DIY gazelle 3302 steering gear repair

In detail: do-it-yourself gazelle 3302 steering gear repair from a real master for the site my.housecope.com.

The need for adjustment arises in the event of an increase in the free play of the steering wheel over 20 ° for buses and 25 ° for other vehicle modifications (see Checking the technical condition of the steering).
By turning the steering wheel 2.5 turns from the straight-ahead position in any direction, ...

… And swinging the steering gear screw by the fork fixed to it, we check the axial or radial clearance in the steering gear bearings. The backlash should not be felt.

It is also possible to adjust the clearance in the screw bearings on a car, but for the subsequent adjustment of the engagement of the nut - shaft-sector, it is more convenient to immediately remove the steering gear.
Remove the steering gear (see. Removing the steering gear). To avoid damage ...

... remove the plastic cover ...

... and a foam seal.

Using the "13" head, unscrew the four bolts securing the upper cover of the mechanism case.

Prying off with a screwdriver, remove the cover ...

... and remove one of the shims.

Install the cover, tighten the bolts and check the backlash.
If there is any backlash, remove one more gasket. Having achieved the absence of backlash, we adjust the gap in the engagement of the nut-shaft-sector pair. To do this, we install the bipod on the shaft and, slightly tightening its nut, turn the screw to move the bipod to the middle position, after which we swing the shaft-sector by the bipod. The stroke of the bipod end should not be felt (greater than 0.3 mm).
If it is larger, then pry it with an awl or a thin screwdriver, ...

remove the plastic cover ...

Using pliers, remove the spring rings from both sides of the mechanism case.

With a thin beard with a blunt end, we straighten the holes on the edge of the outer ring of the shaft-sector bearings.

With a special wrench, turn the eccentric outer rings of the bearings in the crankcase holes clockwise from the side of the spline end of the sector shaft.

ATTENTION
When adjusting, it is necessary to exclude the possibility of misalignment of the shaft-sector, for which we turn both bearings alternately at a small angle until the clearances in the engagement are eliminated.

The screw turning moment on the adjusted mechanism should be 10–18 kgf.cm. We fix the eccentric rings from turning, bending their shoulders with a beard into the holes of the crankcase.
We assemble the steering gear in reverse order and install it on the car.
When assembling, we wet the foam rubber shaft seal - the sectors with transmission oil, and the spline joint - with SHRUS-4 or SHRB-4 grease.

How to repair a steering Gazelle on your own in a garage? Let's talk about this, illustrating what has been said with pictures and videos.

You need to work in a systematic and accurate manner.

As a rule, this operation involves repairing the steering gear. When should it be done?

  • The steering wheel suddenly became "heavy" for no reason.
  • A backlash of more than 20-25⁰ appeared in the gearbox.
  • There were specific knocks in the crankcase, vibrations.
  • Oil leakage is visually observed.

To do this, you will have to dissolve the fastening of the front pair of wheels, hang out the front axle, remove the wheels. Turn the steering wheel to the right and left until it stops, knock out the steering rod, remove the gearbox with the bipod. The algorithm for reducing the backlash of the steering Gazelle is as follows (you can clearly see it in the lightbox below).

1... Remove the knot.

2-3... Remove the plastic protection (cover) and foam seal.

4-5... Unscrew the 4 fixing bolts of the cover, remove it.

6... Remove one of the shims.

7... It remains to assemble the assembly in reverse order.

After the problems with the backlash are resolved, you should deal with the eccentric shim rings. To avoid skewing, they must be rotated alternately with a fixed force (10-18 kgf / cm).At the end of the work, you need to lubricate the foam seal with gear oil, grease the splines with grease (SHRB-4 or SHRUS-4), put the part in place.

Of course, this is a general scheme for repairing a steering Gazelle. In practice, special cases may occur with other malfunctions of the steering Gazelle. Some of the repairs are shown in these two videos:
