The sleeve itself is necessary to securely clamp the teeth and shaft, as well as to secure the shaft itself. The bushing is seated on a special spring, which provides the necessary clamping force, as well as control over the position of the teeth. Such a defect is considered quite common, especially in those rails where the sleeve is made of plastic.
As a result, the wear of the bushing and cylinder walls is evident, which leads to vertical movement of the rack and, as a result, the occurrence of knocking and backlash. To determine such a malfunction, it is enough to drive onto an uneven road and swing the steering wheel to the sides in motion, and then repeat this on a standing car. In addition, bushing wear will manifest itself in the transmission of shocks to the handlebars when driving on rough roads.
In this case, it is necessary to repair the rail - a simple tightening of the sleeve will do nothing.
The specified oil seal is located on the rack shaft. A feature of such a defect is the late detection of a leak, because there is no pressure on the oil seal. Signs of oil seal leakage are - hum when the steering wheel rotates, as well as a decrease in the level of fluid poured into the hydraulic booster reservoir. In this case, an urgent need to inspect the rail, since not only the oil seal can leak. Leaks can also occur due to defective clamps, pump, nozzles, hoses, etc. The likelihood of an oil seal leak is largely determined by the material from which it is made - during severe frosts, some of them crack.
This defect begins to manifest itself gradually - in a slight bite of the steering wheel on a cold car. In addition, the steering wheel becomes more and more tight, and its return to the zero zone will be incomplete.
The reason is in the design of the rings that rotate with the crankcase shaft. Over time, they form small grooves on the surface of the crankcase distributor and begin to leak oil. This leads to a loss of pressure and weight in the steering wheel.
The appearance of grooves is due to the addition of metal particles to the fluoroplastic from which the rings are made, which rub against the shaft. It is noteworthy that for most Japanese models, such problems are not typical, since rubber gaskets are installed under the rings.

One of the main problems is the wear of the gear mechanism, the main task of which is the process of converting a rotary motion into a translational motion.Moreover, almost all cars are characterized by wear of the middle link, since movement in the city (in the bulk) is characterized by driving in a straight line with small steering.
To determine the problem, you must independently inspect the mechanism by shaking the steering wheel to the sides from the middle position. If there are knocks, you should go to the service station and carry out a comprehensive diagnosis. If the center teeth are worn out, the entire shaft will have to be replaced, and it is recommended that only original components be used.
In the event of a breakdown of the steering rack, it is recommended not to risk it, and immediately go to a specialized service station. On your own, you can only carry out diagnostics, while repairing the rail by an ordinary driver, in the absence of proper knowledge, experience and tools, is unrealistic.
Preventive measures
With their help, you can significantly extend the life of the reiki:
accurate passage of irregularities and speed bumps;
monitoring the condition of the components of the steering rack, especially its anthers and oil seals;
warming up the oil in the rail in winter before moving in smooth and short turns;
do not hold the steering wheel for more than 5 seconds. in the end position, as this significantly increases the load on the gearbox and seals.
Such measures will significantly extend the life of the steering rack, as well as avoid costly repairs or replacement.

Repairing a steering rack or power steering gear, as it is also called, is an important matter - you need to be able to do it yourself. Why? Because if there is a malfunction of the steering rack, then there is a failure of the steering, and this can turn into a disaster on the road. To prevent this from happening, you need to know how to repair a steering rack .
Since the rail is the part that connects the steering wheel to the wheels, it also feels the unevenness of the roads, impacts when cornering. Accordingly, the steering rack wears out quite a bit and needs proper care.
there was a knock in the rail, a noticeable beat in the steering wheel;
the steering wheel starts to spin harder;
when the steering wheel was rotated, the play of the steering rack began to be felt;
power steering fluid began to leak from the steering column;
unusual sounds appeared when the power steering was working.
Basically, repairing a steering rack on a VAZ 21099 is not much different from repairing a steering rack on a BMW 3 (E46), for example. The principle of operation is the same, but there are some differences in the design. I must admit that the work is quite difficult - before starting it, you need to know the steering rack device.
A steering rack repair kit will come in handy, consisting of oil seals, O-rings, bushings, as well as a corrugation, a gear shaft bearing and a tube of grease. In the tool box you should have: a special octagonal wrench, bearing removers and pliers for mounting a circlip. Of course, a standard set of wrenches should also be at hand. Do-it-yourself steering rack repair is done on an overpass or inspection ditch.
This happens in three stages - 1) removal of the steering rack, disassembly / cleaning of parts; 2) replacement of unusable parts with new ones; 3) check the steering rack gear shaft.
Use a flat screwdriver to unscrew the tie rods from the steering rack
Unscrew the lower gear shaft plug.
Unscrew the lock nut.
Remove the circlip and drive out the shaft.
Remove the lower oil seal
Remove the retaining pin that is blocking the upper oil seal.
Turn the retaining plug, pull out the retaining ring by the wire.
Pull out the steering rack on the right side, remove the oil seal with a plastic bushing from it.
Pull out the oil seal, plug, remove the spring, the clamping mechanism.
Apply special grease and place the inner oil seal (spring down).
Place the rail in the housing.
Put the bushing on the right oil seal, lubricate all parts, install the oil seal.
Install the plug, remembering to fix it with wire.
Slide the lower oil seal onto the toothed shaft.
Set the steering rack to the middle position and insert the toothed shaft into place (after having lubricated it).
Install the upper oil seal, install the circlip.
Tighten the lower lock nut, as well as the bearing, plug.
Install and tighten the hold-down mechanism, spring and plug.
Further, the installation proceeds in the reverse order.
As seen, DIY steering rack repair it is quite within the power of a person who is familiar with repairs in general terms. By the way, mechanical and hydraulic steering racks, which are much more common than their modern counterpart, the electronic steering rack, are subject to self-repair. The latter needs a special setting, which is better to entrust to professionals.
The gearbox of the hydraulic power steering wheel (steering rack) is responsible for organizing the turns of the vehicle. This mechanism is an integral part both for cars with hydraulic power steering and for cars without hydraulics. The steering column serves as a connecting element between the steering wheel and the wheelbase, so its role in the safe operation of the vehicle cannot be overestimated.
The parts of the steering rack wear out quickly enough, because take on the main part of the load that is transferred to the car during cornering, when hitting any type of obstacle, when the wheelbase hits potholes and holes in the roadway. Do-it-yourself steering rack repair may often be required.
To prevent failure of the steering rack, a technical inspection of the vehicle should be periodically carried out, which allows you to identify all faults at an early stage.
The main signs indicating the appearance of deviations in the operation of the gearbox:
The presence of knocks in the gearbox, transmitted through the steering wheel of the vehicle;
An increase in the effort that the driver needs to apply to the steering wheel to turn it;
Extraneous noise arising during the operation of the hydraulic booster pump;
The presence of a backlash in the steering rack, which is felt when turning the steering wheel;
Traces of oil leaking from the hydraulic power steering.
Steering rack flowing with power steering
Any of the listed symptoms signals a malfunction that must be eliminated immediately. Lack of timely work can adversely affect the operational life of the mechanism, up to its complete failure.
If a problem is found, the car can be handed over to a car service specialist or the steering rack can be repaired with your own hands. It should be noted that self-elimination of defects requires certain knowledge about the device of the vehicle and some tools necessary for disassembling the steering rack.
Details
To fully repair the steering rack, you should have the following spare parts and tools on hand:
a special repair kit consisting of all the parts necessary for the steering rack;
corrugation;
gear shaft;
bearing;
lubricating mixture.
octahedron key at 17;
tools for mounting and dismounting bearings;
set of wrenches.
For the highest quality repairs, it is advisable to use an overpass or inspection pit.
First of all, the vehicle should be driven onto an overpass or inspection pit, after which, with the help of jacks, the vehicle should be raised and the engine protection (if present) and wheels should be dismantled. Next, you need to remove the heat-insulating plate of the gearbox and unscrew the nuts of the ends of the steering rods, which are knocked out of the ears with a hammer. The next stage consists of disconnecting the pipeline followed by a liquid removal procedure. To do this, you need to start the car engine, and then make several turns with the steering wheel in different directions.The process is completed by removing the fasteners located on the hydraulic power steering gearbox. After dismantling, the mechanism is securely fixed in a vice and cleaned of dust and dirt, which inevitably accumulate on parts during the movement of the car.
Photo instructions for dismantling:
The protection is unscrewed
Two tie rod bolts
The rods are removed
Unscrew the fastening of the clamps
Loosen the tie bolt
Removing the rubber boot.
Dismantle the intermediate shaft by removing the lock nut holding the part.
Removing the lock nut securing the rack shaft clamping cup.
Dismantling the shaft with bearing. To do this, the main shaft system is knocked out of the pre-fixed intermediate shaft with gentle blows.
Dismantling the adjusting unit.
Removing the adjusting glass.
Removing the pressure piston.
Dismantling the steering rack
After the completion of work on the disassembly of the steering rack, all the constituent elements of the mechanism are thoroughly washed from the oil and dirt deposited on them. Then the parts are subject to a thorough visual inspection for the presence of mechanical damage arising during the operation of the vehicle. Parts with serious defects must be replaced with new ones. In some cases, due to severe damage, it is advisable to completely replace the steering rack. Assemble the steering rack in the reverse order.
There are no significant differences between repairing the steering rack of cars with and without hydraulic power steering. Only bushings and compositions of fluids used to lubricate parts of the mechanism will be different.
After carrying out all the above-described work, it is recommended to carry out the diagnostic procedure for wheel alignment.
The total time it takes to repair the steering rack varies from two to three hours. These repair work refers to work of an average degree of complexity, which, with certain knowledge and skills, it is quite possible to carry out even a novice car enthusiast who has patience and perseverance in achieving a specific task.

In essence, all power steering rack and pinion mechanisms are the same. However, upon a more detailed study, some nuances can be distinguished. For example, the serration of the steering rod can be straight, angled, and variable pitch. We will not consider the advantages and disadvantages of each of the options within the framework of this material.
Our main focus today will be exclusively on the modern design of steering gears for passenger cars - rack and pinion. And the hydraulic amplifier installed in their considerable share is how much.
So, the principle of operation, as we have already found out, is the same: the rod moves in bushings installed in the steering gear housing and is sealed with oil seals. There are also rack and pinion mechanisms with a triangular shaft, as the masters call it. True, one and almost the only of its advantages can be called only the possibility of an earlier determination of wear. Otherwise, it has only drawbacks, the most significant of which is the impossibility of replacing the bushing and the stem oil seal without removing the power steering piston (we will return to this below).
The steering gear rod, regardless of the version, is pressed with a special stop, with the help of which the engagement clearance is adjusted. The pinion shaft of the steering gear is integral with the spool. The spool is a special bypass valve that, depending on which way you turn the steering wheel, redirects the flow of working fluid into the cavity to the right or left of the piston mounted on the steering gear rod, thereby helping you turn the steering wheel.This piston moves inside the cylinder, which is part of the body of the entire steering mechanism.
Separately, it is worth mentioning the ventilation inside the steering gear. The fact is that the anthers are quite tightly pressed against the steering rods and the steering gear housing, and therefore, when the rod moves in one of the anthers, a vacuum can be created, which, in turn, is fraught with accelerated wear of the anther itself or, even worse, dust suction or dirt from outside to the case. There are three design solutions to this problem: ventilation ducts in the steering gear rod, ventilation ducts in the steering gear housing, connected by a tube, and ventilation ducts in the anthers, which are also connected by a tube.
The main function of the steering rack (reducer) in the car device is to organize the rotation of the car. The steering rack is present in cars with power steering, as well as in those cars in which there is no power steering. It connects the steering wheel to the wheels, and therefore its role is very important for safe movement in the car. The diagnosis of this mechanism must be approached with the utmost responsibility, as well as repairs.
All cars are subject to rapid wear of steering parts, regardless of price and status, because it is these parts that take a hit at any turn, hitting an obstacle, hitting the wheels on bumps on the road.
To determine if your vehicle's steering needs repairs, look for the following signs of a malfunctioning mechanism:
there is clearly a knock on the steering rack, which is felt through the steering wheel of a car;
increased effort required to rotate the steering wheel;
there were extraneous sounds and noise in the power steering pump;
there was a backlash in the steering rack, which is felt when the steering wheel rotates;
power steering oil began to leak from the steering rack.
If any of these signs appear, do not delay repairing the steering rack. Untimely repair of steering parts can lead to loss of maintainability of the mechanism.
So, you have a steering rack leaking. What to do, how to make repairs and adjust the steering performance? First of all, it is worth noting that it is actually very difficult to repair this unit, and it is worth starting the procedure only if you have all the necessary equipment at hand, as well as experience and knowledge in the field of car construction.
The steering rack mechanism consists of the following parts:
toothed shaft;
steering rack support sleeve;
spool mechanism.
Repairing a steering rack usually consists of several stages:
Dismantling, disassembling the steering rack and cleaning the accumulation of all its parts.
Replacement of damaged parts of the mechanism with new parts.
Diagnostics of the toothed shaft of the steering rack.
Before starting repair work, you should get a special repair kit, which includes new parts for the steering rack (oil seals, steering rack bushing, ring seals, and others). How to remove the steering rack.
Drive the car into a hole or raise it with jacks.
Remove the engine protection (if you have one).
Remove the steering rack heat shield.
Unscrew the fasteners on the steering rack.
Remove the rail from the mountings and pull it out of the interior of the car.
It is worth noting that it will be better for you to remove the steering rack along with the steering rods, because the new anthers will be much more convenient to pull on the special protrusions on the steering rods. This will help you to fit perfectly sealed anthers.
Unscrew the rack from the steering rods using a special flat-head screwdriver.
Unscrew the bottom plastic gear shaft plug.
Unscrew the lock nut.
Remove the retaining ring and gently knock the shaft out of its place.
Pull out the lower oil seal.
Tap out the locking pin that is blocking the upper oil seal.
Unscrew the retaining plug and pull the retaining ring out of the wire that will show up as you turn it.
Pull the steering rack out through the right side and remove the oil seal and plastic bushing from the rack.
Remove the oil seal and plug, pull out the spring and pressure mechanism.
Next, wash all parts from oil and dirt deposits and carefully inspect all parts for mechanical damage due to wear. All damaged parts must be replaced without fail. If the surface of the steering rack and the gears of the toothed shaft have significant damage, then most likely it will be necessary to replace the entire mechanism as a whole (how to replace the steering rack with a VAZ 2109, read in our material).
Carefully install the inner oil seal in its place, having lubricated it with a special grease (you need to put it through the right side with the spring down).
Place the rail into the housing.
Slide the plastic sleeve over the right gland, lubricate all parts with grease, and push the gland back into place by pushing something.
Install the plug and secure it with the retaining wire.
Place the lower oil seal on the toothed shaft.
Place the steering rack in the middle position.
Insert the toothed shaft into the seat after lubricating the seals with grease.
Gently push the upper oil seal into place, using a hammer to push it into place. Install the retaining ring.
Install the bottom lock nut, bearing, plug.
Install the hold-down mechanism, spring and plug. Tighten tight.
Then install the rail on the car in reverse order. Be sure to do “camber-convergence” after the procedure for repairing or replacing parts. Do-it-yourself steering rack repair without and with power steering has a lot in common, the differences are minor: different bushings and the composition of the lubricant.
If any of these signs appear, do not delay repairing the steering rack. Untimely repair of steering parts can lead to loss of maintainability of the mechanism.

Hello dear motorists! You will not argue with the fact that the steering of a car with a rack and pinion mechanism and power steering is actively conquering the car market.
Naturally, there are experts who argue that the power steering has a lot of shortcomings in comparison with the mechanics. But an ordinary consumer in the form of us hardly notices what specialists can see.
The power steering mechanism allows you to operate conveniently, comfortably, dynamically and safely. What else does a driver need?
But, alas, like any other product, part or unit, the steering elements fail. This is not surprising, because the steering gear and steering rack with power steering are operated in an intensive mode, experiencing constant loads.
Therefore, malfunctions of the power steering rack should not cause you to panic, a common occurrence. It is only required to identify the malfunction in time and repair the power steering rack.
Someone has enough knowledge and experience in order to independently repair the steering rack, someone does not. Then you should go to a car service where the steering rack hydraulics are being repaired.
Well, for now we will figure out what types of repair of steering racks with power steering are. We reviewed the power steering rack device on the website quite recently, so there is no point in repeating it.
Equally, it makes no sense to describe the technological operations for disassembling the steering rack, replacing faulty parts and assembling. After all, different brands of cars are, albeit not fundamentally, but structurally different devices. Therefore, the manufacturer's repair manual for your car is a help.
A reasonable question may be - why should I know what kind of repair of hydraulics of steering racks or power steering is. The answer is also simple.In order to at least roughly understand how much time and money you will have to spend on repairing the power steering rack.
Repair of a steering rack with power steering - replacement of parts using a repair kit. The repair kit includes: all piston and distributor o-rings, high pressure oil seals, support bushings and shaft bias inserts. During the repair, the surface of the shaft can be machined on a grinding machine.
Distributor repair - replacement of the inner and upper oil seals, replacement of O-rings. The shaft is ground. If there is annular wear in the valve housing, the housing sleeve is required.
Repair of a steering rack with restoration of the shaft ... Includes: all of the above operations, plus full restoration with babbitt shaft extension, chrome plating and grinding.
Overhaul of the steering rack - accordingly, it includes all of the above operations, plus replacement with new ones: the transverse shaft, side compression of the shaft, side compression nuts and distributor, high pressure pipes and steering rods. If necessary, replace the steering rods.
leakage of hydraulic fluid from the rack - malfunctions of the shaft seals - wear, corrosion of the shaft,
knock in the rack - wear of the ball joint of the steering rod, wear of the central tooth in the steering rack, silent blocks for fastening the steering rack, knock of the steering column cardan,
the rack gives a backlash - the ball joint of the steering rod, the angle of adhesion of the screw and the teeth of the rack is broken,
tight steering wheel or insufficient return of the steering wheel to the center position - the shaft is bent - the rack or rack housing.
when the steering wheel rotates, an itchy sound appears - the oil level in the tank is below the set value, or critical wear of the rotor pair,
tight steering wheel, but with increasing speed it becomes lighter - a frequent defect, the flow valve hangs,
tight steering wheel, but with increasing speed it becomes lighter, while an itchy sound (howl) appears - most likely, there are seizures on the rotor and mating surfaces,
great effort on the steering wheel in both directions - the rubber ring of the floating washer in the pump collapsed,
tight steering wheel and when rotating, a characteristic whistle is heard from under the hood - the drive belt is weakened (slips)
Naturally, these are not all signs of malfunctioning power steering rack and pinion. But, according to the first signs that you have already remembered, you can at least understand in which direction of the steering you look.

Whatever the design of the steering rack (for control on hydraulics and on mechanics, it is different), this unit, through ball ends, is connected to the car wheels. At the same time, mechanical control can most often be seen on domestically produced cars and foreign cars with high mileage.
As a rule, hydraulic control is found only in new foreign cars. At the same time, in any situation, it is the steering rack that is the mechanism that is quite often prone to various breakdowns, since all mechanical influences fall on it: from impacts - when driving over bumps and broken roads, and from getting dirt on it. Thus, repairing the steering rack becomes a matter of time.
Among the signs of a malfunction of the steering rack, which are more common than others, the following are distinguished:
The steering wheel becomes more and more difficult to turn (for a car with hydraulic control, this problem can be temporarily solved by constant monitoring to ensure that the oil is always at the required level);
When cornering, on vehicles with hydraulic control, various uncharacteristic noises from the hydraulic booster begin to appear;
On the steering column, a knock is periodically transmitted, clearly going to the steering wheel;
When cornering, a slight backlash appears;
Oil begins to leak (it can occur both on the hydraulics and on the mechanics), due to the failure of the oil seals located on the steering rack.
Of course, when a backlash or knocking appears, you can first try to tighten the steering rack, as it is possible that the fasteners are simply loose. If this does not help, then the conclusion suggests itself that it is necessary to repair the steering rack as soon as possible. In the worst case, the steering rack will need to be replaced.
We start repairing the steering rack
For mechanical steering, steering rack repairs are easier and faster than hydraulic steering. Therefore, the most difficult repair option will be considered below - with hydraulics.
Before proceeding with the repair of the steering rack on hydraulics, you need to know that it consists of four main parts: a gear shaft, a support sleeve, a spool mechanism and a pump that drives the rack. During the repair itself, a special repair kit will be needed, which may differ significantly for different car brands.
And the last thing that needs to be done before the repair is to place the car in the inspection pit. See the video below: "How to remove and disassemble the steering rack on the VAZ 2110, 2111, 2112"
Having aligned, we stop the steering wheel with a locking mechanism, or with a sealing tape (fastening it to the steering column), after which we fix the handbrake.
We dismantle the protective casing from the engine, remove all fasteners (put them in a separate box);
Having displaced all the pipes of the air filter, dismantle it;
Disconnect all electronics that may interfere with the dismantling of the rail;
We carefully pump out the liquid from the pump tank into a clean container;
From the passenger compartment, the cam unit is unscrewed, and then knocked out;
Installed on a hydraulic booster, HPT and LPT (high and low pressure tubes) are carefully unscrewed using a wrench that is specially designed for this procedure (if you start doing this abruptly, you can spoil the thread, and further car repairs, at home, will become impossible);
We dismantle the cam mechanism located next to the brake and gas pedals;
We dismantle the rack, with all its parts and bearings.
Sometimes, before repairing the steering rack, you also have to twist the steering rods (dismantling the steering rod), along with the ball ends. However, you can do without this if you do everything carefully: both the tie rods and ball ends can be obtained along with the rail. This will also help, in the future, quickly install new anthers.
The next stage of work is the disassembly of the steering rack itself, as well as the replacement of all necessary parts.
Before unscrewing anything, you need to remember everything (photograph), since the further assembly order implies working in the reverse order.
Steering rack disassembly process:
We unscrew the plug (it is made of plastic) with a screwdriver, which is located directly on the gear shaft;
We very carefully unscrew the lock nut, having previously lubricated the entire thread;
Using a screwdriver, pry on and dismantle the retaining ring, and then the lower oil seal;
Next, the upper oil seal is replaced.
Dismantling the upper oil seal is carried out using a hammer: knock out the locking pin that blocks the upper oil seal, then the oil seal itself is removed, which is taken out together with the bearing. The upper oil seal wears out quickly enough, therefore, during such a disassembly, it is usually changed. An expensive bearing, at the same time, is knocked off by careful blows on it with a key, but so that balls do not fly out of it.
If the lower oil seal on the steering rack is out of order, then, after dismantling the old element, the new oil seal and bearing are carefully lubricated, and then put with the spring down. Then the rail itself is mounted in its body, and a plastic sleeve is installed. Further, it remains to simply lock the oil seal, in the position we need, pressing it with a screwdriver from the edge.
Standing on the gland, the plug is fixed using a retaining ring;
Using a new lower oil seal, we mount it on the toothed shaft;
We carry out the centering of the steering rack;
We carry out the installation of the steering rack bushing, carefully turning it to the position in which it was before disassembly;
We install all spare parts in their places, in the reverse order of disassembly.

The logical completion of the repair of the steering rack is the camber and toe adjustment procedure, since the dismantling of the steering rack was carried out along with the removal of the steering rods.
Be sure to adjust the steering wheel if it has shifted to one side. This adjustment is made by removing the signal cover and unscrewing the nut under it. Further, they simply put the steering wheel exactly on the splines, and assemble everything in the reverse order of the process performed.
Keeping the steering unit in good working order is facilitated by the following actions:
If you regularly (according to the operating manual) change and add oil to the steering gear on time;
Change all its details in a timely manner;
Timely adjust wheel alignment;
Drive carefully and on good roads;
Maintain the working pressure in car tires (what pressure should be in the tires).

Compliance with all the described rules will allow you to avoid frequent repairs of the steering rack, and enjoy pleasant driving for a long time.
