For wall decoration, two types of finishing materials are most often used - wallpaper and paint. Moreover, the paint, which once lost its popularity, is gaining it again. This is because new formulations have appeared that look beautiful, are easy to apply, do not smell, many wash and do not lose their attractiveness for a long time. At the same time, painting walls in the kitchen takes much less time than wallpapering, and it looks, at least, not worse.
A kitchen is a room where stains are likely to occur. Moreover, their nature can be very different. These can be stains of fat, any caustic substances, juices and sauces with a bright color. Hence the main requirement when choosing a paint - it should wash well.
Special washable paints (Tikkurila Remontti Assa, Teknos Biora Balance) are suitable for these requirements, creating a dense film on the surface. These paints are made on the basis of latex or acrylic, they are an aqueous dispersion, that is, they almost do not smell. They can wash with brushes, and some can even use abrasive substances (DULUX Realife, DULUX Diamond Matt, Tikkurila Luja 40, Johnstones Acrylic Eggshell).
The situation is even better when cleaning walls covered with anti-vandal or resistant paints. They withstand several thousand cycles of washing with brushes and detergents (Johnstones Acrylic Durable Matt, Johnstones Anti-Mold Acrylic, Teknos Timantti 40, Novatic Feste Farbe, Novatic Innenlatex matt).
A little about the type of surface that is obtained after painting the walls. Stains are best washed off glossy surfaces, worst of all - from matte. The matte surface is obtained due to the inhomogeneous, porous structure. In these heterogeneities, a pollutant is clogged and it is more difficult to wash it off (there are rare exceptions - DULUX Diamond Matt). Therefore, on walls that will have to be washed often, it is better to use glossy, semi-gloss or at least semi-matte compositions.
Some acrylic, acrylate and latex paints have good hiding power, due to which they can make small defects invisible. But, in general, good preparation is required - the walls are first plastered, then putty and sanded until a perfectly flat plane is obtained. To obtain a reliable base, fiberglass is glued to the layer of starting putty - a cobweb. It serves to reinforce the base. After the glue dries on the "spider web", the walls are leveled with a finishing putty and finally sanded.
Painting walls in the kitchen with glossy or semi-gloss paints requires very even walls: gloss reveals even the smallest irregularities. To get a good result, pay maximum attention to this issue. All irregularities can be illuminated using an LED lamp. It very clearly indicates all irregularities.
To make the paint lay flat, the walls are primed. The composition is selected depending on the type of paint: for latex you need your own primer, for acrylic - your own. This stage evens out the absorbency of the base, which reduces the consumption of not cheap paint. It is absorbed into the surface covered with soil in the same amount, a beautiful, even coating is obtained.
Painting walls in a brick kitchen also requires a preliminary primer.
Even if the wall to be painted is purposely made uneven - brickwork or other similar embossed surfaces - a primer is desirable. It further improves adhesion to the base, the paint adheres better, holds stronger, does not flake off.
It is not easy to decide what color to paint the walls in the kitchen. The choice of colors and shades is very wide, many companies offer to tint the composition on branded equipment in one of the RAL colors, which is more than 200 shades. In addition, special shades can be created - metallic, sparkles, etc.Considering that painting the walls in the kitchen can be non-uniform - stripes, geometric and floral patterns, ornaments, painting and any other ways of decorating walls, the number of options tends to infinity. However, first you need to choose the main color of the walls in the kitchen. When choosing a dominant color, there are two approaches:
When choosing a color, it is worth remembering its influence on the emotional state of a person. Red is the color of danger, accelerates the work of all body systems. It is tiresome to stay in such a room for a long time. If you crave activity, you can choose it, or a milder orange. If relaxation is needed, something calmer is required. For example, green and its shades. It creates a calm atmosphere, and in order not to be so boring, you can add yellow. Green becomes more active with it.
Brown creates a sense of stability, but do not use shades that are too dark - it will be too gloomy. Black in its pure form suppresses, but as an "addition" to all winders makes the interior more dynamic. It is good in small doses.
Can't decide what color to paint the walls of the kitchen? Choose from gray, white or beige - ideal for striking kitchen furniture fronts
White, gray, beige - these are ideal "background" shades that allow you to highlight brighter interior items without overloading it. That is why painting the walls in the kitchen in these colors is used where the facades are decorated in rich colors.
The exact order in which the paint is applied depends on the type of binder and substrate and the effect you want to achieve. But there are common points:
When you're done painting the walls in the kitchen, don't rush to test how well your chosen paint washes. Please read the instructions carefully first. Some of the formulations take only a month after application to acquire their performance characteristics. So don't be in a hurry.
All of the above is true for all types of paint - water dispersion acrylic, latex. But, before starting work, carefully read the manufacturer's recommendations. If there are differing recommendations, they must be followed.
Not so long ago, a third trend has appeared - painting the walls in the kitchen in two colors. Companion colors are selected. These can be shades of the same color - dark and light, they can be contrasting or combined. If you want to match different colors, use the designer color matching charts.
In any case, the most popular trend is painting one wall a different color.This allows you to clearly define the accents. In the kitchen, this is usually a wall with a dining table next to it, but not necessarily.
Another option is to apply stripes of a different color. More often - the stripes are vertical, which helps to visually "raise" the ceiling. They are usually of different widths, located at different distances from each other, but this is far from canon. The options are different. Several - in the picture below.
If you do not want variegation, you can play with the texture of paints. The combination of stripes of glossy and matt paint in the same color gives a very interesting effect. It's like a combination of velvet and satin. It looks very interesting.
If the stripes are narrow, paint the walls in the dominant color first. After drying, strips of masking tape are glued, which will serve as borders when painted in a different color. After the second shade completely overlaps the first, the adhesive tape is removed, and clear boundaries are obtained without "transition".
So that painting the walls in the kitchen is not boring, it can be revived with a drawing, ornament. Drawing is more difficult to handle - you need professional skills, and drawing ornaments on walls can be easier than you think. With the use of stencils, this is not difficult at all. You can make them yourself from thick paper, pasted over with tape (to make it easier to cut and not tear), or you can buy ready-made ones, cut out on thick plastic wrap.
A suitable stencil is attached to the wall. The easiest way to do this is with masking tape. The paint is applied with a regular sponge (you can use a kitchen sponge). They take a little paint on the sponge, distribute it evenly over the entire surface (a plastic plate is suitable as a palette). With this "tool" we paint over the wall in the slots. Since there is not much paint, it dries quickly.
If you want to get a two-color ornament, cover the parts that you will paint in a different color with adhesive tape (also painting). Apply the pattern in one color, wait for the paint to dry. Cover these parts with tape and add the missing part in a different color.
To obtain a two-color pattern, cover some of the slots with tape.
You can find a suitable drawing for the kitchen in the catalog of sites selling ready-made stencils. There are a lot of them in different styles. You will definitely find the one that you like best.

The kitchen is a room that needs renovation over time. And kitchen walls are especially problematic places, since when cooking, it is on them that dust, soot, condensation accumulates to a greater extent, subsequently greasy stains and scratches appear. How to achieve a neat and beautiful kitchen space? For this, it is important to reliably protect the walls in such a way that then dirt deposits can be easily removed from their surface.
The best option in this case is to paint the walls, since this coating is bright and beautiful, easy to clean, relatively easy to update and available for any family budget. At the same time, on a smooth surface with well-designed lighting, a spectacular gradient pattern is beautifully visible, which can emphasize the individual style of the kitchen.
Paints and varnishes are great for creating a modern kitchen design with your own hands. To determine the most suitable paint for kitchen walls, you need to know its properties, characteristics and selection parameters:
the most important parameter that determines the optimal paint is water resistance;
Currently, the market for consumers offers various types of paints and varnishes that can be used to paint the walls in an apartment with high quality. They differ in the coloring composition.But the requirements remain unchanged: increased strength during prolonged exposure to changing microclimatic and temperature conditions, the influence of various conditions of water, cleaning with abrasive substances.
The most popular paints are water-dispersion and water-based paints, which in turn are silicone, acrylic, mineral and silicate, their main composition: water, color pigments and polymers.
For kitchen walls, acrylic and silicone are used.
Acrylic paints are the best option. It is mainly composed of organic resins and latex. The result is bright, beautiful walls with a durable and washable finish. Acrylic is optimal for processing wooden, brick walls, as well as drywall, plaster, OSB boards, chipboard and fiberboard. One drawback - the cost is higher than other types of paints.
Water-dispersion paints in the form of a suspended emulsion obtained have advantages in the form of ease of use and speed of drying. The most convenient way to apply this emulsion is with a spray gun. The material fits well even on old paint. This is a fairly budgetary option that has good vapor permeability and, if all the conditions for correct application are met, it can please up to several decades. But when exposed to low temperatures, they lose their characteristics. For this reason, it should be stored only at room temperature.
Alkyd and oil paints - due to a strong unpleasant odor, they are less common. Their advantages: wear resistance, resistance to moisture and detergents, low price, economical consumption, a wide range of colors and shades.
Before starting painting, it is necessary to prepare the surface by treating it with a putty followed by priming, otherwise all the unevenness of the walls will become visible. Therefore, it is necessary to remove the old coating and use the filler to make the surface as even as possible. This process will require:
a spatula for applying and distributing the spatula on the wall;
a spatula for applying the composition to a large spatula;
a bar having sandpaper clamps.
If there are large holes and cracks in the wall, a coarse starting putty will be required, which adheres more strongly to the surface to be treated.
As a result, new flaws in the form of cracks do not appear. A finishing putty is distributed on top to level out minor defects. After drying, all plastered walls are sanded using a surface grinder or circular motions of a block with sandpaper. For this process, bright lighting is important, which will allow you to see all small defects. Due to grinding, a lot of dust appears, so a respirator must be used.To avoid dust entering the kitchen area, wet towels can be used, which must be placed on the threshold and in the doorway.
If you have some free time and some money, and life has become too monotonous, you can make a kitchen renovation with your own hands. This will not only save money, but also acquire useful skills and even improve health, because physical activity has not harmed anyone yet.
The chances of getting a result in which you are not afraid to invite people to your kitchen after your own repair will increase significantly if you use the advice of a specialist.
When deciding how to make repairs in the kitchen, it is necessary first of all to consider the finishing materials, taking into account the costs of their acquisition and the possibility of self-installation.
So that the kitchen does not stand out much from the rest of the rooms, it is advisable to do everything in the same style.
When determining where to start renovating a kitchen, first of all, they choose a style.There are more than a dozen of them for kitchen decoration, the most famous: classic, high-tech, modern, minimalism, baroque - the implementation of many requires a lot of money.
In the classics, expensive natural materials are used - a wooden kitchen set, parquet on the floor. High-tech and modern require the presence of expensive plastic and glass materials and are more suitable for modern young people, baroque with carved furniture looks better in living rooms and bedrooms.
For established people, one of the options that are simple and affordable is to decorate the kitchen in the Provence style on their own, which allows you to create a beautiful, cozy interior, characterized by comfort and grace.
Recently, Provence has been quite popular, it assumes the presence of light pastel colors in the decoration of the room and the furniture itself (finishing under natural light wood), the presence of plants and decorative elements. Provence excludes the presence of bulky interior items (heavy curtains, massive chandeliers), the kitchen should be light and a little romantic.
Provence will add coziness and warmth to your kitchen, as it looks organic
Making repairs in the kitchen with your own hands with a small budget in the Provence style is not difficult, it does not require a lot of construction experience and special expensive tools.
Most often in the kitchen, plasterboard ceilings are used, stretch, painted or pasted over with wallpaper. You can also use a ceiling finish made of expanded polystyrene or foam ceiling tiles or PVC panels - do-it-yourself repairs are easy, although in the latter case, you will need to arrange a wooden or metal frame to fix the PVC panels.
It is not difficult to paint the ceiling, it is enough to have a roller with a long handle
Usually, the ceilings in the kitchen are painted with waterproof paints - acrylic latex, water-based. If the ceiling is flat enough and has been painted with waterproof paint, it will not be difficult to repaint it with a roller.
This must be done at least twice, the first time the staining occurs perpendicular to the direction of light from the window, the second time - along.
In some cases, it may be necessary to level the ceiling - for this it is necessary to rinse it very well and clean it up to the floor slab, prime it and apply a putty, and after it dries, wipe it with sandpaper.
Wallpaper on the ceiling looks unusual, but it is advisable to buy a waterproof version
Gluing thick waterproof wallpapers to the ceiling will eliminate the need to level it and give it a more interesting aesthetic appearance than in the case of staining.
The choice of wallpaper for the ceiling is a budget option, besides, pasting the ceiling is a fairly simple job that even housewives can handle. It is advisable to prime the ceiling before wallpapering, the stripes should be glued in the direction of the light.
Do-it-yourself Provence-style decoration requires a light wooden floor. Naturally, in a damp kitchen, natural wood is expensive and impractical and can be replaced with common flooring materials such as ceramic tiles, laminate or linoleum - all of which come in natural light wood finishes.
Ceramic tiles are durable materials with water-resistant properties, but require careful handling of heavy objects
Not the most suitable option for decorating the kitchen with your own hands; for laying tiles on the kitchen floor, you will need a special tool (tile cutter, grinder) and the skills of a qualified tiler.
In almost all kitchens, because the tile floor is rather cold, it is laid on an electric heating mat in the form of a wire about 5 mm thick. on the grid.This further complicates the task of laying tiles and requires the connection of the heater control unit with a knockout to install it, a hole in the wall and a strobe for the electric wire.
Considering that finishing a Provence style kitchen on your own will require the involvement of specialists for laying tiles, and the work will be quite expensive, this option can be abandoned.
It is advisable to choose a waterproof laminate, since the kitchen is quite humid and there is a high likelihood of frequent splashing of water on the floor.
Ordinary laminate is not a very suitable material for the kitchen due to its low water resistance, therefore, more expensive moisture resistant types with special surface treatment and locking joints should be used. It is quite easy to repair the kitchen with your own hands, laying the laminate on a substrate, subject to a simple work technology.
Moisture-resistant types of laminate can withstand exposure to water for about 6 hours without consequences, while waterproof ones are not afraid of its effects. Waterproof laminate is also made in the form of panels of various thicknesses or glued to the floor, its only drawback is the very high price.
If linoleum breaks in one place, you will have to replace it throughout the room.
A budget option for laying on the kitchen floor, modern types have the widest range of colors and patterns, commercial brands are highly durable and durable.
The disadvantages of linoleum when laying in the kitchen can be attributed to its small thickness, which leads to different levels of the floor if laminate is laid in the corridor. That is why many people prefer to lay out the floor in the kitchen from impractical ceramic tiles.
This problem has a simple solution - the floor in the kitchen is filled with a leveling self-leveling mixture to the required thickness (3 - 10 mm) - this allows not only to raise the level, but also to level the floor.
You can do the filling work yourself if you have a special gear roller and a mixer for mixing the solution (self-leveling is sold in bags as a dry mixture).
Before laying linoleum, it is necessary to make a perfectly flat floor so that there are no differences in height.
A construction mixer can be replaced with a household drill by purchasing an inexpensive whisk for mixing the solution, a roller - with a metal comb with teeth (this option is very risky to use, liquid self-leveling may not spread well on the floor and it will be damaged).
You can repair the floor by laying linoleum on KS or PVA building glue yourself, this is not too difficult construction work.
Kitchen walls should also be practical and easy to clean.
Renovation of a Provence style kitchen implies light colors; for wall decoration, MDF or PVC panels, ceramic tiles, painting, wallpapering are most often used, and the types of finishes are often combined.
Nowadays, rarely anyone decorates the entire kitchen with ceramic tiles, even to the middle of the walls, it is too expensive and out of fashion, the work area is mainly laid out with tiles.
There are 2 types of MDF, fiberboard or PVC panels: from a solid sheet (average size 1.2 m by 3 m) or type-setting, which are mounted on a wooden or metal frame.
In the latter case, the use of type-setting panels is impractical, since this significantly reduces the free space of the kitchen by the thickness of the frame and panel. In kitchens, it is better to use MDF panels covered with moisture-resistant PVC film or one of the types of fiberboard - laminated hardboard. The sheet panels are about 3 mm thick and are attached to the walls with glue.
Choose only waterproof paint that will not lose its appearance after washing
For painting the walls, preparation is necessary by leveling with puttying and rubbing, otherwise the light falling from the windows will highlight all the irregularities.The work is quite difficult for a layman and will require additional financial costs, and a monochromatic painting of the walls looks rather boring and is unlikely to become an interior decoration.
It is common knowledge that waterproof acrylic paints can be washed, but this statement is not entirely true. In the area of the working area, drops of food with fat often fall on the wall, which are absorbed into the porous surface of the paint and is practically not washed off.
3D wallpaper has an unusual texture that will help to hide irregularities
The most budgetary option is wallpapering the walls; the most practical way is to do it with paintable or vinyl glass wallpaper. The latter, due to their thickness, will hide irregularities on the walls, and all types of dirt, including grease, are perfectly removed from their smooth water-repellent surface.
For finishing the working area of the kitchen, you can use the same moisture-resistant materials as for finishing the walls. It is not difficult to install PVC panels or laminated MDF and fiberboard on the wall by gluing.
When decorating a work area, it is very important to apply the coating to a flat wall. In this case, the top of the countertop will fit snugly against the wall, and the thin panels will adhere well in all places.
The currently popular tempered glass panels with a bright pattern are not quite suitable for the Provence style, the use of frosted glass will fit more.
This is a rather expensive option, and although the glass can be installed independently, it makes no sense to save on this if the cost of the material itself is much more than the installation work that takes little time (1 - 2 hours).
Glass panels look sophisticated and suitable for expensive kitchen options
Laying tiles on flat walls is easy to do with your own hands if you have the simplest tool (hydraulic level, glass cutter), the only difficulty arises when cutting out holes for sockets - you need a grinder.
Conventional wall tiles, unlike floor tiles, have a rather soft base. Therefore, it is easy to cut it in a straight line using a conventional glass cutter, drawing a line on the glaze and breaking along the notch line at a hard corner.
In order to avoid misunderstandings, it is advisable to make repairs in the kitchen according to a design project - this will allow you to select and purchase materials suitable for the interior in advance, avoiding their shortage. The sequence of repairs in the kitchen is as follows:
Freeing the room from the kitchen set and all accessories (removing the chandelier, baguette).
Dismantling of old ceiling, wall and floor coverings.
Garbage removal.
Plaster or putty, followed by cleaning the ceiling and walls.
Work on leveling the floor in the kitchen (screed, self-leveling).
Shtroblenie walls and floors in the apartment, followed by the wiring and installation of boxes for sockets and switches, the output of lighting wires. Sometimes you may need grooves for plumbing pipes, followed by the output of plumbing fittings pipes to the walls.
Ceiling decoration.
Non-experts recommend doing kitchen repairs with your own hands from top to bottom: ceiling, walls, floor, which in practice is not entirely true. For example, painted walls and ceilings at the beginning of renovation work when installing screeds, self-leveling in the kitchen, laying tiles on the floor can be heavily soiled, so it is correct to do the most dirty work first (plastering walls, screed, laying tiles on the floor and walls).
Wall decoration.
Laying the floor covering.
If the flooring is linoleum or laminate, the installation of which does without dirt and dust, and the material itself is poorly wiped off the paint, paint work should be carried out first. In the case of wallpapering, it is more practical to put the floor at the beginning, and then proceed to decorate the ceiling and walls.
It is not very difficult to make repairs in the kitchen with your own hands using the cheapest materials (wallpaper, linoleum) in the Provence style if the work is carried out in stages.The working area can be independently decorated with laminated MDF, PVC, fiberboard or tiles, in many cases it is supplied with a custom-made kitchen set.

It so happened that housewives spend a lot of time in the kitchen. And in order to be there enjoyable and pleasing to the eye, the painting of the walls in the kitchen during the renovation must be done especially carefully. If you follow certain rules, decorating is easy to do with your own hands. The interior design of the kitchen can be done according to your taste or you can take the advice of professionals. But first things first.
Wallpaper is traditional for living spaces. They look good, and gluing them to the walls is not a big problem when doing DIY repairs. In addition, this type of decor successfully hides small defects on the walls: small cracks, roughness, and the like. However, wallpapers have one property that makes them unsuitable for use in kitchens: they are afraid of high humidity, which so often happens in the kitchen during cooking.
Anyone who has been independently repairing and removing old wallpaper before gluing new ones knows the traditional way of removing old unnecessary coverings. Old wallpaper is abundantly moistened with water, as a result, they swell, and the adhesive composition softens. Due to this, with good moisture, they practically fall off the wall on their own.
That is why, after gluing the wallpaper in the kitchen during the renovation, one day you may find that they swelled up and became covered with bubbles under the influence of constant high humidity. It is good if, after drying, they sit in place and the previous look will be restored. Otherwise, you will have to do the repairs anew, and this is wasted time and money.
Based on these considerations, painting walls in kitchens is preferable to wallpapering.
Let's take a closer look at how to paint the walls in the kitchen, choose the materials necessary for this, as well as the types of paints suitable for such work.
As we have already found out, the covering of the walls of the kitchen must be moisture resistant. Since the kitchen needs to be kept clean at all times, the walls should be easy to clean without compromising the appearance of the finish. It must be ecological, free of harmful components that can harm health.
All these requirements are met by water-based and water-based paints. The cheapest one of the main components is PVA glue. Their disadvantage is low moisture resistance. The same paints, but with the addition of acrylic components, have significantly better water resistance and abrasion characteristics. Therefore, they can be recommended for high-quality kitchen renovation.
Latex and silicone-based paints have even better performance. They have high wear resistance and are well tolerated by repeated washing. Tinting (giving the required color) can be done in two ways: manually or using a computer system for selecting the desired shade. This gives a wide scope for imagination when developing the design of the kitchen.
Perhaps the only significant drawback of latex and silicone-based coatings is their rather high price. But, if you are a supporter of a durable and high-quality coating that can withstand repeated wet cleaning, you will not find a better option.
In rooms with high air humidity, professionals use latex paint to decorate the walls. Details in the video.

To paint the walls easily, and the final result is pleasing with its appearance, it is necessary to perform several mandatory operations.
First of all, it is required to rid the walls of a layer of old paint or wallpaper, if any.They are pre-wetted with water, as described above, and then removed.
If the old coating is made with a water-based emulsion that is in good condition, then it can be left. In this case, new paint is applied from above.
Old paint (oil or alkyd enamel) must be scraped off. Such work is easier to perform with a spatula and a building hairdryer. The old paint softens and swells with a hot jet of air from a hair dryer. This then gives a good opportunity to remove it relatively easily with a spatula.
After such work, the surface of the wall must be given an almost perfect even appearance. This will require a putty. To remove relatively large defects, use a starting putty, for small irregularities and finishing work - finishing.
After the putty is dry, it can be treated with a fine-grit abrasive netting. With its help, you can achieve a perfectly smooth surface.
A small detail that will be useful to improve the quality of the repair: before applying the putty, it is advisable to treat the wall surface with a deep penetration primer. The same primer, the brand of which will depend on the type of paint chosen, should be applied to the plastered walls. The primer improves adhesion to the painted surface and thereby prolongs the life of the coating. After application, the primer must dry, then you can proceed directly to painting.
Let's consider directly the painting process itself. Let's pay attention to how to paint the walls in the kitchen correctly in order to ensure a long service life and a pleasant appearance.
First of all, you need to decide on the choice of tools. These can be brushes or rollers. Brushes can be taken in different widths, with natural or artificial bristles. The main thing in choosing a brush is the convenience of working with it and the quality of paint application. It is not recommended to immerse the brush completely in the paint can, but only halfway. Otherwise, paint will drip from the brush and form streaks on the wall. Excess must be shaken off.
Rollers also come in different sizes: small, medium and large. The pile on the rollers can be made of natural fur or artificial. The length of this pile is also different, which determines the appearance of the coating, its roughness. For rollers, you need a pallet or tray, with which the paint is evenly distributed over its entire surface.
It is advisable to cover the floor in the kitchen with foil or cover with old newspapers. This will make your subsequent cleaning easier.
The skirting boards and the ceiling on the border with the walls must be pasted over with paper masking tape. It will protect you from accidentally coating where you shouldn't.
If you are doing DIY repairs, you need to know that at least two layers must be applied to ensure an even coverage.
Each layer is applied perpendicular to each other, for example, the first one vertically, then the second horizontally. This technology is applicable to both brush and roller work. Those places where it is impossible to reach with a roller are pre-treated with a brush, for example, corners and walls behind heating radiators.
Each type of paint may have its own technological features, which are indicated in the instructions for use. For example, the need to wait until the previous layer is completely dry before applying the next one.
It is customary to start painting from above, from the ceiling and cover the entire wall at a time. This will ensure an even coverage.
Of great importance in the design of any room, especially the kitchen, where the family spends a lot of time, is the color scheme. When choosing a color scheme for a kitchen interior, first of all, you need to remember that the color of the walls should be in harmony with the tone of the kitchen set, forming a single whole.
Professional psychologists specializing in interior design recommend choosing warm colors for kitchens. They increase the emotional mood and do not get tired. It can be yellow, orange, peach and similar colors.
Yellow color gives the space more volume, saturates it with energies and creates the effect of good illumination and warmth. Therefore, it is often used in the design of kitchens and children's rooms.
The color orange is believed to be able to improve stomach activity and promote good appetite. But it is recommended to use it in combination, performing individual elements with this color.
Whatever advice psychologists and designers give, in the end the final choice is yours.
This short video will help you decide on the choice of the right color scheme for painting the walls in the kitchen, showing many different examples.

When decorating a kitchen interior, you should take into account the specifics of this room and select the appropriate materials. Kitchen walls are constantly exposed to steam, quickly get dirty, burn out and lose their attractiveness, so the finish must be waterproof and resistant to mechanical stress. Decorating the walls in the kitchen with their own hands, many choose paint as the most convenient and practical finishing material. But there are other design options, no less practical, but much more attractive.

Plain paper wallpapers are not suitable for the kitchen, but vinyl, fiberglass, liquid or compressed paper-based wallpapers are widely used in such rooms. Due to the variety of textures and colors, these wallpapers can decorate the most ordinary-looking room, fill it with colors and a cozy atmosphere.
In the process of decorating the walls, you will need:
starting and finishing putty;
putty knife;
paint brush and roller;
primer;
sandpaper;
wallpaper;
wallpaper glue;
clean rags;
scissors and a sharp knife.
In order for the wallpaper to hold as firmly as possible, it is necessary to thoroughly clean the surface of the walls: remove the old wallpaper, peel off the peeling paint and plaster, wash off the whitewash. If the walls are too uneven, the old finish is removed to the very base.
The cracks in the corners need to be sewn up in order to properly repair. After that, the walls are wiped with a damp cloth, removing dust.
A clean surface is treated with a deep penetration primer mixture, which will avoid the development of mold and other microorganisms under the finish layer. Knead the starting putty and first fill in noticeable grooves and small gaps. Deep slots are filled with cement mortar, after which they dry out with a putty. When the grooves are leveled, you can cover the entire surface of the kitchen wall with putty mortar.
The thickness of the putty layer should be within 1-2 cm, thicker layers, when dry, may crack and fall behind the base. When leveling, check the plane of the wall with a rule or a wooden long strip. When the putty is completely dry, the surface is sanded with sandpaper, and then checked again with the rule. If necessary, apply another layer of mortar to make the wall as flat as possible.
The area near the stove and cutting table does not need to be pasted over - here it is better to lay out an apron from a tile.
They begin to glue from the corner: the wallpaper is cut to length, coated well with glue and left for 5 minutes to soak. In the corner, the stripes are glued with a vertical overlap so as not to leave gaps. Heavy waterproof wallpaper is glued end-to-end, otherwise the seams will stand out too much. Each strip is gently flattened, pressed against the wall and smoothed with a clean cloth or rubber spatula.Any excess glue protruding from the edges must be wiped off immediately.
How to glue wallpaper in outer corners
Liquid wallpapers are ideal for the kitchen, they look elegant and original. They are prepared very simply: the dry mixture is diluted with warm water, stirred thoroughly and left to swell for 5-10 minutes.
Next, the mixture is applied with a wide spatula to the walls and leveled, creating a certain texture. After drying, liquid wallpaper forms a seamless, durable surface that is resistant to washing and mechanical stress. If an area is accidentally damaged, it is easy to restore it by applying a small amount of the working mixture.
Decorative plaster is also great for the kitchen. It easily tolerates temperature fluctuations, high humidity, multiple cleaning from dirt. This material is very plastic, and therefore it can be given any shape and texture. An imitation of brick or masonry looks attractive on the kitchen walls, which will not be difficult to complete. Surface preparation is carried out in a standard manner, unless the leveling does not have to be done very carefully.
Water at room temperature is poured into a small container and dry plaster is poured. Using a construction mixer, the composition is mixed well and, if necessary, a coloring pigment is added. Leave the solution for 10 minutes, and then mix again until smooth.
Natural organic pigments
You can apply the solution with an ordinary or notched trowel, textured roller, paint brush and even with your hands. The relief of the wall depends on the method of application, so you should think over the desired pattern in advance. You can apply the plaster in an even layer, and then use your fingers, a thin stick, or something else to squeeze out the patterns.
To create brickwork, you need a ruler and a pencil: horizontal solid lines are drawn under the ruler on a wall covered with an even layer of mortar. At least 8 cm should remain between the lines. Next, vertical segments between the lines are pushed in a checkerboard pattern, as a result of which a neat brickwork appears. For masonry, lines are drawn arbitrarily, by hand, drawing stones of various sizes and shapes.
Create a decorative pattern with a brush
The patterns made with a notched trowel look original and unusual: for this, a solution is collected on the spatula and distributed over the surface with uniform circular movements. The depth of the grooves and their number depends on the force of pressing and the angle of inclination, which allows you to create a unique pattern.
The decorative coating should be treated with a protective compound; it can be varnish, special wax or paint. Most often, it is the paint that is used, which is necessarily waterproof and environmentally friendly. Acrylic paints based on silicone and latex are considered the most practical: they are easy to apply, dry quickly, allow the walls to breathe and do not wear off with repeated washing.
Wax for decorative plaster
Ceramic tiles are widely used to decorate kitchen walls and floors. Modern tiles are highly durable and come in a wide variety of colors, shapes and textures. The well-chosen ceramics will make the kitchen irresistible. Without the appropriate experience, revetting the walls is not so easy, but if you practice a little, everything will definitely work out.
For finishing work you will need:
ceramic tile;
tile adhesive;
notched trowel;
Bulgarian;
rubber hammer;
clean rags;
level.
The walls are prepared according to the technology described above - they are cleaned, cracks are closed, leveled and primed. If the surface is not perfectly flat, it's okay, the main thing is that the height differences do not exceed 2 cm per square meter. Small defects will be hidden by a layer of glue, so they do not affect the location of the tiles.
Scheme of the phased laying of tiles on the walls
When the preparatory process is completed, you can proceed with the cladding:
first mark the boundaries of the kitchen apron;
dilute glue;
apply glue with a notched trowel to the back of the tile;
the first row is laid out on the markup, checking its horizontal position;
lay out the second row, shifting the vertical joints in a checkerboard pattern;
if necessary, knock out the rows with a rubber hammer, wipe off the excess glue;
finish laying the apron and allow the solution to set.

Next, the wall cladding begins from the corner of the kitchen: the first row is attached to the wall along the floor line, exposing each tile horizontally.
Scheme for cutting tiles with a glass cutter
The extreme fragments are cut with a grinder into pieces of the desired width. All subsequent rows are laid with an offset of the joints, pressing firmly against the wall surface. Be sure to follow the pattern by turning the tile to the desired angle. Changing the fragments after the glue dries will be problematic, so it is better to avoid such mistakes when facing.
How to lay tiles on the wall
After completing the installation, the walls should not be touched for 5-7 days until the glue is completely dry. After the specified period, you can start grouting. This process is necessary to protect the joints from excessive moisture and deterioration, moreover, grouting gives the cladding a complete and neat look. The joints are thoroughly cleaned of glue and dust residues, wiped with a clean, damp sponge.

Knead the grout and apply it with a rubber spatula to the seams. Pressing lightly, the mixture is spread over the seam, and then carried out with a spatula and the excess is removed. So they fill in all the joints and leave for 20 minutes.
After that, they take a bucket of water, a thick sponge and begin to wash the seams. The sponge must be squeezed very well, otherwise the joints will differ in color. The seams are formed with the same sponge, making small uniform grooves.
Often, to give the seams the correct shape, a piece of durable rubber cable or a special tool - jointing - is used.
