DIY electric shaver repair

In detail: do-it-yourself electric shaver repair from a real master for the site my.housecope.com.

Electric shavers are available with a mains supply from an outlet and with a built-in battery. Moreover, models of the second type are most often found. They have a power button, a charger, a battery and a motor (electromagnet) with shaving blades inside them.

1 - Grid
2 - Razor knife
3 - Clip
4 - Button for fastening the knife head
5 - Switch

Electric shavers with a grid system have a knife head, consisting of a flexible metal mesh that covers a blade, or knife, block on a holder or just a knife that makes a rapid oscillatory movement, which is created using a vibrator, consisting of two solenoid coils, which together with two springs move from side to side the holder with the knife block.

1 - Rotary knife
2 - Mesh disk
3 - the Drive shaft
4 - Switch
5 - Power cord

A rotary shaver has multiple cutter heads, each of which consists of a rapidly rotating rotary blade located under the mesh disc. Since the knives cannot be sharpened, they have to be changed when they become blunt. These razors are usually driven by electric motors connected to the blades by means of a gearbox.

To replace the blades in the shaver head, remove the protective cap from the shaver blade unit. Remove the shaver blade unit from the base. Replace the knives in the knife block.

Consider the repair of an electric shaver, using the example of a little-known Chinese razor Toshiko. If the shaver malfunctions, first check the integrity of the power cord. It may be broken inside, for example near the power plug.

The next weak link is the power button. To check it, just close the contacts with a screwdriver and see if the electric motor will work.

In this case, the problem seemed to be in the 220v voltage converter that charges the battery. As you can see in the photo, the transistor burned out and cracked.

After the replacement, a new problem was discovered - the battery almost did not hold a charge.

A 1.2 volt 600mA nickel-cadmium battery is installed here, so finding a similar one is not a problem - we just buy a new one in the store.

Do-it-yourself electric shaver repair is within the power of a master. Soberly assess the existing skills, if you do not see the difference between an inductor and a capacitor, you are afraid to measure the voltage of 230 volts without threatening people's lives, it is better to discard the venture. Everyone can clean the mechanism when the electric razor does not cut. But you boast to your acquaintances: now you know how to repair Mikma electric shavers.

Modern electric shavers form two broad classes:

The first are named for the knives that rotate the rotors of electric motors. Before considering how to repair an electric shaver yourself, we will describe the cleaning process. In most cases, when the device refuses to shape beards, it means that the working head is dirty. The electric shaver set is supplemented with a brush and a special spray. Let's find out the purpose of things.

The shaver head will last no longer than 1 year. After it is considered: it's time to replace. It is recommended to clean the unit every three weeks. In the case of a rotary shaver, start with the outer screens. Gently brush each one around, sweeping out the hair clippings.

After that, the knife block is unfastened from the shaver body. The unit is disassembled into its component parts. The holder with knives and nets is removed from the plastic frame. Each pair of cutting surfaces is divided into two parts. Now the table is littered with:

  1. plastic frame;
  2. holder;
  3. two to three pairs of cutting surfaces, consisting of:
  • rotary knife;
  • mesh.

Each knife is shaped like a flange sleeve. A section of a thick-walled tube, at one end there is a washer two to three times larger in diameter. On the formed platform with a hole in the middle, beveled projections provided with cutting surfaces are located in a circle. Be careful, even when dull, the blades of an electric shaver can be harmful to your health. By the way, it concerns mesh models. Handle knives with care. Everyone saw the grid. Round parts with slits in a circle that glide over the skin as you shave.

We sweep each element of the shaver head with a brush, if an aerosol is supplied in the kit, we process the knives and nets, and re-clean. It remains to put together the nodes by setting back.

A light click means the shaver is ready to use. Check the product after assembly. It may happen that the parts are assembled incorrectly, the knife block is crooked. The shaver does not work, still does not cut - the operation was performed incorrectly.

Disassemble the shaver following the instructions above and reassemble. It didn't help, it's time to buy a new head.

Wait a moment to take the brush. You can't do it. Even a gentle touch of the bristles can damage the correct shape of the mesh. The shaver does not work well and the blades may become blocked. Straightening the mesh at home without harming it is difficult. Electric shaver repair shops will be useless helpers.

First. If the shaver is washable, clean it after each use. Consider one thing. The electric shaver is good after the purchase for the first 3-5 procedures. Then the bacteria begin to multiply shock in the head, each use brings irritation to the skin, which is powerless to remove with special means for personal hygiene. Try to find a disinfectant spray instead, treat the blades before washing. Naturally, the remedy must be for these purposes. Try holding the knives under an ultraviolet light to block the growth of bacteria.

Regarding other types of electric shavers, they are cleaned every few procedures, without the use of water. For this purpose, the mesh is carefully removed. Cleanse from hair residues by blowing properly. Try, after removing the head, knock the end of the table gently. Partially removes dirt from the shaver mesh. The knife block is fanned with a brush. If there is an aerosol in the kit, use for additional cleaning of the device.

Try the recessed foil shaver after assembly in the same way as in the previous case. The effect is unsatisfactory - it's time to buy a new head.

The internal structure of a rotary electric shaver is simple. An engine is mounted inside, by means of an output shaft and an eccentric gear that transmits torque to two or three knives. The outside of the mechanism is protected by a plastic case.

To filter the instability of the supply voltage, there are several chokes and capacitors inside. Electric shavers designed for use with different voltages have a special switch. For the technical implementation of the possibility of operation from different networks, the stator coil has four windings. Copper wires clad with cambric have a fixed color.

Before disassembling your electric shaver, try turning on the one devoid of knives. There is no automatic blocking in the absence of a head - the drive must rotate. It turns out - it's the head. Remove, disassemble, look. It is possible that the complete electric shaver buzzes and the knives refuse to rotate.

The next step is to check the mains voltage. OK - we disconnect the wire with the block from the case, measure the voltage by plugging it into the socket. Attention, be extremely careful to avoid electric shock. Check the cord by ringing a multimeter (tester). The signal passes uncertainly - it's a floating cliff. Try using a different cord to power your shaver.OK - problem limited to wire.

It is the turn of the chokes, harmonic filter capacitors. Testing is done differently depending on the specific design of the shaver. In a difficult case, the elements are soldered (removed) in turn, the integrity is examined:

  • chokes are ringing;
  • the capacitors are not swollen.

There are special devices - it will be useful to measure the denominations of the elements. The capacitance of the swollen capacitors is less than the number on the case. It is simply impossible not to notice.

You can go the other way. Disconnect the stators, measure the terminal voltage in both switch positions. Be careful to avoid electric shock. The multimeter probes are connected to the switched off device.

If no malfunction is identified, go to the stator windings. Call each one if you know the pin locations. The resistance of the windings is Ohm units. It is impossible to fix a shaver with a faulty stator at home.

The terminals ring in pairs - a little, there is no guarantee of complete serviceability. Carefully measure the output current of the voltage switch in both positions. Let's make a reservation right away, the Russians in the country use a nominal 230 volts, measurements in this position will be enough. If there is no current, the problem is limited to the stator.

You can wind the stator coils at home if you have the appropriate skills. You can buy suitable ones.

The next thing to do when repairing electric shavers is to examine the armature winding. Let's check the voltage value of the motor brushes. The voltage is present, the razor does not work - the matter is in the anchor winding. Rewind at home if you know the parameters of the wire, the number of turns, and other characteristics.

Check the stator windings and armatures with a multimeter. Each is removed from the electric razor and rings. You can also measure resistance.

Repair of mesh models, Remington electric shavers, goes in a similar way. In conclusion, I would like to say: a breakdown of a block of knives with two nets is not a sentence. Find a second instance that is faulty, suffering from a different type of breakdown.

Of the two blocks, the one with the knives in order should be repaired. Try to appreciate the sharpness, try how well the pendulum moves back and forth. Repair the better foil shaver unit. It is strongly not recommended to rearrange the meshes from other models of devices, try to make the part yourself.

Each mesh is secured with several plastic holders. To notice, remove the knives from the head, examine carefully from the inside. Each mesh can be removed effortlessly. You can help with a small slotted screwdriver.

The review is over. It is better to take an expensive razor to a workshop, learn how to repair it - at a cheap one! We recommend storing household appliances that are thrown into the trash can. As a test material, they are invaluable for a novice handicraftsman. The experience gained will, of course, be useful in the future.

You can often hear the question - which is better, a machine or an electric shaver? There is no definite answer, approximately the number of adherents of one method or another is divided in half, since everyone has different tastes, capabilities and needs. For example, if a person often travels on business trips and cannot use the machine in the car, library or living room, there is no extra time (very busy), then an electric shaver is a good choice.

Electric shavers, like cars, are cheap - for 400-500 UAH, and there are also expensive ones - for 2000-3000 UAH and more. Both those and those shave, but, different design, quality, and the prestige of the company is also taken into account. I think it's not worth buying an expensive electric shaver if the income is not high, because both of them break down (wear out), and repairing an expensive electric shaver will cost several times more. Or, as is often the case with expensive gifts, as soon as its original resource ends and it needs repair, it immediately goes to the trash.

And if you do the prophylaxis of an electric shaver on time, change worn-out parts, then it can serve for years and even decades, like the well-known Kharkiv razor, especially model 33. Let's consider, in short, the device of electric shavers, what you need to pay attention to and how to repair them.

Electric shavers are available with mesh and rotary shavers.

The grid-type shavers are driven by an electric vibrator, and the head consists of a flexible metal mesh that covers the blade unit on the holder (knife), which makes a quick reciprocating motion. In some electric shavers, the oscillating motion is provided by a conventional rotary electric motor connected to the knife by means of a crank mechanism.

The rotary shaver has 1 to 3 cutter heads, each of which consists of a rapidly rotating blade located under the mesh disc. The knives are made of hardened steel, as a rule, no one sharpens them, but when they wear out, they change. These razors are usually powered by rotary motors connected to the blades by means of a gearbox and drive shafts. Hence the name - rotary razors.

Both the most expensive razors and not so much - all are made according to the principles listed above - to activate knives that shave off the stubble. Let us analyze, using the example of a razor "Kharkov - 33", how to repair an electric shaver. Here are its insides, except for the leather circles that are prepared for the anthers.

As you can see, there is nothing too complicated: an electric motor, knives, a gearbox, anthers, a switch.

The razor usually stops shaving for the following reasons:

- carbon brushes are worn out - it means they need to be replaced;
- worn out, knives;
- the mesh has worn out, a hole has formed, due to which shaving is not possible;
- malfunctions of the electric motor (most often the coil or rotor burned out);
- gearbox malfunction;
- a break in the power cord or poor contact in the connector (can be soldered directly), etc.

Repairing an electric shaver consists mainly of replacing worn parts, cleaning and lubricating. But, there are also nuances, and in each razor model they are different. For example, in a rotary electric shaver "Kharkov - 33" a thin place is the anthers, they are made of foam rubber and after a while they break.

As a rule, there are no such parts on sale, and with a damaged boot the shaving quality deteriorates significantly. And the razor is excellent in all other respects - it shaves well, comfortable in the hand, relatively quiet, easy to repair, but, such a problem, a design flaw that, in principle, can be easily eliminated.

Anthers can be made with your own hands, from soft leather, for example, or from dense, but not too much, fabric (see photo). The boot should not restrict the deflections (bends) of the shaft too much, since the shaver heads are made floating.

In the photo there is a disassembled boot, you need to cut a hole in leather circles and put them on metal bushings with glue (shoe - polyurethane or "Moment"), and from a piece of thin getinax (you can use plastic) to make an additional detail - "eight", with which you can will secure these anthers.

The factory anthers were simply sealed (fixed) with the help of getinax washers (see photo above) and plastic protrusions on the body, so we need a "figure eight", which we will fix on the screws.

And the screws can be taken from an old cassette tape, they are ideal for this purpose.

With an awl we outline where the holes for fastening will be, i.e. with a core and a thin drill of 1.2-1.3 mm, we drill the anther body together with the "eight", through and through, in 4 places.

And this is what happened, now our razor anthers have become collapsible and can be easily replaced or restored again. That's it, we collect the razor and use it for pleasure.

When the anthers wear out, the bristles and skin flakes get into the inside of the razor, absorb the lubricant, clog the gearbox, as a result, it barely turns, which causes the razor to overheat and may simply "burn out" (coil or rotor). Therefore, periodically, once every 1-2 years approximately, it is necessary to disassemble the razor, sweep out all this garbage from there and lubricate everything anew, but not much so that it does not flow. Lubrication - ordinary car oil, any.

Maybe one day the day will come when a new technology for hair removal will be invented and there will be no need to shave, but it will not happen today or tomorrow, which means that a device such as a razor must always be in good working order, in order, then shaving will be in joy.

After all, shaving is a daily denial of Darwin's theory. 🙂

As you know, all modern electric shavers are divided into 2 main classes:

Rotary knives are so named because the knives rotate like a rotor. Before considering repairing your electric shaver yourself, let's describe the cleaning process. Perhaps, nothing will have to be repaired, just timely care of the device's parts was needed.

In most cases, when the device stops fighting the beard, this means that the head is clogged. The set itself with an electric shaver often comes with a brush, as well as a special aerosol. It's time to find out what these items are for.

Roughly speaking, an electric shaver head lasts no more than one year. After this period, it is considered that it is time to change it. And of course, every 3 weeks it is recommended to remove dirt from this block. For a rotary electric shaver, start with the outer shavers:

  1. Carefully but gently brush around each of the nets, sweeping out all the hair clippings from them.
  2. Then, unfasten the blade block from the body of your shaver. Usually this module is broken down into its component parts.
  3. Take out the holder with knives and nets from the plastic frame.

The pairs of cutting surfaces are also divided into two parts. After disassembly, you should have on the table:

Image - DIY electric shaver repair

Each knife is shaped like a flange sleeve. This is a section of thick-walled pipe, at the end of which there is a washer three times larger in diameter. On the appeared site with a hole in a circle in the middle there are beveled projections along with cutting surfaces.

Important! Be extremely careful, even in a dull state, the blades of an electric razor can cause harm to human health. By the way, the same applies to mesh models. That is why it is worth handling knives with utmost care.

Everyone saw the grid. They are round parts with small holes in a circle that slide while shaving:

  1. Using a brush, brush each part of the shaver head. If the razor comes with an aerosol, then spray the nets and knives with an aerosol and re-clean.
  2. Now put all the elements together and set back.
  3. A small click means the shaver is fully ready to shave.
  4. Be sure to check the mechanism after assembly. It may well happen that the parts are assembled incorrectly, or the knife block is crooked.
  5. In this case, disassemble the shaver following the instructions above.

If that doesn't work, then it's time for you to get a new head.

Take your time to pick up the brush, as in the previous case. This cannot be done. Even soft touching can damage the original mesh shape. In this case, not only will the electric shaver work worse, it is quite possible that the knives will be blocked.

Instead of trying to clean your razor:

  • Find a disinfectant spray and spray the blades with it before washing. Of course, this tool must necessarily be designed for these purposes.
  • Also try to hold the knives under an ultraviolet light (lamp) to block the growth of bacteria.

To find out which part of the electric shaver needs repair, we proceed step by step.

The internal mechanism of a rotary electric shaver is quite simple:

  • Inside there is a motor, which transmits torque to two or three knives with the help of an output shaft and an eccentric gear. Everything on the outside is protected by a plastic case.
  • In order to filter the instability of the supply voltage, there are several inductors and capacitors inside.
  • Shavers that are designed for use with a variety of voltages must have a dedicated switch. To implement the technical capabilities of operation from various networks, the stator coil has four windings. Typically, their wires have their own fixed color.

Before you disassemble the electric shaver with your own hands, try turning it on without knives. In the event that there is no automatic blocking during the absence of the head, then the drive must rotate. If this happened, then the point is in the head. Remove it, disassemble and inspect.

Important! In this case, such an option is possible when the electric shaver buzzes in the assembly, but the knives themselves do not rotate.

The next step is to check the voltage in the mains. If everything is in order with the network, disconnect the wire together with the block from the case and measure the voltage on it by connecting it to the outlet.

Important! Be extremely careful to avoid electric shock.

You can test the cord by calling it with a multimeter. If the signal is shaky enough, you may be dealing with a floating cliff. In this case, try using a different cord to supply power to the electric shaver. If everything is in order, then the problem itself was directly in the wire.

If up to this point the problem has not been identified, go to the stator windings. It will be enough to ring each of them, if you know which and where the conclusions are located. The resistance of the windings must be Ohm units.

It is impossible to repair a shaver with a faulty stator with your own hands.
