But it must be remembered that the maximum gross weight of the "Porter" does not exceed 3.5 tons, so the use of a steering rack in it is fully justified. Moreover, the “pinion-rack” steering mechanism has half or even three times less cost than the “screw-nut” mechanisms used on heavier Hyundai trucks and buses.
The steering gears used on Hyundai Porter are divided into three categories:
• Steering racks for Porter without power steering;

The steering rack is based on a rack and pinion mechanism; it consists of a horizontal toothed rack and a helical gear that engages with it, located on the shaft (thus, the shaft is perpendicular to the rack). The steering gear is installed on the front axle, its steering tips are connected to the levers of the pivot pins of the wheels, and the pinion shaft is connected through a flange to the intermediate steering shaft. If the steering rack is with power steering, then two pipelines are also connected to the pump and the reservoir.
The steering mechanism of Hyundai Porter without power steering works most simply. The force from the driver's hands through the steering wheel and steering column is fed to the bevel gear, and from it through the intermediate shaft to the gear shaft. The gear, turning in one direction or the other, forces the rack to shift, which, in turn, transmits the force to the pivot pins of the wheels through the steering rods. The power steering mechanism is more complicated. When you turn the steering wheel, the gear shaft turns, on which there is a spool (valve) - it opens, providing the supply of working fluid under pressure to one of the power steering cylinders, and at the same time opening the free exit of fluid from the opposite cylinder. Due to the pressure difference that occurs, a higher force is applied to the rack than from the driver's hands, and turning requires less effort from the driver. When the steering wheel is turned to the other side, the spool redistributes the flow of the working fluid, and the power steering pushes the rack in the other direction.
It should be noted that both types of steering mechanisms provide feedback, that is, they transfer reactive moments from the wheels to the steering wheel, which is important for comfortable control and making the right decisions while driving. Feedback is provided by the mechanical part of the steering mechanism, that is, by the rack and the gear connected to it (in fact, the steering wheel is directly connected to the wheels).
Thanks to the structure of the rack, the car remains controllable even in the event of a power steering breakdown, although the control becomes more complex, requiring the application of large forces. That is, the steering mechanism with a faulty power steering works as usual.
