In the first lesson, you will become familiar with the general anatomy of switching power supplies. Consider the basic concepts and important points that will help you diagnose and troubleshoot switching power supplies.
In this lesson, you will learn the main functional features and the principle of operation of switching power supplies. Understanding how a power supply works is a universal key to repairing any type of power supply.
PWM is a pulse width modulator that is an integral part of any pulse generator. This lesson will give you a complete understanding of the design and operation of the driver of the power supply.
Consider the output part of the power supply, namely the output circuits of the supply voltages. How to correctly diagnose the secondary part and what are the malfunctions associated with the outputs of the power supplies.
In this lesson, we will talk about the interchangeability of PWMs, because there are a lot of them. In addition, often when the power supply breaks down, the PWM controller microcircuit breaks apart and we need to identify it without any circuits.
Where to start looking for a problem with a faulty power supply? What could fail in the first place, and what in the second? How and where to take the required measurements? You will learn about all this from this video.
Moving on to the "heavy artillery" of the impulse. Despite the fact that TV power supplies may look intimidating to you, they only include 2-3 standard power supplies described in the previous lessons.
The approach to diagnosing TV power supplies is the same as for a cell phone charger, only there are several such power supplies in the TV module and they are more powerful, there is a mode control and a couple more nuances.
Power Factor Corrector is one of the functional units of composite power supplies. What is it for, how it works and how to quickly find it on the power supply module for further diagnostics.
This video tutorial will show you how to troubleshoot specific power supplies with PFCs. What you need to direct your attention to first of all when repairing such power supplies.
Speaking of power supplies, one cannot but mention DC-DC converters. Now they have completely replaced linear voltage regulators. Let's consider the device and the principle of operation of these power stabilizers.
With this lesson, we begin to practice repairs. We will make diagnostics, find the breakdown, the cause of the breakdown and bring the device back to life.
Power supplies have one “disease”, I would even say that there are several of them, but one is constantly taking the lead. It is with her that it is necessary to begin the initial examination and testing. What kind of disease it is, and how to treat it, you will learn from this repair.
Funny not in terms of “hry, I can’t,” but funny in terms of - cheap. This malfunction is often found in all switching power supplies from miniature telephone chargers to powerful power supplies for personal computers.
The power supply unit of the computer has the same structure as the power supply unit of the TV. Faults and "sores" are exactly the same. We will analyze in this lesson the repair of such a feeder.
One of the enemies of any equipment powered by a 220 volt network is voltage surges and drops. The reasons for such surges can be different and, of course, power supplies suffer from them in the first place.
In this video tutorial, we will repair an LCD monitor whose power supply has just failed. You will find out what typical malfunctions follow the monitors.
In this video, you are expected to repair the TV, namely its power module. Using this lesson as an example, you will learn how to quickly find the standby power supply unit, measure the standby power supply. It is the duty room that sometimes becomes the reason for the inoperability of the apparatus.
Poor soldering is very often the cause of electronic equipment breakdowns. Solder eventually loses its properties and forms microcracks and so-called rings. Sometimes visual inspection is not enough and the tapping method comes to the rescue.
Repair of the driving part of a switching power supply is probably one of the most time consuming. Of course, it all depends on how much the BP has suffered. Let's look at one of these repairs in this tutorial.
And in this repair lesson, we will follow the stages of the passage of the mains voltage. We need to find a short circuit in the rectifier part of the PSU. My thoughts out loud will help you adopt a troubleshooting algorithm in such cases.
Sometimes we cannot say for sure whether the power supply is at all, and sometimes the troubleshooting begins from other functional units, for example, from the power supply of the processor and memory. And only then we go to the power module.
In this lesson, we finish repairing the DAEWOO TV, bring it to life, returning it to full and healthy nutrition. )
Thank you Andrey very much for this course. Very informative, and most importantly - competently. I studied the material in one go. I myself have been repairing equipment since the 70s. I dealt with switching power supplies in the 80s-90s, when they began to be installed in the Soviet TVs "Temp", "Spektr", "Record" and others. in one word 3USTST. These were the so-called MP-3-3. But a lot of time has passed since then. Since the 90s, I have hardly renovated or designed anything. Much has changed in radio electronics over the past 2 and a half decades. Moreover, much has been forgotten, what to hide. For me, your video course has become a kind of return to the past. I refreshed old knowledge and, of course, learned a lot from your lessons. I remember that even in the first switching power supplies, only PWM, or as it was called before - a blocking generator, included a dozen stages on transistors, and now everything was crammed into the case of one microcircuit. You are very clear and interesting in telling everything that it is simply impossible not to study the material submitted by you. Not every specialist in their field is able to explain so simply and unobtrusively the work and arrangement of rather complicated things. Good luck with your creativity and look forward to new courses from you! Sincerely, Vladimir

Hello Andrey, I am a beginner radio amateur, I acquired the basics of radio engineering in my youth when I was a pioneer. And then I accidentally stumbled upon your course and decided to return to the dream of my youth - to learn to understand radio engineering more professionally. I am very grateful to you for the course, I began to understand more meaningfully what works. Thanks to your course, I recently repaired a DVD set-top box, though I don't have enough time to do what I love. I would be grateful to continue to receive educational materials from you on radio engineering. Best regards, Sergei

On the Internet, I came across the course "Switching Power Supplies". I ordered the digital version, but unfortunately it did not work out to download due to an unstable Internet connection. The issue was resolved the next day. Andrey sent me the course on disk with a surcharge by mail. The course came on the 10th day. I am not a beginner in electronics for a long time, but difficulties constantly arise with repairs of power supplies. Knowledge is never too much - that's why the principle I live and constantly learn. And here I made the right decision, as it turned out - I simply did not know a lot of things. The course is worked out competently - from theory to practice. Lots of troubleshooting examples. Thanks to Andrey for his work, he is doing a very necessary job.

I bought courses on the repair of switching power supplies. Bottom line: Two DVDs, one TV, three computer power supplies, a car charger and little things (phone chargers) were repaired. I confess that I had some knowledge of electronic components. The author suggested how you can do without a diagram and description of the operation of the device. Thanks!

Hello Andrei! I bought a course "Switching Power Supplies" from you to close questions with the principle of UPS operation. Ask, how am I doing repairs without knowing how the power supply unit works? And that's how I'm repairing: I changed the electrolytes - I didn't go. changed the optocoupler - did not go. changed the PWM - did not go. Until you get to the resistor with the floating resistance in this way, you will go over everything. And believe me, I'm not the only one! After watching the course, I seemed to have a puzzle in my head and I, just like you began to relate to repairs: "Why do you need a diagram if you DO NOT know the principle of operation?" I would even paraphrase - "Why do you need a scheme if you KNOW the principle of work!" And indeed, when you know how everything works, you do not need any scheme in order to find a breakdown. In fact, all power supplies are similar to each other, differ only in power and output voltages. Your lessons really change the way you think about a lot of things about electronics diagnostics. Great senkyu for you! Your namesake, Andrey Nikolaevich
The course can be studied as on Windows system, and on OS X (Mac OS)

At one time I remembered so, but with the fires) And thanks for the post
Fucked up, I got tired of autofocus for 1 minute of the first video. > _
@Rooost Everything you are talking about is just a wrapper, the main content.
If by the content, which by the way begins only from the eighth minute, then the explanation is obtained in the form: “here are amperes, here are volts, but this is an electrical circuit, everyone is clear, we go further”
Why is a voltmeter connected in parallel and an ammeter in series and how do they measure anything at all. What is all the same voltage, and what is current?
As a result, it turns out that those who want to know about this topic will not understand anything. For those who know, there is nothing interesting.
You must understand, I'm not just criticizing. Perhaps you will take note and will make the video even better, which will subsequently add subscribers and grateful responses to you.
What an irony, I just finished a video on this topic yesterday! All these 10 fit in one =)
Do not forget that Alexey has 10+ minutes of video, but here is a whole series of 10 videos.
I'm not saying that you need to praise Tesla and Edison, which is what all sorts of nondophysicists sin about - everywhere they sing to Einstein, no matter what holes they talk about 🙂 But any electronics need to start with an explanation of the current and the electrical panel, the user must be able to screw in a light bulb and charge his Tesla without fried, and he will be able to fix the microwave in in-depth lessons. This is not programming, current is serious.
In your opinion, programming is not a serious thing? Of course, for an error in the code, the author will not kill on the spot, but let's assume that the error was in the code for any technique, say, an airplane autopilot, or a controller on a life support system at a space station, well, or banal programming of robots at an auto assembly plant, this is an important thing and the results of an error can also easily lead to fatal consequences.
it is obvious that estress was not going to offend programmers)
the bottom line is that the fundamentals of electricity is precisely the current. I, too, did not know anything about the current before these videos, in physics at school I ignored this topic deafeningly. but it was just such videos that I was looking for until recently, in order to start from somewhere.
however, a very big minus, as I also noticed, is that in the video they operate with the concept of “current”, without explaining what it is in essence, except for “directed motion of charged particles”.
And no one will entrust the coding of the autopilot of an airplane to a coder who does not know such basics as logical functions, for example.
Video (click to play).
and if the course is for future electronics engineers and radio amateurs, who can really then climb into the dashboard, then it is necessary to explain and show what and how.
