At the moment, the Volvo manufacturer does not prescribe clutch maintenance in the maintenance regulations (only upon failure). There is no oil drain plug on the coupling itself, only a technical hole for filling and checking the level.
It is safe to say that rear-wheel drive failure is a common malfunction that can be prevented or delayed. Most often, the DEM pump fails due to clogged filters and oil system channels. It is possible to identify a failed part in case of a rear axle malfunction only after carrying out computer diagnostics (malfunctions of electronic systems can be found in the self-diagnostics section). The DEM pump is far from the only cause encountered. In some cases, the clutch itself, the control module, sensors, SAS sensor, wiring, etc. break down.
There are several solutions for changing the oil and filters in the Haldex coupling:
- The so-called "partial" oil change means changing the filter, flushing the pump mesh, sucking out the remaining oil with a syringe and filling with a new one.
- "Complete" replacement - removal of the coupling itself, complete disassembly with flushing of all channels and replacement of the filter. This procedure is necessary when the oil thickens strongly (loses its properties) and it is not possible to remove all the used oil without complete disassembly (visually similar to black grease).
We consider the most optimal solution to service the Haldex coupling every 60 thousand km, maximum 90 thousand km.
In case of failure of the DEM pump or lack of maintenance for more than 100 thousand km, it is necessary to change the oil with a complete disassembly of the coupling.
