Disconnect the ground wire from the battery. Remove the corrugated hose from the hot air intake pipe.
Using the "13" key, unscrew the two nuts securing the starter heat shield.
Using the "10" key, unscrew the bolt securing the screen to the bracket of the right support of the power unit and remove the heat shield.
Using the "13" key, unscrew the three bolts attaching the starter to the clutch housing.
By sliding the starter forward.
… We disconnect the control wire from the output of the traction relay (the coolant hose has been removed for clarity).
By sliding the protective rubber cap, ...
… With the key "13" we unscrew the nut securing the "positive" wire (from the battery) and remove its tip from the stud of the traction relay. We take out the starter up between the front pipe and the clutch housing.
We clean the starter from dirt and set it on the workbench.
Using the "13" wrench, weaken the tightening of the nut securing the wire to the traction relay ...
... and disconnect the tip of the wire.
To check the traction relay ...
... apply +12 V voltage to the relay output, ...

In this case, for a working relay, the armature should push the overrunning clutch into the window of the front cover, and the contact bolts should close. We replace the faulty traction relay with a new one.

Connecting an ohmmeter in turn to the terminals of the stator windings, we check them for a short circuit to the case and an interturn short circuit.
When doing this, make sure that the free winding leads are insulated from the case.
Prying off with a screwdriver, remove the retaining ring.
Remove the washer from the shaft.
Using the "10" wrench, unscrew the two tie bolts ...
Disconnecting the parts of the starter ...

By external inspection we check the condition of the collector and the windings. Charring of the windings is not allowed. If the collector is slightly burned, we clean its plates with a fine abrasive cloth. In case of severe burning and wear, it is better to replace the anchor. Seizure and enveloping of metal from the bearings on the journals of the armature shaft are eliminated with fine sandpaper.
We check the armature windings for a short circuit with an ohmmeter.
We replace the defective anchor.
Remove the rubber plug from the drive cover.
Remove the adjusting washer from the armature axis.
We spread out the axis of the lever.
… And take out the anchor with the drive.
Prying with a screwdriver, remove the drive lever.
The drive gear should easily rotate in one direction and not rotate in the other, not have chips and nicks on the lead-in of the teeth. We replace the worn gear wheel or the faulty freewheel clutch as an assembly.
Leaning the anchor shaft on a wooden block, knock the stop ring off the retaining ring through the "14" key.
Prying off with a screwdriver, remove the retaining ring.
Remove the stop ring and the overrunning clutch assembly with the drive gear from the shaft.
We carry out the assembly of the starter in the reverse order.
When installing the stop ring on the retaining ring, it is convenient to tighten it with sliding pliers.

Used, discounted cars of this model have already appeared on the market.
There is a contradictory opinion about the IZH-2126 family, which includes the new "heel". There are many complaints about the low quality of components and design flaws, which, however, the plant is struggling with. On the other hand, a cheap car, not devoid of merit, is forgiven a lot.
The cabin of the new "heel", like all domestic pickups, is a fragment of the body of a basic passenger car, and therefore has retained almost all the features of the driver's workplace for the IZH-2126. The new IZH is wider than the Moskvich -412, and the cabin of the cargo modification is more spacious than that of the previous “heel”: there is much more space at the shoulder level of the driver and passenger.
The mutual arrangement of the steering wheel, seat and pedals as a whole causes less complaints from the drivers than in the VIS pickup based on the Zhiguli. For example, it is believed that the angle of inclination of the steering column and the distance of the pedals from the seat of the Izhevsk car were chosen more successfully.
At the same time, some drivers complain about the pedal assembly slightly shifted towards the middle of the car. On the engine shield to the left of the clutch pedal, there is a "bump". Because of it, the pedal has to be "recessed" into the hole. This is especially felt in winter when you ride in heavy shoes with wide soles. The edge of the boot "clings" to the bump, and sometimes you just "undershoot" the grip. The old "heel" had nothing of the kind. Fortunately, the clutch is still hydraulic, you can crawl under the car and lengthen the rod that pushes the piston of the slave cylinder. The clutch will begin to disengage at the beginning of the pedal travel, even before the driver's boot reaches the ill-fated bump.
The long gear lever is close to the steering wheel so you don't have to stretch your hand too far. In terms of the accuracy of the gear engagement mechanism, the new IZH resembles the Volga GAZ-24.
The steering wheel is very light thanks to the rack and pinion mechanism. For a delivery vehicle, which has to maneuver a lot in narrow passages, this is a great advantage. Due to the large steering angle of the steering wheels, the maneuverability of the IZH-2717 remained at the same level as that of the smaller IZH-2715.
Like all pickups, the cab of the new Izhevsk has one drawback and one advantage. The "downside" is that the seat backs rest against the rear wall, which partially limits the adjustment of the chair. True, only tall drivers will notice this. And the "plus" is a more efficient "stove" than that of a passenger car. It heats a smaller cabin space. The heater fan, even when switched on at the first speed, cleans the fogged windshield of IZH in a matter of seconds.
The problem with modern bodies is that because of the curved side windows in the rain, water enters the open side window. Therefore, it is useful to put plastic canopies on IZH-2717 windows. They also contribute to improved cab ventilation.In bad weather with them, you can safely lower both side windows by a few centimeters: it does not blow, and the hood will appear.
It is important for a pickup driver to be able to maneuver "on the mirrors". The standard IZH-2126 mirrors, installed on a pickup, are sufficient in size for a passenger car, but too small for IZH-2717. The solution is simple: buy and install exterior mirrors from a Gazelle or some other truck. In general, the IZH-2717 cab in terms of comfort is comparable to the cab of the recently produced Moskvich-2335 pickup based on the 41st.
The passenger car IZH-2126 has a spring rear suspension, and a pickup has a spring suspension. It is believed to be tougher. But either because of the elongated wheelbase, or because of the rather soft springs, the empty IZH-2717 is not inferior to a passenger car in terms of smoothness. On the other hand, in a loaded car, the springs bend noticeably, and the body tends to "sit" on the bridge beam. Those who need to systematically transport heavy loads are tempted to reinforce the springs with additional sheets, as did the owners of the old "Moskvich" and "Volga".
The IZH-2715 had a rear door that consisted of two vertical doors. In the new model, for the sake of unification of a pickup and a van, the side flips down, and the upper half rises up. The rather massive upper part is lifted by two gas stops. The fragile brackets for their attachment over time simply come off the body. They can be returned to their place only by welding, preferably with reinforcement. Worst of all, if the bracket of one of the supports comes off when a person is standing under the open door. The second support alone will hardly hold the door leaf. But when both supports are in place, no rain will interfere with unloading the luggage. Only a tall person will have to bend down.
The sharp handle that opens the rear door evokes nostalgia among connoisseurs: it first appeared on the Moskvich-433 van in 1966, it was used for many years on AZLK station wagons and Izhevsk “heels”. The rods and the rear door lock mechanism, located on the back of the upper sash, are not covered by any pads or covers. This makes them easier to lubricate.
The lower door leaf swings down like a side of a truck 180 °. This is good as it does not interfere with loading. And at the same time, this does not allow the use of the side tilted by 90 ° as an additional support when transporting long items. However, many solutions to this problem are used on the same trucks. For example, you can attach hooks or chains with loops to keep the bead flush with the floor of the platform.
Interestingly, when loading and unloading, it is not always necessary to fold the lower sash. Sometimes it is enough to open the top one, and a small-sized cargo can be simply moved over a closed side. When the vehicle is moving, the tailgate becomes heavily and quickly dirty. This is easy to deal with. It is enough to put on the body under the side, in full width, a simple apron - a piece of rubber mat, a sheet of linoleum. Sometimes such an apron is recruited from several wheel mudguards.
The area of the platform and the useful capacity of the body of the IZH-2717 have become significantly larger than that of its predecessor. The top of the van can be removed easily by unscrewing four bolts. Only now the massive metal superstructure cannot be removed without an assistant. After dismantling the booth, it will be possible to use the folding sides.
On a cargo IZH, a 1.7-liter Ufa engine is found more often than a VAZ-2106 engine. It is considered to be more "high-torque" than the "Zhigulevsky", it requires less adjustments. Overhaul of the UZAM engine, when it comes to it, is also easier.
At the same time, this motor has its drawbacks. For example, it is more prone to overheating. This was especially evident in cars manufactured before August 2003. The location of the cooling system pipes was unsuccessful, and steam locks often formed. The Ufa plant has corrected its mistake by introducing a new system of pipes. It can be easily installed on older engines.
But in the secondary market there are thousands of cars with an old-style system. It is quite possible that the previous owners of the car repeatedly “boiled” the engine. This is dangerous, as the aluminum block and cylinder head could be deformed from overheating. There are cases when a used IZH had to repeatedly change the gasket between the head and the block. Replacing the head, and even more so the block, will cost a pretty penny.
The cars of the IZH-2126 family received an original five-speed gearbox, which replaced the outdated Moskvich gearbox. We often hear that it is not very reliable: a major breakdown, after which a "bulkhead" of the box will be required, may follow after 40-50 thousand km. However, repairmen argue that it is not the plant that is often to blame for this, but the illiterate operation of the machine.
The owners of cheap cars are glad that they “don't need” expensive branded oil. The cheapest "transmission" is poured into the IZH box. This is a serious mistake. The IZH-2126 gearbox uses needle bearings with plastic cages. Due to poor-quality lubrication, the separators collapse and the needles spill out. The box still works for some time, but it starts to make more and more noise. She is just waiting for the car to skid in mud or snow, or, on the contrary, it can accelerate up to 120 kilometers per hour on the highway. So while the box is fresh, experts recommend pouring really high-quality, possibly imported oil into it, and then monitor its level. Expensive? But then you will save on repairing the box.
By the way, box repair is not a disaster. When it is removed, unlike the Zhiguli, the clutch housing remains on the car. The box itself seems complicated only at first glance. According to experienced mechanics, it is very easy to repair.
Many drivers complain that the new IZHs have a noisy rear axle gearbox. Rumor has it that sometimes in cars with low mileage, the gearbox simply jams. According to the plant workers, this problem has already been solved, but it is unlikely that such "solved" cars have already reached the secondary market. And since we got a car with a "vocal" axle, experts recommend, first of all, to adjust the unit according to the instructions. Then, as in the box, you need to fill in high-quality expensive oil. Even if you cannot completely defeat the noise, you will avoid complete failure of the gearbox.
The cardan transmission of the new IZH inherited from the Zhiguli a rubber coupling and an intermediate support - two extra sources of damage that IZH-2715 did not have. They die especially quickly in those who like to climb off-road and cling to the ground with their "belly". To prolong the life of the promoter, it is recommended to lubricate the bearing more frequently.
It is believed that the new IZHs have many parts that are unified with other domestic cars, and the original spare parts are no longer in short supply. But still there are noticeably fewer shops selling Izhevsk components than those specializing in parts for VAZ / VIS and Gazelle cars.
This is all that we managed to find out from the drivers and repairmen about the new Izhevsk "heels". But life does not stop, and the plant, which was almost standing still recently, is confidently increasing the production of cars. True, the production of cargo versions has decreased slightly, which is not of fundamental importance. The Izhevsk "heel" of the second generation IZH-2717 replaced the famous IZH-2715 several years ago. Gradually, it becomes the most common car of this class in Russia, since the scale of its production is much larger than that of VIS pickups. Used, discounted cars of this model have already appeared on the market.
There is a contradictory opinion about the IZH-2126 family, which includes the new "heel". There are many complaints about the low quality of components and design flaws, which, however, the plant is struggling with. On the other hand, a cheap car, not devoid of merit, is forgiven a lot.
The cabin of the new "heel", like all domestic pickups, is a fragment of the body of a basic passenger car, and therefore has retained almost all the features of the driver's workplace for the IZH-2126. The new IZH is wider than the Moskvich -412, and the cabin of the cargo modification is more spacious than that of the previous “heel”: there is much more space at the shoulder level of the driver and passenger.
The mutual arrangement of the steering wheel, seat and pedals as a whole causes less complaints from the drivers than in the VIS pickup based on the Zhiguli. For example, it is believed that the angle of inclination of the steering column and the distance of the pedals from the seat of the Izhevsk car were chosen more successfully.
At the same time, some drivers complain about the pedal assembly slightly shifted towards the middle of the car. On the engine shield to the left of the clutch pedal, there is a "bump". Because of it, the pedal has to be "recessed" into the hole. This is especially felt in winter when you ride in heavy shoes with wide soles. The edge of the boot "clings" to the bump, and sometimes you just "undershoot" the grip. The old "heel" had nothing of the kind. Fortunately, the clutch is still hydraulic, you can crawl under the car and lengthen the rod that pushes the piston of the slave cylinder. The clutch will begin to disengage at the beginning of the pedal travel, even before the driver's boot reaches the ill-fated bump.
The long gear lever is close to the steering wheel so you don't have to stretch your hand too far. In terms of the accuracy of the gear engagement mechanism, the new IZH resembles the Volga GAZ-24.
The steering wheel is very light thanks to the rack and pinion mechanism. For a delivery vehicle, which has to maneuver a lot in narrow passages, this is a great advantage. Due to the large steering angle of the steering wheels, the maneuverability of the IZH-2717 remained at the same level as that of the smaller IZH-2715.
Like all pickups, the cab of the new Izhevsk has one drawback and one advantage. The "downside" is that the seat backs rest against the rear wall, which partially limits the adjustment of the chair. True, only tall drivers will notice this. And the "plus" is a more efficient "stove" than that of a passenger car. It heats a smaller cabin space. The heater fan, even when switched on at the first speed, clears the fogged windshield of IZH in a matter of seconds.
The problem with modern bodies is that because of the curved side windows in the rain, water gets into the open side window. Therefore, it is useful to put plastic canopies on IZH-2717 windows. They also contribute to improved cab ventilation. In bad weather with them, you can safely lower both side windows by a few centimeters: it does not blow, and the hood will appear.
It is important for a pickup driver to be able to maneuver "on the mirrors". The standard IZH-2126 mirrors, installed on a pickup, are sufficient in size for a passenger car, but too small for IZH-2717. The solution is simple: buy and install exterior mirrors from a Gazelle or some other truck. In general, the IZH-2717 cab in terms of comfort is comparable to the cab of the recently produced Moskvich-2335 pickup based on the 41st.
The passenger car IZH-2126 has a spring rear suspension, and a pickup has a spring suspension. It is believed to be tougher. But either because of the elongated wheelbase, or because of the rather soft springs, the empty IZH-2717 is not inferior to a passenger car in terms of smoothness.On the other hand, in a loaded car, the springs bend noticeably, and the body tends to "sit" on the bridge beam. Those who need to systematically transport heavy loads are tempted to reinforce the springs with additional sheets, as did the owners of the old "Moskvich" and "Volga".
The IZH-2715 had a rear door that consisted of two vertical doors. In the new model, for the sake of unification of a pickup and a van, the side flips down, and the upper half rises up. The rather massive upper part is lifted by two gas stops. The fragile brackets for their attachment over time simply come off the body. They can be returned to their place only by welding, preferably with reinforcement. Worst of all, if the bracket of one of the supports comes off when a person is standing under the open door. The second support alone will hardly hold the door leaf. But when both supports are in place, no rain will interfere with unloading the luggage. Only a tall person will have to bend down.
The sharp handle that opens the rear door evokes nostalgia among connoisseurs: it first appeared on the Moskvich-433 van in 1966, it was used for many years on AZLK station wagons and Izhevsk “heels”. The rods and the rear door lock mechanism, located on the back of the upper sash, are not covered by any pads or covers. This makes them easier to lubricate.
The lower door leaf swings down like a side of a truck 180 °. This is good as it does not interfere with loading. And at the same time, this does not allow the use of the side tilted by 90 ° as an additional support when transporting long items. However, many solutions to this problem are used on the same trucks. For example, you can attach hooks or chains with loops to keep the bead flush with the floor of the platform.
Interestingly, when loading and unloading, it is not always necessary to fold the lower sash. Sometimes it is enough to open the top one, and a small-sized cargo can be simply moved over a closed side. When the vehicle is moving, the tailgate becomes heavily and quickly dirty. This is easy to deal with. It is enough to put on the body under the side, in full width, a simple apron - a piece of rubber mat, a sheet of linoleum. Sometimes such an apron is recruited from several wheel mudguards.
The area of the platform and the useful capacity of the body of the IZH-2717 have become significantly larger than that of its predecessor. The top of the van can be removed easily by unscrewing four bolts. Only now the massive metal superstructure cannot be removed without an assistant. After dismantling the booth, it will be possible to use the folding sides.
On a cargo IZH, a 1.7-liter Ufa engine is found more often than a VAZ-2106 engine. It is considered to be more "high-torque" than the "Zhigulevsky", it requires less adjustments. Overhaul of the UZAM engine, when it comes to it, is also easier.
At the same time, this motor has its drawbacks. For example, it is more prone to overheating. This was especially evident in cars manufactured before August 2003. The location of the cooling system pipes was unsuccessful, and steam locks often formed. The Ufa plant has corrected its mistake by introducing a new system of pipes. It can be easily installed on older engines.
But in the secondary market there are thousands of cars with an old-style system. It is quite possible that the previous owners of the car repeatedly “boiled” the engine. This is dangerous, as the aluminum block and cylinder head could be deformed from overheating. There are cases when a used IZH had to repeatedly change the gasket between the head and the block. Replacing the head, and even more so the block, will cost a pretty penny.
The cars of the IZH-2126 family received an original five-speed gearbox, which replaced the outdated Moskvich gearbox. We often hear that it is not very reliable: a major breakdown, after which a "bulkhead" of the box will be required, may follow after 40-50 thousand km. However, repairmen argue that it is not the plant that is often to blame for this, but the illiterate operation of the machine.
The owners of cheap cars are glad that they “don't need” expensive branded oil. The cheapest "transmission" is poured into the IZH box. This is a serious mistake. The IZH-2126 gearbox uses needle bearings with plastic cages. Due to poor-quality lubrication, the separators collapse and the needles spill out. The box still works for some time, but it starts to make more and more noise. She is just waiting for the car to skid in mud or snow, or, on the contrary, it can accelerate up to 120 kilometers per hour on the highway. So while the box is fresh, experts recommend pouring really high-quality, possibly imported oil into it, and then monitor its level. Expensive? But then you will save on box repair.
By the way, box repair is not a disaster. When it is removed, unlike the Zhiguli, the clutch housing remains on the car. The box itself seems complicated only at first glance. According to experienced mechanics, it is very easy to repair.
Many drivers complain that the new IZHs have a noisy rear axle gearbox. Rumor has it that sometimes in cars with low mileage, the gearbox simply jams. According to the plant workers, this problem has already been solved, but it is unlikely that such "solved" cars have already reached the secondary market. And since we got a car with a "vocal" axle, experts recommend, first of all, to adjust the unit according to the instructions. Then, as in the box, you need to fill in high-quality expensive oil. Even if you cannot completely defeat the noise, you will avoid complete failure of the gearbox.
