Disassembly: 1) At the very beginning of the operation, you will need to remove it from the car, since it will be much more difficult to repair the gearbox if it is installed on the car, and there is nothing to it. 2) Now, when the gearbox is removed, take and put it on a clean surface, then take a wrench and use it to completely unscrew the nut that secures the bipod to it as shown in the photo below:
3) Then, using a special puller, press (If this word is not familiar to you, then you can read the word: "Remove" instead) the bipod from the shaft on which it is put on, for this you will first need to install the puller on the bipod as shown in photo, after installation, the consequence of tightening the bolt that is indicated by the red arrow will start to slowly remove the bipod, and all this will happen due to the fact that the bolt will press on the tip of the shaft (indicated by the blue arrow) and thus the bolt will, as it were, wrap into this tip and the bipod in this regard will be slowly removed.
Note! If you do not have such a puller and you do not need to purchase it, since you do this procedure very rarely, then you can use two hammers and use them to knock down the bipod, for this we rest the tip of the shaft (indicated by the red arrow) on a wooden block and put after that, there are two hammers on the bipod, choose one of the hammers so that it is large, you can even take a sledgehammer, and take the other hammer the most common one and then start to press on one of the bipod stops with a large hammer, and hit the other bipod stop with a regular hammer and so on the way the bipod will be removed!
As a last resort, if you do not feel sorry for the bipod, then you can cut it off with a cutting machine, but you only need to cut it off in the place where it is fastened to the shaft itself, but when cutting off, do not touch the shaft itself, otherwise it will have to be replaced with a new one !
4) After that, when the bipod is removed, you will need to drain the oil from the steering gear, how to do this, read the article called: "Replacing the transmission oil in the steering gear for a VAZ".
Note! This article, which is linked to, shows how to drain the oil on the installed gearbox, but you have it removed, but this does not play a big role!
5) Next, take a wrench and use it to unscrew the four bolts (indicated by arrows) that attach the top cover to the steering gear and after they are turned out, remove it as shown in photo 2.
6) Next, grasp the shaft with your hand on which the bipod was put on and then remove it from the gearbox (it will be more correct from the crankcase) together with the roller that is on it.
7) Now we turn to the worm shaft, in order to remove it, it will be necessary to unscrew the four bolts that secure its cover with a wrench, and after the bolts are unscrewed, remove the cover that covers the worm shaft and remove in addition all the gaskets that will be located behind the cover (see photo under number 2).
Note! These ball bearing adjusting gaskets are sold in car dealerships with a thickness of 0.1 and 0.15 mm!
8) Then, picking up a hammer (preferably made of soft metal, and if it is not there, then put a small plank under a regular hammer when you hit the worm shaft, so as not to damage or deform the shaft itself with blows of a conventional hammer), carefully knock out with the help of it, the worm shaft from the gearbox housing together with the bearings that are located on it.
9) Then, using a screwdriver, remove the two cuffs (both are removed in the same way, so the example in the photo is shown only on the cuff that goes to the worm shaft), one of them will need to be removed, which goes to the worm shaft, and the other that goes to the shaft to which the bipod is installed.
10) Next, using a bit and a hammer, knock out the outer race of the second bearing as shown in the figure.
Assembly: 1. Basically, all the parts are assembled in the reverse order of their removal, and all internal parts are lubricated before assembly with gear oil, in addition, when assembling, you need to know what nuances, firstly, always remember that the bipod is installed on the shaft in only one position , that is, if you look at it there is a wide groove on the bipod, this very groove on the bipod should coincide with the double slot that is located on the shaft and which are indicated in the photo below with a screwdriver.
2. Secondly, if you decide to change the shaft on which the bipod is installed, pay your attention to the screw head (indicated by the blue arrow) and to the groove that is present on the shaft itself (it is still indicated by the red arrow), and so the axial clearance between the shaft groove and the screw head must necessarily be no more than 0.05 mm, so you have to adjust the axial clearance when installing a new shaft, and it is adjusted by selecting the thickness of the adjusting plate.
Note! For clarity, so that you have at least some idea of what an adjustment plate is, it was indicated in the photo below with a red arrow, in total these plates have eleven sizes and a thickness from 1.95 to 2.20 mm, an increase in each size is 0.025 mm!
3.Thirdly, when you install the inner ring of the bearing, it is installed using a piece of pipe, that is, a section of a suitable diameter is found and then a hammer is taken, then with their help and not very strong hammer blows, we press the inner ring of the bearing into the crankcase.
Note! When the inner ring (indicated by the blue arrow) is installed, then install a cage with balls (indicated by the red arrow) in it, and after installation insert the worm shaft (indicated by the number 11) onto which you will then need to put on the cage of the outer bearing (indicated by the number 6) and with a hammer (not with strong blows) press in the outer ring, which is indicated by the fifth digit!
4. And finally, you will need to install the cover and all the gaskets and then press in both cuffs (They are also called oil seals) with a hammer and a piece of pipe, while one cuff is a worm shaft cuff and the other is a bipod shaft, but before put them, lubricate them with Litol-24 grease or something like it.
Note! When install the worm shaft, use a set of shims (the gaskets are indicated by number 4 in the photo above) so that the torque of the worm shaft is from 2 to 5 kgf • cm, then replace the shaft on which the bipod is put on and adjust the engagement gap by the moment of turning the shaft (This gap should be within 7-9 kgf • cm, and when the worm shaft is turned 30 ° to the left and right, it should smoothly decrease to 5 kgf • cm)!
What else, when all the operations are completed, pour gear oil into the gearbox housing, up to the lower edge of the filler hole, this is about 0.215 liters!

One of the elements of the VAZ 2107, which has received a number of improvements in this model in comparison with the previous ones, is the steering column. What is the difference between her device? In the VAZ 2107, the steering column shaft consists of two parts, connected by a cross. Thanks to this design, the safety of the driver is significantly increased, since in the event of a collision, the shaft simply bends at the point of the articulated joint, and does not cause serious harm to humans. Also, the shaft in the VAZ 2107 acquired bearings, so that turning the steering wheel requires much less effort.
The steering column of the VAZ 2107 consists of a shaft with a swivel joint and a gearbox with a worm gear. Column repair is very rare. If you ensure timely maintenance of this unit, then it may never be needed. Steering column maintenance includes greasing the steering shaft joint, tightening the steering wheel nut, changing the oil and adjusting the gearbox. Let's take a look at the possible problems associated with the steering column and the methods of their elimination.
As a rule, squeaking occurs due to insufficient lubrication of the shaft parts - bearings or cross. It is treated with lubrication, does not cause special difficulties, repairs are not required.
There are two reasons for rudder play. First, the nut that secures the steering wheel to the shaft is released. Failure to tighten the nut in time will damage the splines on the handlebar and shaft, and one of these parts may need to be replaced. The second reason can be the wear of the worm gear. To eliminate this malfunction, a special device is provided - an adjusting bolt with a lock nut.
In order to adjust the worm gear, the nut is released, with a screwdriver the screw is turned until the backlash is eliminated, after which the nut is tightened to prevent spontaneous unscrewing. If it is impossible to eliminate the backlash by adjusting, then it is necessary to repair the gearbox and replace the worm gear pair.
To prevent premature wear of the gearbox parts, it is recommended to periodically check the oil level and change it. Level control is performed as follows:
Using a key 8, the filler plug is unscrewed;
Check the oil level with a screwdriver or other object. It should be flush with the bottom edge of the filler hole.
If necessary, add oil using a special blower until it starts to flow out of the hole.
To change the oil, unscrew the screws securing the gearbox cover, after placing a container under it to collect the used oil. Since complete removal of the cover is not required, it moves to the side and the oil is drained. This operation is best done with a hot engine. Warm oil is more fluid and drains faster. After all the oil has drained out, the cover is screwed into place and a new one is poured into the gearbox as described above.
The device of the gearbox does not allow repairing it without removing it from the car. In order to remove it, you must:
Disconnect the tie rod ends from the gearbox. First, they are cottered, then the nuts are unscrewed with a 22 key and the tips are pressed out using a special puller.
Unscrew the clamp securing the steering shaft to the gearbox.
Remove the three bolts that secure the gearbox to the vehicle body.
The device of the gearbox should not cause any particular difficulties during its repair. It should only be taken into account that worn-out elements, called a worm pair, both change at the same time. After this, adjustment is mandatory.
First you need to understand where the backlash occurs, since the backlash in the steering column can be in three places, such as.
Backlash in the steering tips (knocking fingers means they need to be replaced).
Backlash in the steering bipod (the working shaft has developed, to find out you need to pull the steering bipod itself from under the car).
Backlash in the steering worm (can be eliminated if there is a supply of nut).
And so you probably already figured out where the backlash occurs in the steering column, but today we will talk specifically about adjusting the backlash of the steering column VAZ 2107. The first step is to put the steering wheel in a straight position so that the wheels are straight.
Then, with sharp jerks, pull the steering wheel to the left, to the right (this must be done in order to understand where the backlash is), after which, unscrew the locknut on the steering housing (be careful and do not damage).
Further, with direct hardening, you need to adjust the VAZ 2107 steering column worm itself.
How to adjust the steering column of a VAZ, there are only two adjustment options.
1. If you tighten then the backlash will disappear, but the steering wheel will also turn tighter as you tighten the steering shaft (to be more precise, the steering arm worm).
2. But if you unscrew a turn, then the steering wheel will turn softer and easier, but the backlash will not appear large.
Some motorists do not make a big backlash in the VAZ steering column themselves and advise doing the same, explaining it like this! - that in this way there is less wear of the steering worm itself and the working pair and the steering wheel turns softer, which is important. You can also tighten the steering worm at any time if the backlash becomes stronger.

When the mechanism is removed from the vehicle, you can start disassembling it.
After disassembling the steering gear, they carry out its troubleshooting. All elements are pre-cleaned by washing in diesel fuel. Each part is carefully examined for damage, scoring, wear. Particular attention is paid to the rubbing surfaces of the worm shaft and roller. The rotation of the bearings must be free of seizure. There should be no damage, as well as traces of wear on the outer races, cages and balls. The gearbox housing itself must not be cracked. All parts that show visible wear must be replaced.
Oil seals, regardless of their condition, are replaced with new ones.
When the defective elements have been replaced, you can start assembling the unit. Parts that are installed inside the crankcase are lubricated with gear oil. The assembly is performed in the following order:
Using a hammer and a guide or other suitable device, press the inner bearing race into the steering unit housing. The inner bearing race is pressed in with a hammer and a guide
A cage with balls and a worm shaft are placed in the cage. The outer bearing cage is placed on it and the outer cage is pressed in. After installing the worm shaft and the outer bearing, the outer cage is pressed in
A cover with gaskets is mounted and the worm shaft and bipod oil seals are pressed in. A small amount of grease is preliminarily applied to the working edges of the cuffs.
Place the worm shaft into the mechanism housing. Using the adjusting shims, the torque is set, its rotation is from 2 to 5 kgf * cm.
Install the short thrust shaft.
At the end of the work, grease is poured into the steering column and the plug is wrapped.
Installation of the unit on the machine is carried out in the reverse order.
The adjustment work of the steering gear on the VAZ 2107 is resorted to in the case when the steering wheel began to rotate tightly, jamming appeared during rotation, or when the steering shaft was moved along the axis with straight wheels.

The assistant begins to intensively rotate the steering wheel to the right and left, and the second person with the adjusting screw achieves the desired position in the engagement of the gears. In this case, the steering wheel should rotate easily and have a minimum free play. Adjustment is carried out by turning the adjusting screw with a screwdriver
When the adjustment is complete, hold the screw with a screwdriver and tighten the nut.
To reduce the friction of the internal elements of the steering column, gear oil GL-4, GL-5 with a viscosity grade of SAE75W90, SAE80W90 or SAE85W90 is poured into the mechanism. In the old fashioned way, for the node under consideration, many car owners use TAD-17 oil. The filling volume of the gearbox on the VAZ 2107 is 0.215 liters.
To avoid premature failure of the mechanism parts, it is necessary to periodically check the oil level and replace it. It should be borne in mind that, although slowly, the fluid from the gearbox leaks, and the leakage occurs regardless of whether the column is new or old. The level is checked as follows:

Using a screwdriver or other tool, check the oil level in the crankcase. The normal level should be at the bottom edge of the filler hole. Use a screwdriver or other tool to check the oil level in the gearbox.
If necessary, add grease with a syringe until it starts flowing out of the filler hole.
Twist the plug and wipe the steering gear from smudges.

In addition to the new lubricant, you will need two syringes of the largest possible volume (purchased at the pharmacy) and a small piece of washer hose. The filler plug is unscrewed with a key, a piece of tube is put on the syringe, the old oil is drawn in and poured into a prepared container. Remove old grease from the steering column with a syringe
The second syringe is poured into the gearbox with new grease to the desired level, while it is recommended to rotate the steering wheel. New grease is taken into the syringe, after which it is poured into the gearbox
Screw in the plug and wipe off any traces of oil.
