In detail: do-it-yourself mtz 82 steering column repair from a real master for the site my.housecope.com.
To connect the inlet sleeve of the device, you first need to unscrew the process plug (it is located on top of the safety valve box). The drain hose is connected to the hydraulic system tank. Start the engine and at the nominal speed of the crankshaft turn the steering wheel to the right or left until it stops. We rotate the handle of the device and set the pressure on the pressure gauge to 5.0 MPa, mark the readings on the scale of expenses. If the difference in the readings of the device when monitoring the supply of working fluid to the distributor and checking for leaks exceeds 5 l / min, the distributor must be repaired.
The pressure at which the safety valve of the steering hydraulic system is actuated is determined by a pressure gauge, which is screwed into the place of the technological plug (Fig. 2.3.8).
Rice. 2.3.8. How to check and adjust the set pressure of the tractor relief valve:
1 - pressure gauge; 2 - adjusting screw with locknut
To control, the tractor engine is started and at (the rated speed of the crankshaft, the oil drain is completely closed with the handle of the device. The wheels are turned to failure. Then, on the pressure gauge, they look at the actual pressure at which the safety valve turns on.
The valve must be adjusted in case of low or high set pressure. To do this, unscrew the cap, loosen the locknut of the adjusting screw and, holding the steering wheel in the final position of the turn until it stops, unscrew or screw in the adjusting screw until the required pressure is obtained.
If you find that there are sharp shocks when turning the tractor, then most likely the tightening of the spool nut of the hydraulic distributor has loosened, or the clearances of the steering rods have increased.
Video (click to play). |
If the spool nut loosens, the front idlers will vibrate. It is clearly felt when moving at high speeds. It should be borne in mind that at first it is necessary to adjust the clearances in the steering rod joints, and only then, with a torque wrench, tighten the castle nut of the distributor spool with a force of no more than 20 N * m. Then it is released until the holes for the cotter pin are aligned.
What are the main malfunctions of the power steering of the MTZ-80, MTZ-82 tractor? Let's start with the wear of the splines of the worm shaft and the teeth of the sector. Further wear of the gear rack, wear and leakage of the safety valve. Wear and discrepancy in the hydraulic density of precise parts (spools, plungers, sleeves).
It is possible that when checking the condition of the units of the hydraulic steering system of the tractor, such malfunctions will be found that cannot be eliminated by ordinary adjustment operations. In this case, the power steering is removed completely and disassembled for further technical examination and replacement of parts.
How to do all this, how to correctly carry out the basic operations for disassembly-assembly and adjustment of the MTZ power steering are shown below in Figures 2.3.9-2.3.30.
Before dismantling the power steering, pour out the working fluid and unscrew the nut of the steering shaft 4. And already in the process of assembling the power steering, carefully look at the tightening forces of the nuts, the clarity and unambiguity of the alignment of the marks of the steering shaft, sector and rack, and pay attention to adjusting the vertical movement of the steering shaft.
Assembly-disassembly and other adjustment operations that are carried out during the repair of the power steering are not entirely simple and require the use of a control and test stand upon completion of the assembly to adjust all parameters.
The repaired power steering is brought to perfection on the control and testing equipment KI-4896M.During debugging work, they look at the free play of the steering wheel with the vertical power steering shaft fixed. The range should be within 4-6°. Evaluate the operation of the hydraulic booster under load at an inlet pressure of 5-6 MPa. The mechanical stress on the rudder rim must not exceed 50 Newtons.

Safety, quality of work and fatigue of the driver largely depend on the state of the steering of the MTZ-80, MTZ-82 tractor. Therefore, the maintenance of the steering must be carried out especially carefully.
Maintenance of the MTZ-80, MTZ-82 steering consists in periodically monitoring the oil level in the hydraulic booster housing and replacing it, lubricating the universal joints of the steering gear, monitoring the condition of the threaded connections of the steering gear and steering rods, bipod and swing arms, fastening the sector, checking and steering wheel free play adjustment.
The steering column of the MTZ-80, MTZ-82 tractor must be adjusted in order to eliminate possible vibrations on the steering wheel. To do this, hand tighten the nut 12 (see Fig. 1) to
contact of the latter with the sleeve 10. In this case, the gaps in the joints must be selected, Then the nut 12 is unscrewed by one and a half turns and countered with the nut 13.

The oil filter is washed in the following sequence:
Raise the cladding. Disconnect the oil supply line 12 (see Fig. 2) from the cover 11 of the pressure reducing valve 14. Remove the cover, for which first unscrew the two bolts securing it to the body 22, and then, using them as dismantling ones, screw the bolts into the dismantling holes of the cover and remove her.
Disconnect the remaining oil lines from the pressure reducing valve 14. Holding the filter 13 by hand, unscrew the pressure reducing valve and remove the drain filter. Wash the filter in diesel fuel. To install the filter, the operations are performed in the reverse order: The filter is washed at TO-3 (960-1000 hours of operation). At the same time, it is necessary to tighten the nut 8 of the sector fastening on the rotary shaft.

Adjustment of the power steering MTZ-80, MTZ-82
They check the engagement of the worm-sector and the sector-rail, the tightness of the worm nut, the axial travel of the rotary shaft, the safety valve, and the control of the differential lock valve. The "worm-sector" engagement and the tightening of the nut of the worm of the GUR MTZ-80, MTZ-82 are regulated in the following sequence. Jack up the tractor so that the front wheels do not touch the ground.
Then loosen the tightening of the adjusting bolt 5, insert the key into the groove of the sleeve 6 and turn it clockwise until the teeth of the worm and the sector stop (in this case, the bipod 18 should
be in the middle position). The sleeve is turned counterclockwise so that it rotates 10-12 mm along the outer diameter. Tighten the bolt 5. Start the engine and check the absence of jamming in the “worm-sector” engagement when turning the steering wheel in both directions until it stops.
If at the same time jamming occurs, then it is necessary to increase the gap in the engagement by releasing the bolt 5 and turning the sleeve 6 additionally clockwise. The force on the steering wheel should not exceed 30-40 N. Adjusting the tightening of the spherical nut 30 of the worm of the power steering MTZ-80, MTZ-82 consists in the correct tightening of the thrust ball bearings 28 to ensure normal preloaded bearing rings of the ends of the spool 31.
The correct operation of the power steering MTZ-80, MTZ-82 largely depends on the correct adjustments. Overtightening nut 30 can cause the spool to skew and increase turning force. The gaps between the bearings and the spool lead to an increase in the free play of the steering wheel, as well as to vibrations of the wheels, since under these conditions the spool can move arbitrarily, changing the direction of the oil flow into one or another cavity of the piston cylinder, respectively.
Before tightening the nut 30, unscrew the four bolts securing the distributor, remove the cover 29.The distributor MTZ-80, MTZ-82 is fixed with two diametrically located bolts to the body of the hydraulic booster, placing a set of washers (or nut) under the bolt heads, the thickness (or height) of which is equal to the thickness of the cover flange 29. Tighten, having previously unpinned, the nut with a torque of 20 Nm . In this case, the bearing rings 28 must be tightly pressed against the ends of the spool 31.
Then unscrew the nut 1/10-1/12 of a turn to align the slot of the nut for the cotter pin and the hole in the worm, and cotter the nut. Unscrew the two bolts screwed into the housing,
replace the cover 29 and fix the distributor. The “sector-rail” engagement of the GUR MTZ-80, MTZ-82 is regulated by gaskets 24 under the flange of the stop 23 of the rail. In this case, the gap between the stop and rail 9 should be 0.1-0.3 mm. Checking this gap, you need to press the rail 9 to sector 7.
The axial stroke of the rotary shaft of the MTZ-80, MTZ-82 tractor is adjusted in the following sequence: loosen the lock nut and screw the adjusting screw 10 all the way into the end of the shaft. Then turn out the bolt 10 pa 1/8-1/10 of a turn and lock it with a nut.
The safety valve is checked as follows. Instead of plug 1, a pressure gauge is connected to the discharge line or to the valve cover with a division scale from 0 to
10 MPa. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from one extreme position to another. At the maximum frequency of rotation of the diesel crankshaft, bring the oil temperature in the hydraulic system to 50±5°C. In this case, the pressure should reach 8.8 MPa.
If the pressure gauge reading is less, increase the pressure to the required values by slowly screwing in screw 3. After adjusting screw 3, lock it with a nut and install the cap.
A sign of a violation of the adjustment of the safety valve of the MTZ-80, MTZ-82 hydraulic booster is an increase in effort on the steering wheel.
The free play of the steering wheel is checked in the parking lot with the engine running. However, it should not exceed 20 °. If the steering wheel free play is greater, check
gaps in the joints of the MTZ-80, MTZ-82 steering gear and, if necessary, tighten the nuts for fastening the bipod and sector, fastening the swing arms of the front axles and
steering rod joints, tightening the worm nut, adjusting the “worm-sector”, “sector-rail” engagement and the axial stroke of the hydraulic booster rotary shaft.
It is necessary to monitor the oil level in the hydraulic steering system of the MTZ80, MTZ-82 tractor. If the oil level is less than the lower mark on the oil gauge, it is strictly forbidden to work on the tractor. When changing the oil, the filler filter must be flushed at the same time.
After changing the oil, the hydraulic steering system of the MTZ-80, MTZ-82 tractor is pumped in the following order:
Jack up the front axle until the front wheels are off the ground. Start the engine and, at a low engine speed, turn the steering wheel to
extreme positions 8-10 times (at first slowly, then quickly), without holding it in extreme positions. Then check the oil level and top up if necessary.
it to the top mark of the oil gauge. The distributor has to be removed and reinstalled in case of replacement of its sealing rings and washing of parts.
When installing the MTZ-80, MTZ-82 distributor, do the following. Check the presence of sealing rings on the ends of the distributor and the position of the spool 31 in its body.
The spool must be installed so that its end face with a chamfer along the outer diameter is directed towards the hydraulic booster housing. Opposite installation of the spool will result in
a sharp increase in turning force.
The MTZ-80, MTZ-82 tractor distributor is installed without an outer cover 29 and fastened to the MTZ hydraulic booster housing with two diametrically located bolts,
placing a set of washers under the bolt heads, the thickness of which is equal to the height of the cover. Put the thrust bearing 28, the washer with a cone and tighten the spherical nut 30 in accordance with
the recommendations above.
A sign of the correct tightening of the nut is the absence of gaps between the spool and bearing rings and the steering wheel recoil (return of the spool to the neutral position) after
stop rotating to the left.

GUR MTZ-82 (power steering) is installed on agricultural machinery in order to reduce the effort of the tractor driver, which he makes in order to turn the steering wheel. At the same time, the maneuverability of the tractor increases under any conditions in which you have to work.
When moving the power steering of the tractor, the MTZ is connected and functions not only when the steering wheel is turned, but also under the influence of the movement of the front wheels, which oscillate due to uneven ground. At the same time, the GUR MTZ acts on the other side, relative to the rotation of the wheels. This has a good effect on the movement of agricultural machinery in a straight line, to a large extent reduces the transmission of vibrations and other adverse effects from the front wheels.
The Minsk Tractor Works provided all of its Belarus equipment with a hydraulic booster, primarily to make it easier for tractor operators to control a tractor equipped with attachments. Indeed, under its influence, a double load is placed on the front wheels, and the driver has to exert the maximum amount of effort to control such a heavy machine. The MTZ power steering has a built-in hydraulic system, the design of which includes the following main elements:
- Distributor.
- Dosing pump and power cylinder.
- Rear axle differential lock sensor.
The design of the GUR MTZ includes the following structural elements:
- The housing in which the container is located, where the desired oil will be stored, and the bases to which the parts will be attached.
- A pump designed to move oil in a hydraulic circuit.
- A sector attached to a rotary shaft that constantly comes into contact with the steering element.
- Rotary shaft, which has 3 points of support. With the help of it, the turning movement is transmitted to the bipod, which, in turn, is connected to the front wheels of the vehicle.
- The rail that comes into contact with the moving sector, it transmits piston movement to it.
- Spool attached between 3 pairs of sliders, which are held by special springs. This element is attached to the end of the steering column worm.
- A filter designed to purify the oil moving in a hydraulic installation.
- A relief valve designed to prevent the pressure of the desired fluid from rising to an unacceptable level.
A blocking automation system, on which a number of other elements are located (spool, flywheel, sensor, valve and probe), is needed to block the rear axle differential. The key principle of the power steering is to increase the hydraulic force with an increase in resistance when turning agricultural machinery. The resistance that is formed when the machine is turned causes a displacement from the axis of the steering column worm. Because of this, the springs of the sliders are compressed. As soon as this resistance exceeds the compression force of all springs, the spool moves and allows the specialized fluid to enter one of the power cylinder tanks.
The oil, in turn, changes the position of the piston, and its force, with the help of a rack, enters the gear sector, with the help of which the rotary shaft is rotated. When the resistance that arose during the turn subsides, the springs return to their original, straightened position, and the spool falls into place, thereby preventing more working fluid from flowing into the cylinder. If a situation arises in which the resistance when turning does not increase so much as to exceed the compression force of the springs, then the power steering does not start its operation.
The main malfunctions of the power steering relate primarily to the gear rack, sector and worm. In addition, alteration of the GUR MTZ may be required if its design has been compromised or the safety valve has become unusable. If during the diagnostics of the components of the power steering, any malfunctions were detected, it is necessary to figure out whether the usual adjustment of the MTZ power steering can be carried out or the adjustment operations will be insufficient and a more thorough repair will be needed.
To eliminate a breakdown that affects, for example, a distributor, it will be necessary to remove the hydraulic booster from agricultural machinery and disassemble it. In the future, an examination will be carried out and the necessary parts will be replaced.
Before adjusting or repairing the hydraulic booster, it is necessary to drain the working fluid and loosen the nut of the rotary shaft.
The converted unit must be re-installed on the tractor with all care - pay attention to the degree of tightening the nuts, make sure that the marks of the rotary shaft and other elements fall into place.
On an adjusted hydraulic booster, you can “leave” quite far. However, when carrying out work, you should be careful and follow the basic rules for carrying out such work. Otherwise, you can break an important part. If you do not have the necessary skills, it is better to entrust the adjustment issues to specialists.

tell me about the hydraulics of the gur, what is there and how to adjust it on the mtz 82. the problem is in turning the steering wheel, it doesn’t turn to the right at all, but half to the left. free play 1.5 turns at the helm. and when I turn to the left, the wheels turn a little later than the steering wheel.
What exactly is broken in there. Remove the upper cover, look at the nut on the bipod, from below, check the play on the splines, it should not hang out! also check the sector from above, look at the sector-worm engagement.
it's all done already. the nut is in place, the splines do not dangle, the worm gearing sector dangles, but is not critical. I can not quite understand how this system works and why the steering wheel does not turn.
I had this, did not turn in one direction
the thrust bearing was broken, in the gur distributor, in front it is necessary to remove the cover with 4 bolts
the bearings are all intact, the engagement is normal with both the worm gear and the cylinder. there are no backlashes. What is the lock sensor and what is its function? could it be a problem?
If everything is fine, then check how the steering knuckles, that is, final drives. If 82, they turn.
Now I took everything apart, cleaned it, put it back together, the situation has changed, it turns out that it spins almost two turns in one direction, and somewhere around 0.8 turns in the other. and the problem with delay remained. you turn the steering wheel, the wheels a little later. on the go did not try the truth. how many revolutions of the steering wheel should be in each direction?
It started with the fact that the wheels began to chatter, according to the advice, I set the convergence to zero, although I think how it started, because everything was normal. pull out the lawn, pull it out, go home, but it doesn’t turn to the right, to the left as it should, but it only lags with the turn, the sensations are not clear. 8 as the topic author writes) And then it’s as if the steering wheel rests against some kind of limiter, I thought I’d tear off the steering wheel. While driving home, I thought where the hydraulic cylinder piston should go when turning left and right, I decided to start with it. stock, the gur still worked with a delay, but the chatter was while holding the cotter pin on the nut, naturally there was a backlash. Now I’ll go for a new one.
I changed the cylinder at once, now the new one is standing, all the same, you need to catch the steering wheel along the road and spin a little in one direction. fingers in the rods, bipod and distributor also put new ones.
Well, is the length of the rods the same? Is the rack right? Maybe the teeth are not right? Damn, there are no rods for sale separately .. I don’t want to dump 1600 for a new one
yes, the rail on the marks, the thrust is the same. Well, there is play in the rail, is it somehow regulated there?
Yes, it is regulated by throwing the gaskets out from under the lock sensor. By the way, do you have an eccentric on the worm? then it will be hard to turn, and it seems like it almost doesn’t turn in one direction at all. You need to look. Is there a free wheeling of the steering wheel?
yes, as soon as I didn’t twist this eccentric, there are no changes at all. and what kind of blockage sensor, I don’t understand what role it plays?
There are shims under it, the rail-sector clearance is adjusted, if from the cab side, then on the left side
Oh damn it .. And how was the distributor installed, the nut on it was probably tightened with a wrench, the one that is cottered? Is the steering wheel tight, light?
no, the distributor was tightened by hand with a slight backlash. the steering wheel is relatively easy to turn, only with a delay and few revolutions. Well, the fact that there are adjusting shims under the sensor, I understand, today I will try to remove the gap. and that's why it's needed at all. If it's a blocking sensor, then it must block something? what and where? and how it works. I also twisted it in different directions. no changes.
The lock sensor controls the rear axle differential lock. The blocking is activated from the cab and has 3 positions (automatic forced on) In the “automatic” position, the sensor monitors the position of the front wheels, disables the blocking when the steering wheel is turned and turns it on when the tractor moves in a straight line.
How should this sensor be connected? My lock doesn't work.
Look in this thread https://my.housecope.com/wp-content/uploads/ext/967/forum/selskokhozyaistvennaya-tekhnika/136660 there are pictures and a description of the blocking device.
Yes, hands will not reach the tractor yet. kakmaz my brain endures. I bought a new one for a tractor, I'll try to change it the other day, maybe it will help.
Well, then it remains to remove this entire system and put up a mountain.
Well, then it remains to remove this entire system and put up a mountain.
if you don’t delve into the principle of operation, then the mountain won’t help either. Are the marks all right? The sector-rail marks are visible through the filler neck of the power steering
fine. Everything is fine there, but it just doesn't work. As it warms up, I'll change it.
Last week, in the forest, my tractor refused to turn first to the left, and then half an hour later and to the right, the steering wheel was a stake and I could barely turn the wheels on the move, at least the brakes work well, with their help, with grief, I reached the house in half. The reason turned out to be in a jammed glass in the onboard bushing. when disassembling with the help of a WD hammer, mountings and some kind of mother somehow managed to remove the onboard kingpin from the kingpin (I installed a new kingpin in the autumn, there is no takeaway in the sleeve) from 5 to 10 mm. Lubrication is present - the lower part of the sleeve is all in nigrol, the upper even the lithol did not have time to dry and the rubber bands are normal. well, it wasn’t available in the store. I came home and checked the hydraulic part with the device, everything was fine, but it turned out to be in mechanics. For the first time in my life, I’ve encountered such crap in more than two decades oty on technology and with it.

Adjustment of the power steering MTZ-80, 82
They check the engagement of the worm-sector and the sector-rail, the tightness of the worm nut, the axial travel of the rotary shaft, the safety valve, and the control of the differential lock valve.
The "worm-sector" engagement and the tightening of the nut of the worm of the GUR MTZ-80, MTZ-82 are regulated in the following sequence:
– Jack up the tractor so that the front wheels do not touch the ground.
- Then loosen the tightening of the adjusting bolt 5, insert the key into the groove of the sleeve 6 and turn it clockwise until the teeth of the worm and the sector stop (at the same time, the bipod 18 should be in the middle position).
- The sleeve is turned counterclockwise so that it rotates 10-12 mm along the outer diameter. Tighten bolt 5.
- Start the engine and check the absence of jamming in the “worm-sector” engagement when turning the steering wheel in both directions until it stops.
– If at the same time jamming occurs, then it is necessary to increase the gap in the engagement by releasing the bolt 5 and turning the sleeve 6 additionally clockwise. The force on the steering wheel should not exceed 30-40 N.
Adjusting the tightening of the spherical nut 30 of the power steering worm MTZ-80, MTZ-82 consists in the correct tightening of the thrust ball bearings 28 to ensure that the spool ends of the spool 31 are normally pressed by the bearing rings.
Before tightening the nut 30, unscrew the four bolts securing the distributor, remove the cover 29. Attach the distributor with two diametrically spaced bolts to the hydraulic booster housing, placing a set of washers (or a nut) under the bolt heads, the thickness (or height) of which is equal to the thickness of the cover flange 29.
Tighten, having previously unpinned, the nut with a torque of 20 Nm. In this case, the bearing rings 28 must be tightly pressed against the ends of the spool 31.
Then unscrew the nut 1/10-1/12 of a turn to align the slot of the nut for the cotter pin and the hole in the worm, and cotter the nut.
Unscrew the two bolts screwed into the housing, put the cover 29 in place and fix the distributor.
The axial stroke of the tractor rotary shaft is adjusted in the following sequence:
– Loosen the lock nut and screw the adjusting screw 10 into the end of the shaft until it stops. Then turn out the bolt 10 pa 1/8-1/10 of a turn and lock it with a nut.
– The safety valve is checked as follows. Instead of plug 1, a pressure gauge with a division scale from 0 to 10 MPa is connected to the discharge line or to the valve cover.
– Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from one extreme position to another.
If the free play of the steering wheel is greater, check the gaps in the joints of the MTZ-80, MTZ-82 steering gear and, if necessary, tighten the nuts for fastening the bipod and sector, fastening the swing arms of the front axles and steering rod joints, tightening the worm nut, adjusting the “worm-sector” engagement ”, “sector-rail” and the axial stroke of the hydraulic booster rotary shaft.
It is necessary to monitor the oil level in the hydraulic steering system. If the oil level is less than the lower mark on the oil gauge, it is strictly forbidden to work on the tractor. When changing the oil, the filler filter must be flushed at the same time.
After changing the oil, the hydraulic steering system of the MTZ-80, 82 tractor is pumped in the following order:
– Jack up the front axle until the front wheels are off the ground.
- Start the engine and, at a low engine speed, turn the steering wheel to the extreme positions 8-10 times (at first slowly, then quickly), without holding it in the extreme positions.
– Then check the oil level and, if necessary, add it to the top mark of the oil dipstick. The distributor has to be removed and reinstalled in case of replacement of its sealing rings and washing of parts.
When installing the distributor, do the following. Check the presence of sealing rings on the ends of the distributor and the position of the spool 31 in its body.
The spool must be installed so that its end face with a chamfer along the outer diameter is directed towards the hydraulic booster housing. Installing the spool in the opposite direction will result in a sharp increase in turning force.
A distributor is installed without an outer cover 29 and fastened to the body of the MTZ hydraulic booster with two diametrically located bolts, placing a set of washers under the bolt heads, the thickness of which is equal to the height of the cover.
Put the thrust bearing 28, the washer with a cone and tighten the spherical nut 30 in accordance with
the recommendations above.

A sign of the correct tightening of the nut is the absence of gaps between the spool and the bearing rings and the steering wheel kickback (spool returns to the neutral position) after it stops turning to the left.
