In the not so distant 1985, the management of the Volga Automobile Plant decided to expand a new line of golf-class cars by putting into production a new model VAZ 2109 "Sputnik". In fact, it was the same "eight" only in a five-door body, but it was this difference that made the "nine" a real family car.
This model was very popular, and the manufacturer presented to the public a modernized version of the "nine" - VAZ 2114. So if you decide to repair these cars with your own hands, then apart from some design differences, you will not find anything new for yourself.

The motive for writing this opus for me was two points, which, unfortunately, are already considered commonplace among motorists:

  • Cracked and broken glass;
  • Blurred glass surface.

In the first case, for a VAZ 2109 VAZ 2114, headlight repair is reduced to gluing a chip-crack or to a complete replacement of the headlight glass. In the second case, you can try to restore the glass surface by polishing, but in both cases, for convenience and guaranteed quality of work, you will need to dismantle the block.

In this article, your attention is invited to a small photo instruction on how to repair the headlight of a VAZ 2109 VAZ 2114 with your own hands.

First, prepare a screwdriver and a "10" head, then:

  • Disconnect the supply wires from the turn signals and the headlight unit.
  • We press the locks of the hydrocorrector and, turning it counterclockwise, completely remove the cylinder.
  • We remove the block itself, for which we unscrew a pair of nuts on each side with the head on "10". The headlamp unit is dismantled at the same time as the turn signal housing.
  • At the last stage, the turn signal housing is disconnected from the block by unscrewing the two mounting bolts with a screwdriver.
  • Unscrew the four bolts securing the radiator grill;
  • We unscrew the frame and three internal fastening bolts.
  • Since the protection of the tumanok no longer interferes, you can unscrew the screws under the turn signals and the frame in order to pull out the eyelash (a very time-consuming process).
  • We remove the old sealant with a screwdriver and emery paper and apply a layer of a new one by degreasing the glued surfaces. Then let it dry for at least four hours (complete drying of the sealant occurs after 24 hours).

Advice! If the repair of the headlight of a VAZ 2109 VAZ 2114 includes replacing the lamps, then keep in mind that they are filled with halogen and get very hot. Therefore, when installing the lamp, do not touch its base with your fingers, as they leave greasy marks on its surface as a result of which the lamp quickly burns out. If, nevertheless, the contact occurs, it is necessary to degrease the lamp surface with alcohol.

As you can see, the repair of the headlight of a VAZ 2114 VAZ 2109 is not such a difficult process, as they say "we harness longer than we drive."Well, if the glass has just cracked, but is already beginning to let moisture in, you can try to seal the crack on the outside with super-glue and the price of the issue is only 20 rubles.
In addition to the above works on the VAZ 2114 VAZ2109, the repair of the headlight can consist in replacing its hydrocorrector, which consists of several non-separable elements:

  • Master cylinder mounted directly on the dashboard;
  • Working cylinders installed in the headlight units themselves;
  • Connecting tubes.

The whole problem is that if even the slightest leak of an anti-freezing special fluid occurs in the systems and connecting pipes of the hydraulic corrector, then its design, due to its non-maintainability, changes entirely, along with the pipes and cylinders.
This malfunction is detected when the adjusting screw fails to return to its original position the increased angle of inclination of the headlights. In this case, it is necessary to check the fluid leakage and the working stroke of the headlight rods (7 mm, with a tolerance of 0.5 mm), having previously removed the working cylinders from them.

  • Squeezing out the latch, we turn counterclockwise the working cylinder of the hydrocorrector and pull it out of the body.
  • … And remove the clamps from the connecting pipes, after which we bring them together with the working cylinders into the passenger compartment.

Well, everything seems to have been repaired, can I sit down and rest? No, my dear car enthusiast, there is another not as noticeable as the above, but no less important reason to delay car repairs, it is called: "VAZ 2109 and VAZ 2114: headlights - surface repair."

The main reason for the clouding of the glass surface lies in the very environment in which the headlight is located (dust and dirt particles), as well as in the driver himself. Yes, yes, next time pull your hand when you reach out to wipe the glass surface (dry cloth, auto chemistry), and time is far from being an ally for preserving the presentable look of the headlight glass.
If you do not want to waste your money and precious time, then polishing with your own hands will be the only possible solution to restore the surface of the headlights quickly and not expensive!

Attention! Polishing is only possible if the headlight is made of plastic, that is, the glass cannot be polished!

Thanks to modern technology, this procedure will take you no more than half an hour and it is advisable to carry it out every two years. After polishing, the light transmittance of the plastic increases to 80%.

The process itself is simple and consists of only two stages:

  • We grind the headlights, removing all visible chips and scratches;
  • We use finishing pastes for polishing.

True, it is necessary to take into account several nuances:

  • The degree of surface damage used depends on the grain size of the abrasive material. For example, we start with P600 and smoothly progress to P4000 grit;

Attention! The sandpaper and grinding wheel should not be "afraid" of water.

  • Abrasive pastes are also selected according to the amount of abrasive powder in them;
  • The sander is not pressed hard against the surface of the headlight and should be set to low speed.

Attention! Do not overheat the surface of the headlight, watch the temperature!

  • Prepare an abrasive material on a foam backing on a woven backing with a grain size of 600/1000/2000/4000, as well as polish and paper tape;
  • We clean the headlamp, glue the adjacent surfaces with tape, if possible, remove the adjacent elements;
  • Starting with a 600 grit and wetting the wheels, proceed to the initial rough polishing. We process until a uniform matte surface appears;
  • Each polishing step should take you no more than three minutes of working time. In the last stage, the headlight will be almost transparent;
  • At the finishing stage, we use polish and a foam rubber circle.

The whole process takes about 15 minutes, for manual polishing we multiply this figure by two.

  • We harvest and soak for 10 minutes skins with a grain size of 2000/1000/800 and 600;
  • First we use 600 (for deep scratches);
  • With the best surface condition, we begin to repair the headlight VAZ 2109 VAZ 2114 with a grain size of 800;

Finish the hand polishing with a clean, dry and soft cloth and polish.

  • The center of the car should be located opposite the vertical line 0;
  • Turn the handle of the hydrocorrector to the "driver + front passenger" position and turn on the dipped beam;
  • The light spot is individually adjustable for each headlight. The unused headlight during the adjustment of the second is covered with dense material;
  • If the position of the headlights does not correspond to the above figure, use the screws 1 (horizontal adjustment) and 2 (vertical adjustment) to adjust the position of the light spot individually for each headlamp;
  • Light spots are considered adjusted when their upper boundary is on straight line N, while points C1 and C2 of intersection of inclined and horizontal sections of light spots should be located on parallel vertical straight lines A and B.
