Do-it-yourself Megan 2 steering rack repair

In detail: do-it-yourself Megan 2 steering rack repair from a real master for the site my.housecope.com.

Renault Megane I and II generations carry out the movement thanks to the rack and pinion mechanism. It is based on a long rack and pinion, which is driven by a pinion gear, which is connected to the wheel and sets it in motion.

If an additional knock appears in the plastic supports, engagement, or somewhere else, then while driving, especially on rough roads, the driver will realize that the steering rack is making knocks. Before starting work, you should familiarize yourself with some videos that will show a detailed sequence of actions, as well as purchase a repair kit. It will help to repair minor damage.

  • Knocking may occur if all fasteners are not sufficiently fixed. The banal tightening of bolts and nuts will help remove the knock;
  • If the support sleeve is worn on either side;
  • If the bushing is corroded, a knock can easily occur. The solution to the problem is a complete change of the rail, otherwise the knock will only intensify and the repair will not help;
  • If the anthers and rack teeth are worn;
  • If the sleeve is worn due to the use of too soft material that was used in its manufacture. Due to the operation of Renault on bad roads, this part deforms even faster and an annoying knock appears. The solution to the problem is the turning of a new part from a stronger material than the original one, for example, caprolon. But in order to properly machine a new part, use the drawing, which shows the exact dimensions.

If you cannot determine that the problem is in the rail, then after watching the video, you will understand how it knocks.

  • To carry out work on tightening the rail on Renault, you need a lift. First, you need to remove the protection using a short ring wrench for 12 or a wrench with a flexible eyeliner.
  • Above the Renault Megan subframe, feel for the adjusting bolt with your hand. Using a 12mm wrench, try to tighten this bolt.
  • Carry out the tightening in stages: each time check by turning the steering wheel in different directions, whether extraneous sounds and knocks have gone or not. Pull up until they disappear.
  • Tighten accordingly until the knock disappears. Tighten in moderation, otherwise the steering wheel will be difficult to rotate.

To eliminate knocking, as well as to change, restore or repair parts of the rack mechanism, a repair kit is needed. The minimum toolkit in order to change the details of the rail, which should be equipped with a repair kit: gearbox, bushings,
oil seals, gaskets, grease (salidol, lithol, WD-40) and a set of wrenches.

The original repair kit is expensive, so you can use another one - take it from other foreign cars. But before using a repair kit from other manufacturers and starting a replacement / repair, consult with experts in this field, and then create or supplement an existing repair kit, if any.

The bushing is changed by two people. To carry out repairs, use a small gas wrench, because. the big one won't fit. To save money, you can machine a new sleeve yourself using an existing or your own drawing, which indicates the dimensions of the part.
  1. Raise Megan with the jack. Substitute under the wheels "shoes". From the side on which the defect is revealed, unscrew the wheel. Using the wrench, unscrew the steering knuckle. Lubricate the nut with a “liquid” wrench if it does not lend itself.
  2. After removing the tip, turn the steering wheel as far as possible and cut off the plastic collars of the anther. Subsequently, it is better to change them to metal ones.Remove the handpiece nut, the handpiece itself and the rail boot without applying excessive force.
  3. Loosen the drawbar with a wrench. Climb down into the hole if the car is jacked up and attach the wrench to the lower arm while pulling it down. Ask an assistant to tighten the gas key each time.
  4. When the rod is removed, you will see the sleeve, which you need to change. To do this, use a long screwdriver. Put an assistant behind the wheel so that he “steering” in different directions. Thus, it will help in extracting the desired part.
  5. The sleeve is easy to remove, but be careful not to break it, so as not to waste time extracting the remains. Install the new part, lubricate it and assemble all the parts in reverse order.
  6. After the work is done, it is imperative to send Megan for wheel alignment!

If the replacement / repair of parts is carried out correctly, then the knock will disappear. But if you are not completely confident in your abilities and there is no desire to overpay the masters either, rely on the video and note some nuances for yourself.

The repair kit will not help if the rack and pinion parts are badly worn and it is impossible to avoid replacing them as an assembly. The manufacturer strongly recommends using the original repair kit to be sure that the parts will fit exactly.

To completely change the entire structure, the repair kit will not work.
