Toyota Highlander engine repair. Initially, the car came with the problem of antifreeze leakage from the rear of the cylinder head in the area of the intake manifold. The owner had a preliminary suspicion of what the malfunction was. After the diagnosis, the diagnosis was confirmed.
The problem was obvious due to its systematic nature in 2AZ-FE engines of a certain year of manufacture. I talked about this problem in detail in the next article. After consulting with the owner, it was decided to overhaul the engine, along the way, radically eliminating the problem with the thread of the cylinder head bolts, so as not to return to it.
Before the overhaul, an approximate cost forecast was drawn up and agreed with the owner of the car.
The engine on this car is removed assembled with an automatic transmission. Before removal, all service fluids were drained, except for the oil in the automatic transmission. The braid, all the pipes, etc. were dismantled from the passenger compartment, after which the subframe with the engine and automatic transmission is lowered down.
We dismantle the wiring braid from the engine and all attachments.
So, after dismantling all attachments, we got to the place of direct leakage of antifreeze from the engine. Antifreeze flows from under the junction of the cylinder head and the cylinder block itself, since the thread of the cylinder head bolts in this part is pulled out. This happened due to a technical flaw in this engine, namely the long thread of the cylinder head bolts.
The photo clearly shows how the thread from the block remained on the cylinder head bolt... In the photo on the right, the attachment points of three bolts are highlighted, in which, first of all, the thread pulls out. This is due to the high thermal load, since these bolts do not have one of the sides touching the outer wall of the block, which cools the block in contact with the environment. The second factor that aggravates the thermal stress on the threads is vibration isolation, which tightly closes this area between the block and the intake manifold, which weakens the cooling of the block wall.

We disconnect the engine from the automatic transmission and install it on the stand. Next, we dismantle the cylinder head. Three central bolts on the back side were unscrewed by hand, hThis indicates damage to the threads of the bolts.
We dismantle the small and large engine sump and reach the piston group. As you can see in the photo, the engine is quite clean, which indicates a timely oil change. No carbon deposits were found. We take out the piston group and the crankshaft from the block bed.
After disassembling the engine, we proceed to the bulkhead of the cylinder head. First of all, the cylinder head is checked for deformations. If the cylinder head has led, then it is mandatory sent to the grinding of the plane. We grind the outlet and inlet valves. If there are sinks on the valves, they are replaced. After lapping the valves, the cylinder head is washed from the remains of abrasive and the valve stem seals (oil seals) are changed, after which the valves are assembled. After assembling the valves, the thermal clearances of the valves are adjusted. If necessary, change the adjusting glasses.
Now we turn to the restoration of the thread of the bolts, fastening the cylinder head. First of all, we cut the M14x1.5 thread for our screwdrivers. We install the screwdrivers, having previously treated them with an anaerobic thread sealant. We set the screwdrivers to a certain depth from the upper edge of the block.
In our case, we used different cylinder head bolts. Their fundamental difference from the standard ones in the barrel diameter is that it is thinner, due to which the bolts have more progressive tensile characteristics than the standard ones. This allowed us to set the screwdriver to a shallower depth.
After installing the screwdrivers, we turn to the piston group.Before installing the pistons, they are washed and cleaned of carbon deposits. We install a new set of piston rings on the piston and assemble the piston group and KShM.
We assemble the pallet and install the balancing shafts. Now let's move on to the top. Install the cylinder head gasket.
We install the cylinder head on the block and proceed to broaching the cylinder head bolts.
We install the camshafts and assemble the gas distribution mechanism (timing).
Install the front timing cover, then the pan cover and valve cover. We install part of the attachments and the motor is ready for installation on the car's subframe.
We install the engine on a subframe and assemble the remaining attachments. After a second, thorough check for defects. The subframe with the engine is installed in the car, after which all communication systems of the engine are installed. Service fluids are filled in and the engine is started. After the test check, a second check is carried out for leaks and extraneous noise. Then the car is ready for use. This is the work on repair of the Toyota Highlander engine finished.
