Do-it-yourself xerox phaser 3117 printer repair

In detail: do-it-yourself repair of the xerox phaser 3117 printer from a real wizard for the site my.housecope.com.

Ending. Beginning in # 3, 2013

Prevention of the laser unit

Release the four latches (1-2 in Fig. 30) and remove the block cover. The retainer (2) is released with a narrow flat-blade screwdriver through the rectangular hole located on the underside of the unit body. If necessary, clean the glass (1 in Fig. 31), the lens (2), the mirror of the beam sensor (3), the beam sensor (4), the laser lens (5), and the faces of the hexagonal prism (6) from contamination. If it is impossible to clean the lens properly, unscrew the self-tapping screw (7 in Fig. 31), remove the lens holder (10), release the clips (8 and 9), remove the lens, clean and reinstall in the reverse order of removal.

With an increased noise of the laser unit, the prism drive motor is prevented.

Prism Drive Motor Prevention

Unscrew three self-tapping screws (11 in Fig. 31) fastening the control board assembly with the motor to the block case. The hole in the board (12) is located on the locating projection and is fixed with varnish. Carefully remove the board from the ledge and take it out of the block case. Move the latch (1 in Fig. 32) of the rotor away from the engine and, by moving it up, remove it from the control board. Move the motor rotor (2) assembled with a hexagonal prism (3) upward and remove it from the motor. When removing, avoid touching the side faces of the prism with your fingers or the tool. Clean the rotor axis (1 in Fig. 33) and the inner surface of the stator sleeve (2) from dirt. Apply a thin layer of liquid lubricant to the rotor shaft. Reinstall the rotor and rotor retainer in sequence. The board assembled with the prism drive motor is installed in the laser unit body and three self-tapping screws are screwed to fasten it to the body.

Video (click to play).

Unscrew the two self-tapping screws (13 in Fig. 31) fastening the LED holder to the block body, move it up and remove the assembly with the laser board from the block. Installation is carried out in reverse order.

A little less than a year ago, our institution purchased a batch of Xerox 3117 printers, and we faced a paper feed problem. The first failure occurred a month after the start of operation; the refusal was "floating", and there was no point in contacting the guarantee. The printer was disassembled, examined for defects, but nothing suspicious was found. Since the stock was still there, the dismantling with it was left for later.
A few months later, the second and then the third arrived with the same defect, this time Samsung ML-2010, which needed to be repaired quickly.

It was not possible to find a solution on the Internet, the search gave only one result: judging by the requests, many faced such a problem. Various versions have been proposed, up to incredible ones, such as a laser malfunction; none of these versions has been confirmed. I had to delve into it myself, and get to the bottom of the truth.

The printer was completely disassembled, but, like the first time, I saw nothing new there. Having thoroughly studied the design, I began a series of experiments. Over the course of two days, many versions were tested. Rubber bands were torn off, new ones were glued, material of various thicknesses was placed under the roller, gears were lubricated, springs were compressed and stretched, etc. etc. This is not counting the fact that before that all sensors and all contacts were checked.
Most frustrating was that each design change required a complete disassembly and reassembly of the printer to validate; I took it apart forty times, and I can already do it with my eyes closed. Time passed, there was no result, the printer had to be returned.A new Xerox 3117 was brought from the warehouse, from which I borrowed a paper transport unit and installed it in Samsung ML-2010; operability was restored, the “guilty” node was found.

By the way, Xerox 3117 and Samsung ML2010 (and the like) are structurally the same product, and, most likely, are made at the same Chinese plant, only with different labels and firmware. Our Xerox-3117 (on printed circuit boards and on the sticker on the microcircuit) was written ML-1610.

I still have a new Xerox-3117 in my hands with an unknown malfunction of a known node. A series of experiments followed, right up to the alignment of the shaft, which, as it seemed to me, was tightened with a screw - all to no avail. Then I changed tactics, brought another new printer, removed the working node from it and installed it next to the faulty one for comparison.

Everyone in the department was asked to find at least one difference. The first person to find was offered a bonus from the authorities and a beer from me. But the attempts were unsuccessful. The two units were exactly the same, and it was not possible to find the difference between them in order to understand the cause of the malfunction. And so, when all thoughts were over, a man from the next department offered to seal the entire brake pad with tape. Honestly, this procedure raised great doubts, since the video was already sliding on the paper, and then there was slippery tape. but, since no one put forward other hypotheses, we had to check this one. And a miracle happened - the leaf left the tray; it was not a victory yet, but a step in the right direction: scotch tape is good as a temporary solution, but we needed a permanent one. It was necessary to find out which of the edges of the brake pad creates an obstacle to the passage of the paper.

Image - DIY xerox phaser 3117 printer repair

After a short discussion, it was decided that the protrusion behind the rubber band was the culprit for all the troubles. The protrusion was cut off, sanded with zero, and the brake pad was installed in place. In euphoria, the screws were twisting with all their hearts, and the trains would fit for centuries. At the last moment, when I was already tightening the body parts, something stopped me. Light. Camera. Motor. Stop the motor. The sheet remains in the tray. Is this really the end ?!

Disassembly again and an attempt to come up with something, but there were no more thoughts. Then I took the brake pad in one hand, and a sheet of paper in the other, and tried to simulate its passage. It was noticed that when pressing with the edge of the sheet perpendicular to the plane of the platform and sliding along the surface, the sheet begins to rest against small irregularities. It became obvious that the protrusion was not sufficiently cut and polished poorly. This time I tried with all my heart, but before putting everything in place, I decided to conduct a test using a sheet.
After my work, there was a small dent with polished edges. It is clearly visible in the photo on the right.
We are talking about hundredths of a millimeter. During testing, it seemed that the sheet rests against a sharply honed step. Another resurfacing. Test using a sheet. Assembly. VICTORY!
After that, the functionality of the rest of the printers was restored.

If you didn't manage to post it here, then post the pictures at least on

and here are links.

What means
“When it prints, the pick-up roller stops and does not feed the sheet to the fuser.”?
Does it just stop, or is it scrolling, but the sheet does not capture?

I spread it. On request, I can lay out more. There is a photo of almost the entire disassembly of the printer

The roller stops and as if it does not have enough torque and it stops

You at least answer the questions.
Answer the previous questions and answer the following.
Did the feed roller even spin when sending a print job?
What kind of indication was there on the device?
Describe the behavior of the apparatus in more detail.

In your situation (when you cannot answer the questions (because the printer is disassembled), I always scrolled the gum on the gripper roller 180 degrees before assembling the apparatus (you must, of course, remove the gum itself with the plastic inside from the main body of the gripper roller).

A few months ago I wrote an article about cleaning or replacing the feed roller on a Samsung ML-1610/2010.After that, analyzing the search queries of visitors, I often come across the question of replacing the brake pad with these devices. Well, today we will change the brake pad using the example of the Xerox Phaser 3117 printer. This device is similar in structure to the Samsung ML-1610/1615/2010/2015 printers.

Half of the printer must be disassembled to remove the brake pad. Let's get started.

First, open the tray cover and remove it from the grooves, then lower the front cover, which also snaps into place.

Now we can take out the cartridge, just pull it by the handle towards you. Immediately unscrew the two bolts on the front of the body.

We leave for the back of the printer. Here, on the rear ledge, unscrew the bolt on the left and right.

Next, slightly press down on the plastic to release the latches, and the back wall will begin to come off.

Behind this wall, we will see the high voltage board and formatter board, which are held together by a metal plate. We need to remove this plate, but first we will raise the common body, having previously unscrewed two bolts.

Lift the case neatly and evenly from all sides.

We disconnect all contacts from the microcircuits and unscrew one grounding wire.

We unscrew four bolts at the edges and one in the middle.

In addition to the bolts, the plate is held by two latches from above, we bend them, and while moving the plate, lower the sensor foot so as not to break it.

When you have detached the plate from the printer, separate the wires from the plate. We put the plate with the boards aside.

Next, we need to remove the paper feed unit. Bend the contact plates on the left, unscrew the three bolts on the right.

Another bolt is hidden in the lower right corner. We pull the block towards ourselves.

Here we snap off the pickup roller. The brake pad, as it should be, is under the pick-up roller; to get it, you need to additionally remove the pick-up roller axle.

We tighten two gears on the side, and then move the tray clamping foot from the right side to the center.

Now we can move the axis to the right and pull it out.

The brake pad lifts up easily. Now you can clean it, replace it with a new one, or change the sealing gum.

Next, clean all the parts, after which you can put everything back. I will not clean the parts, as this printer is decommissioned (albeit a working one).

We insert the axle into place, put the gears on the left side, and snap the pick-up roller.

Now we need to install the paper pick-up and feed unit in place. To do this, while pressing the block to the printer, you need to press the paper tray, otherwise the block will not snap into place.

Next, tighten the four bolts on the right, and slide the contact plates into place on the left side.

Lay the wire along the edges in the guides and lead it into the metal plate with the boards.

We raise the plate and sit on two latches. Don't forget the sensor tab in the middle, it should snap into place. We immediately tighten five bolts, after which we connect all the contacts and tighten one ground contact.

Now we can put on the general body. Pay attention to the paper exit rollers, when installing the case, you can move them, and then during printing you will have a paper jam at the exit from the fuser. If the rollers are bent, just correct them, the photo shows an example of the normal position of the rollers.

We twist the common body by two bolts at the back, put the rear wall in place and fasten with bolts on both sides.

At the front, add two more bolts to the case, insert the front cover into the grooves, replace the cartridge and close the cover.

We put on the lid of the tray, put a stack of paper and print for our pleasure.

That's all for today! Until new topics!

Good day!
Thanks a lot for the manual, very helpful.
The Xerox 3122 printer did everything according to the instructions, changed the roller and the brake pad, after collecting the paper stretches as it should, but now a new attack - everything is printed in horizontal waves of the same width from a normally printed sheet to a white sheet. What could it be? Everything was fine before analysis.
I changed the cartridges, the situation does not change.

Perhaps after assembling the printer, there is a bad contact somewhere.Remove the back cover and carefully check all the contacts of the board, corona and connecting.

Thank you so much for such an excellent instruction! Following it, I replaced the brake pad in my Phaser 3117 absolutely without any problems. True, this did not help - the printer still feeds several sheets of paper at once Despite the outwardly good condition of the feed roller, I came to the conclusion that it was necessary to replace the entire pair of feeds. that is, not only the brake pad, but also the feed roller. Today akazal video on Aliexpress, should be delivered in 2-3 weeks. As soon as I replace the video, I will unsubscribe about the result. Once again I bow to you for such a detailed, visual and clear instruction - I know what a lot of work is behind the creation of such documents.

After replacing the brake track and roller, the printer constantly twists something inside when it is turned on. Previously, it lasted 10 seconds, now it does not stop. In this case, you can print something, but all sheets from the stack are captured at once. What could have gone wrong when rebuilding?

print quality.

Note: when cleaning the inside of the printer, do not touch
to the transfer roller located under the cartridge.
Fingerprints can result in poor print quality.

Warning: the use of surfactants,
containing a large amount of alcohol, solvents and other
strong agents may cause discoloration or
the appearance of cracks on the body of the device.

Cleaning the outside of the printer

Wipe the outside of the printer with a soft, clean cloth without
pile. You can slightly dampen the cloth in water, while avoiding
moisture drops on or inside the printer.

Cleaning the inside of the device

Scraps may accumulate inside the printer during printing
paper, toner particles and dust. Over time, this can lead to
poor print quality, such as toner smudges or
lubricating it. Cleaning the inside of the printer will help
get rid of such problems or reduce their impact on
print quality.

Cleaning the inside of the printer

Turn off the printer, unplug the power cord, and let the printer

Good time friends. I decided to add a little fresh news.
Repaired XEROX Phaser 3117 printer today.
And the problem was as follows. When printing or "requesting" a test page, the drum spins until an error flies out, i.e. the page was captured, the drum spun again, grabbed the next page and so on until it “jammed” a few sheets and stopped.
A similar situation occurred with the test page, only the truth is if there is only one sheet in the tray, he tried to grab the sheet, but since it was not there, he just spun and after 10 such turns he stopped with an error.

The decision came from the Internet, or rather from one of the forums, it turned out that there is an electromagnet in the printer that stops the scrolling of the shaft and it turned out to be so dirty and dirty that the electromagnet did not have enough power to release the locking plate.

After removing the case and disassembling one of the sides where the gears are located, I cleaned the magnet and the plate from the deposited toner for more than 6 years, which led to this problem.

In general, if anyone has such a situation, most likely the electromagnet is dirty! We disassemble the printer and clean the electromagnet and everything will be all right 🙂

I would be grateful if someone could tell you how to cure such a problem.

The printer began to pick up the sheet twice.

For greater clarity, I attach a gif with a problem.

Thanks for the tip. I will disassemble, clean and try.

Here the fact is that double triggering is obtained even without the participation of the sheet, which can be seen on the animated GIF.

So, then tell us what happens when the device is turned on, whether it scrolls with the feed roller during initialization (the device should not do this).

If everything is normal and the roller scrolls the current when the document is printed (when there is no paper in the tray), then the flag of the sensor for detecting the presence of paper in the tray is definitely clamped!
And yet, if there is no paper in the tray, does the device show it with indicators or not?

In general, look at the sensor for the presence of paper in the tray (if it does not spin the roller during initialization, i.e., as expected, the device is ready when it is turned on), but scrolls a couple of times without paper, in this case, this is normal, because thinks that the ubmaga is in the tray, but simply could not take it on the first scroll, but without taking it and after the second scroll, the device should give an error jam0.

The printer hums when turned on. You can hear that something is spinning in the heavenly cartridge. But the paper feed roller itself is in place.

I think that everything is in order with the flag. When there is no paper in the tray, it lights up red. When there is something green.

As they say, it is better to see once than hear a hundred times. I shot a video of the process of the paper grab roller.

Image - DIY xerox phaser 3117 printer repairImage - DIY xerox phaser 3117 printer repairHello gentlemen, repairmen and amateurs!

I apologize in advance for, perhaps, amateurish questions and ignorance of terminology, but there is nowhere to go.

So, there is the antediluvian Xerox Phaser 3117 (as far as I understand, this is almost a complete analogue of Samsung ML-2015), but the printer is practically “new” and at the time of the Incident had a run of only

1400 pages. I turned it on yesterday after being idle for a year and a half, and it immediately began to delight me by capturing several sheets in a row: you send a two-page document to print, instead of the second sheet you get a whole stack. On this occasion, I did the least invasive things: I wiped the tray, rubbed the brake pad (and the gum) with cologne, removed and washed the gum of the paper pick-up roller. I sent an article of 20 sheets for printing: I printed 10 (the last sheet jammed at the end of the stove at the end, I reprinted it) + 10 sheets on both sides. “Against the background of the“ debut ”this is already a result,” I thought, and today I decided to arrange a stress test for him by printing a book. The poor fellow went haywire. Probably, the paper did not differ in special quality, and as it warmed up (as far as I understood), the printer began to undermine me with stacks of sheets that got stuck at the exit from the oven, I pulled them out, printed on and. pre-printed! Image - DIY xerox phaser 3117 printer repair

Result: one of the rollers at the very exit ended up at the bottom and stalled (I managed to put it back in place after removing the casing of the apparatus), apparently, the stove also overheated as a result of the guide tubes shrinking on the pressure roller (I don’t know what to call them scientifically ). One of them stuck at all in the axis of the shaft, and since it shrank unevenly, it works like an eccentric - the stove cover trembles from blows from below, the sheets are crushed. Without a cover (clamped the limit switches) and with the flap folded back, the test sheet gets stuck in the center on this shaft and is crumpled into a pea. She comes out into the light of day with a covered bar, but she jumps mockingly. It is they, these tubes, that give such a result, or is there something I don't understand?

Questions:
1. What to do with these plastic tubes on the shaft? Where to get them (or what to replace), how to put them on? Suspect you will have to remove the shaft?
2. As far as I understand, the printer can issue sheets in batches and choke on them due to the banal old age of the rubber damper on the electromagnet, which is responsible for feeding from the tray - does the foot just stick to the sticky elastic band? What to replace it with or what to do with the old one?
3. Could this pressure shaft bend during torture? Is it possible to buy it somewhere?
4. During the "last day of Pompeii" one of the sheets crumpled in the stove, apparently, somewhere there was toner (and not only there) - is it worth disassembling the entire printer, washing all the shafts, etc., or is this an excessive measure ? Is there somewhere a video or article with visual illustrations about the disassembly of this printer or analogs?
5. I think it would be nice to lubricate the drive gears at the same time. What kind of lubricant should I use? Should I smear everything I see, or should some of them be dry to prevent toner from settling?
6. What other weak points should you look out for?

Printers, copiers, MFPs, faxes and other office equipment:
issues of repair, maintenance, refueling, selection

Xerox Phaser 3117 is it possible to remove the pickup roller without disassembling the printer, found the latches on the roller, but something does not come off, the roller may need to be stronger or where should it be pulled down or towards you?

and what else can you clean the roller if it pulls the paper poorly? there is no special liquid (

The roller (upper part) towards itself, protruding both latches to the sides.
Turn the rubber band of the roller with a fresh part into the working area, wipe for lack of anything better with a damp cloth.

In general, remove the cover, and the laser, so that there was access, five minutes of time. You will see how to shoot the video and the axis will remain intact ..)

you probably made a mistake with the model, since there the latches are pressed down and not to the sides

Lisicin (3): you probably made a mistake with the model No, I was not mistaken .. Still, I strongly recommend removing the plastic and the laser. There you will see everything for yourself.

Lisicin (3): since there the latches are pressed downward and not to the sides
They are pressed, then they are pressed, but only the video is not released. ))) So it's better to push them apart.

I did everything as you described, I turned the gum, now when the printer is turned on, the red button is on and that's it, nothing is heating up, nothing scrolls, at the beginning, when the power is turned on, the top green bottom is yellow for 1 second then the top is red, what should I do ??

more precisely, on the contrary, upper yellow lower green

Perhaps during surgery hostage release killed damaged sensor (or registration, or closing the cover). Connect the device to a computer, install firewood - you will find out what it is complaining about.

everything re-ruled all the sensors, everything works, but the inverted side pulls even worse than the old one

Can I rub it with sandpaper?

Lisicin (9): upside down
Turned the elastic over (removed and put in the opposite direction) or turned it over (scrolled without removing)?

the wrong side is completely "BALD".
put it as it was and so that a better "protector" was in the working area.

(12) :-))) Turn it back out. You just had to turn it up.

Lisicin (12): flipped the wonders of needlework inside out. It is enough to turn the rubber band on the roller half a turn. Now it is also advisable to set the elastic in the correct direction of rotation on the roller.

Thank you all for the prompt advice, I corrected everything), but I got some experience)

For such a device, in terms of service life, it is not a sin to replace the gum. The whole issue price is $ 1.

“This is a state service, baby :)” - well wait, they will call again soon. And then it will no longer be limited to a simple turn.

Nemetz (18): The whole issue price is $ 1 Yes, only the price is from 10 pieces, plus the delivery is the same.

I shoot like this: I send a test sheet, as the clutch just starts to work, I cut off the power, the roller turns a little, and it is quite convenient to remove it, and then attach it back to the axle.

General scheme of disassembling, cleaning and refilling the cartridge Xerox 106R01159 analogue Samsung MLT-D108S is the same for all printers listed, except that some cartridges have a fuse and a chip, and some do not.

1) Place the cartridge with the handle away from you. Remove the two screws on the right side cover (Fig. 1).

2) Gently pry off the right side cover (see Fig. 2).

3) There are two screws on the top front of the cartridge. Remove them (Fig. 3).

4) Lift and remove the waste toner box. Make sure the tooth on the right is removed from the socket. If you try to lift the lid without removing the tooth from its socket, it will break off (Fig. 4).

5) Remove the two screws and a cleaning blade from the waste toner box (Fig. 5 and 6).

6) Remove the remaining toner from the hopper.

7) Reinstall the cleaning blade and two screws. Set aside the waste toner box (Figure 7).

8) Remove the two screws on the right side cover. Gently pry off the cover (Fig. 8).

9) Remove the gear set and set aside (Fig. 9).

10) Pull out the primary charge shaft from the contact side, it must be lifted and removed (Fig. 10). Clean the primary charge roller with a primary charge roller cleaner.

11) Remove the photoreceptor drum (Fig. 11).

12) Gently pry off the plug of the toner filling hole. The plug sits firmly and is easily damaged (Fig. 12).

13) Remove any remaining toner in the hopper.

14) Gently slide the side shaft plate out of the cartridge by pushing the tab on the side of the cartridge. Also remove the spring that is in contact with the developer shaft axis (Figures 13 and 14).

15) Remove the developer roller by lifting it (Fig. 15).

16) Remove the two screws on the metering blade. The other end of the spring is on the side of the blade that is close to the toner fill port. When removing the blade, remove it so as not to damage it (Fig. 16 and 17). Clean the metering blade. Failure to do this may result in streaks on the print. Soak a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol and clean the blade. Try not to put pressure on the blade so as not to damage it. If toner adhesion is very strong, clean first with acetone and then with alcohol.

17) Clean the feed roller and remove any remaining toner from the hopper (Fig. 18).

18) Reinstall the metering blade and two screws. Make sure the end of the spring is in the correct position (Figures 19 and 20).

19) Put the drum back in place (Fig. 25).

20) Install the shaft plate. Guide the end of the spring so that it is on top of the plate and contacts the axis of the developer roller. Make sure the notch on the insert fits into the slot (Figures 22 and 23).

21) Lubricate and install the gear set as shown in the picture (Fig. 24).

22) Install the developer roller with the key side to the gear side (Fig. 21).

23) Clean the old conductive grease from the contact hub of the primary charge shaft and apply a new one. Install the shaft. A small amount is enough. In the case of lubrication, more is not better (Fig. 26).

24) Put the required toner into the hopper - about 85 grams, Xerox P8e will do, or better Static Control ML-4500. Replace the plug, check for leaks (Fig. 27).

25) Install the side cover to the gear side. Make sure the primary charge shaft is seated correctly and that all gears are seated correctly. Lubricate all gear seats before installing (Fig. 28).

26) Install the waste toner box (Fig. 29).

27) Install two screws on the cover (Fig. 30).

28) Install the remaining side cover and two screws. Make sure the cover fits properly. Lightly lubricate the shaft of the drum flange before installing. Lubricate the developer roller seat with conductive grease (Fig. 31).

29) Check for fuse on cartridges with fuse (Fig. 32).

30) Replace the chip (Fig. 33). Well, either remove it or glue the chip contacts if the printer is already flashed.

The main signs of a laser printer breakdown are:

  • error "no paper in the tray" if there is one,
  • the printer does not turn on,
  • does not pick up paper,
  • grabbing several sheets of paper,
  • the product prints white streaks,
  • the product prints black stripes,
  • fuzzy or smeared print,
  • frequent paper jams.
  • the appearance of extraneous sounds when printing.
  • the printer does not recognize the cartridge.

Common repair and replacement of units, as well as individual parts:

  • thermo-foil oven (fusing unit);
  • heating roller;
  • thermistor;
  • paper feed and gripper rollers;
  • power supply unit;
  • an image developing unit;
  • automatic feeder paper pick-up unit;

The most common faults:

  • Brake pad wear. Due to the abrasion of the rubber, several sheets are gripped at the same time. In this situation, the rubber or brake pad is replaced.
  • Worn paper feed and pick rollers. This is the most common problem with a printing device. When you try to pick up a sheet, it jams. When feeding a large number of sheets, the roller starts picking up the sheets every other time or stops picking up completely. Replacing the rollers individually or the entire pickup assembly will eliminate this problem.
  • Damage to the thermal film. A break in the thermal film, defects in the rubber shaft will certainly be reflected on the paper. It may jam from one corner, smudges and streaks appear, and the coloring matter (toner) will smudge. Most often, the rupture of the thermal film occurs due to the ingress of foreign office supplies onto it or the development of its resource.
  • Teflon shaft defects. There is no thermal film in these devices, but the thermal film wears out over time. Similar to thermal film tearing, this defect will inevitably affect the print quality.
