Chevrolet Cruze appeared on the market for a long time, but has not yet been able to win sales of its predecessor - Chevrolet Lacetti. Despite this, the car has already found a large number of fans throughout the country. No wonder this model is still the leader in the sales lists in the United States. But THAT has not been canceled even for the best-selling and most popular cars, and the age of the oldest models already portends an early repair. Let us dwell in more detail on the repair of the power steering of the Chevrolet Cruze.

Complete diagnostics of power steering after removal and disassembly.

If we make repairs, then this is included in the cost of work.

Complete diagnostics of the STEERING RACK.

If we make repairs, then this is included in the cost of work.

Due to the relatively small age of the car, most of the breakdowns of the hydraulic booster occur due to untimely maintenance, overly aggressive driving, and, of course, not the best condition of the roads. Here you can add low-quality maintenance, the use of low-quality consumables and fluids - all this, although not immediately, will spoil the state of the components of your car.

The main types of breakdowns are typical for this class of car:

  • Untimely replacement of the power steering fluid. One of the most urgent and frequent breakdowns. Untimely fluid replacement, or in rare cases, unscrupulous maintenance at service stations results in expensive repairs to the Chevrolet Cruze power steering.
  • Steering rack play. No matter how hard you try, the mechanical wear of the rack parts will lead to a noticeable backlash, which will hasten to affect the steering accuracy.
  • The hum of the power steering. One of the "childhood" diseases of this model, which almost all owners face. It comes from the vibration of the tubes through which the power steering fluid passes. Unfortunately, official dealers do not solve this problem.

Of course you can. If you have been working in a car service for a long time, you do not know the device of a car from books, and more than once have been involved in complex car repairs. Otherwise, it would be better to entrust this matter to specialists. Repairing the power steering of a Chevrolet Cruze (as well as any other car) is a very difficult process. In addition, in some cases, it is simply impractical to carry out repairs, and it will be more profitable to immediately replace the part, which the master can warn you about.

To drive a Chevrolet Cruze 1.6 (109 hp) and 1.8 (141 hp), a power steering (GUR) is used, which is part of the steering rack and consists of the following parts:

  • Expansion tank - a container with a sealed body in which the working fluid is stored.
  • Power steering pump - pumps the working fluid into the steering gear and is responsible for its circulation in the control system.
  • Power steering tubes - designed for transporting working fluid.

The table lists the main signs of a breakdown, which are often associated with a malfunctioning power steering, and also lists their causes:

Under ideal conditions, the working life of the power steering on the Chevrolet Cruze is 250 thousand kilometers. But with too aggressive driving style, regular off-road driving and ignoring the need to undergo maintenance, the rate of power steering wear increases significantly. Most often, the first signs of a breakdown are manifested in the fact that the power steering is buzzing or the steering wheel is turning tightly.

Important: with strong wear of the power steering, the repair price may turn out to be so high that it will be impractical to repair it. If this is your situation, it would be more logical to buy a new pump (the article is indicated directly on the parts).

In service centers, special stands are used to diagnose the hydraulic booster. But in fact, the problem is easy to detect without auxiliary equipment. To do this, it is enough to use the information from the table above.

To repair a power steering with your own hands, you will need the following tools:

  • Drill and drill bit 12 mm.
  • Sandpaper grit P1000 - P
  • Syringe.
  • Key for 12.
  • Retaining ring remover.
  • Repair kit (washers, O-rings, bearings, gasket, oil seal).

Whatever the problem, you will have to remove the pump to fix it. To do this, unscrew the fastening bolt, unscrew the lock nut and remove the drive belt. Use a syringe to pump the working fluid out of the system. Image - DIY Chevrolet Cruze gur repair

After that, it is necessary to turn the steering wheel all the way and keep it in this position until the oil stops flowing.

The next stage is disassembly. The first step is to disconnect the pipeline. For this you need:

  • Loosen the clamps securing the hoses at the connection point to the expansion tank.
  • Remove the bolt holding the high pressure hose.
  • Disconnect the tubes.

Next, unscrew the axle bolt and lock the pulley with a metal rod or screwdriver, then remove the nut that fixes the pulley, remove the pump and clean it of dirt.

After that, you need to unscrew the bolts that hold the back cover, pry it off with a screwdriver and remove. You will need a puller to remove and replace the bearing. Image - DIY Chevrolet Cruze gur repair

All elements of the power steering should be laid out on the table and made defect. Parts showing signs of wear must be replaced.

Most often, to repair the power steering, it is enough to replace the repair kit. But sometimes during operation, irregularities form on the main elements. Examine the surfaces of these parts for burrs and nicks. Particular attention should be paid to the condition of the shaft: the lateral parts of the grooves must be sharp. You also need to examine the inside of the cylinder - the surface should be flat. If it is wavy, then the problem is in the cylinder.

Small burrs and irregularities are smoothed out with sandpaper. More serious deformations will require a sander. If it is not there, you can construct an analog using a drill, a thick drill and a sandpaper.

The service life of the power steering and steering rack depends on how well the operating rules are followed. Experts recommend:

  • Regularly check the level of the technical fluid in the reservoir and monitor the tightness of the system, eliminating leaks in a timely manner.
  • Change the liquid as soon as it starts to darken.
  • Adjust the tension of the drive belt (if there are signs that the tension is loose).
  • Change filters at least 2 - 3 times a year.

By following these simple tips, you can extend the life of your power steering and significantly reduce your repair costs.

Exactly a week has passed since the car was delivered for warranty repair. I did not expect a call from the service on Saturday at 8 am, especially since on the eve of Thursday I was informed that spare parts would not arrive until the middle of next week. The manager said in a joyful voice that the car was ready - you could pick it up.

Actually, an hour later I was already in the salon. I signed a work order, which indicated the cost of repairs - 81,130 rubles (including work), went to pick up the car.

I found my horse in the service parking lot, sat down, started it, and lo and behold - the power steering no longer buzzes, and besides, it became a little easier. But another noise was discovered, which was not there before the car was delivered to the service. After another 30 minutes of communication with the servicemen, it turned out that the hydraulic compensator valve was stuck. “This happens if the car is not used for a long time,” they told me. As a result, the symptom was eliminated by overgassing within a few seconds.

If not for this unpleasant moment, then in general I am satisfied with the result of the warranty repair. All declared power steering units were replaced with new ones. I attach a photo report.

Attention! The topic, like everything in the technical section, is intended to identify problems and search for specific technical solutions and nuances associated with operation. Complaints about the wrong world order, bad GM, and a dastardly dealer, posts like “and I broke down” are equated to a flood, then according to the rules of the forum

The KAMAZ pump has shims that are placed under the pressure relief valve spring. We add a washer, we add a flow rate in the highways. We remove the washer - we reduce the consumption. The flow rate is set depending on the load on the front (steered) axle, i.e. from the working pressure in the system and from the location of the internal combustion engine. In buses on the KAMAZ chassis, the pump consumption is higher than that of the g / a of the same mass, since the internal combustion engine is at the back and the resistance and flexibility of the highways is greater. I have seen the device of some pumps and I have an idea of how to regulate the flow. The principle is the same for everyone. Only, Kruzovsky did not make out and photos of the disassembled pump, really, no. The only "BUT", adjustments can affect the sensitivity and effort on the steering wheel.

Each car has its own defects, or as the people say “disease”, the Chevrolet Cruze is no exception. One of the troubles that awaits the owners of Cruz is hum of the power steering (power steering), which is clearly audible in the passenger compartment with the engine running, and which intensifies when the steering wheel is turned. I would like to note that a visit to an official dealer with a complaint about the hum of the power steering will not solve the problem, since the design features of the Chevrolet Cruze power steering initially carried this trouble. The way out of this situation is the independent revision of the system.

Why is the power steering (power steering) of the Chevrolet Cruze buzzing?

First of all, I note that the hum does not come from the power steering pump, but from the pipes through which the fluid circulates. Some experts argue that the diameter of the tube does not correspond to the pressure that is created in it, therefore the tube begins to vibrate and emit a hum.

  • For the presented revision, you will need two damper bolts with rubber manufactured by GM Slovenia (GM # 9281374)

Image - DIY Chevrolet Cruze gur repair

Image - DIY Chevrolet Cruze gur repair Image - DIY Chevrolet Cruze gur repair
  • Rubber pads (will fit from an old bicycle tube)
  • Hi-Gear fluid "Sealant and tuning for power steering"

Instructions for finalizing the power steering system

  1. We unscrew the anthers, after which we tighten the acquired damper bolts
  2. At the joints of the power steering tubes, we make rubber gaskets
  3. Add Hi-Gear fluid "Sealant and tuning for power steering" to the power steering reservoir of the Chevrolet Cruze

As you can see, everything is corny and simple. After the performed operations, you can completely get rid of the unpleasant hum power steering Chevrolet Cruze and enjoy the silence in the car with the engine running.

Chevrolet Cruze. CHANGING THE FLUID AND BLEEDING THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM

According to the manufacturer's recommendation, the fluid in the power steering system is not changed during the entire service life of the vehicle. However, if the fluid in the reservoir is very dirty and darkened, then it should be replaced.

If the fluid is heavily soiled and darkened, check the serviceability of the power steering pump and steering gear. They may need to be repaired.

You will need: a container for the working fluid, a key "22", pliers.

To change the working fluid, follow these steps.

1. Raise the front of the car until the wheels are off the surface of the platform and place the car on the supports.

2. Remove the fuel pump fuse from the engine compartment mounting block.

3. Remove the power steering reservoir cap.

4.Loosen the clamp that secures the fluid supply hose to the power steering pump branch pipe by squeezing its bent ears with pliers. Slide the clamp over the hose and disconnect the hose from the nipple. Empty the container into a prepared container.

5. Remove the bolt-union fastening the high pressure pipeline to the pump union

power steering and disconnect the pipe.

6. Drain the fluid from the power steering system by turning on the starter two or three times and turning the steering wheel in both directions until it stops.

7. Connect the piping and niches to the power steering pump. fill the reservoir with fluid and bleed the air from the power steering system.

The need for pumping arises when air enters the hydraulic system during fluid replacement, repair work, or in case of leakage during operation. A sign of the presence of air in the system is the steering wheel wedging when trying to make a sharp turn. In addition, the pump makes an increased noise when the steering wheel is turned, and the fluid in the reservoir usually foams.

Perform the following steps to bleed the power steering system.

Air in the power steering system will cause premature failure of the power steering pump.

1. Fill the working fluid into the power steering system to the minimum level (mark "MI N")

a barrel of liquid in the reservoir of hydraulic power for steering control ”, p. 55).

2. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel five to six times in both directions until it stops.

While pumping, add fluid to the reservoir: its level should not fall below the "M 1 N" mark on the working fluid level indicator on the reservoir cap.

3. Turn the steering wheel from lock to lock in both directions until there are no air bubbles in the fluid poured into the power steering reservoir and the level of the working fluid in the reservoir no longer decreases.

Make sure that the power steering fluid level remains virtually unchanged when the steering wheel is turned to either side. If the fluid level changes by more than 10 mm and rises sharply when the engine is stopped, re-prime the system.

Drain the fluid from the power steering system of the Chevrolet Cruze by activating the starter two or three times and turning the steering wheel in both directions until it stops.

Connect the pipeline and hose to the power steering pump Chevrolet Cruze, fill the reservoir with fluid and remove air from the power steering system.

The need for pumping arises when air enters the hydraulic system during fluid replacement, repair work, or in case of leakage during operation.

A sign of air in the system is the steering wheel wedging when trying to make a sharp turn. In addition, the pump makes an increased noise when the steering wheel is turned, and the fluid in the reservoir usually foams.

To bleed the power steering system of the Chevrolet Cruze, do the following:

Fill the working fluid into the power steering system of the Chevrolet Cruze to the minimum level.

Start the engine and turn the steering wheel five to six times in both directions until it stops.

While pumping, add fluid to the reservoir: its level should not fall below the "MIN" mark on the working fluid level indicator on the reservoir cap.

Turn the steering wheel from lock to lock in both directions until there are air bubbles in the fluid poured into the power steering reservoir of the Chevrolet Cruze and the level of the working fluid in the reservoir ceases to decrease.

Make sure that the fluid level in the reservoir of the power steering (power steering) system of the Chevrolet Cruze practically does not change when the steering wheel is turned in both directions. If the fluid level changes by more than 10 mm and rises sharply when the engine is stopped, re-prime the system.

Replacing the rack and pinion steering gear Chevrolet Cruze

The steering rack mechanism of a Chevrolet Cruze car is removed for repair or replacement. However, keep in mind that the steering gear is an essential part of driving safety.

Checking and replacing the drive belt of the power steering pump Chevrolet Cruze

On Chevrolet Cruze 1.6L engines, the power steering pump is driven by a separate belt. According to the manufacturer's recommendation, the condition and tension of the power steering pump drive belt must be checked every 30 thousand km.

After 100 thousand kilometers or 10 years of operation (whichever comes first), the power steering pump drive belt should be replaced regardless of its condition.

To check the drive belt of the power steering pump for the Chevrolet Cruze, perform the following operations:

Check the belt tension. A correctly tensioned belt should rotate 90 ° from a finger force of 15-20 N (1.5-2 kgf). If, after checking, the belt tension does not correspond to the required conditions, it is necessary to replace the belt.

Check the condition of the belt by visual inspection. If the belt shows signs of severe wear or is oily, replace it.

To replace the drive belt of the power steering pump for the Chevrolet Cruze, perform the following operations:

Remove the power steering pump drive belt by cutting it with a knife.

Wipe the power steering pump pulleys and Chevrolet Cruze crankshaft pulleys with a clean rag to prevent slippage of the power steering pump drive belt during installation.

Install the power steering pump drive belt installer to the crankshaft pulley.

Slide a new belt over the Chevrolet Cruze power steering pump pulley and install it on the mounting fixture.

Place the transmission lever in neutral.

Turn the engine crankshaft clockwise by the bolt of fastening of its pulley, while guiding the belt into the groove of the pulley until the belt is put on the pulley (at this moment the belt tension will weaken).

Turn the crankshaft until the mounting tool is not caught by the belt and remove the tool.

Turn the crankshaft a few turns and check that the belt is correctly positioned in the grooves of the pulleys. Reinstall the belt if necessary.

Chevrolet Cruze Power Steering Pump Replacement
