The garage is the second home. At least for a man. And if the wife maintains order in the apartment, the husband deals with rearrangements, cleaning and repairs in the garage. True, often the matter is not limited to the usual washing of floors, you have to repair the floor, and the gates, and even repair the garage roof yourself. Well, how else! There must be order in everything! It is about the roof and how to patch holes on it with your own hands that will be discussed in this article.

In fact, one or another method of repairing a garage roof depends on the building itself, the type of roof and the degree of wear and tear of the structure. As a rule, in private households, where the garage is separate from the house itself, inexpensive roofing materials with a long service life are used. These are corrugated board, metal tiles, flexible tiles and ondulin. Collective garages are unlikely to be covered with corrugated board or tiles; soft materials on a bitumen basis will be more appropriate here.

In this regard, there are three ways to repair a roof in a garage:

  1. With hot bitumen
  2. Using soft roofing materials
  3. With the help of corrugated board or shingles

First of all, it is necessary to determine the degree of wear of the roof and identify those elements that require replacement. In addition, you should stock up on special equipment and some free time. The fastest repair of the garage roof is carried out using sheet and roll materials, but with piece (tiles, for example) you will have to tinker. See for yourself: one sheet of corrugated board can cover up to 9 square meters of surface, and a sheet of flexible tiles - 0.14 square meters. It turns out that in order to cover all the same 9 sq.m. you will have to fix 63 shingles on the roof surface, and this will take a lot of time and effort.

So, before starting repair work, remove all debris from the roof and especially thoroughly clean the most problematic areas. Examine the roof carefully, perhaps everything is not so bad and you can restrict yourself to only patches, and not a complete replacement of the roof. If the old materials are still suitable, then simply cut out the holes with an ax in those places that you consider problematic - in the future you will patch them up and thereby return the roof to its former reliability.

If the roof of your garage was covered with soft roofing materials such as roofing felt, then you may notice cracks or bulges on its surface. Such defects must be eliminated even before repair. To do this, take a sharp knife and cut the blemish crosswise. Bend the resulting triangles so that they do not bulge and prevent you from moving freely on the roof, and thoroughly clean all their "insides" of dust and debris. Later, you will fill these holes with bitumen, thereby preventing leakage.

Having decided to repair the garage roof with your own hands using hot bitumen, you will have to stock up on:

  • bitumen - ½ bag
  • a bucket - which is not a pity
  • rope - to lift the bucket to the roof
  • stairs - otherwise how do you go up to the garage
  • metal hook - for convenient lifting of the bucket
  • firewood and gasoline - for making a fire
  • bricks - for the construction of "barbecue"
  • with a brush - for cleaning problem areas from dirt
  • gloves.

After clearing the roof of the garage from debris and dirt, start heating the bitumen. To do this, you need to kindle a fireplace and build something similar to a barbecue grill - you put a bucket of bitumen on it. When the material warms up and becomes plastic, you can start pouring it.

Lift the bucket to the roof and fill the problem areas with hot bitumen, guiding the material with a wooden board. You can "patch" the entire surface in this way, but you can only those flaws that are a source of leakage during rain. Spill holes you cut through especially carefully. Make sure that the bitumen fills them to the top, leaving no chance for water.

Roofing material and bikrost belong to soft roofing materials. The first is laid on the bitumen mastic, the second is fused with a gas burner. Accordingly, we can conclude that bikrost is much easier to install, because you do not have to fiddle with mastic.

Repairing the roof of the garage with roofing felt is also not difficult. If you decide that you do not need a complete overhaul with a complete replacement of the roof, then just cut out a few pieces of roofing material and cover the cut holes with it. The cut must fully match the size of the holes, otherwise the whole work will be down the drain.

First, resin or bitumen mastic is applied inside the hole. Then a piece of roofing material is laid, and on top is another layer of bitumen. It is not necessary to wait for drying, but it is necessary to immediately return the bent triangles to their place. Now all that remains is to patch up the resulting cuts with one more patch. The main thing is that the size of the piece is several centimeters larger than the damaged area. On top of the patch, apply an additional layer of mastic - this way you will achieve the desired result more likely.

The next step (if, of course, you decide to completely cover the roof) is complete waterproofing of the roof with roofing felt. The panels are laid on the tar layer, which must be applied in parts as the work progresses. The strips of roofing material are overlapped by 10-15 centimeters. If bubbles appear during installation, they are cut with a knife, and the cuts are pressed tightly to the roof surface and additionally coated with tar.

Pay particular attention to where your garage roof connects to adjacent roofs. As a rule, cracks and delamination of old materials form at these joints.

With the help of roofing material, a single, almost solid, canvas is created that prevents moisture from penetrating into the room. In most cases, one layer of material is enough, but a double carpet is arranged in cases where either the operating conditions are quite difficult or the weather conditions leave much to be desired.

The cost of repairing a garage roof with roofing material will be about 500-600 rubles. This amount includes the roofing material itself (210-300 rubles per roll of 10-15 meters), resin or bitumen - 100 rubles per bag and improvised materials (if there are none in your arsenal).

With bikrost, everything is much easier, because this material does not require the use of bitumen mastic or tar. For its installation, a gas burner is used, and it is attached to the roof surface using a special layer of oxidized bitumen, which quickly and easily adheres to the base.

Roll out the roll gently 50-60 centimeters. Heat the seamy side with a gas burner and press this piece to the roof surface with a T-stick. Standing with your feet on a fresh roof, roll out the roll another half a meter and reheat the inside out with a burner. The second strip should be overlapped from the first by 7-8 centimeters.

Thus, to repair a standard roof of a city garage, you will need only an hour and a half, while with roofing felt or bitumen it will take much longer. True, in the case of using bikrost to repair the garage roof, the price of this repair itself will increase from 500 rubles to 1500 rubles, since the material to be welded is much more expensive than roofing material.
