DIY emery repair

In detail: do-it-yourself emery repair from a real master for the site my.housecope.com.

Almost every home craftsman has homemade emery from an electric motor among the tools. With its help, you can sharpen various things you need in everyday life. You can, of course, get such an emery in the store. However, the cost is often very high. Therefore, craftsmen make homemade emery.

To make emery, you will need an asynchronous motor from a Soviet washing machine.

For such a device, it is very important to choose the right electric motor. Special nozzles are mounted on its shaft, which clamp the emery wheel.

In Soviet times, many models of washing machines were produced. They were equipped with powerful reverse engines. In addition, such a washing machine had a switch equipped with a starter.

The most difficult thing when assembling a homemade emery, when such an electric motor is installed, is the process of attaching an abrasive stone to the axis. The shaft of the electric motor in most cases has no thread, the diameter of the hole in the stone often does not correspond to the diameter of the shaft.

To solve this problem, you need to grind a special part. It must compensate for this disproportion. To make homemade emery, you need to plan the future dimensions of such a part. Most often, homemade emery is made using an asynchronous electric motor.

For the emery to have high performance, the engine must develop 3000 rpm. If this number is much higher, then the grindstone may rupture. Therefore, in order to prevent the possibility of such a breakdown, an electric motor is used for the house, which develops 1500 revolutions. For an electric motor with 3000 rpm, a high strength stone must be used. It must be fastened with a very high quality and reliable flange. Most often, high revolutions are needed for polishing products. Sharpening is very rare on such devices.

When making homemade emery, you don't need to install a powerful electric motor. Professionals recommend using 400 W motor power for a stationary grinder. To work in a garage, an electric motor power of no more than 200 watts is sufficient. This is exactly what the washing machine was equipped with. One of its positive qualities is low speed.

Before making emery, it is necessary to clearly imagine the future direction of its operation. Usually, homemade emery has the ability to change the direction of rotation of the rotor. The Soviet washing machine was equipped with an asynchronous motor. This made it possible to change the rotation of the axis when connecting certain windings. Sometimes the motor has four leads specifically for changing the rotor rotation.

To find out the desired direction of rotation, the tester determines:

  • working winding;
  • starting winding.

The resistance indicator of the working winding in most cases does not exceed 12 ohms, in the starting winding it reaches 30 ohms. The working winding is connected to the mains. One end of the starting winding is connected to the output of the coil, with the other end it is necessary to touch the second terminal of the winding, and by touching it, immediately discard it. Usually, a special relay is used for this operation.

This determines the direction of rotation of the emery. If the winding leads are reversed, the motor will rotate in the opposite direction. Sometimes the starting coil is not installed. To get started, you just need to turn the whetstone, the sharpener will start working.

In order to be able to fix the stone on the engine axis, a special flange must be machined.

This work is performed on a lathe. A drawing is prepared in advance, where it must be indicated:

  • diameter of the abrasive, its inner hole;
  • diameter of the axis of the electric motor.

In addition, the flange for the motor shaft is turned directly on the machine. It is put on the axle, securely bolted, and a nut with a left-hand thread is installed.

Cutting the thread of the nut, flange thread directly depends on which direction the rotation of the electric motor shaft will be directed to. For clockwise rotation, a left-hand thread is cut, for the opposite rotation, a right-hand thread.

When the tabletop emery is turned on, spontaneous tightening of the nut will begin to occur. This nuance must be taken into account. If the nut starts to loosen, the abrasive stone may simply fly off during operation. This is very dangerous because possible serious injury.

After all work and assembly of the electric motor with a flange and a grinding stone, it must be installed on the carpentry table. To do this, take the bracket from the washing machine, after which it is bolted to the table with bolts. The motor is supported by the angle of the bracket. It keeps the engine horizontal. The bracket has a cutout that matches the shape of the motor.

To reduce vibration, the corner is wrapped in rubber. You can simply put a rubber hose on it.

To prevent flying particles of the abrasive wheel from causing injury to the worker, homemade emery must have a protective cover. It is made from thick sheet metal. Usually 2-3 mm is taken. The casing can be in the form of a half-ring rolled up from a steel strip.
