1984, the Rover 200 was born, built on the basis of the Honda Civic. In 1989, the 200 series was slightly updated, and the Rover 400 was also created.

In 1995, a new generation of Rover 400 was shown, also based on the Honda Civic. True, the English car differed in design and dimensions. Also, only powerful enough engines were installed on the Rover 400, including a 2.5-liter V6 (175 hp). But here it should be noted that a year before the debut of the second generation Rover 400, the British company came under the control of BMW. However, this did not affect the junior models of Rover - the only thing that the engineers of "Rover" and BMW managed to do while working together was to put on the conveyor a large model Rover 75 (debut took place in 1998). The Germans owned Rover until 2000, and then happily got rid of this company for a symbolic 10 pounds sterling (the buyer was the British consortium Phoenix).
