Home »How to disassemble a laptop Lenovo G500 and G510 to clean the dust?
Somehow they brought me such a laptop and asked to carry out preventive maintenance and cleaning of the cooling system. The customer complained about the laptop overheating. At first I thought, they say, this is a Lenovo laptop, on some laptops of this company, in order to get to the cooling system, you literally have to disassemble the entire laptop. To scatter it into small components. And over time, and so an ambush. Sea orders. But it turns out that I was deeply mistaken. Apparently, this laptop model is a pleasant exception. To get to the cooling system, you will have to disassemble the laptop only partially, mainly from the bottom of it. Well, this is all the lyrics, let's proceed to the disassembly and cleaning of the laptop itself.
This epic begins as usual. Turn off the power to the laptop. We take out the battery from the case, pushing back certain latches. The clips are shown in the photo, so you can't go wrong.
There is a cover on the bottom of the laptop, it is almost the size of the entire free area of the bottom of the laptop. To remove the cover, unscrew the two screws shown in the photo. The screws are located in the compartment where the battery was not so long ago.
Having unscrewed the necessary screws, we move, and then remove the cover. Look at the picture below.
Under the lid, we will see the ramps, hard drive and several other important elements of the laptop. It was decided not to touch the operative memory. The Winchester, in principle, should also not prevent us from getting to the laptop cooling system in order to clean it of dust and replace the thermal paste on it. But at first, I did not know this, and the hard disk was still removed. And I will also tell you how it is done, if it will be useful to someone in the future. Unscrew the two screws and pull the hard drive in the direction indicated by the red arrow in the picture. This will disconnect the hard drive from the connector. Then, lift up one end of the hard drive and slide it out of the laptop.

It also gets rid of the optical drive. Just in case, so to speak. We unscrew the screw that secures the drive. Then, push the drive out of the housing and remove it completely.
Removing the cooling fan... To do this, unscrew a couple of screws and disconnect the wiring that supplies power to the cooling fan. Occasionally this wiring may be stuck with adhesive tape, so pay attention to this.
Moving on to removing the cooling system from the laptop motherboard. Unscrew the screws that are marked in the bottom picture. Remove the cooling radiator. You can start cleaning the cooling radiator and removing the old layer of thermal paste from the contact pads. Before installation, we will apply new thermal grease.
In order to clean the cooling fan from dust, it was decided to disassemble it into smaller fragments. Thus, the fan can be cleaned more thoroughly and will be much more convenient.
I will not tell you how to clean this or that part of the laptop. There is nothing complicated here, especially since everyone is used to doing it in their own way, using certain tools and devices.
After cleaning all the elements of interest to us, we proceed to assembling the laptop. Since the disassembly process did not take much time and, in general, was not difficult, you can put the laptop back together without any particular difficulties.
How to disassemble a laptop Lenovo G510, G500 and clean it yourself from dust / disassembly. How to replace HDD, RAM)
Today they brought me a Lenovo G510 laptop for repair. This "poor fellow" fell from the table to the floor, and he was covered with something sticky, perhaps beer or kvass. Now I will tell you how to disassemble it.
We turn the laptop upside down, so that the battery is closer to us. We then extract this power supply.
Next, you need to unscrew the cover that covers the bottom of the laptop. In this line of mobile PCs, the manufacturer refused to use a large number of screws to fix the back cover of the device. The four protuberances found in the four corners of this laptop function as legs; there are no fasteners underneath.
The back cover is held in place by just two screws, which are located on the longest wall of the battery compartment. You need to unscrew these two screws. I first removed the seals that covered the screw heads, and later I will tell you why I did it.
After the screws are unscrewed, you need to slide the laptop cover away from you, and it can be easily removed.
On its inner surface, you can easily see traces of the liquid with which this mobile computer was poured. Then we rotate the laptop so that the battery compartment faces forward.
As you can see, this laptop no longer has a hard drive - I removed it earlier, as the owners urgently needed it, because this hard drive contains information that is of great importance for the owners of this device. Despite the lack of a hard disk, I will try to explain the very principle of dismantling it. To remove the hard drive, you need to unscrew the two screws securing it to the right and left. When the screws are unscrewed, you need to pull the hard drive towards you and remove it with a sliding motion.
Then remove the optical drive. It is secured with exactly the same screw as the hard drive.
Then you need to dismantle the keyboard, which is fastened with three screws. If you draw segments between the heads of these screws, then they form an isosceles triangle. The two vertices of this triangle (screw heads) are in the immediate vicinity of the battery bay, and another screw is located near the upper left corner of the hard drive bay. Note that the screws that secure the keyboard are different from the screws that hold the back cover and laptop hard drive, and should not be confused when reassembling.
Then we need to dismantle the cooling system. We unscrew the screws securing the fan, they are smaller in size than those that we have seen before.
We remove the fan, but something does not allow us to do this - the power cable is attached with adhesive tape, it is she who holds the cooler. We peel off this tape, and the fan is released.
Then you need to unscrew the radiator. We unscrew the three spring-loaded screws that hold the processor, and unscrew two more screws that are located on the left side of the cooling system.
We remove it, blow it through and clean it, also change the thermal paste.
In the next part of the article, you can learn how to dismantle a keyboard in a Lenovo G500 laptop, remove an optical disk, a motherboard, and reassemble the laptop.
Below is a video instruction for a complete disassembly of the Lenovo G510 laptop.
All laptops have roughly the same design and the disassembly process is not much different. However, each model from different manufacturers has its own nuances in the assembly, connection wires and fastening of components, so the dismantling process can cause difficulties for the owners of these devices. Next, we will take a closer look at the process of disassembling a laptop model G500 from Lenovo.
Do not be afraid that during disassembly you will damage the components or then the device will not work. If you do everything strictly according to the instructions, perform each action carefully and carefully, then there will be no malfunctions after reassembly.
Before disassembling the laptop, make sure that the warranty period has already expired, otherwise the warranty service will not be provided. If the device is still under warranty, it is better to use the services of a service center if the device malfunctions.
To disassemble, you only need a small screwdriver that fits the size of the screws used in the laptop. However, we recommend that you prepare colored labels or any other markings in advance to avoid getting tangled in different screw sizes. After all, if you screw the screw into the wrong place, then such actions can damage the motherboard or other components.
The entire disassembly process must be carried out only with the laptop disconnected from the network, therefore, it will be necessary to completely limit all power supply. This can be done as follows:
Turn off your laptop.
Unplug it, close it and turn it upside down.
Spread the fasteners and remove the battery.
Only after all these steps can you proceed to complete disassembly of the laptop.
You may already have noticed the missing visible screws on the back of the Lenovo G500, as they are hidden in less obvious places. Follow these steps to remove the back cover:
Removing the battery is necessary not only to completely cut off the power supply to the device, but also the fastening screws are hidden under it. After removing the battery, stand the laptop upright and remove the two screws near the connector. They have a unique size, which is why they are marked with a marking "M2.5 × 6".
The other four screws that secure the back cover are located under the feet, so you will need to remove them to gain access to the fastening elements. If you disassemble it often enough, then in the future, the legs may not reliably hold in place and fall off. Unscrew the remaining screws and mark them with a separate label.
You now have access to some of the accessories, but there is another access panel that will need to be removed if the top panel needs to be removed. To do this, find five identical screws around the edges and unscrew them one by one. Be sure to also tag them with a separate label so you don't get confused later.
The processor is hidden under the cooling system, so to clean the laptop or completely disassemble it, the fan with a heatsink will need to be disconnected. This can be done as follows:
Pull the fan power cable out of the connector and remove the two main screws securing the fan.
Now you need to remove the entire cooling system, including the radiator. To do this, loosen the four fastening screws one by one, following the numbering indicated on the body, and then unscrew them in the same order.
The radiator is attached to an adhesive tape, so it must be disconnected when removing. Just put in a little effort and it will fall off by itself.
After performing these manipulations, you get access to the entire cooling system and the processor. If you just need to clean the laptop from dust and replace the thermal paste, then you can skip further disassembly. Follow the required steps and collect everything back. For more information on cleaning your laptop from dust and replacing the thermal paste of the processor, read our articles on the links below.
The easiest and fastest action is to disconnect the hard drive and RAM. To remove the HDD, simply unscrew the two mounting screws and carefully remove it from the connector.
The RAM is not secured in any way, but simply plugged into the connector, so simply disconnect according to the directions on the case. Namely, you only need to lift the lid and get the bar.
On the back of the laptop there are a few more screws and cables that also hold the keyboard. Therefore, carefully look at the case and make sure that all fasteners have been unscrewed. Remember to label the different screw sizes and remember their locations. After completing all the manipulations, turn the laptop over and follow these steps:
Take a suitable flat object and pry up the keyboard from one side. It is made in the form of a solid plate and is held with latches.Do not use too much force, but rather walk with a flat object around the entire perimeter in order to detach the fasteners. If the keyboard does not respond, check again that all the screws on the back have been removed.
Do not jerk the keyboard, as it is held on to the loop. It must be disconnected by lifting the cover.
The keyboard is removed, and under it there are several cables of the sound card, matrix and other components. To remove the front panel, all of these cables will need to be disconnected. This is done in a standard way. After that, the front panel will simply detach, if necessary, take a flat screwdriver and pry the fasteners.
This completes the disassembly process for the Lenovo G500 laptop, you got access to all the components, removed the back and front panels. Then you can perform all the necessary manipulations, cleaning and repair work. Assembly is carried out upside-down.
