The device of such curtains is quite simple, a rectangular fabric is taken and weights are sewn into it at regular intervals, which provide uniform folds. On the reverse side, special rings are sewn through which the lifting cords pass, and a Velcro tape (in other words, Velcro) is sewn into the upper part, with which the canvas is attached to the cornice. A weighting agent is sewn into the lower part of the curtain, thanks to which the fabric rises evenly and forms correct folds.

As a rule, the curtain itself does not require repair, with the exception, perhaps, of plastic rings for cords, they come off or break over time. This is due to the fact that they are very hot in the sun, the plastic from which the rings are made becomes brittle and after a while begins to crack. For repairs, it is enough to rip off the old rings and sew new ones to the curtain.

The main problems requiring repair roman blinds, connected with the cornice on which it is installed. Eaves of this type are called lifting and are divided into two types - open and closed. It should be said right away that closed Roman cornices are more reliable and durable. They, in turn, are also manufactured in two versions: a regular curtain rod for light and medium curtains and a reinforced curtain rod for medium and heavy curtains. Open curtain rods are for medium and light curtains only.

The main problems of Roman blinds are the following:

Uneven raising and lowering of the curtain. The reason for such a breakdown is the failure of the lifting block, which will result in entanglement or even breakage of the lifting cord (cord). The repair consists either in bulkheading the eaves and eliminating the cause of tangled cords, or in replacing the lifting unit. Such a nuisance is typical for open cornices, the block itself has a latch design, which can open when the load increases or with a sharp jerk. This is not immediately noticeable and the curtain works as it should for some time, but as soon as the cord stops winding evenly, the skew of the canvas becomes immediately visible. In this situation, people begin to raise and lower the curtain even more in the hope that everything will unravel by itself, but everything turns out exactly the opposite - the cords become even more tangled. In closed eaves, this happens less often and in some cases it is enough to simply untangle the cord.

The fabric does not rise or fall, the control chain scrolls or, on the contrary, does not move. The control mechanism is clearly out of order and needs to be replaced. Likewise, this kind of malfunction is more common on a Roman blind with an open cornice, especially in the case of thick and heavy fabrics. The repair of the Roman cornice will consist in replacing the mechanism, we recommend that you immediately install a reinforced one, even if it will be more expensive, but it will last longer than usual.

The curtain rod control ball chain has broken. Usually, Roman blinds use either plastic or metal control chains.With metal, something rarely happens, but plastic over the years of regular use can break. As a rule, solid-soldered ring chains without a lock are used, in which case the cornice will require disassembly and installation of a new chain in the control mechanism. If a detachable chain with a lock was used, then all the actions are the same, but in addition the chain will need to be fixed in the lock. The simplest case is when the lock has opened, but the chain has not yet fully come out of the cornice, then it will be enough either to snap it into the old lock, or simply replace the chain lock with a new one.

For wide and heavy Roman blinds, we recommend using a single curtain rod with two reinforced controls on both sides. Such a cornice can also be called split if the shaft consists of two pieces, each of which is controlled separately.

From time to time we encounter the so-called lightweight fabric problem. When the curtain fabric is made of a very light, almost transparent tulle fabric, when the curtain is raised, folds may form in the wrong places where it was intended by the design. The tulle begins to gather in arbitrary places, and not from the bottom up. This effect is caused by the fabric "sticking" to the lifting cords due to its insufficient weight. A solution is to install an additional lower weighting agent.

It is very important to choose the right fabric. It should keep its shape and be tight. Therefore, you should use high quality fabrics that will not deteriorate after washing. As for the colors and patterns, it is better if they are sustained in the general color scheme of the room. But there are nuances here too: for example, the cage hides all the controversial aspects of sewing, but the strip gives them away.
How to calculate the amount of fabric? Depending on the width and height of the window, plus seam allowances, which are 2-5 cm on all sides. It is also important how the curtain is attached - on a cornice, a bar or in another way. By the way, now on sale you can find special curtain rods specifically for Roman blinds.

The search for material for a product is not all. In addition, you will need wooden or metal rods like twigs. They are needed to maintain the shape of the top and bottom edges of our curtain, as well as the lateral folds. Also, a strong cord and rings with a diameter of 1-1.5 cm are useful for the opening and closing mechanism, and a special weighting agent is used to fix the shape of the curtain.

Now you can start cutting with a light heart. Often, Roman shades are made on a lining, which is sewn immediately, tucking and hiding all the cuts. Then, from the inside out, folds are marked and covered with folds for inserting rods that set the rigidity of the product. The distance between the folds is usually at least 30 cm.

The rings are sewn on the basis of three pieces for each fold for the twig (both top and bottom curtains: right, left and middle. Japanese curtains, or, as they are also called, Japanese panels, can be made from both light transparent and dense fabrics. Soft pastel colors - beige, pale green combined with refined white - will be preferred. Monochrome fabrics of shades of the elements of the earth from Japanese mythology are also possible - brown, blue, green. For greater authenticity, you can use fabric with traditional Japanese images - cherry blossoms, Japanese-style flowers, willow branches. Images of hieroglyphs are appropriate - painted with a special paint for fabric, printed on a machine or sewn with a cord or braid.

What is the most important thing to know if you decide to make traditional Japanese curtains with your own hands? The first point is that Japanese panels are narrow canvases 60 cm wide. This width is a prerequisite, since a special cornice is used to hang them. Now on sale there are cornices for Japanese curtains of various types. Usually they are hung on three - five-string runners, which allow the canvases to be moved either separately from each other, or simultaneously. The so-called "Connector" helps to move the canvases all together, and at the bottom they are equipped with a metal weighting agent. The second point is that there are no assemblies along the upper edge of the curtains. And the third is the ultimate brevity of the product. Accessories and any grips are missing.

First, straight strips of fabric 60 cm wide are cut out. Allowances for processing and shrinkage are added, the side seams and the bottom are processed. At the bottom, the canvas is finished with a drawstring, the allowance on the sides is not overstretched. Then the curtains are ironed, the upper edge is made up. We calculate the length of the curtain when setting up as follows: add an allowance for a special Velcro tape 1, 0-2, 0 cm to the length of the finished curtain.

Sewing and assembling process of Roman blinds

What is used for sewing?

• dense fabric;
• lining material;
• wooden twigs;
• small plastic rings (2 rings for each drawstring);
• nylon cord.

What is used for assembly and hanging?

• a wooden strip, the length of which is equal to the length of the curtains;
• hooks with screw legs;
• fasteners, screws.

Please note that the width of curtains made in this style cannot be wider than 220 centimeters, otherwise the twigs in the folds will bend. Additional elements that are used to manufacture the product are prepared in advance. This is a round strong cord, Velcro, thin metal or wooden rods (twigs), a rail for fastening the curtain, rings with a diameter of one and a half centimeters and a clip to the cord.

First, the dimensions of the fabric are calculated according to the rules: they carefully measure the length and width of the existing window. 10 centimeters are added to the width of the future product, and 20 centimeters to the planned length. Then they start sewing. Velcro with loops along the entire length is sewn to the front side at the top of the canvas.

Along the entire length of the canvas, the places where the twigs will be placed are marked. They are inserted approximately every 20 centimeters of the length of the curtain. Leave 4 centimeters at the folds of the twigs. There is no margin for the hem below.

Then the fabric is folded right side inward. They are stitching along. Sew on three rings from the seamy side on each fold. Do so that three rows with rings are located along the length of the product parallel to each other.

The second part of the Velcro is nailed gently with small nails to the rail.

Instead of studs, a construction stapler is sometimes used. The product is applied to the mount. Thread the cord through the clip and rings. Then the rods are inserted into the folds.

Using the screws, fasten the holder for the curtain. A self-made Roman blind is hung on it.

To prevent the curtains from falling:

A triple cord is passed through a ring at the bottom of the curtains, which is sewn specifically for this purpose. The cord is fixed with clothing clips. Press down on the latch while lifting the curtain. They are released when they are brought to the desired height. The curtain is thus obtained securely in place.

For a secure fit, curtain hooks are sometimes used, onto which the remaining ends of the cord are wound.

Absolutely any fabric is suitable for sewing: both thin and denser. However, it is much easier to work with densely textured material.

It is not advised to purchase material with large ornaments for Roman blinds, since the deformed pattern on the assembled product will look ugly.

A fabric with stripes for such a curtain is perfect. In the open state, the folds formed on the curtains will not create any deformation.

So, knowing how to sew and assemble curtains, repairing them will not cause panic.

The structure of an adjustable mechanism in such a product does not break so often, because it is simple in itself.

Much more often, repairs are required by moving elements that make up the lowering-lifting system and on which the curtain cloth is attached - these are rods or cables. If only the cords are damaged, then replacing such a system is easy. What should be done? Buy in the store the element that needs to be replaced in advance and change it. Failed fixing elements - a lace or a chain can also be replaced with your own hands.

Please note that parts made from unreliable plastic break down more often and will require much more repair, so buy longer-term samples immediately if possible.

Sometimes more serious repairs are required when the breakdowns are of a different nature. If you are not absolutely sure that you will be able to fix them at home, then it is better to seek help from a specialist. The repairs will be made with high quality and much faster: your favorite kitchen curtains can be hung back to where they hung, in a very short time, as if they did not break at all.
