Lacquer restoration is a complex process that requires skill, the availability of the necessary tools and consumables. If small cracks appear, the master cleans them with a fine-grained abrasive cloth, brushes off the formed dust, smoothes and applies with a special brush painted shoe nitro-varnish, carefully matched to the color of shoes or boots.
In the Aleganna workshop, we advise each client on the possibilities of shoe restoration, since there are damages that cannot be repaired. That is why we strongly advise you to immediately pay attention to even the smallest defects, since the varnish does not tolerate negligence.
The varnish coating, due to its low elasticity (less than that of leather), tends to form cracks both during the manufacture of shoes (during the tightening process) and during the wearing process.
Small cracks on the luscious film without damaging the skin are cleaned with a pumice stone or fine-grained abrasive paper until the damage is completely eliminated and dust is removed. Then the cleaned area is ironed with an iron heated to a temperature of no more than 100 degrees, after which a colorless nitro varnish for shoes, painted with an alcohol-soluble dye in the desired color, is applied with a squirrel brush (for black shoes - black varnish).
Cracks of patent leather are usually formed during the period of wearing (the varnish film cracks with the skin). In this case, it is necessary to restore the damaged areas of the skin itself, which forms the basis of the varnish coating, followed by overlapping with colorless varnish.
The technological process of sealing cracks in patent leather shoes includes the following operations: washing the upper of the shoe, smoothing the upper of the shoe, repairing through damage, priming the surface of the shoe, sealing cracks, applying the floor and ureth of a new coating to the upper of the shoe.
Washing the upper of the shoe from dirt before repairing.The surface of the shoes is wiped with a swab soaked in acetone, and then dried for 20-30 minutes at a temperature of 20'C.
Smoothing of the shoe top in places of damage (cracks and folds) is carried out with a hot roller of silt and tokmach through a fluoroplastic plate 50-90 mm wide. To prevent melting of the lacquer film, the hot roller should move evenly black, not lingering in one place.
Repairing through damage includes repairing the lining with patches of lining leather or double-layer tarpaulin. Adhesive is applied to the inner patch and shoe lining around the through crack.
If the liner has come off the top, glue is applied between the liner and the liner. Without letting the glue dry, the patch is applied and pressed tightly with your hand, bringing the edges of the cracks as close as possible. The metal hardware on the shoe is covered with rubber glue to protect it from the pigmented urethane coating. Shoes are dried for 3-5 minutes at a temperature of 18-20'C, after which they are put on the shoes.
The priming of the surface of shoes made of natural varnish is made with UR-3 glue, which is an 8-10% solution of UK-1 polyurethane in acetone. The primer is applied evenly on the entire surface of the shoe with a thin layer of a soft brush, followed by drying for at least 1 hour and no more than 24 hours.

When you buy patent leather boots, boots or shoes, you need to understand that you will have to wear them very carefully. The material is very delicate, so scratches and cracks form quite quickly. And their presence greatly affects the appearance of the product. If, nevertheless, some kind of defect has formed, then efforts must be made to eliminate it. Let's figure out how to remove scratches on leather shoes.
First you need to wash it from dirt and street dust. You can use a soapy solution for this. The water temperature should not be too high. Also, do not add a lot of soap. It is enough to press the liquid soap dispenser once and add a couple of liters of water. Soak a clean, dry cloth in the solution and wipe the patent leather well. After the dirt has completely disappeared, wipe off the shoes with a well wrung out damp cloth. This is necessary so that soap stains and traces of water drops do not remain on the skin surface. Next, wipe the shoes dry with a paper towel and leave to dry completely in a warm room for several hours.
It is advisable to put crumpled newspapers or paper towels inside the shoes. This will avoid deformation of products due to excess moisture. After complete drying, you must use one of the methods of dealing with scratches and other damage to patent leather shoes, which we will consider below.
Putting paper towels inside the shoe to avoid deformation due to moisture
Oddly enough, you can use a regular eyeliner to mask a deep scratch on your patent leather shoes. To do this, match it to the color of the shoe and slide it over the scratch. Blend a little with a cotton pad or sponge. You will have to repeat the operation periodically, especially if you find yourself in this pair in wet weather.
If it happens that a piece of leather has come off partially or completely from the shoe, then this can be fixed with glue. Regular clear nail polish can also help. There are also specialized types of glue for leather. For example, in stores there are leather glue brands such as Lederzentrum, Leather glue PU, Schuh & Leder, PVA Brauberg and others. If you urgently need to glue the torn off part, and there is no special tool at hand, you can use ordinary superglue. It is necessary to very carefully apply it to the boot and press it down thoroughly with a clean material. Leave a couple for the glue to dry completely, according to the instructions on the package. After the expiration of time, check the quality of your work, the skin should not puff up.
To solve this problem, nail polish is also useful, but already of the corresponding color for the shoe. So, how to remove scratches on varnished shoes using this method - you need to gently apply a layer of varnish to the scratch with a brush. When it's completely dry, you can apply a thin layer of fixer on top. The disadvantage of this method is the fragility of the repair. Indeed, after a couple of weeks, the operation will have to be repeated again.
If the damage is more serious than minor scratches, it is necessary to use already special products for patent leather.This refers to damage such as a deep scratch or large abrasion. To begin with, you should use a special protective wax for the skin. It can be purchased at shoe stores or online. An alternative is paraffin wax from a candle or plain beeswax.
Rub the damaged area well with one of the above products and dry with a dry cloth. Once you have repaired all the scratches, you need to treat them on top with a special patent leather cleaner. The product must have gloss renewal and shine properties. These can be, for example, funds of the following brands - Saphir Vernis rife, Olvist, Erdal and others. You can also buy them in shoe stores or order online.
Now a truly unique Liquid Leather product has appeared on the market. Translated into Russian - liquid skin. The product is designed to repair serious damage to shoes and other leather products. It comes in a variety of colors, and you can choose the right one for you. The tool is intended both for repairing scuffs and for gluing torn areas. Moreover, if you did something wrong, applied an insufficient amount or chose the wrong color, you can easily remove this tool.
After you apply "liquid skin" to the product, it merges with it. In terms of strength, it will not be inferior to real leather.
Before applying, lightly sand the damaged area with a non-hard emery paper. This must be done very carefully so that the abrasion does not become even greater. Next, wipe the area with alcohol to completely degrease it. Apply an even layer of liquid leather and leave to dry for 10 minutes. Repeat a few more coats as needed for perfect results. Next, it is worth treating the place with the agent that gives shine to the patent leather, which was mentioned earlier. Let the shoes dry thoroughly for three to four hours.
It is quite possible to remove scratches on patent leather shoes at home. But, before starting work, you should assess the degree of damage - for serious defects you will need more effective means. It is important to understand that you cannot completely get rid of deep scratches - they can only be masked. But small surface irregularities and abrasions after processing with correctly selected compounds will disappear without a trace.
To fix the problem, you can use one of these tools:
- wax;
- nail polish;
- glue;
- liquid skin;
- Eyeliner.
Before you start repairing shoes, you need to prepare the surface - remove dust from it, wipe it with a damp cloth, and then wait until it dries completely.
Suitable for deep scratches and other damage to the lacquered surface. Any wax can be used, including that obtained from a melted candle.
The substance is heated to make it soft, cover the scratched area of the patent shoe with a thin layer. Leave for a few minutes to harden the wax. The excess is removed by polishing the surface with a piece of soft cloth. After that, the treated area is carefully tinted with a shoe cream of a suitable color.
With the help of varnish, small defects are quickly eliminated. It is important that the color of the liquid completely matches the shade of the shoe.
- 1. A small amount of varnish is applied to the brush, gently rubbing it along the entire length of the scratch.
- 2. Leave to dry for a while.
- 3. After the liquid has solidified, apply a thin layer of varnish again.
The disadvantage of this method is its fragility. After a few weeks, the varnish will peel off and the scratch will be visible again.
Superglue is used when the damage is very deep, or there are cracks on the shoe. This quick-drying liquid will help restore your boot or boot to its original appearance.
- 1. Superglue is applied to a toothpick or match.
- 2.Carefully treat the damaged area with it.
- 3. Take a piece of clean cloth to match the shoe, apply to the scratch area, press. Keep it for 5 minutes.
- 4. Carefully peel off the fabric, inspect the surface.
- 5. If a visible trace remains from the scratch, repeat all described actions.
- 6. Using paint or nail polish, cover the repaired area with a thin brush.
For products made of thin leather, it is recommended to use BF-2 glue or ordinary Moment glue.
This is a special composition for removing various defects in leather products. It is also effective when it is required to remove scratches from patent leather shoes.
In order to repair the damage, you should:
- 1. Gently sand the area around the scratch with fine sandpaper.
- 2. Wipe the cleaned area with a cotton pad moistened with any degreasing agent (for example, alcohol).
- 3. Apply a thin layer of liquid leather to the prepared surface of the shoe.
- 4. Leave for a quarter of an hour to dry the composition.
- 5. Use a soft cloth to buff the restored skin.
If the scratch is deep, you will need to apply several layers of liquid leather. A 15-minute break should be taken between each application to allow the substance to harden.
This method brings only a temporary result, however, if you need to quickly put your shoes in order, you can use it.
A soft movement is carried out over the scratch with a pencil of a shade suitable for the color of the shoe. With a piece of cloth, carefully remove the excess, polish the surface.
Another problem faced by patent shoe owners is the appearance of scuffs. Small damage can be removed with improvised means, but to get rid of serious damage, professional repair compounds will be required.
At home, to cope with scuffs will help:
First, gently traverse the problem area with an eraser. The movement should not be too strong, otherwise the abrasion will only increase. Then they clean the surface from traces of the eraser using an alcohol-coated piece of cloth. Then a clean flap is impregnated with mineral oil and the liquid is rubbed in with massaging movements. If everything is done correctly, the scuffs after such treatment will disappear.
Using these tools, you can quickly return the shoe to its previous appearance. If the damage is too serious, you will not be able to do it yourself. In this case, it is recommended to give the shoes to a repair specialist, because trying to fix the situation with your own hands can lead to permanent damage to the product.
