Once, with a light hand, they loaded me with a USB SD-card reader. They said that it still does not work well, take, they say, for details.

Naturally, I wanted to fix it. Thing is sometimes necessary, especially when the computer does not have a slot for SD memory cards.

The problem was that although the card reader was detected when connected to a computer, it did not show the contents of the memory card.

In a series of several attempts, it happened that the memory card was read, but somehow unpredictably, with failures. And when I clicked on the icon of the card reader, the following message was displayed, although the SD card was connected.

Without really understanding the cause of the failures, I decided to replace the USB connector. Hastened. This did not solve the problem.

The next detail on which my gaze fell was the memory slot itself. Yes, the one with a bunch of sliding contacts. The difficulty was that it is very difficult to get to the contacts of this connector - the metal cover interferes.

But, turning the reader in my hands, I noticed that the slot cover can be easily unfastened, as it is fixed on the plastic base with latches. Having slightly tucked one of the sides of the metal cover, I easily removed it.

The only thing that can interfere with the removal of the cover is the contact of the cover, which is soldered to the common wire of the printed circuit board. In my case, this contact was poorly soldered, and therefore the metal cover was removed without problems. Then I did not pay much attention to it, and, as it turned out, in vain.

If you look closely at the memory card slot, you will notice that it has two spring contacts. First (1) serves to determine the position of the SD card in the slot. It closes to the common wire after the memory card is fully inserted into the slot.

Second contact (2) Determines if erasure (deletion) protection of files on the SD card is enabled.

As you can see, these 2 contacts serve as some kind of "eyes" for the card reader. And the metal cover of the memory card slot serves as a common contact, which is soldered to the common wire on the printed circuit board.

If this metal cover does not fit well with the common wire on the PCB, then malfunctions occur. The control microcircuit on the printed circuit board of the card reader considers that there is no memory card in the slot and does not “see” it. To fix this problem, you just need to solder the common contact of the metal cover. Here he is in the photo.
