The entire exhaust system of the VAZ 2108/2109 consists of three elements:

All three elements are interconnected by pipe ends that fit perfectly into each other and completely seal the interior space. For reliable fixation, reinforced gaskets are also used. The pipe is attached to the engine exhaust manifold using a flat flange and four studs.
The rear part of the device (directly the exhaust pipe) is fixed to the bottom by five rubber hangers. It is made up of two pipes, the first is connected to the flange at the collector, the second to the gas receiver.
A resonator (or an additional muffler) is a barrel with baffles inside and a tube with holes. Passing through the holes, sounds and noises enter the resonator chambers and are quickly converted into thermal energy.
In terms of its structure, the main "glushak" is similar to the design of the resonator. It is also assembled by the rolling method, that is, without the use of a welding machine. This technique avoids corrosion.

That is, the exhaust gas removal system on the VAZ 2108/2109 is arranged in the same way as on the previous VAZ models. The only difference is in the "nine" mufflers - a catalytic converter is installed there (on injection versions). The task of the catalyst is to reduce the toxicity of emissions into the environment and increase the efficiency of the engine due to the low resistance of the exhaust.
You can identify faults in the operation of the muffler yourself, and without having special knowledge in the automotive industry. First of all, sometimes observe the composition of the exhaust gases while driving. If, when you press the gas pedal, black smoke escapes from the pipe, then the mechanism is probably burned out and has holes.
Experienced car enthusiasts know that it is better not to bring the state of their "glushak" to a critical one, but to identify the smallest malfunctions in advance :
Check for knocks and gurgles in the exhaust pipe while driving.
Jack up the car, inspect the exhaust pipe. All parts must be free of rust, burnout or holes.
Watch for moisture dripping from the joints of the pipes of the muffler. The accumulation of condensation will quickly lead to the formation of rust and corrosion of the metal.
Evaluate how hot the engine gets after short trips. If the engine is seriously overheating, then this may serve as the first signal that the exhaust system is not working correctly.
Most often, motorists complain that the device begins to knock hard while driving. In this case, the blows of the pipe can be made either against the body of the gas tank, or against the body of the car.
The knocks can be very loud, which leads not only to a decrease in ride comfort, but also to a rapid deformation of the muffler itself. In these cases, it is necessary to immediately take measures to isolate the pipe from the tank or body:
change hanging rubber bands (it is quite possible that during operation they are very stretched and can no longer hold the pipe in one place);
if the knocking started after replacing the device, then it is necessary to turn the mounting flange and make sure that all the gaskets are in their places evenly;
if the muffler was replaced by a "cooperative", home-made or from another car model, then you need to try to ensure that all fasteners and joints exactly match the original.
In case of strong swinging of the pipe, it is necessary to replace the rubber bands with new ones.
If none of these measures work, you will have to use a thick piece of rubber to pave the impact of the muffler. The rubber will eliminate the sound of impacts and keep the pipe surface from deforming.
It is very easy to pierce the device - just drive at high speed on an uneven road. Even the thickened pipe walls cannot prevent the metal from being strongly deformed, and even holes can form.
The legislation of the Russian Federation clearly indicates that the operation of a vehicle with a punctured muffler is prohibited.
If the driver finds that the mechanism is broken, he has only two options:
Replace with a new one. This is the easiest way, besides, you can buy a handicraft "Glushak" and put it on the car yourself.
Using a welding machine, weld a hole in the housing. This option is more costly, since it is necessary to very carefully apply welding seams so as not to burn through the muffler. Depending on the scale of the damage, it will be necessary to remove and replace either the entire element as a whole, or only some of it.Each operation is performed quickly and easily, the main thing is to prepare all the necessary set of tools in advance:

The easiest way to perform this procedure is on an overpass or inspection pit. If possible, you can use the lift. However, most often, car owners simply raise the left rear part of the car on a jack and dismantle the muffler while lying down.
It is necessary to wait until the exhaust system has cooled down after driving, as you can easily get burned if you come into contact with hot metal. Then you can get to work:
Disconnect the main "muffler" from the resonator. To do this, you need to find a tie (clamp) and unscrew the fastening bolt. If the bolt does not loosen, you can spray it with WD-40 grease.
After the bolt is unscrewed, you need to remove the pipe fasteners and pull the muffler out of the resonator.
Then you can remove the hanging rubber bands - usually the main mechanism is easily released from them.
The main muffler is completely dismantled; you need to pull it out from under the car.
Stuck and rusted bolts can delay the dismantling process.
We will proceed from the fact that the main "glushak" has already been removed, since to dismantle the resonator, it will need to be removed:
Disconnect the resonator from the receiving tube. To do this, you need to unscrew two bolts.
If the bolts are corroded, WD-40 grease can be used again.
After unscrewing, you need to raise the resonator and disconnect the product from the suspension rubber bands.
If the rubber bands cannot be removed, you can pry them off with a flat screwdriver.
Then you can pull the resonator barrel out from under the car.

This part of the exhaust system almost never fails. It connects directly to the exhaust manifold, so before dismantling, you will need to jack the front of the machine:
All nuts are disconnected from the collector, which fix the pipe to it.
The catalyst is carefully removed from the rubber mounts.
The only thing that can cause difficulties is loosening the nuts at the inlet to the manifold. Since they are close to the motor, they heat up more than the fasteners on the resonator or muffler. Therefore, the nuts can simply stick to the metal.
The catalyst is very rarely dismantled, since it usually does not burn out and does not deform throughout the entire period of vehicle operation
The installation of a new product must be carried out in the reverse order of removal. Usually there are no problems with this procedure. However, the car owner should know the basic nuances of replacement:
It is imperative to change the reinforced seals in the system.
It is also advisable to replace the suspension rubber bands with new ones, however, in general, the replacement is carried out at the discretion of the owner (if the suspensions remain elastic and do not have cracks, then they can still be used).
To replace all bolts, it is recommended to buy products made of bronze and other heat-resistant materials. All parts of the muffler are heated, so the bolts and nuts must be as reliable as possible, otherwise they will stick to the metal after the first trip.

The double muffler really gives the car a more solid look. In addition, the wear of the pipes will not be so fast, since two devices are in operation at once. It is recommended to weld on the second exhaust pipe immediately after the resonator and lead it out to the right side of the bumper.It is better to entrust welding work to professionals, since the quality of the exhaust will also depend on the quality of the welding.
You can hook a new muffler with rubber pendants - again, you will need to weld the hooks to the bottom in order to hook the mechanism on them. Some car owners make special rubber blocks that include mufflers, avoiding the hassle of rubber bands. This is a more reliable way of wiring two "glushak", although it requires a lot of investment.
In this case, double nozzles are used for each muffler.

The resonator housing is a round tube with an aluminum coating. Inside there is another pipe with holes, at the ends of which there are fastening flanges. With their help, the resonator is connected to the gas receiver of the car.

the volume of the engine increases sharply, the engine begins to growl;
at the same time, the engine power is reduced by two, or even three times;
the cabin smells like exhaust fumes;
