Unscrew the screws securing the tachometer spiral and carefully remove it. Try not to deform the spiral. It is advisable to immediately plug the resulting hole with a rag or other similar object.
Remove the bolts securing the gearbox to the engine. Disconnect the ends of the shifting mechanism from the shifting levers. Dismantle the retaining spring clips first. Disconnect the wires from the starter. Unscrew the nut on the rubber-metal engine mount. Remove the top bolt securing the starter as well as the bolt holding the coolant pipe.
Unscrew the bolt on the support suspension bracket, disconnect the ground connection element, and then fasten the suspension bracket to the gearbox. Remove the bolts securing the front side of the gearbox.
Now raise the engine and gearbox above the engine compartment using the cables. It is important to make sure that the vehicle is not lifted off the box.
Unscrew all remaining bolts on the starter and remove it. Remove the protective shield above the clutch. It is located behind the right flange of the shift actuator.
After placing a jack under the checkpoint, raise the gearbox.
Unscrew the drive shafts from the gearbox outputs. In this case, it is imperative to use a special wrench, since the bolts have a special head with an internal polyhedron.
Turn the steering wheel to the left until it stops and secure the shafts in a suitable area with a cord or wire. If this is not done, they will interfere with us during the residual disassembly and make assembly a little more difficult.
Remove the rear and front suspension mounts. The bolt securing them is next to the shaft flange.
After making sure that the engine is reliably held by the cable in a suspended state, and the jack is confidently under the gearbox, unscrew all the bolts connecting the engine and the gearbox from below. The gearbox can now be removed from the dowel pins.
Assembly is carried out upside-down.
During assembly, it is advisable to thoroughly clean the splined connection of the clutch shaft and lubricate it with graphite grease. The manufacturer recommends using VW G000100 grease for this. Make sure that all dowel pins are in place, namely in the cylinder block. In the final assembly, make sure the midplane fits securely on the motor guide sleeve.
Be sure to check the transmission oil level after installation. The oil level must reach the lower edge of the inspection and filler hole. When checking the level, make sure that the car is installed strictly horizontally, otherwise you can make a mistake in the true oil level and add too much, which will negatively affect the operation of the entire gearbox.
