Despite the fact that fifteen years have passed since the beginning of the release of the first version of the Nissan Terrano, the car is still extremely popular. Suffice it at least the fact that there are clubs of fans of this SUV in most countries of the world.
It all began in the not very distant 86th year, when Nissan launched a noisy advertising campaign for its first development in the field of SUVs. A three-door frame station wagon with a 2.4 liter gasoline engine was presented to the public. In the 90th year, the Terrano-I (and this is how the novelty was named) received a five-door version of the body. But here's the curious thing: the base length (2650 mm) has remained unchanged! And that's why the three- and five-door models are technically completely identical. During the ten years that this model stood on the assembly line, a very significant number of cars were produced, and to this day they faithfully serve their owners.
For the American market, Terrano was produced under the name Pathfinder (the cars were assembled directly in the USA). Most of the Pathfinders released have automatic transmissions so beloved by the Americans and there are minor differences in the suspension. The configurations also differ: if the air conditioner is rather an exception for the Terrano, then for the Pathfinder it is almost standard equipment. There are also differences in interior trim (the Pathfinder does not have a touch of austereness inherent in the Terrano). To quickly determine which Nissan is in front of you, just look at the VIN code: the Terrano starts with JN1, and the Pathfinder starts with JN8.

Body and frame
The frame of the SUV is characterized by high strength and good corrosion resistance. What, unfortunately, cannot be said about the body. On cars over ten years old, rust (or even through corrosion) is not something out of the ordinary. The design of the body and frame was developed taking into account the requirements of passive safety, and therefore the car preserves the health (and sometimes life) of its passengers quite well during accidents. It is also pleasing that with moderate "contacts" there is practically no noticeable body damage.
The cost of new original body parts is considerable, but buying inexpensive used parts or picking up non-original parts is not a problem. For example, a decent body assembly costs $ 300-500 during disassembly, and prices for used fenders and doors do not exceed $ 50-70.
Engine
The motors installed on the Terrano are distinguished by high reliability and the absence of any design flaws. True, you cannot name a diverse range of engines.
Z24 - a 2.4-liter gasoline 4-cylinder engine with a capacity of 103 hp, with a timing chain drive and two spark plugs per cylinder - was produced from 1987 to 1992. Models with single injection went to the European market (while in the markets of third countries and in the USA, there were also carburetor versions with a slightly modified ignition system).
Since the 88th year, the production (which subsequently gained the greatest popularity) began to be produced, a 3.0-liter six-cylinder gasoline engine with a timing belt drive -VG30.The power of the mono-injection engine was 130 hp. Distributed injection (since 90) has added 18 more "horses" to this figure.
Fuel consumption for cars with gasoline engines usually does not exceed 12-15 liters per 100 km.
The engine with a turbocharger TD27T with a volume of 2.7 liters and a power of 99 hp is somewhat less widespread. This is a very reliable and modern engine, however, requiring (like all diesel engines) high-quality and timely maintenance. For the market of third countries and Japan, its non-turbocharged version TD27 was produced.
Caring for the above engines is reduced to regularly changing the oil, filters, adjusting the chain tension (for Z24), replacing the timing belt (for VG30) and checking the valve clearances. The price for all filters is very humane and does not exceed $ 10 for each. In addition, most of the leading manufacturers of non-originals produce a full range of consumables for Terrano.
Transmission
The Terrano is equipped with a part-time all-wheel drive transmission. The main drive is rear, and if necessary, the front axle is connected. And since this design does not provide for any center differentials, it is categorically not recommended to use the all-wheel drive mode on asphalt.
In the rear axle, most cars have a limited slip differential - LSD, which somewhat increases cross-country ability in difficult road conditions. It must be remembered that only special oils must be poured into the LSD axle, otherwise the clutches become oily and cease to function normally.
Since automatic clutches are installed in the front wheel hubs, the front axle can be connected at speeds up to 40 km / h, but to turn it off, you need to stop and drive a few meters in reverse. Automatic clutches are the transmission's weakest point and sometimes fail due to improper use and maintenance. There is, however, the possibility of replacing automatic hubs with manual clutches. Well, if there is no possibility for replacement or repair, they can simply be locked tightly with a wire. True, in this case, the front axle will be constantly idling.
There is practically no drift for the front-wheel drive CV joints (but this is subject to a whole rubber boot.).
The transfer case is two-stage, driven by a chain drive. This is a very reliable unit. True, in difficult off-road conditions, there were cases of breakage of this very chain.
The manual transmission is only 5-speed. This unit does not have any pronounced disadvantages. The main thing here is to follow the manufacturer's instructions and fill in GL-4 gear oil (when using GL-5, especially in extreme conditions, increased wear of synchronizers is observed). Some of the cars were equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission. Recommendations for servicing boxes are standard: it is necessary to monitor the condition of the oil seals, but if oil leaks are found, do not miss the moment when its level becomes critical.
Cardan shafts are very durable and pose little to no problem. Grease fittings are installed on the crosses, and if you periodically inject them with lithium grease, then new ones will not be required soon.
Suspension
The front suspension is an independent torsion bar, 4-link, with an anti-roll bar. Rear - dependent spring, 5-lever, with anti-roll bar. Let's face it, the suspension design is very complicated, and it contains, to put it mildly, a lot of elements that require periodic replacement.
Below is a short list of the main suspension elements and their approximate cost. Prices are given for non-original parts (the box with the Nissan inscription increases the indicated amounts by two to three times).
Ball joints (4 pcs.) - $ 25-30 each, front and rear bushings (14 pcs.) - $ 10-25 each, steering tips (4 pcs.) - $ 15-20 each, shock absorber and stabilizer bushings (14 pcs.) - $ 3-5 for each, rear suspension bumpers (they are often lost) - $ 30 for each. The only comfort is that the need to replace all of the above occurs infrequently (here, of course, it all depends on the driving style and operating conditions). The average statistical figures are as follows: having completely sorted out the suspension, you can forget about it for 80 - 100 thousand km.
Sagging rear suspension springs are "interchangeable" with the VAZ-2104, and the torsion bars have wide adjustment possibilities. True, when driving on stones and curbs (and just from time to time), the torsion bar or its splines may well break, but in fairness it is worth noting that this happens infrequently.
Steering
Worm gear with hydraulic booster. The Terrano steering wheel is very informative and accurate, and the steering linkage provides for the possibility of installing a depfer (only a small number of cars are equipped with it). The weak point in the trapezium is the axis of the pendulum arm; in off-road conditions, it often not only bends, but also breaks. Off-road lovers independently strengthen the swingarm with a metal corner. Most steering tips are fitted with grease nipples and have a long service life. For reference: the landing size of the steering rod cone on cars before 93 and after is different.
In older Terranos, steering gear oil seal leaks are common.
Brakes
The brake system is dual-circuit with a vacuum booster. Front ventilated disc brakes, but the rear options are possible: either drum or ventilated disc (not common). The efficiency and reliability of the entire braking system is beyond praise. But, as with any other machine, it must be monitored: to prevent excessive wear of the pads and discs and to check the condition of the brake cylinder cuffs. Yes, it would be nice to change the brake fluid every few years.
Wheels and rims
The standard size of the SUV tires is 235 / 75R15 (with fresh springs and properly adjusted torsion bars, tires up to 31x11.5 inches can be installed). Wheel parameters: size - R15, width - 7-7.5 inches with six bolt holes, offset (ET) - negative, from minus 25 mm. Similar discs are used on most Japanese and Korean SUVs,
Salon
The Terrano salon mysteriously combines convenience and asceticism. Most cars have unpretentious velor upholstery and unpretentious window handles. But for all that, on this car you can stay behind the wheel for days and feel good. There is such a science - ergonomics!
On Terrano with injection engines, it is possible to self-diagnose all injection systems and sensors. This is very convenient because you can make a qualified diagnosis of your car without any computers there at the service stations. A diagnostic unit is installed under the front passenger seat, on which all fault codes are displayed using two LEDs. It remains only to pick up the cherished book and, with the help of a special table, determine which element or sensor is sick.
Buying a used Nissan Terrano, you get a decent and reliable car for relatively little (by off-road standards) money. Despite the fact that a lot of time has passed since the beginning of the release of this model, the car still looks quite modern and can satisfy the needs of most motorists. Tuning firms produce many different retrofit kits: engine, suspension, transmission and body lift kits. So, depending on your desire, you can achieve certain results.

But to forget that Terrano does not belong to the harsh conquerors of off-road, we strongly advise you not to.The complex independent suspension is much worse off-road than the dependent spring suspension. But at the same time it is not a "SUV". The Terrano is a very decent vehicle for versatile use.
