Chevrolet Cruze has been on the market for a long time, but so far it has not been able to beat its predecessor, the Chevrolet Lacetti, in terms of sales. Despite this, the car has already found a large number of fans throughout the country. No wonder this model is still the leader in sales lists in the United States. But no one has canceled MOT even for the best-selling and popular cars, and the age of the oldest models already portends an early repair. Let us dwell in more detail on the repair of the Chevrolet Cruze power steering.

Complete diagnostics of power steering after removal and disassembly.

If repairs are made by us, then this is included in the cost of the work.

Complete diagnostics of the STEERING RACK.

If repairs are made by us, then this is included in the cost of the work.

Due to the relatively young age of the car, most power steering failures occur due to untimely maintenance, overly aggressive driving, and, of course, not the best road conditions. Here you can add low-quality maintenance, the use of low-quality consumables and fluids - all this, although not immediately, will spoil the condition of your machine's components.

The main types of breakdowns are typical for this class of car:

  • Untimely replacement of hydraulic fluid. One of the most relevant and frequent breakdowns. Untimely fluid changes, or in rare cases, dishonest maintenance at service stations result in expensive Chevrolet Cruze power steering repairs.
  • Steering rack play. No matter how hard you try, the mechanical wear of the rack parts will lead to a noticeable backlash, which will hasten to affect the accuracy of the steering.
  • The hum of the hydraulic booster. One of the "childhood" diseases of this model, which almost all owners face. It comes from the vibration of the tubes through which the hydraulic fluid passes. Official dealers, unfortunately, do not solve this problem.

Of course you can. If you have been working in a car service for a long time, you know the device of a car not from books, and you have been involved in complex car repairs more than once. Otherwise, it would be better to entrust this issue to specialists. Repairing the Chevrolet Cruze power steering (however, like any other car) is a very complicated process. In addition, in some cases it is simply impractical to carry out repairs, and it will be more profitable to immediately replace the part, which the master will be able to warn you about.

To drive a Chevrolet Cruze 1.6 (109 hp) and 1.8 (141 hp) car, a power steering (GUR) is used, which is part of the steering rack and consists of the following parts:

  • Expansion tank - a container with a sealed housing in which the working fluid is stored.
  • Power steering pump - pumps working fluid into the steering mechanism and is responsible for its circulation in the control system.
  • GUR tubes - designed to transport the working fluid.

The table lists the main signs of failure, which are often associated with a malfunctioning hydraulic booster, and also lists their causes:

Under ideal conditions, the working life of the power steering on the Chevrolet Cruze is 250 thousand kilometers. But with a too aggressive driving style, regular off-road driving and ignoring the need to undergo maintenance, the wear rate of the power steering increases significantly. Most often, the first signs of a breakdown are manifested in the fact that the power steering is buzzing or the steering wheel is turning hard.

Important: with severe wear of the power steering, the repair price may be so high that it will not be practical to repair it. If this is your situation, it would be more logical to buy a new pump (the article is indicated directly on the part).

In service centers, special stands are used to diagnose the hydraulic booster. But in fact, problems are easy to detect even without auxiliary equipment. To do this, just use the information from the table above.

To repair the power steering with your own hands, you will need the following tools:

  • Drill and drill 12 mm.
  • Sandpaper grit P1000 – P
  • Syringe.
  • key for 12.
  • Retaining ring puller.
  • Repair kit (washers, sealing rings, bearings, gasket, oil seal).

Whatever the problem is, to fix it, you will have to remove the pump. To do this, unscrew the mounting bolt, unscrew the lock nut and remove the drive belt. Use a syringe to draw fluid out of the system. Image - Do-it-yourself chevrolet cruz repair gur

After that, it is necessary to turn the steering wheel all the way and hold it in this position until the oil stops flowing.

The next step is disassembly. First of all, we disconnect the pipeline. For this you need:

  • Loosen the clamps that secure the hoses at the point of supply to the expansion tank.
  • Loosen the bolt holding the high pressure hose.
  • Disconnect tubes.

Next, unscrew the axial bolt and lock the pulley with a metal rod or screwdriver, then remove the nut that fixes the pulley, remove the pump and clean it of dirt.

After that, you need to unscrew the bolts that hold the back cover, pry it with a screwdriver and remove it. A puller is required to remove and replace the bearing. Image - Do-it-yourself chevrolet cruz repair gur

All power steering elements should be laid out on the table and defective. Parts showing signs of wear must be replaced.

Most often, to repair the power steering, it is enough to replace the repair kit. But sometimes during operation, irregularities form on the main elements. Examine the surfaces of these parts for burrs and notches. Particular attention should be paid to the condition of the shaft: the sides of the grooves must be sharp. You also need to study the inside of the cylinder - the surface should be flat. If it is wavy, then the problem is in the cylinder.

Small burrs and irregularities are smoothed out with sandpaper. To eliminate more serious deformations, a grinder will be required. If it is not there, you can construct an analogue using a drill, a thick drill and a skin.

The durability of the power steering and steering rack depends on how strictly the operating rules are observed. Experts recommend:

  • Regularly check the level of technical fluid in the tank and monitor the tightness of the system, eliminating leaks in a timely manner.
  • Change the fluid as soon as it starts to darken.
  • Adjust the tension of the drive belt (if there are signs indicating that the tension is loose).
  • Replace filters at least 2-3 times a year.

By following these simple tips, you can extend the life of the power steering and significantly reduce the cost of repairs.

It's been exactly a week since the car was handed over for warranty repairs. I did not expect a call from the service on Saturday at 8 am, especially since on the eve of Thursday I was informed that the spare parts would arrive no earlier than the middle of next week. With a joyful voice, the manager said that the car is ready - you can pick it up.

Actually, an hour later I was already in the cabin. I signed an order-order, which indicated the cost of repairs - 81,130 rubles (including work), went to pick up the car.

I found my horse in a service parking lot, sat down, started it, and lo and behold, the power steering is no longer buzzing, and besides, it has become a little easier. But another noise was discovered, which was not there before the car was handed over to the service. After another 30 minutes of communication with the servicemen, it turned out that the hydraulic compensator valve was stuck. “This is the case if the car is not used for a long time,” they told me. As a result, the symptom was eliminated by regassing within a few seconds.

If not for this unpleasant moment, then in general I am satisfied with the result of the warranty repair. All declared power steering units were replaced with new ones. I am attaching a photo report.

Attention! The topic, like everything in the technical section, is intended to identify problems and search for specific technical solutions and nuances related to operation. Complaints about the wrong world order, bad GM, and a mean dealer, posts like “and it broke with me” are equated with a flood, further according to the rules of the forum

After replacing the pump and hoses, a month passed. During this time, the car ran 1200 km.

The KAMAZ pump has shims that are placed under the pressure reducing valve spring. We add a washer, we add an expense in highways. We remove the washer - reduce the flow. The consumption is set depending on the load on the front (steered) axle, i.е. on the working pressure in the system and on the location of the internal combustion engine. For buses on the KAMAZ chassis, the pump flow rate is greater than for a truck of the same mass, since the internal combustion engine is at the rear and the resistance and compliance of the lines is greater. I had to see the device of some pumps and I have an idea how to regulate the flow. The principle is the same for everyone. Only, Kruzovsky did not disassemble and there are really no pictures of the disassembled pump. The only “BUT”, adjustments can affect the sensitivity and effort on the steering wheel.

Each car has its own defects or, as the people say, “diseases”, the Chevrolet Cruze is no exception. One of the troubles that await the owners of the Cruise is power steering rumble (GUR), which is clearly audible in the passenger compartment with the engine running, and which intensifies when the steering wheel is turned. I would like to note that a visit to an official dealer with a complaint about the power steering rumble will not solve the problem, since the design features of the Chevrolet Cruze power steering initially carried this trouble. The way out of this situation is to independently refine the system.

Why is the power steering (GUR) of the Chevrolet Cruze buzzing

First of all, I note that the hum does not come from the power steering pump, but from the tubes through which the liquid circulates. Some experts argue that the diameter of the tube does not match the pressure that is created in it, so the tube begins to vibrate and make a hum.

  • For the modification presented, you will need two damper bolts with rubber manufactured by GM Slovenia (GM # 9281374)

Image - Do-it-yourself chevrolet cruz repair gur

Image - Do-it-yourself chevrolet cruz repair gur Image - Do-it-yourself chevrolet cruz repair gur
  • Rubber pads (suitable from an old bike inner tube)
  • Hi-Gear fluid “Sealant and tuning for power steering”

Instructions for finalizing the power steering system

  1. We unscrew the anthers, and then we twist the acquired damper bolts
  2. We make rubber gaskets at the junctions of the hydraulic booster tubes
  3. Add Hi-Gear fluid “Sealant and tuning for power steering” to the Chevrolet Cruze power steering reservoir

As you can see, everything is simple. After the performed operations, you can completely get rid of the unpleasant hum power steering Chevrolet Cruze and enjoy the silence in the car when the engine is running.

Chevrolet Cruze. FLUID REPLACEMENT AND BLEEDING THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM

According to the manufacturer's recommendation, the fluid in the power steering system is not changed during the entire life of the vehicle. However, if the fluid in the tank is heavily contaminated and darkened, then it should be replaced.

In case of severe contamination and darkening of the liquid, check the serviceability of the power steering pump and steering gear. Perhaps they need to be repaired.

You will need: a container for the working fluid, a “22” key, pliers.

To replace the working fluid, perform the following operations.

1. Raise the front of the car until the wheels are off the surface of the site and place the car on supports.

2. Remove the fuel pump fuse from the mounting block in the engine compartment.

3. Turn away a stopper of a tank of the hydraulic booster of a steering.

4.Loosen the clamp securing the fluid supply hose to the power steering pump nozzle by squeezing its bent ears with pliers. Slide the clamp along the hose and disconnect the hose from the nozzle. Drain the liquid from the tank into a previously prepared container.

5. Turn out a bolt fitting of fastening of the pipeline of a high pressure to the union of the pump

power steering and disconnect the pipeline.

6. Drain the fluid from the power steering system by turning on the starter two or three times and turning the steering wheel in both directions until it stops.

7. Attach the pipeline and niches to the power steering pump. fill the fluid reservoir and bleed the air from the power steering system.

The need for pumping arises when air enters the hydraulic system during a fluid change, repair work, or in case of leakage during operation. A sign of the presence of air in the system is the wedging of the steering wheel on the wheels when trying to make a sharp turn. In addition, the pump makes an increased noise when the steering wheel is turned, and the liquid in the tank usually foams.

To bleed the power steering system, perform the following steps.

The presence of air in the power steering system leads to premature failure of the power steering pump.

1. Fill the working fluid into the hydraulic booster system to the minimum level (“MI N” mark)

lateral fluids in the hydraulic power reservoir 10 for steering”, p. 55).

2. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel five or six times in both directions until it stops.

During pumping, add fluid to the tank: its level should not fall below the “M 1 N” mark on the working fluid level indicator on the tank cap.

3. Turn the steering wheel from lock to lock in both directions until there are no air bubbles in the fluid filled into the power steering reservoir, and the level of the working fluid in the reservoir stops decreasing.

Make sure that the fluid level in the power steering system reservoir does not change significantly when the steering wheel is turned in both directions. If the fluid level changes by more than 10 mm, and rises sharply when the engine is stopped, re-bleed the system.

If the rail malfunction becomes obvious to the master, he disassembles it for troubleshooting and possible reassembly. If the corrosion of the rack shaft and other elements is not critical, it is possible to restore the rack of your Chevrolet Cruze. If not, then it would be better to change it.

If the replacement alternative is feasible, then the master makes an estimate for spare parts and agrees on the cost of repairing the rail. How much the entire repair will cost is directly affected by the rail bulkhead and the number of new spare parts. The very same price for the removal and installation of the steering rack on the Chevrolet Cruze is fixed.

Chevrolet Cruze rail adjustment is an important stage of repair, which can be considered as an independent service. For example, if the rail on your Chevrolet Cruze is loose and, as a result, in some cases it can simply be adjusted.

But it is important to know that the rail adjustment is required for the Chevrolet Cruze and after its removal and installation. Especially after renovations.

Before replacing the power steering fluid with a Chevrolet Cruze, it is important to check the tightness of the power steering system, and if necessary, replace the oil seals and rail seals, as well as install new SHVD instead of damaged ones, if any.

Our masters always check the power steering system for leaks. In addition, we will definitely check whether it is really necessary to change the power steering oil. If replacement is necessary, we will select the correct technical fluid, taking into account the manufacturer's recommendations and our own experience.

Replacing the working fluid and pumping the power steering system of the Chevrolet Cruze power steering

According to the manufacturer's recommendation, the fluid in the Chevrolet Cruze power steering system is not changed during the entire period of operation. However, if the fluid in the tank is heavily contaminated and darkened, then it should be replaced.

In case of severe contamination and darkening of the liquid, check the serviceability of the power steering pump and the Chevrolet Cruze steering gear. Perhaps they need to be repaired.

To replace the working fluid of the Chevrolet Cruze power steering system, perform the following operations:

Raise the front of the car until the wheels are off the surface of the site and place the car on supports.

Remove the fuel pump fuse from the mounting block in the engine compartment.

Unscrew the cap of the power steering reservoir of the Chevrolet Cruze.

Loosen the clamp securing the fluid supply hose to the Chevrolet Cruze power steering pump by squeezing its bent ears with pliers. Slide the clamp along the hose and disconnect the hose from the nozzle. Drain the liquid from the tank into a previously prepared container.

Turn out a bolt union of fastening of the pipeline of a high pressure to the union of the pump of the hydraulic booster of a steering of Chevrolet Cruze and disconnect the pipeline.

Drain the fluid from the Chevrolet Cruze power steering system by turning on the starter two or three times and turning the steering wheel in both directions until it stops.

Connect the pipeline and hose to the Chevrolet Cruze power steering pump, fill the reservoir with fluid and bleed the air from the power steering system.

The need for pumping arises when air enters the hydraulic system during a fluid change, repair work, or in case of leakage during operation.

A sign of the presence of air in the system is the wedging of the steering wheel when trying to make a sharp turn. In addition, the pump makes an increased noise when the steering wheel is turned, and the liquid in the tank usually foams.

To bleed the Chevrolet Cruze power steering system, perform the following operations:

Fill the Chevrolet Cruze power steering system with hydraulic fluid to the minimum level.

Start the engine and turn the steering wheel five or six times in both directions until it stops.

During pumping, add fluid to the tank: its level should not fall below the “MIN” mark on the working fluid level indicator on the tank cap.

Turn the steering wheel from lock to lock in both directions until there are no air bubbles in the liquid poured into the Chevrolet Cruze power steering reservoir and the level of the working fluid in the reservoir stops decreasing.

Make sure that the fluid level in the reservoir of the Chevrolet Cruze power steering system (GUR) practically does not change when the steering wheel is turned in both directions. If the fluid level changes by more than 10 mm, and rises sharply when the engine is stopped, re-bleed the system.

Chevrolet Cruze rack and pinion replacement

The steering rack mechanism of a Chevrolet Cruze car is removed for repair or replacement. However, keep in mind that the steering mechanism is the most important element in ensuring traffic safety.

Unskilled repairs to the Chevrolet Cruze steering rack mechanism can lead to serious consequences, so if necessary, have it repaired only in a specialized workshop or replace it with a new one.

Disconnect the wire from the "minus" terminal of the battery.

Install the car on a viewing ditch.

Set the steering wheel to the straight ahead position.

Install wheel chocks under the rear wheels, hang out the front of the Chevrolet Cruze. Remove the front wheels.

Disconnect the outer tie rod ends from the steering knuckle arms.

In the passenger compartment, under the pedal assembly, unscrew the coupling bolt of the terminal connection of the lower cardan joint to the shaft of the Chevrolet Cruze steering rack mechanism.

Remove the engine mudguards. Remove the intake pipe

Unscrew the tube retainer bolt, disconnect the tubes from the Chevrolet Cruze steering rack mechanism and drain the working fluid from the power steering system into a previously prepared container or plug it with plugs.

While holding the upper stabilizer link pin from turning, unscrew the nut and remove the upper stabilizer link pin from the front suspension strut bracket.

Turn out four bolts of fastening of a support of an arm of a radiator (on two on the right and left side).

Turn out a nut of a coupling bolt of fastening of forward and back support of a suspension bracket of the power unit to a subframe. Turn out bolts of fastening of a subframe to a body.

Lower the rear of the subframe by 5-7 mm so that you have access to the nuts of the two studs securing the steering gear to the subframe.

Unscrew the nuts of the two studs securing the Chevrolet Cruze steering rack mechanism to the front suspension subframe on the left and right.

Check and, if necessary, adjust the angles of the front wheels.

Checking and replacing the power steering pump drive belt Chevrolet Cruze

On 1.6 liter Chevrolet Cruze engines, the power steering pump is driven by a separate belt. According to the manufacturer's recommendation, the condition and tension of the power steering pump drive belt must be checked every 30 thousand km.

After 100 thousand kilometers or 10 years of operation (whichever comes first), the power steering pump drive belt should be replaced, regardless of its condition.

To check the Chevrolet Cruze power steering pump drive belt, perform the following operations:

Check belt tension. A correctly tensioned belt should rotate 90° from the force of the fingers 15-20 N (1.5-2 kgf). If, after checking, the belt tension does not meet the required conditions, the belt must be replaced.

Check the condition of the belt by visual inspection. If the belt shows signs of severe wear or is oily, replace it.

To replace the Chevrolet Cruze power steering pump drive belt, perform the following operations:

Remove the power steering pump drive belt by cutting it with a knife.

Wipe the Chevrolet Cruze power steering pump and crankshaft pulleys with a clean rag to prevent slippage of the power steering pump drive belt during installation.

Install the power steering pump belt mounting tool to the crankshaft pulley.

Slide the new belt onto the Chevrolet Cruze power steering pump pulley and install it on the mounting tool.

Set the gear lever to neutral position.

Turn the engine crankshaft clockwise by the pulley mounting bolt, while guiding the belt into the pulley stream until the belt is put on the pulley (at this point, the belt tension will loosen).

Rotate the crankshaft until the mounting tool is not caught by the belt, and remove the tool.

Turn the crankshaft a few turns and check that the belt is correctly positioned in the pulley grooves. Reinstall the belt if necessary.

Chevrolet Cruze Power Steering Pump Replacement

If the pump (Fig. 25) fails, replace it as an assembly, as repairs require special tools and equipment.

Rice. 25. Power steering pump Chevrolet Cruze

1 - pump pulley; 2 – a hole of a bolt of fastening of the pump; 3 - pump housing; 4 - rear cover of the pump housing; 5 - branch pipe of the high pressure pipeline; 6 - branch pipe of the liquid supply hose

  3. We add Hi-Gear fluid “Sealant and tuning for power steering” to the Chevrolet Cruze power steering reservoir

As you can see, everything is simple. After the performed operations, you can completely get rid of the unpleasant hum power steering Chevrolet Cruze and enjoy the silence in the car when the engine is running.
