Of course, all this in spite of either the complex transmission, or the presence of any type of automatic transmission, "hand-outs" and other attributes of an "almost SUV" of increased convenience. Compromise is, frankly, harder to find than the square root of a negative number, but there are no rules without exceptions. And it seems to us that Mitsubishi ASX can pretend to be such a car. With reservations and assumptions, but it can.

A person who does not consciously choose a car and does not read tons of useful and not very material about crossovers is unlikely to pay attention to the ASX. The car appeared in 2010, and in five years on the road, it has never been the subject of heated design debate like the controversial Nissan Juke.

Initially, the ASX was supposed to become a car for those who like not to drive a crossover, but to drive it both in the tail and in the mane. The letters ASX themselves mean Active Sport X-over, which, you see, provokes. In America, this car is known under the name Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, which immediately leads to two thoughts: firstly, this is an Outlander, and secondly, a sporty one. So it is, because the ASX platform has long been known precisely for the Outlander XL, and at the same time for the tenth Lancer.

Recall that the Outlander XL appeared in 2005, and the tenth Lancer - in 2007. Thus, by the time the ASX was released, the platform was already well circumvented, moreover, Citroën C-Crosser, Peugeot 4007 and, which may seem strange, Dodge Caliber were built on it.

The ASX prototype was ready back in 2007, but the car has been mass-produced since 2010, a year later than its debut in the car market of its homeland. The first ASX engine was a 1.8-liter turbodiesel, but today the buyer can choose one of three gasoline engines of 1.6, 1.8 or 2 liters, and the same 1.8-liter diesel is available in Europe.

The petrol two-liter engine produces 150 "horses". A machine with just such a unit (model 4B11) will become the subject of our study. By the way, the same engines are installed on Kia Cerato, Kia Optima, Kia Sportage, Hyundai Elantra, Hyundai ix35 and Hyundai Sonata. Our car has a four-wheel drive and a variator instead of the usual gearbox.

As I said, the ASX lineup is familiar to many from the Outlander and Lancer models. In general, these are good motors, if there are complaints about their work, then only the owners of cars with a 1.6-liter engine. Most often, the remarks are caused by detonation at high speeds, but after 2012 the firmware has changed, and now the manufacturer promises to get rid of this phenomenon. They say that the measure did not help everyone. Well, God bless him, our in-line gasoline engine with a volume of two liters does not have such disadvantages. But there is one advantage, though hidden for many. The fact is that on cars destined for Europe, this engine develops 165 hp. But especially for the tax service of the Russian Federation on our cars this motor was “strangled” by the manufacturers to 150 “horses”. We are honored and praised for this, because after buying the ASX, no one bothers to install another firmware, thus restoring the status quo and adding 15 “heads” to the “herd” at once without any interference with the hardware. In this case, the resource of the motor should not be affected in any way. However, it is not so easy to do this on our own, so we will try to perform simpler procedures with our own hands.

TO-1 from a dealer will cost about 15,000 rubles. What are they doing there? They change oil, filters, carry out a control examination. Actually, the set of works is standard enough and not so complicated to give so much money for it. Moreover, all this is very easy to do on your own.The cost of TO-2 for officials ranges from 35 to 40 thousand, but in another service the same work was estimated at 15,000.

Oil change is performed in the same way as on dozens (if not hundreds) of other cars. You will need the oil itself, a filter and a sealing washer. From tools - socket head 17 mm. The filter is conveniently located, so there will be no difficulties with the work, and the price of dirty hands will be about 600 rubles - this is how much they will take for work in an unofficial service.

It is even easier to change the air filter. Here, however, the cost of the filter itself can upset - about 1,000 rubles. But you can change it with one hand, even with your left, and even if it does not grow from the shoulder. All the work is to fold back the two latches, which are clearly visible from above, pull out the old filter and insert a new one. True, in the service they will take only 200 rubles for this.

The drive of the gas distribution mechanism is chain, therefore, we will not talk about its independent replacement. The resource of the chain is quite high, and, according to the workshop specialists, the chain mechanism is made reliably, they did not have to observe premature stretching or other possible defects in the timing drive.

ASX provides an excellent opportunity to assert itself when replacing plugs. The main thing is to find where they stand. The spark plugs are covered with a plastic cover that is secured with three 10mm cap screws and should not be confused with the engine cover. The cover we need is on the back of the engine. However, if difficulties arise even with its search, then it is better to throw out the tool and never again approach the car with the keys in your life. Ignition coils are on each spark plug, so you first need to unscrew the coil connector, remove it by pulling it towards you, and only then turn the spark plug out. In the same way, you can replace a flabby coil. In a car service, greedy men will take from 600 to 800 rubles for replacing candles.

Mitsubishi ASX is a popular five-seater compact crossover, produced since 2010. Tuning of this car is usually carried out in specialized ateliers, but some options for its modernization can be realized with your own hands.

In 2014, the car we are considering underwent restyling. After the modernization, the crossover became lighter by a couple of tens of kilograms - the designers removed the parking brake block.

In addition, an additional lamp was installed on the head optics, and the suspension was slightly reconfigured, which, according to experts, had a beneficial effect on the car's handling. And here is another change concerning the switching of the drive, many experts called it unsuccessful.The engineers installed a button on the Mitsubishi ASX instead of a washer. And to switch to front-wheel drive mode from standard 4WD, the driver has to press this very button twice. First, the clutch is moved to the 4WD Lock position and only after that to the front-wheel drive mode.

Its creators positioned Mitsubishi ASX as an environmentally friendly and maximally safe crossover for the surrounding nature. To emphasize this feature of the car, a special color Kawasemi was used for its painting - an unusual shade of the blue color familiar to everyone. It is believed that this is the color of the kingfisher bird, which lives exclusively near clean lakes and rivers. The compact car of interest to us in 2012 was recognized by the US Institute of Motion as the safest vehicle for fast and active driving.

An unfortunate drawback of the Mitsubishi ASX, all its owners call the poor sound insulation of the car. When driving, the sounds of the engine and the wheels of the car are very well heard in the cabin. Special tuning allows you to solve this problem. It involves the complete replacement of standard soundproofing with high-quality materials. To protect the hood (its lid) from unnecessary sounds, it is recommended to use Comfortmat Gold G3 products. This material has excellent vibration damping characteristics. It is also advisable to additionally cover the ACX factory insulation with a layer of Splen, a well-known and effective noise insulator.

The roof of the crossover is protected from noise with a 3mm thick material Dark D3 from Comfortmat. It not only dampens vibrations, but also makes the metal more skeletal. Due to this, when the roof of a car interacts with small foreign objects, dents and traces of punching do not appear on it. An 8–12 mm layer of Felton, a moisture resistant acoustic felt, must be attached to the ceiling in the cabin. Such material has a high density and perfectly dampens external noise. Its price, however, is high. But the sound absorption effect achieved by the felt is worth it.

ASX doors are first soundproofed with a 3mm layer of Comfortmat Dark D3. And then Start Fi foil products from the same manufacturer are applied to it. This layer protects the machine from the negative effects of moisture. Working with Start Fi is quite simple. The material is attached to a special mastic, not glue. The last step in the door noise protection procedure is the installation of the Bibiton layer. The luggage compartment, the floor in the passenger compartment and the wheel arches of the crossover are insulated with different products. Optimal results can be achieved with Ultra Loker, a thick (5 mm) and truly effective material. It is not very convenient to work with it (the vibration absorber must be heated to a certain temperature in special ovens before use).

But in the end you get a high quality Mitsubishi ASX underbody protection from wheel and engine noise. The wheel arches and floor can also be overlaid with Comfortmat Felton or some other material (e.g. felt). The main thing is that its thickness is at least 1 cm. The trunk (its cover), as a rule, is first protected from vibration, and then from extraneous sounds. All work is carried out using the materials described above. You are unlikely to succeed in making high-quality soundproofing with your own hands. The operation is time-consuming and laborious. After all, you will have to disassemble the entire interior, and then reassemble it. Therefore, it is better to trust such works to specialists from a tuning studio and service station.

The described Japanese crossover appeared on the Russian market relatively recently. But its unique characteristics quickly made the car popular. Mitsubishi ASX can be found more and more often on the streets of our cities. In fact, the car has become an expensive, but still a mass product. Naturally, each of its owners wants to highlight their own crossover, give it a special flavor, and make it purely individual. It is possible. Tuning the exterior and interior is able to make the car in question truly original. It is important not to be too clever and not to spoil the idea of ​​Japanese designers with inept actions.

Professionals advise to carry out such types of modernization of the crossover, which improve its operational characteristics, the interior of the cabin and the external appearance, without affecting the complex components and assemblies of the vehicle. You can actually make the following improvements with your own hands:

  1. Protect the paintwork of the machine from scratches and chips by means of special films. Such products protect the crossover from damage and additionally give it an unusual look. You can, for example, use carbon fiber films. They will make the Mitsubishi ASX sportier.
  2. Bring new paint to the car interior. Many drivers consider its interior to be quite austere. Everything here is elementary - order a more expressive (and maybe even challenging in execution) upholstery and drag the interior. Install LED strips. Such styling of the interior is now deservedly popular. And in the cabin of the ACX there is enough space and nooks that can be illuminated.
  3. Equip the crossover with the most modern electronics, from the installation of a smart-sounding audio system in the car and ending with the installation of anti-radar devices and wireless cameras.

What do tuning studio and auto design experts not recommend doing? First of all, they do not advise changing the regular Mitsubishi ASX seats. Factory designs have an anatomical shape, due to which they are particularly convenient. A driver in such a seat will be able to overcome even a very long road without the slightest fatigue. It is also undesirable to perform independent chip tuning of the crossover. At the moment, there are no high-quality firmwares for these cars. Therefore, chipping their engines can lead to not the best consequences. Although some Mitsubishi ASX owners, who ordered chip tuning in professional ateliers, were satisfied with the engine upgrade.

Theoretically, professionally made changes to the electronic control unit make it possible to slightly (by 1–1.2 liters) reduce gasoline consumption, improve the dynamics of the crossover and increase the engine power. In practice, things may turn out differently. By and large, now you can do chip tuning of the ACX exclusively at your own peril and risk. It may not be worth it.

And now we want to tell you about the most interesting and common ways of tuning the Japanese crossover in question. All the improvements that will be discussed make it possible to make the car more beautiful and more practical in operation. Standard Mitsubishi ASX foglights sometimes burst. This is due to the accumulation of moisture on the overheated glass of the lamp or small stones falling on it while driving.

Protecting the fog lights is easy enough. You need to install a special plastic mesh under the lining of the lights (protection from debris) and arm the foglights with special films (they protect the glass from excessive overheating). If you want to set a new value for the service interval in the standard on-board computer of the crossover, follow these simple steps:

  1. Switch off the ignition.
  2. Press the INFO button several times (until the remaining time before scheduled maintenance and the total vehicle mileage appears on the monitor). Then hold it for 3 seconds. in a clamped state (until you hear a characteristic signal).
  3. Release INFO, and then repeat three times the steps outlined in paragraph 2. As a result, you will see the EU10 code on the monitor. It shows the interval we need.
  4. Press INFO three times. Then the letters and numbers on the display will start flashing.
  5. Use the same button to select a new GCC interval. It is done!
