In detail: do-it-yourself gas 20 repair from a real master for the site my.housecope.com.
So we got to the record of the first capital. It was not possible to give the Victory for repairs in the winter, since the craftsmen had a strong workload. Only at the beginning of March they called me and said that they were waiting for the patient with open arms.
The next morning, they loaded the car onto a tow truck and drove it to the garage. It was there that all these years she was waiting for me, and now she is returning for repairs.
As usual, on the way, Victory attracted a lot of attention, a photo on the phone and enthusiastic glances after)
They unloaded the car under the shed, left a deposit for spare parts and went to work.
A couple of days later I called the foreman to find out how the work was progressing, in response I heard that the block had returned from the boring, and he is now adjusting the valves. I was eager to see the disassembled motor, so I put the camera in my bag and drove to the workshop.
Entering the territory, I saw my beauty, with a slightly lifted muzzle, although I missed her, and it is interesting to look under the hood, I still passed by.
I will photograph the emptied engine compartment later, and now, running inside the box, look at the block.
Here it is in all its glory!
Here it even looks like the head of an old robot.
With a childish smile on my face, I examine the block, while Uncle Sasha, meanwhile, talks about where the hands grew from those who collected it and how he twirled them on his reproductive organ.
The decision to disassemble the motor paid off! None of the valves worked, all channels were clogged with debris, instead of most of the gaskets, there was a thick layer of sealant.
The gas distribution mechanism has been sorted out, each valve will be adjusted

And here, instead of plugs, there was an ordinary building putty
New components have already been purchased for the motor; pistons, pins, liners and valve guides will be replaced.
When I was satiated with the beauty of my engine, Uncle Sasha suggested admiring the oil pan. It's not even old oil, I don't know what to call this slurry without swearing.
Today I offer you a short interview with a man who decided to restore a retro car and, in my opinion, did an excellent job with this task.
1 This is GAZ-M-20 Pobeda. Now it is completely like new: the turn signals are turned on, the wipers are working, the radio is playing. The car is on the move, but it takes a long time to warm up. They say she needs 66th gasoline, but in the absence of such on sale, the engine runs on any.
2 A couple of years ago, this car did not look so shiny. In an ordinary garage from two pieces of scrap metal, work began to recreate the historically accurate car.
3 Of course, such a hobby is quite widespread, and enthusiastic people restore not only cars, but also tanks, airplanes and everything that falls on their souls. Where do you think all these retro races, autoexotics and other rallies come from.
4 And of course, in this case, more than one person was involved in the car.
5 Now that everything is over and the guys are experiencing great creative satisfaction, Anton told us some of the nuances of this interesting lesson.
6 - Anton, what was your role in this whole business?
- I completely controlled the entire construction process, ordered and searched for spare parts, performed the functions of a think tank every day. In short, how to do it, where to screw it, where to find "this crap" - I did it.
7 - Who else was involved in the project?
- In general, 3 people worked - a welder, a mechanic and an assembler. The work lasted 2 years.
8 - Did you originally have the idea to recreate a full-fledged classic car from junk? Why did you want to do this? How did you know how to do everything?
- Initially, the idea was ours with my father. We began to choose a car that could be restored.The choice was between the Volga GAZ 21 and Victory. But the 21st Volga can still be found on the road, and a number of companies are engaged in their restoration, so the choice fell on Victory. None of our team have ever repaired cars. Everyone studied and started from scratch. We got the blueprints from the factory, photos on the Internet, spare parts catalogs of the 50s and began to do everything on the sly. Almost no one around us believed that we would be able to finish the job.
9 - Has Automotive Education Help?
- And how, without this it would be unrealistic to do it at all.
10 - How did you find old bodies and how did you buy them back?
- Each has its own story. For example, this car, which we restored, stood in the garage for 20 years after its owner died. We bought it for a ridiculous 40 thousand (then the recycling program of old cars had not yet begun, from which we probably saved this Victory). Further, according to the announcement, we bought 2 more Victories, one was disassembled and most of it was thrown away, and the other is now in the form of a body after sandblasting, you saw it in the garage on a lift. (see photo at the beginning of the article)
11 - Where did you get the missing parts?
- Everything here is individual. We searched for ads, for garages. I ordered the dashboard in Ukraine, rubber bands - in Moscow and St. Petersburg, chrome was made in Nizhny, a number of details for the region.
12 - Have you shown this car to anyone yet? Didn't they take you anywhere to the retro-parties?
- Completed a week ago. They did not show anyone, they did not take them anywhere. There are plans to participate in a retro race, autoexotics and a couple of promotions.
13 - What was your biggest challenge in this project?
- Probably the biggest difficulty we have now is to restore documents and put them on record. From technical difficulties - the body was asymmetrical due to the peculiarities of production at that time. I had to do almost a surgical operation to cut the rear wing and weld the amplifier.
14 - It was difficult with the tires. On Victory, I77 tires were installed, which could be in several versions, including the southern one (we have ordinary I77 tires on the front wheels, and southern I7 tires with a different side tread pattern on the rear I7). Tires can now be found somewhere for 3-4 thousand apiece! Other details that were difficult to find were the “birdie” on the hood and trunk hinges, they were made of silumin and after so much time they just broke like matches.
15 - Did you choose the color for a long time? )
- No, I came up with the color before the project, I knew how it should turn out. It took a long time to select paints. I spent about 2 hours at the picker to find a decent color combination.
16 - Where's the salon from? It is unlikely that it survived on the source. In my opinion it is perfectly sewn.
- It was made completely original, although almost all Victories that were restored by other people have leather or inauthentic interior. We have everything in the original, even the fabric pattern is exactly the same as the original Victories. The fabric was ordered in St. Petersburg! All plastic is new. The roof upholstery was also ordered 2 times in St. Petersburg, but it turned out to be unsuitable in size, and had to be sewn and refined by hand. But the most difficult thing in the salon is the decorative window frames with wood-like painting. They were made according to the original technology using a roller and a matrix, and then finished by hand. The drawing was applied with a thin brush.
17 - Did you plan to get any commercial benefit from this? Or advertising.
- Certainly. The project is purely commercial.
18 - So now you want to sell the car?
- I think so, in six months. But it is not interesting to sell in Russia, there are plans to sell in Europe or the UAE.
19 - Aren't you sorry?
- Very sorry. All the same, so much effort was spent as on a child. But we are starting the second Victory, so there will be no time for pity.
20 - After every successful project, there is an ambition to do something else on a new level. Will this be just the second Victory?
- Yes, there are already 2 projects already ripe. Another G-victory in the original (but older, with a different grid) and a Rat-Rod style victory.
22 We wanted to drive this Victory outside the garage territory, take pictures on the road. But it turned out that the car is not suitable for driving on snow (maybe because of the southern rear tires). We rearranged it with difficulty even on this site - so it skidded.
23 I think I'll be able to shoot her on normal roads in the summer. There will be documents and weather conditions. By the way, the car does not have side rear-view mirrors, it is not allowed. How to drive it in modern conditions !? )
24 In the cold, this car is not so easy to start and warm up: you need to pull some leaks and manual gas. Then warm up for a long time. Nobody warms modern cars for a long time - turned the key and drove off.
25 Separate pride is the radio receiver. He catches music out of thin air and yells through his single speaker.
The book describes the design and repair features of engines for GAZ-51, FA3-63, ZIM, M-20 (Pobeda) and GAZ-69.
For all the main parts of the engines, information is given on materials, heat treatment, tolerances and fit, wear, repair dimensions, repair methods and equipment used in this.
The book can also be used as a guide for the repair of various modifications of the GAZ-51 and M-20 engines installed on special-purpose vehicles and vehicles: dump trucks, buses, firemen, ambulances, forklifts, etc.
The engine needs to be repaired only when needed. However, to increase the time between major overhauls, it is necessary to prophylactically change the piston rings and crankshaft bearing shells after 35,000-40,000 km of run. With such a change of piston rings and bearing shells, the service life of the engine cylinders and the crankshaft journals is significantly increased. The liners should be changed not because they have already worn out, but because of the ingress of a significant amount of solid particles into the babbitt layer of the liner, which quickly wear out the surface of the shaft journals. Changing the rings prevents an increase in the amount of gases escaping into the crankcase and reduces cylinder wear. After replacing the piston rings and liners, the engine must be run in in accordance with all the rules given in the chapter "Running in a new car".
Do not disassemble the engine unnecessarily. Excessive disassembly leads to a violation of the relative position of the worn-in surfaces of the parts and to an increase in wear.
When repairing the M-20 engine, many replaceable parts of the GAZ-51 engine are used (see below).
For a slight increase in radial clearances in individual bearings, it is allowed in exceptional cases (when regrinding of the journal to obtain a proper clearance for some reason is impossible or very difficult), the use of shims made of brass foil. In this case, the gaskets must be clamped not only between the cover and the bearing, but also between the liners. This achieves a snug fit of the liners to the bed, which is necessary for good heat dissipation and to prevent the liners from moving in their bed.
When installing the shells of the main and connecting rod bearings, the covers must not be interchanged. Main bearing caps are machined assembled with a block, and connecting rod caps - assembled with connecting rods; therefore the bearing caps are not interchangeable.
When replacing the front main bearing cover, it is necessary to ensure that the cover is not displaced in the direction of the crankshaft axis (due to the gaps between the bolts of its fastening and the holes for them) and that there are no ledges on the bearing surfaces for washers 5 and 4 ( see Fig. 32).
* Detailed information on engine repair is given in the book by G. Schneider “Repair of engines of GAZ-51 and M-20 vehicles”, Gorky Regional Publishing House, 1954.
The GAZ M20 car, which also has the second name "Pobeda", was once quite popular. This car began to be produced in honor of the victory over the fascist invaders from 1946 to 1958.This model has become truly innovative, since it was the first to have a monocoque body. This car has a rather large and spacious interior, as well as an unusual and attractive exterior. Over the years, this model is found less and less on the roads, most of it came in poor technical condition. This car is ideal for tuning, which we will talk about in detail below.
When tuning GAZ M20 Pobeda, you can face a fairly large number of problems:
- The model has not been produced for several decades, the installed power units are already outdated, and the parts are not produced. Therefore, when looking for parts, serious problems can arise.
- The technical condition of almost all cars that have survived to this day is very poor. That is why it takes quite a long time to restore GAZ.
- Dismantling is difficult due to the large amount of corrosion. Even loosening one bolt can take quite a long time. Of course, it will be possible to cut the fasteners, but this is not always feasible.
The car in question can be obtained at a relatively low cost. Therefore, when carrying out tuning, you can try to implement a variety of ideas.
It is possible to carry out high-quality tuning only during preliminary preparation of the project. It provides for:
- Creation of sketches, which will display the design of the exterior and interior.
- Study of the vehicle structure to identify its weak points and eliminate them.
As for the design features of the car, they can be determined by various technical documentation and drawings. Problems can arise in the creation of sketches, since for this you need to be able to use 3D modeling programs or draw well. Today on the Internet you can find various services that allow you to create a car tuning design in just a few clicks.
When tuning VAZs, many strive to make them for modern racing cars. However, in the case of the GAZ M20, it makes sense to simply restore its interior body with some refinement of the technical filling. Modernization is subject to:
1.Installed engine. If you plan to use the car as an exhibit at various auto shows, then you can recreate the original engine. However, its technical characteristics are very outdated, and it will not be convenient to drive a rather large car. Therefore, for practical use, more advanced motors and related systems are being installed. The work on a complete replacement of the engine requires serious processing of the engine compartment, electrics, exhaust and cooling, and fuel systems. This method of modifying a car is very popular in the United States, where modern high-power motors are installed in classic cars in workshops.
2. Native suspension is simply not suitable for use nowadays: it does not cope with holes and heavy vehicle weight. If you plan to use GAZ for travel, then you need to install a modern suspension. In this case, the choice is simply huge, since the entire structure will have to be redone.
3. The transmission must be replaced with the installed motor, as these two units work together. Therefore, when choosing a motor, it is taken into account that a new gearbox will have to be selected and installed for it.
Almost all technical equipment will have to be replaced. As previously noted, you can restore the original nodes. Due to the lack of the required spare parts on sale, you will have to make them yourself. But with the installation of modern units, the problems are not much less.
Many fans of tuning old cars with their own hands choose "Victory" because of the rather unusual body shape.Today automakers do not produce cars with such a body, which makes GAZ unique and unrepeatable on the roads. The classics can be restored or changed according to current trends. Another common tuning method is using one car as the basis for a popular model. An example is the use of "Victory" when creating a Bentley.
When considering the work on changing the body, we note the following points:
- When working with cars, the production of which was discontinued several decades ago, you need to be prepared for such surprises as rust, running geometry and many other problems. At the same time, there are no replaceable spare parts on sale, you will have to create everything with your own hands.
- If it is planned to install large diameter wheels, which is very fashionable today, then you will have to trim the wheel arches and make room for wide tires.
- The body of the car in question is quite strong, and the installed engine and transmission did not allow it to gain high speed. Therefore, versions, the body of which has a skewed geometry due to a collision, practically do not come across. But everything will have to be checked and this moment.
Important! With full tuning, you will have to disassemble the car almost to the very foundation. Only then will it be possible to identify all serious problems with the body.
Dmitriy. When looking for a car to hone skills in car tuning, I recommend paying attention to GAZ 21. Every year these cars are becoming less and less, and it is quite difficult to find one for modernization. The history of the formation of the domestic auto industry is associated with it, in addition, the car was dedicated to the most significant event in the last century. Large body, simplicity of design - you can change the GAZ 21 almost beyond recognition.
Irina. I got this car by inheritance. For a long time he stood in the yard, they did not even know what to do with him - it was a pity to take it to scrap metal, it was impossible to drive. My husband offered to do the tuning, said let him do as he wants. Then I decided to join the work and started looking for various interesting jobs on the Internet. As a result, a second very unusual car appeared in the garage.
Artem. There was no money for a foreign car when I just got my license, and I didn't want to spend a lot. GAZ 21 got almost nothing. I decided to make something worthwhile out of it, due to the lack of free time it took about 2 years to complete it. Now I don’t want to change it either. Many units were taken from VAZ and GAZ, they also got it for nothing, although they had to be restored with our own hands. The work is painstaking, not everything worked out right away, but they simply cannot enjoy the result.
The Gorky Automobile Plant began production of the Pobeda M20 passenger car immediately after the end of the Great Patriotic War, in 1946. For 12 years, a little less than a quarter of a million legendary cars rolled off the assembly line, and this was a whole era in the Soviet automotive industry.
Tuning option for the car Pobeda GAZ 20
A modified GAZ 11 engine was installed on Pobeda, only the number of cylinders on the power unit was reduced from 6 to 4. The cylinder diameter was also increased on the engine from 82 to 88 mm. The engine developed a power of 50 liters. With. and had a bottom valve arrangement.
The power transmission was a 3-speed manual gearbox, the gearbox control was located on the steering column. The rear axle was specially developed for the GAZ 20 model, the pivot-type front suspension was borrowed from the German Opel Captain.
The electrical equipment of the "Victory" was already powered by 12 volts, although many cars of that time used a capricious 6-volt wiring diagram.
Design and tuning in a retro style of the car GAZ - 20
The thickness of steel is from 1 mm, and in places of reinforcement and on the side members, it reaches 2 mm.
Thanks to its solid body, some of the Pobeda vehicles have survived to this day.
Not so many "Victories" have survived to our time, but still, sometimes such cars are found on the roads. Rarely are the GAZ 20 power units remain familiar - after all, a 50 hp engine. With. and the 3-speed gearbox do not meet the modern requirements for cars in any way. Accordingly, in this case, the rear axle also has to be changed.
Despite the fact that the body of the GAZ 20 is quite strong, it still needs to be repaired.
The restored body of the volga gaz 20
- Paint "Victory" in metallic;
- Apply a matte finish;
- Cover the car with a special film;
- Make a stylish airbrush;
- Use chameleon color.
Before assembling the car, soundproofing is installed on the body. Splen and Vibroplast are used as soundproofing materials. With high-quality noise insulation, the ride in the car becomes much more comfortable.
Tuning of the salon of the Volga Pobeda
There are craftsmen who managed to make a pickup from Pobeda:
- Cut off the roof from the back to the middle of the cabin;
- The front part of the cabin was designed as a cabin;
- Only the front doors were left, the rear part of the body was welded on the sides and made whole.
The result is a car with a spacious luggage compartment.
Only now I don't want to transport goods on it - it's a pity to spoil the beauty, because the car looks very impressive.As a "workhorse" Pobeda GAZ 20 is practically not used, more often they try to bring beauty to the car. Indeed, even a non-tuned version of a retro car attracts the attention of others. Tuning undergoes:
- Side windows of doors and rear window - glass is tinted or silk-screened;
- Alloy wheels of larger size (R16 or R17) and low-profile tires are installed;
Original tuning of Victory
The optics are also changed during restoration, but they try to keep the shape of the headlights and lanterns in their original form. Of course, xenon or LED lights are installed, with the native light, the headlights of "Victory" would be dim.
