In detail: do-it-yourself repair of the vaz 2108 oil pump from a real master for the site my.housecope.com.
Welcome! It happens in life, the oil pump has broken and it must either be repaired or replaced, because it will be expensive to drive on a broken one, since the car's engine will start to consume much more engine oil than is required. But nevertheless, most likely people will first prefer to take on its repair, and there is no need to immediately change the oil pump to a new one, and maybe there is only one part that is faulty and because of it all these problems.
Note! Before starting all work, be sure to remove the oil pump from the car, using the article: "Replacing the oil pump". By the way, from this one you will also learn for yourself the location of the oil pump heading: "Where is the oil pump?" and what will happen to the car if the oil pump is faulty heading: "When do you need to change the oil pump?"!
Dismantling and repair of the oil pump: 1) First, prepare a flat and clean surface that will be comfortable to work on. And after preparation, put the removed oil pump on this surface and get to work.
2) At the beginning of work, unscrew the six bolts that secure the cover of the oil pump to its body.
3) Next, slightly lift the housing of the oil pump with two screwdrivers, and make sure that the dowel pins of the housing come out of the holes in the oil pump cover and, as a result, remove the oil pump housing from the cover.
4) Now putting the oil pump housing aside, take its cover in your hands and remove the pump drive gear from this cover.
Note! Immediately below the pinion gear is the driven one, which must also be removed!

5) Next, unscrew the plug of the pressure relief valve from the cover of the oil pump.
Note! There is an aluminum sealing ring under the plug of the pressure reducing valve; if it is strongly compressed or damaged, then replace it with a new one!
6) Then remove the small spring of the relief valve.
Note! If the removed spring is cracked or broken or bent, then replace it with a new one. If there are no complaints about the spring, then measure its height, which should be "44.72 mm" in the free state and "31.7 mm" under load, otherwise replace the spring!
7) Now gently tap the oil pump cover on a flat, clean wooden board to remove the pressure relief valve.
Note! In the event that the pressure reducing valve cannot be removed, then remove it with a sharpened wooden stick, for this insert the stick into the valve and then remove it!
8) Next, visually inspect the oil pump cover. If in the area where the gears are found there are traces of scoring, deep scratches and traces of wear, then replace the oil pump cover with a new one.
9) After that, take the oil pump body in your hands and carefully inspect it, if you find deep scratches, traces of wear and various scuffs on it, replace the body with a new one.
10) Now using a vernier caliper, measure the diameter of the socket for the driven gear on the oil pump housing.
Note! As you can see in the photo, the diameter of the socket should be "75.1 mm", if it turns out to be larger, then replace the case!
11) Then, using the same caliper, measure the thickness of the segment in the middle of the body.
Note! If the thickness is less than "3.4 mm", then replace the body!
12) Then take the drive gear in your hands and measure its thickness, which should not be less than "7.42 mm". In the event that the thickness is less, then replace the gear.
13) Next, take the driven gear of the oil pump in your hands and if its thickness is less than "7.35 mm", then replace it with a new one.
14) Now check the axial clearances of both gears, for this:
• First, install the drive gear in the oil pump housing, and put a metal ruler of a suitable size on top and check the gap between the ruler and the gear with a feeler gauge.
Note! If the axial clearance is higher than "0.12 mm", then replace the drive gear with a new one!
• Now, in exactly the same way, check the axial clearance at the driven gear, and if it is more than "0.15 mm", then replace the gear with a new one.
15) Then visually inspect the seat of the pressure relief valve and if there are various kinds of scuffs and deep scratches on its inner surface, replace the oil pump cover with a new one.
16) Next, take the previously removed pressure reducing valve in your hands and check its surface for scoring and deep scratches. If seizures and scratches are present, then replace the pressure reducing valve with a new one.
Assembly: 1) At the beginning of the operation, install the driven gear in the oil pump housing.
Note! When installing, make sure that the chamfers on the gear teeth are facing the oil pump housing!
2) Then install the pinion gear in the oil pump housing.
Note! When installing the gear, be sure to make sure that the chamfers on the gear teeth are facing the oil pump housing!
3) Next, install the oil pump cover on the housing and, as a result, tighten all six cover bolts.
4) Now, with the help of engine oil, coat the entire pressure reducing valve and then install it in its place with the bottom down.
Note! After installing the valve, install its spring and then screw the plug with an aluminum O-ring!
5) Then, using a syringe or a rubber bulb, pour engine oil into the oil pump through the hole under the oil receiver.
Note! It is recommended to fill the engine oil in the oil pump of the same brand that you have filled in the engine!
6) And finally, turn the oil pump gears a few turns so that their working surfaces are lubricated.
During the operation of the car, various situations arise in which the unit can be repaired or replaced. Such a need arises when the VAZ 2108/2109 oil pump breaks down. If you continue to operate a car with a broken mechanism, there is a high probability of engine failure. To save money, the unit can not only be replaced with your own hands, but also repaired.
The oil pump in the design of the engine of every car is an important and integral mechanism, which is designed to create a certain pressure in the engine lubrication system. The designs of the assembly are different and can be driven by means of a camshaft or crankshaft.
On such common models as the VAZ 2108/2109, the device for circulating the oil in the system is located behind the crankshaft pulley. Looking under the hood, it will not work out so easily: this can be done only after removing the crankshaft pulley from the engine.
The pump is fastened to the cylinder block with six bolted connections, which ensures reliable fixation of the entire structure.
The first thing that will indicate the occurrence of problems with the oil pump is an illuminated oil pressure light. In this case, the element indicates that there is a problem in the motor lubrication system. How serious they are is for the car owner to find out. In addition to checking the pressure, attention should be paid to oil consumption.If the pressure in the lubrication system of the power unit decreases, the vehicle should not be operated until the cause is established and the repair is made. The main symptoms of problems in the system are a lit light bulb or the appearance of a knock in the motor.
Actions to be taken in the event of a breakdown:
stop and turn off the engine;
wait a while for the oil to flow into the engine crankcase, then check its level with a dipstick. If the level is minimum, you need to top up to the norm;
start the engine;
if the oil pressure lamp continues to burn, extraneous noise is still heard from the engine, this may indicate a possible malfunction with the oil pump.
It is not necessary to dismantle the mechanism to test the mechanism. For diagnostic purposes, it is required to measure the pressure in the lubrication system and compare with those readings that correspond to the standards of a particular car. Based on the results obtained, one can draw conclusions: is there a reason for concern or not. If it is necessary to replace the oil pump with a VAZ 2108/2109, it is recommended to use only original parts. This is explained by the fact that many of the components for the cars of the domestic auto industry are produced today. However, their quality is poor.
When replacing the oil pump, it is recommended to purchase an original part to avoid problems due to poor workmanship
If possible, you can check the performance of the oil pump at a special stand. The essence of such a test is to assess the performance and pressure generated by the device, as well as the pressure at which the pressure reducing valve is triggered. When testing the pump using a stand, a special oil with a temperature of +20 ˚С is used. For an oil pump on a VAZ 2108/2109 engine, the capacity should be within 34 l / min, the back pressure should be 5 kg / cm². The pressure reducing valve must open at a pressure of 5.5–7.5 kg / cm². If the valve is checked on the motor using a pressure gauge, which is installed instead of the oil pressure sensor, the valve must operate at a pressure of at least 4.5 kg / cm².
Before deciding to repair or replace the oil pump, it is worth understanding the reasons that may indicate a problem. By the way, problems are possible not only with the mechanism itself, but also with other elements of the lubrication system:
decrease in pressure in the crankcase of the motor;
malfunctions of pressure sensors;
operation of low quality engine oil;
the use of oil that is not suitable for this car;
malfunctioning lubrication or safety valve;
clogged oil filter;
contamination of the oil receiver or pump housing.
Contamination of the oil receiver leads to a decrease in pressure in the system and the light bulb
Clogging can occur due to contamination of the engine crankcase itself. The problem is solved by removing and cleaning the pallet. The operation of the oil pump can be disrupted by other problems that are identified during the diagnostic process. These include:
damage to the gasket;
unreliable filter attachment;
high wear of the mechanism parts;
breakage of the pressure reducing valve.
The oil pump belongs to a fairly reliable unit with a long service life. Breakdowns, as a rule, occur due to illiterate repairs or poor quality lubricants.
Having found out that the oil pump needs replacement or repair, it is necessary to remove the mechanism from the engine.
In order to dismantle the unit, you will need a standard motorist's set, consisting of the following list:
keys for "10" and "13";
socket heads;
extension cord;
cardan joints.
If the work will be carried out on an injection engine, and not on a carburetor one, then the crankshaft position sensor will need to be removed from the engine. Otherwise, the dismantling of the mechanism is performed in the same sequence:
To reassemble, follow these step-by-step instructions:
Before assembling the assembly, set the pinion gear appropriately. Before installing the oil pump in place, the drive gear should be set in a certain position
The gear must match the corresponding flats on the crankshaft. The pinion gear must match the flats on the crankshaft
Before installing the mechanism, lubricate the working edge of the front crankshaft oil seal with engine oil. Before installing the pump, the sealing edge of the oil seal is coated with engine oil.
After lubricating the sealing element and installing it, carefully install the oil pump on the crankshaft. Then the pump fasteners are wrapped. After lubricating the oil seal with engine oil and installing it in its seat, the pump is installed
Install all remaining parts that were removed to replace the oil pump in reverse order.
