In detail: do-it-yourself catalyst repair Ford Focus 2 from a real master for the site my.housecope.com.
Ford Focus 2nd generation is one of the most popular cars in Russia. Over the years of our work, we have carried out the removal and replacement of Ford Focus 2 catalysts in more than a hundred cars.
The price of the Ford Focus 2 catalyst depends on the type of engine. For example, on a car with a 100 hp engine. (Duratec 1.6) Costs one catalyst. Cars with 1.8 and 2.0 liter engines have the same structure. FF2 1.6 has 115 hp. (Duratec Ti VCT 1.6) There are two “barrels” of converters immediately behind the exhaust manifold (see pictures 1 and 2). Accordingly, cut catalysts for the Ford Focus 2 115 hp. costs more.
We have several options for removing the Ford Focus 2 catalyst. They vary in price, but we guarantee that after the repair, the power and acceleration of the engine will increase compared to what it was before the breakdown. The check will not light up and the P0420 (P0430) error will not appear.
The most budgetary option is to remove the catalyst, remove the ceramic carrier, which is mechanically knocked out and put back into the exhaust system already empty "barrels". After that, you need to decide on the second lambda probe (in the case of FF2 1.6 115 hp there are two of them). You can put a mechanical snag of a lambda probe with a filler, or even better "flash" the car for Euro-2.
We do not recommend just knocking out the catalysts. Their purpose is not only to neutralize harmful impurities up to Euro-4 standards. The catalyst in the FF2 exhaust system is assigned the role of a preliminary resonator. Therefore, cars with empty catalytic converters run more noisily and have significantly lower muffler life.

If you decide to cut out the catalyst for Ford Focus 2, then you MUST install a flame arrester (two for a car with a 115 hp engine). In this case, the machine will work quietly and there will be no problems in the future.
There are car owners who delay the catalyst repair so much that it falls apart and becomes a plug on the way of exhaust gases. There are problems with starting the engine, and its maximum speed drops. The car simply refuses to go.Sometimes in such cases we are asked the following question. And if you put a snag of a lambda probe Ford Focus 2, will the car go? No, it won't! And the snag won't remove the unpleasant smell from the exhaust pipe either!
Cleaning the catalyst will not help in such cases - only replacement or removal.
By the way, the mechanical snag Ford Focus 2 itself is shown in Figure 3 (right). There are also electronic ones, which have a different principle of operation.
Deception of the lambda probe (mechanical and electronic) is designed to prevent the occurrence of the CHECK ENGINE P0420 (P0430) error.
The Euro-2 firmware is designed for exactly the same purposes. But the firmware still allows you to operate the car with a catalyst removed or replaced with a flame arrester and an inoperative second lambda probe. If you want to use snag, then the lambda probes must be functional.
The trick is placed under the second lambda probe. In the case of FF2 1.6, 115 hp. there are two of them (see Figure 4), cars with 1.6 (100 hp), 1.8 and 2.0 engines have one catalyst after which the oxygen sensor is located. Accordingly, in this case, one is needed.
The optimal solution to reduce the level of harmful substances emitted into the atmosphere during the operation of an internal combustion engine is to use a catalytic converter (catalyst, according to the documentation - a collector) of exhaust gases. It is mounted on both gasoline and diesel engines installed on the Ford Focus 2.As a result of a certain chemical process, the collector converts most of the harmful components of the exhaust gases (carbon monoxide (CO2), hydrocarbons (CH) and nitrogen oxides (NO2)) into substances that are not hazardous to the environment: carbon dioxide, water vapor and nitrogen.
When the oxygen present in the exhaust gases is supplied, CO and CH are burned (afterburned). As a result, CO2 and H2O are formed. This process removes (burns) oxygen and neutralizes NO2. It turns into N2, i.e. non-toxic nitrogen.
The catalyst on the Ford Focus 2 itself consists of heat-resistant ceramic honeycomb carriers, the surface of which is covered with a thin layer of precious metals (platinum, rhodium and / or palladium), so the catalysts are sometimes stolen and handed over to the metal.To regulate the amount of oxygen for both reactions, a lambda control loop is used, which is integrated into the Ford Focus 2 control electronics.
There are two types of catalytic converters used in the Ford Focus 2 car:
- engines 1.6 (100 hp), 1.8 and 2.0 liters - 1 collector and 2 lambda probe sensors;
- engines 1.6 l (115 hp) - two collectors and 4 sensors.
The sensors are located before and after the catalyst, and there is a "Catalyst" light on the Ford Focus 2 dashboard.
The catalytic converter on the Ford Focus 2 is designed for a mileage of 70 to 120 thousand km. Due to the unsatisfactory quality of the fuel, its failure occurs several times faster. It needs to be removed and replaced. The main symptom of a catalytic converter failure is a loss of vehicle power. There are several ways to check. The easiest way is to measure the content of harmful substances in the exhaust gases of Ford Focus 2. With clogged filter elements, naturally, the level will go off scale. The second way is to measure the back pressure at the outlet. The fastest way to do this is to unscrew the probe sensor, which is installed before the catalyst, then, using an adapter, connect a pressure gauge and measure the pressure at different engine loads. If the ceramic honeycomb is clogged, the pressure will be higher than normal. The ideal option is to combine the two. There is also a third way, this is the measurement of back pressure using a motor tester at a service station.- Remove the old one and simply install a new catalyst on your Ford Focus 2, for example, Euro-4, manufactured by MG-Race.
- Install a flame arrester and a mini-catalyst. It is placed either in the body of the catalyst, or welded instead of its "can". At the moment, for the Ford Focus 2, the best option is considered to be a replacement for flame arresters from SPRINT or MG-Race. Some motorists put the products of these companies also in order to get the original powerful sound when the FordFocus 2 power unit is operating, this is especially popular with hatchback owners. A minicatalyst is a mechanical spacer with a catalytic element inside it. It is installed so that the red error light on the panel does not light up. The downside is that the catalytic element is gradually failing and needs to be replaced. He serves for about 2 years. It should also not be forgotten that the flame arrester reduces the sound level. The sound is only marginally louder than with a proprietary catalyst.
- Replacement with a flame arrester and an electronic emulator (controller). The controller is installed on the second lambda probe sensor. It transmits a signal to the Focus dashboard that the catalytic converter is working perfectly. The error light is off and the fuel consumption is reduced by about 10%. This is because when there is not enough oxygen for the reactions in the honeycomb, the lambda control loop automatically increases the engine speed to increase the amount of exhaust gases and oxygen, respectively. When using the emulator, this does not happen and the motor runs normally.
- The lowest-cost option is to replace it with a self-made flame arrester and install it in the Ford Focus 2 catalyst housing.This is done by all sorts of "craftsmen", welding a 3 mm thick O-ring cone with an outer diameter of 125 mm with a 3 mm thick tube welded inside the ring and 50 mm in diameter with 5 mm holes and filling the empty space with kitchen brushes. Naturally, we are not talking about any controllers, specially turned nozzles for lambda probes are used, which do not always work correctly. The main task of these nozzles is to remove the sensor from the exhaust stream, thereby misleading it.
The question arises, why is it impossible to knock out the catalyst or cut it out and, without installing any flame arrester, just put the pipe? It is possible, of course, but the fact is that the collector plays the role of a preliminary resonator, that is, the hot exhaust gases in it are cooled to an acceptable temperature. Removing the ceramic of the catalyst or replacing it with a tube will lead to an increase in temperature and rapid deterioration of the main resonator. The muffler will simply "burn out" faster. And, of course, the emission of harmful substances into the environment will increase. You should also not forget about the volume of the sound of the motor. Removing the catalyst will also lead to an increase in the volume of the Ford Focus 2 power unit.
The mechanism that ensures the neutralization of toxic substances present in the composition of exhaust products is called a catalyst. This device is installed on imported vehicles in connection with the requirements of environmental regulations governing the concentration of harmful chemicals in gaseous emissions from vehicles.
The neutralizer has a complex design and includes the following components:
- metal body shell;
- functional block;
- insulating material;
- flange connections;
- oxygen controllers.
As a result of the passage of technological processes of the engine, gaseous waste is released. They are fed through the exhaust manifold to the catalytic converter. When waste products enter the working body, they pass through through holes with a special catalytic coating that participates in neutralizing chemical reactions. In this case, toxic compounds of nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons are oxidized. Decomposition reactions involving oxygen form water condensate, carbon dioxide and nitrogen.
The signs include:
- the appearance of an indication of the control electronics about the presence of technical problems with the converter;
- an increase in the rate of consumption of fuel fluid;
- the presence of extraneous vibration and sound effects;
- long starting process of the motor unit;
- engine operation is carried out intermittently at different operating conditions;
- slow process of speeding up the motor.
The reasons for some defects of the Ford Focus 2 converter:
- the presence of system failures leading to improper operation of the power unit;
- constant use of low-quality fuels;
- aggressive manner of driving when overcoming sections of the road of unsatisfactory condition, artificial and natural obstacles;
- refusal to perform periodic service inspections;
- ignoring the operational recommendations of the manufacturer's technical documentation.
Professionals of specialized service stations are engaged in the detection of technical inconsistencies of catalytic units and interdependent units. This is due to the complexity of diagnostic operations and the need to use specific equipment, devices and tools.
Another effective diagnostic technique is the implementation of verification manipulations in relation to the electronic system.These activities are carried out by experienced electronic engineers using sophisticated computerized equipment. Its connection is made using the corresponding connector of the on-board electronic unit. After that, the control system is examined for failures. Then the information obtained is analyzed, and an act of detected technical deficiencies is drawn up.
Removal of the Ford Focus 2 catalyst can occur for the following reasons:
- high sulfur content in domestic brands of fuel substance, which has a detrimental effect on the technical condition of the catalytic body;
- the sensitivity of the converter matrix unit to low-quality grades of fuel;
- fragility of the ceramic porous core, the possibility of destruction of the part with frequent vibration and shock loads;
- short service life under the conditions of domestic operation as a result of low-grade fuels and lubricants;
- the solid cost of the original converter;
- short warranty in the event of the use of an inappropriate fuel fluid. It does not coincide in quality with the fuel required by the technical documentation.
On a Ford Focus 2 car, the removal of the catalyst is carried out in the conditions of service organizations by experienced craftsmen who have the necessary tools and devices. There are several ways to get rid of a stock converter. The simplest and easiest option is to dismantle the entire catalytic unit. For this, the exhaust manifold and the intake manifold are removed. Then the fastening clamps are unscrewed and the converter unit is disconnected with further repair actions, their nature depends on the restoration method chosen by the client.
The catalyst can be cut out and replaced with alternative designs. To perform such work, it will be necessary to dismantle the manifold with part of the exhaust pipe. Further, the fasteners are released and the converter mechanism is separated, followed by its fixation with a special device. Further, by using a cutting tool, a part of the body is cut out along the perimeter and the catalytic ceramic body is removed. Instead of it, similar or alternative components can be installed. Also, the converter unit can be cut out along the connecting pipes.
Interfacing with the electronic monitoring system occurs through a cable connection with the diagnostic port of the on-board control center. The wizard edits the relevant data and removes the software link with an information block containing information about the catalyst and controllers. The implementation of such procedures is guaranteed to eliminate the occurrence of problem situations with the control electronics.
Another solution to the errors of on-board control after the physical cutting of the converter is the installation of electronic snag of oxygen probes. These works involve the connection of the spoofing device to the connector of the electronic assembly. From here the oxygen controllers are powered. The fraudulent mechanism is a microcircuit with a processor enclosed in a case and made of composite materials. When a signal is received from the sensor, the blende processes it and emulates the transmission of correct data. After that, the electronic system determines the normal functioning of the catalyst, and errors do not occur.
The price of carrying out repair manipulations depends on their complexity. These recovery procedures refer to works of average labor intensity. The need to dismantle the exhaust manifold and the exhaust line is taken into account. Also, the price includes the direct execution of the cutting of the catalyst.Performing only these operations will amount to a small amount of funds due to the simple configuration of the work and the small amount of time spent on the implementation of repair work. If you want to install analogs or alternative components, costs will increase. The cost indicators will include installation operations and the price of a part, which will later be installed on the exhaust unit.
• Open the hood and remove the plastic cover that covers the wiper.
(IMG: https: //my.housecope.com/wp-content/uploads/ext/2218/up32534-21.jpg)
• Remove the aluminum heat shield, which is located behind the engine and covers the "pants".
(IMG: https: //my.housecope.com/wp-content/uploads/ext/2218/up32534-81.jpg)
• Disconnect the connectors for the lambda probes, they are located on the right behind the engine.
(IMG: https: //my.housecope.com/wp-content/uploads/ext/2218/up32534-5.jpg)
Pit work:
• Remove engine underbody protection, if fitted.
• Unscrew the lower (second) lambda probe.
(IMG: https: //my.housecope.com/wp-content/uploads/ext/2218/up32534-71.jpg)
• Unscrew the first lambda probe, if stuck you can not unscrew it, it will not interfere. In principle, the second one can not be unscrewed (if it is stuck), but it will be a little more problematic to get it, and it is better to tie the wires of the lambda probes to the body of the catalytic converter.
(IMG: https: //my.housecope.com/wp-content/uploads/ext/2218/up32534-82.jpg)
• Unscrew the two nuts securing the catalytic converter to the muffler pipe.
• Disconnect the catalytic converter and muffler.
Works not in the pit:
• Unscrew the pants from the engine. Unscrew the pins on which the pants were worn (torx).
Working together:
• One from the pit, the other from under the hood, remove the catalytic converter to the top.
And finally, the very removal of the contents from the catalyst.
• Working with an assistant. A board or plywood is put on the asphalt, we push our pants into it, insert a scrap as shown in the figure and destroy it with forward blows. With the help of a flashlight, we see how the process goes. In addition to ceramics, there is still asbestos fabric inside, we also remove it.
(IMG: https: //my.housecope.com/wp-content/uploads/ext/2218/up32534-______________________.jpg)
• After everything is removed, I recommend rinsing with water pressure so that no fine sand remains.
• Assembly is carried out upside-down.
Do not forget about the snag, who likes what, mechanical or electronic. Personally, I have an electronic resistance of 200 ohms. with a power of 0.25 watts, and a non-polar capacitor of 4.7 microfarads. voltage of 5 volts, better ceramic, it is slightly larger than a match head. And everything works great. Below is a photo of ceramic capacitors. 4.7 MKF on the far right.
(IMG: https: //my.housecope.com/wp-content/uploads/ext/2218/up32534-111.jpg)
Below is a diagram of the trick itself. If you could not find the ratings as in the diagram, you can try to put the resistance from 150 to 300 Kom. You can try to put a capacitor up to 10 MkF.

The gasoline Ford Focus 2 with a 1.6 liter engine began to consume more fuel and the error indication on the dashboard lit up. Diagnostics indicated a malfunction of the catalyst. What to do in this case and how to fix the problem permanently.
What is a catalyst on a car.
The catalytic converter is a ceramic or metal honeycomb with a special coating that reduces the level of toxicity of emissions. Hazardous emissions that have not been burned out in the engine fall on the hot spraying on the catalyst and burn out.
How and for what reason catalysts on the Ford Focus 2 - 1.6i can fail.
There are two options for catalyst breakdown:
– Catalyst efficiency decreases due to the gradual and eventually complete burnout of the special spraying. This can happen from long-term operation of the car (high mileage), from poor-quality fuel and from engine malfunction (wrong mixture that burns out the deposition in the catalyst)
– Physical destruction of the catalyst. Poor quality fuel, faulty engine, increased oil consumption.
What are the possible symptoms of a catalyst breakdown on Ford Focus 2 - 1.6i.
– increased fuel consumption
– error indication on the dashboard (check engine, breakdown message)
– loss of power
Like most of the car owners who came to us to repair the catalysts, the Ford owner chose to physically remove the catalysts and replace them with flame arresters. At the start of work, the vehicle's mileage was 181,130 km.
Under the hood is a 1.6-liter gasoline engine. This vehicle is equipped with one catalytic converter located in the exhaust manifold.
The exhaust manifold with a catalytic converter has been removed from the vehicle.
The catalyst housing is open, the ceramic honeycomb has been removed, and in its place we install a stainless steel flame arrester.
Since the flame arresters have a double wall with perforation and dense metal packing, they will remove heat and sound stress.
After installing the flame arrester in the catalytic converter housing, the housing is welded and the exhaust manifold is installed back onto the vehicle.
There are two options for eliminating errors when removing the catalyst on Ford Focus 2 - 1.6i:
- installation of mechanical trompe l'oeil with a mini-catalyst
- software deactivation of catalyst monitoring (deactivation of the oxygen sensor - lambda)
The method with mechanical blende is cheaper, but over time, like the catalyst, the blende can fail. Software shutdown fixes the problem forever. This car was equipped with a mechanical snag with a mini-catalyst.
The car is assembled, control diagnostics and our work on the removal of catalysts at the Ford Focus is completed.
Would you like to solve a problem with a catalytic converter on your car? Contact our company and you will forget about this breakdown forever.

We carry out the work when replacing the gasket in the connection between the flange of the collector and the cylinder head, in case of failure of the catalytic converter or metal compensator. We carry out the work on a viewing ditch or overpass.
Remove the engine compartment mudguard (see "Removing the Ford Focus 2 engine compartment mudguard"). The junction of the collector flange with the cylinder head mating plane is sealed with a metal gasket. In the event that the gasket is burnt out or the tightening of the collector mounting nuts is loose, the exhaust gases can escape through this connection to the outside, which is accompanied by a characteristic sound. If it is not possible to eliminate the defect by tightening the nuts securing the flange of the collector, it is necessary to replace the gasket.
To avoid burns, it is recommended to start work after the exhaust system has cooled down.
Disconnect the oxygen concentration sensors wiring pads from the engine control system wiring harness pads (see "Removing oxygen concentration sensors").
Using a 10 spanner spanner, unscrew the four bolts securing the heat shield to the collector ...
The location of the bolts of the heat shield
With a penetrating liquid, we wet the nuts securing the flange of the collector to the cylinder head and the nuts for fastening the flanges of the collector and the additional muffler pipe.
We remove the cushions of the exhaust system suspension from the two brackets of the katkollektor (see "Replacing the cushions of the exhaust system Ford Focus 2").
Disconnect the flanges of the katkollektor and pipes of the additional muffler and remove the gasket (see "Replacing the additional and main mufflers Ford Focus 2").
Using the "10" head, unscrew the two bolts securing the bracket of the collector to the engine bracket.
With a spanner wrench "13" we unscrew the two bolts securing the bracket to the cylinder block ...
Using the "15" head, unscrew the four nuts and one bolt that secures the collector flange to the cylinder head.
If the nuts are stuck to the studs, they can be loosened together with the studs.
This is normal.
We move the katkollektor along the remaining pins of the cylinder head ...
We remove the metal gasket of the collector.
We unscrew the nuts remaining on the studs.
Apply a thin layer of thread sealant to the threaded part of the stud screwed into the cylinder head.
The turned-out pins are wrapped in the cylinder head with the E8 head. We carry out further assembly in the reverse order. Before installing the collector, clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and the collector flange from carbon deposits and install a new gasket. Before tightening new nuts for fastening the collector, apply graphite grease to the pins of the cylinder head.
Tighten the nuts and bolt for fastening the collector to the prescribed torque (see Appendices).
The order of tightening the mounting elements of the collector

People, is there a lambda 2 on the first focus? And then I was looking for her and did not find, the first one is immediately visible. Regarding the flame gas, I cut out the catalyst on my metro (Chevrolet Metro) and welded the flame gas. I changed the second lambda, screwed it into the "spacer", and screwed the spacer itself into the hole for the lambda. It helped and Jackie Chan didn't show up.
So, I'm waiting for this on my focus, is there a second lambda there?

Well, if this is not an advertisement, then the cost of this trick is very high. And it's not a fact that it will work, it's easier to install an electronic one.

- decrease in engine power (deterioration of acceleration dynamics, decrease in maximum speed), coupled with increased fuel consumption
- Difficulty starting the internal combustion engine (it began to start longer)
- pungent poisonous odor from the exhaust system
- extraneous noises are heard from the catalyst (ringing, rattling)
- shows diagnostics with corresponding errors indicating ineffective operation
If there is any suspicion of improper work - come, we will conduct a free diagnosis. We will make the necessary repairs if necessary.
We offer the most reliable option - replacing the catalyst with a high-quality factory-made flame arrester (see figures) made of two-layer stainless steel with the installation of a controller for adjusting the readings of the lambda probe (blende) of our own production.

There is a misconception that after removing the catalyst and replacing it with a flame arrester, Focus (ff3 ff2 ff1) will work louder, no matter what flame arrester is installed. Flame arresters of the latest generation work as quietly as catalysts, and sometimes even quieter if two or three reflective, cooling and noise-absorbing chambers are made inside, and 2-3 types of packing are used to extinguish noise, temperature and pressure. The highest quality stuffing is made of stainless wire and Kevlar: it is not afraid of high temperatures and due to its strength it is not blown out. It absorbs noise three times better than basalt (the most common). Products with such a gasket cool exhaust gases better than their counterparts, and serve 10 times longer.
Comment. We do not replace them with universal catalysts for Ford Focus 1 2 3 due to their unsuitability for our gasoline, coupled with low quality performance by manufacturers for the sake of low prices (mainly China).
All of the above operations are performed for all generations of the model and versions intended for any country:

The catalytic converter is designed to clean the exhaust gases of a car from harmful emissions of carbon monoxide, unburned fuel particles, nitrogen oxides. The reasons for getting out of the standing part are the development of a resource, the use of bad gasoline, mechanical destruction. If the catalyst breaks down, we get difficulties when starting the engine, loss of power, errors on the on-board computer.
Failure of the catalytic converter will require its replacement. The part is not repaired due to the design features. The use of expensive metals in the cleaning process: rhodium, platinum and palladium makes this part very expensive. Various Ford models use one- and two-stage catalysts, further increasing the cost of repairs. Installing a universal analogue instead of a native catalyst can significantly reduce the cost of replacing a part. Replacement will not affect the normal operation of the engine and its noise characteristics.
It is more convenient to replace the catalyst by removing it from the car, disconnecting it from the cylinder block and the exhaust tract. The part is cut out by a grinder on both sides, with marking for subsequent precise installation, if an alternative option is chosen with installation in the native body. To install a new catalyst, welding is carried out in a shielding gas environment using a semi-automatic installation with a copper electrode supply.
In the event that your Ford model does not have the ability to install a universal catalyst, i.e. native is located on the manifold, we advise you to order the installation of a flame arrester on a Ford.

Let's remove the catalyst and install the flame arrester on Ford vehicles with different engine sizes and any mileage.
This part serves to eliminate vibration transmitted from a running engine through the manifold to the catalyst and muffler. We have a replacement corrugation for a Ford.
Replacing the corrugation of a Ford car is performed in almost the same way as installing a flame arrester. Remove the exhaust manifold with a catalyst and corrugation from the car. We cut out the old failed part. A small extension ring is welded onto a new one, the weld spots are slightly distributed and the new part is welded into place. During all work, they try to preserve the original geometry of the system. After the entire welding site, they are treated with anti-corrosion paint.
Muffler - the penultimate part on the exhaust line of the car. Serves to reduce exhaust noise. Failure of a muffler is often accompanied not only by an increase in noise, but by the appearance of a metallic ringing. In case of burnout, in general, on a well-preserved muffler, it is possible to perform welding work with sealing the burnout site. Often the economic feasibility does not recommend repairing the muffler, it is cheaper to replace it. In the event that minor repairs do not help, the muffler can be replaced without removing the entire exhaust system from the car. During repairs, it is imperative to check the damper suspensions and, if necessary, replace them.
