DIY ceiling repair with pvc panels

In detail: do-it-yourself ceiling repair with pvc panels from a real master for the site my.housecope.com.

Until relatively recently, we had no idea what could be done to the ceiling other than whitewashing. Well, paint with water emulsion. If you want something "funny" - wallpaper can be pasted over. With the entry into our life of new, interesting building materials, the number of good and different ways of finishing the ceiling has also increased. The arsenal of design solutions includes stretch ceilings, suspended, mineral, glass, mirrored, stained glass, plasterboard, sheathed with wooden panels ...

The ceiling cladding with PVC panels is advantageous with a decent price-quality ratio. At a relatively low cost, the ceiling looks unusual and "renovated".

In pursuit of originality, one should not overlap with kitsch. It is better to choose PVC panels in calm, neutral pastel colors. And the eye does not irritate, and the volume of the room visually increases. That with usually low ceilings in an apartment of a multi-storey building is not at all superfluous.

An important advantage of this type of decoration is that, with the seeming complexity of the work, an inexperienced amateur builder is quite capable of coping with the installation of a plastic ceiling with his own hands. So you can save on the invitation of professional finishers.

Building material stores offer a very wide selection of PVC panels. Different lengths and widths, they are lacquered, glossy, matte, wood or marble. It's up to your taste; the main thing is not to be confused with the wall.

The modern market offers many varieties of ceiling panels. It remains only to dig out exactly what is right for your interior.

The difference is in weight. Plastic wall panels are heavier and stiffer. Ceiling is much lighter, making it easier to work with. Fragility necessitates careful handling: a dent can be left even with your hand, not with a tool.

The finishing material is strong, durable, plastic, has good sound insulation, moisture resistant, does not fade in the sun, and is easy to clean. Oddly enough, thanks to special additives, it is environmentally friendly, resistant to high temperatures, does not burn and does not emit unpleasant odors. Therefore, you can replace the usual electrical wiring with circuits that allow you to install LEDs, halogen, spotlights.

Finishing the ceiling with plastic panels makes it possible to ignore the unevenness of the ceiling surface. If pipes or wiring are visible, the panels will reliably mask them. True, they will eat up to one and a half centimeters of the height of the room.

Thickness plastic panels are usually 5-10 millimeters, width - from 25 cm (standard) to 50 cm.

Length - from 2.7 meters (standard) to 3 meters. The components are 3 meters long.

To calculate the required number of panels, you need to divide the ceiling area (the sides are measured and multiplied by each other) by the area of one panel indicated on the package. Let's add 15 percent to the cuts with which we will deliver the missing; round up to the nearest integer.

  • We calculate the number of metal profiles for installation. This is more complicated. We draw a proportionally reduced ceiling diagram on paper. Draw parallel lines along one wall. We take into account that the profiles should be 60 centimeters apart from each other. We estimate how much it will take for the whole room.
  • You will need even more rigid profiles that will go around the perimeter.
  • The number of screws that will fix the panels, and dowels that will fix the profiles, is calculated taking into account the number of both, plus a margin.

If desired, you can replace the profiles with a wooden bar, and the screws with staples. This will reduce the cost of the process and simplify the process of assembling plastic panels. But for decades they will not stand like new in this case.

  • And finally, the skirting board. We divide the perimeter of the ceiling by three (the length of the segment is three meters) - this is the required number of plinths.

From tools and other materials, you need a perforator or drill, a screwdriver, a hacksaw, a knife, metal scissors, a miter box, liquid nails, and a rag.

Step one. With the level, we outline the attachment points for rigid profiles, which should go along the perimeter. They must be installed exactly horizontally. We fasten the profile tightly to the wall - so as not to leave gaps and crevices.

Step two. Using self-tapping screws, we install transverse profiles - the same ones that will hold the ceiling panels.

Step three. We mount a profile similar to the English "L" on the profiles along the perimeter.

The lathing of the ceiling for PVC panels can be made from both metal profiles and wood. But this option may not work for a bathroom or other damp rooms..

If your option for repairing the ceiling involves the installation of special lighting or masking communications, it's time to do it, until you started directly installing PVC panels.

Step four. Carefully use a hacksaw or metal scissors to cut the panels along the length of the ceiling. Laying the first panel should not become a lump of pancake. We fix it as close as possible to the corner to the transverse profiles with self-tapping screws. The next ones are mounted in the grooves that are located on the previous panel; we attach to the frame.

Step five, the most difficult and requiring special care is the installation of the last panel. It usually needs to be cut to the width, and then carefully inserted into the plank against the opposite wall.

Step six... Apply liquid nails to the ceiling plinth. Press it tightly against the ceiling for a few seconds. Remove excess glue with a rag.

Since PVC panels are surprisingly moisture resistant, it makes sense to install them in the bathroom. Even if you are thoroughly flooded with neighbors from above, the plastic panels will withstand the blow and you will not have to make major repairs. Especially if you also install PVC panels on the walls.

For the same reason, this finishing material is great for cladding a home kitchen. In the kitchen, plastic panels are especially good because stoves, especially gas stoves, thoroughly pollute the ceiling with soot. And PVC panels, even white ones, can be easily washed with ordinary household chemicals, and the problem is solved in minutes.
