According to the good old tradition, journalists test the quadrics of the first Russian quad-building plant in the tail and in the mane, without any discounts and conventions. New for us "six hundred" was no exception. A test drive in combat is participation in a competition on a new technique. This is where you can really find out all the ins and outs of the apparatus and decompose it by the bones.
The second stage of Can-am Trophy Russia is quite a suitable proving ground for our tests. Looking ahead, I will say that the stage was marked by the fact that for the first time in all the years of the existence of this series, it was our team in the ATV 600 GT that finished in full force. Before us, not a single starter Stels reached the finish line.
So, what is hidden under the plastic already familiar from the older brother? Water-cooled carburetor single-cylinder engine with four valves and two camshafts in the head. The developer is the Taiwanese company Dinli. The engine, according to the manufacturer, produces 34 horsepower. Of course, for the "six hundred" - the indicator is not a record, but the main thing here is the thrust, not the peak values. Standard variator: LHNRP. Permanent rear-wheel drive without differential, rigidly coupled front-wheel drive with forced-locking diff. Electric starter and rope starter in reserve.Suspension front and rear - independent, A-shaped aluminum levers.
The driver's seat is arranged quite familiarly and ergonomically. Pleased with the parking brake lever with protection against "forgetfulness". In the on position, it is impossible to grab the steering wheel handle - the "handbrake" will interfere. It is impossible not to notice.
But I didn't like the transmission mode switch right away. And then, in the process of driving, I made sure that the first impression was not false. A round and smooth "twist" is responsible for connecting the front end and blocking the differential, which, moreover, must be pressed into the remote control before turning. To do a simple manipulation, you have to remove your hand from the steering wheel handle, which is not always safe on the go. So if the gloves are also stained with dirt, the task becomes completely non-trivial. Moreover, you have to control the switching visually. It is impossible to understand by touch what position the toggle switch is in. Which, again, is not conducive to security. Stealth people used to install consoles copied from Yamaha quadrics. Let it be plagiarism, but how convenient!
Naturally, the arsenal has a winch, two 12-volt sockets, two trunks, a tow bar and a passenger backrest. True, we abolished it before the race as unnecessary.
In general, racing a two-seater quadra is quite an exciting event. A long wheelbase, of course, contributes to directional stability, but in general, length in such events is not the best assistant. But first things first.
The race takes place in atypical conditions for the Can-Am Trophy. Steppes, ravines, slopes. There are a lot of descents and ascents - here you need traction on the bottom, stability and toothy rubber. An incredible number of long and quite straight straights, where the maximum speed and stability of the device at high speeds come out on top. The requirements, although not mutually exclusive, are not found in every quadric. At this stage, there is almost no water and dirt, which is completely uncommon. In general, the route is very fast.
Let's go! The first special stage is rather short, only 15 kilometers, and it is laid along the roads. The primers are quite rideable, even and not killed. Here you just need to turn off the gas and open the hole. Get down! And this is where the difference of 100 cubic meters begins to be felt. "Seven hundred" and accelerated more vigorously, and her maximum speed was much higher. Our quadras are capable of a maximum of eighty-kopeck kilometers per hour.
At the same time, it is felt that the motor is still far from the cutoff, and, for sure, it is possible to conjure up with the variator, subjectively, the potential is felt. You can definitely heat it up to a hundred, you just have to put your hands on it. But zealous Taiwanese, apparently, believe that it is better to choke the engine and thereby extend its life. The desire is laudable, but what a shame when you, almost like a standing one, are bypassed by competitors, and on devices that do not really surpass yours in terms of engine volume.
Another feature of the device, typical, in general, for many Stels quadrics, is rather heavy steering. Despite the long baseline, you have to constantly adjust the course. In this case, you have to put a little more effort on the steering wheel than we would like.
The second SU is full of ravines. Of course, according to the plan of the organizers, everyone should drive only on the roads, but who knows where that road is? But the control point, here it is, right on the course, behind the ravine. Naturally, we are breaking straight. The quad does an excellent job with descents. The engine braking function is very helpful. The climbs are good too. In a low gear, with a locked diff, the 600GT confidently climbs the slopes close to 40 degrees. The Maxxis Bighorn tires are also not bad. Although, in specific conditions, I would like a rubber with a larger and thinner tooth, but this is nit-picking. Mxxis showed itself, as usual, at its best. Only a couple of times during the entire race we had to help the quadriks to climb especially steep slopes. By the way, it was here, on the slopes and ascents, that the long base of the apparatus made life much easier.The tendency to overturn in the "600" is noticeably lower than that of the classic short wheelbase classmates. The beauty of a long wheelbase is that on uphills, when the wheels begin to slip on dry, dusty ground, it is very convenient to stand with your feet directly on the rear arches. In this position, the quadric "with its nose to the sky", the weight distribution changes noticeably, the rear axle is loaded and the quadric is selected from a seemingly hopeless situation.
The bottom of the ravines, the foot of the hills and practically all the lowlands here, near Stavropol, are covered with the so-called "rapids". In the spring, during the period of active snow melting, water rushes from the hills to the lowlands, flows down to the bottom of the ravines. At the same time, it noticeably softens the upper layers of the soil, and they slide down, collecting there, as it were, in folds. Naturally, by the end of spring, when the southern sun is hot as it should, the soil dries up and hardens. The height and period of these threshold waves vary from several tens of centimeters to almost a meter. At the same time, the relief itself is hidden under tall grass and bushes, so you drive almost blindly. Honestly, it’s hard to come up with a more inappropriate place for riding a quad, except for frozen arable land.
In general, the speed of movement is two to three kilometers per hour. The quad is almost constantly in a diagonal hanging position, or sticks out with its nose in the ground, or tilts dangerously. What is under the wheels is not visible. This is where steering features come up again. Every pothole that gets under the wheel tries to knock the steering wheel out of his hands. The steering is very sensitive to the terrain. A sort of hypertrophied feedback. My hands are very tired at the end of the day. Yes, and the beautiful half of humanity will probably be too hard. Since the problem is systemic, in the sense that it is characteristic not only for this model, perhaps the manufacturer should pay attention to it.
The last thing I would like to mention is the clearly under-tuned suspension. Perhaps this is an attempt to reduce the cost of a budget device, nevertheless, I really want to change the standard shock absorbers for something more advanced. Surprisingly, despite the long base and rather impressive weight, the device is very prone to wagging aft. Overcoming bumps and springboards, and practically any irregularities, it throws the stern into the air very hard. Naturally, since almost never potholes are symmetrical under both wheels, each toss of the stern is accompanied by a slight shift thereof to the right or left. In short, you have to constantly catch the quad (which I already mentioned). Although, it is worth mentioning that I am now talking about the racing mode of operation. In ordinary dacha-pokatushechny life, and even in native Central Russian mud, this effect will not be so noticeable. Again, a quadric implies the presence of a passenger and a load, so, perhaps, the stiffness of the shock absorbers was calculated precisely for the full load, at which they will behave more adequately.
And here it is, the finish line! We have covered the distance! We drove a trophy-raid of the all-Russian level on quadrics that have never reached the finish line! You can summarize.
The Stels ATV 600 GT is a well-balanced device, suitable not only for summer riding, but also for serious competitions, and out of the box. The only tweaks we did before the race were full underbody protection and suspension arms. It lacks a little power for such flat high-speed races, but on the familiar forest-swamp-windbreak tracks, it will feel like a fish in water, in no way inferior to more eminent and expensive competitors.

For complete happiness, you can only replace the shock absorbers with adjustable ones. Well, for perfectionists - to conjure with a variator. Perhaps this is the first ATV in the history of the Stels brand, which can be called a completely finished, not raw and balanced apparatus. Bravo!
