In detail: do-it-yourself repair of the steering rack of a Mercedes 210 from a real master for the site my.housecope.com.

Had the UNHAPPY to carry out the procedure of replacing his knocking rail with the "restored" one from the above-mentioned person. I was lured by the price of the issue: $ 200. + my rake offset + $ 30 installation (against $ 300 ... 350 for a used rail) and the thought that the rail was sorted out and its residual resource is higher than that of the used one.

After installation, everything seemed to be fine; but having traveled for a week, light knocks perceptible in the steering wheel began to appear. Moreover, after a long stay, especially in cool and damp weather, there are no knocks in the first hours of movement. But as soon as the car “drives around” the knocks appear again.
Thinking that this is most likely a suspension, I checked it with our common masters ... and they did not find anything on the suspension.

I drove up to the person who installed this rail for me - he firmly believes in the infallibility of his own work and talks about gears, about how all this should work correctly, etc. ... at the same time, he also invited a specialist who had once been trained by the officials (on Hoffman, it seems) and together with him checking the suspension, they did not find anything either ...

Now I go and wait for this knock to come out - I hope that this will happen before the expiration of the 3-month warranty on the rail.

So replacing the rail with a restored one is a very controversial event. I recommend thinking three times ...

At its core, a Mercedes steering rack is a mechanical device that transfers power from the steering wheel to the turning mechanisms of the car's wheels. Thanks to this, the wheels turn in the direction necessary for the driver.

A seemingly simple design consists of many details, the work of which is not so easy to understand. The steering rack Mercedes 210 - a system of springs with rods and tips - is not at all the simplest element of the vehicle structure.

The loss of responsiveness and information content of the steering may indicate the first signs of a malfunction and that the Mercedes 210 steering rack requires repair.

There are a number of other signs by which a malfunction can be determined. Usually, such breakdowns reveal themselves when driving on uneven roads, or when cornering. Then you can feel a backlash in the steering wheel, or a knock that gives into the driver's hands.

In order to continue to feel comfortable driving your car, you must immediately contact a car service. Experienced specialists will deal with this problem and help fix the breakdown.

The reliability of a car is determined not only by its technical characteristics, but also by how it is serviced by its owner. Repair of the Mercedes w210 steering rack may be required not only due to careless driving or some other similar situation, but also due to the fact that some parts have worn out and need to be replaced.

Of course, most often the steering rack of a Mercedes 210 suffers from increased loads during intensive maneuvering and driving on our, often uneven roads, or if you accidentally hit an obstacle.

For this mechanism to last longer, you need to carefully drive your vehicle and carry out regular maintenance.

The first stage of repair of any complexity is the correct diagnosis of the breakdown. In order to do this on your own, you will need a fairly voluminous baggage of knowledge and skills.

The car service always has the necessary tools and special equipment for diagnostics and testing, both of individual parts and of the entire mechanism.

After the diagnosis, a decision is already made about which parts are to be replaced and which repair kit is needed in this case. And, at times, the steering rack of a Mercedes 210 requires a complete replacement with a new one.

The steering rack adjustment of Mercedes-Benz w210 must be carried out at regular intervals. Do not wait until the first signs of malfunction begin to show themselves. It is best to do this in the off-season, or if necessary.

The w210 steering rack is a reliable element of the car, but it is also not alien to discord and breakdowns. In a car service, they will be able to help establish the normal operation of the steering unit and adjust it to the desired parameters.

An experienced master from a car service, using the available equipment, will be able to quickly carry out all the necessary work and return an already working mechanism.

The Mercedes W210 is controlled by a special mechanism - the steering rack. This device provides simultaneous turning of the front wheels of the vehicle with the steering wheel.

Failure of this mechanism can lead to an emergency on the road.

Of course, you can prevent many problems, but on condition that you pass scheduled checks at the service station on time, or contact experienced craftsmen in case of the slightest deviations in the operation of the car. But there are a number of breakdowns, the occurrence of which is impossible to predict. In particular, we are talking about malfunctions of the steering rack and its entire system.

The way the automotive industry works is that from time to time many parts have to be bought again. It is not profitable for manufacturers to create perfect cars that never break down. In the event of a breakdown, you can contact our workshop, where professionals will take over the repair of your car. Image - DIY Mercedes 210 steering rack repair

So, the steering rack of the Mercedes 210, like many other parts of the car, tends to break. What could be the reason for the breakdown of this mechanism:

  • Wear on the teeth in the connection between the gear and the gear base of the device. This part is the most loaded, respectively, and mainly breakdowns occur here. As a rule, most of the defects leading to tooth wear can be corrected by adjusting the nut;
  • Mechanical deformation of the teeth in the mount between the rack rack and pinion. In this case, it is necessary to replace the rack or gear;
  • The tie rod end is deformed or worn out. In the event of such a malfunction, you will need to notice the details.

As a rule, all these details are checked during scheduled inspections. If you suddenly have a breakdown associated with the above reasons, then you can contact us for help.

How long it will last and how soon it will be necessary to repair the steering rack of a Mercedes 210 depends directly on the quality of the roads on which you drive. As you know, in our country there are big problems with the road surface. With frequent driving on low-quality roads, the car may experience a breakdown associated with the steering, which can be determined by the following signs:
  • The formation of a specific knock heard when driving in holes. When turned to the side, the sound is muffled or completely disappears;
  • When turning in different directions, the steering effort decreases;
  • The effort on the steering wheel disappears after returning to its original position;
  • When the car leaves the turn, the steering wheel does not return to its normal position;
  • The steering angle differs with the steering angle;
  • With a slight turn of the steering wheel, the car begins to throw from side to side;
  • A drop in the level of liquid in the tank for no reason.

Depending on the cause of the breakdown, our masters will carry out a number of necessary repair work. So, if you have no steering effort when cornering, then this may indicate that:

  • There is not enough liquid in the tank;
  • The working parts of the pump are worn out;
  • The belt is worn out;
  • Loose belt tension.

Having identified the exact cause of the problem, they eliminate it by adding fluid (if necessary), replacing the belt, installing a new pump, or, if possible, repairing the old one.

In the event that your car's wheel angle differs from the steering wheel angle, this may be a sign that either the W210 steering rack is not adjusted correctly, or the shaft crosses are worn out, or some parts of the chassis are worn out, or the distributor torsion shaft is damaged.

By contacting us with these problems, you can be sure that our masters will quickly and efficiently perform all the necessary repair work.

If you lose effort on the steering wheel in the initial position, then this indicates that the breakdown lies in the annular wear in the power cylinder housing. In this case, it is necessary to replace the old rail, since there is no point in repairing it. You will have to buy a new steering gear even if there is ring wear in the distribution part.

If, when operating the car on an uneven road, a specific creak is heard, then this indicates a breakdown, which lies in the deformation of the transverse shaft.

The reasons for the appearance of extraneous sounds may be as follows: the tank filter is clogged, the liquid level is low, the pressure in the system has dropped, the pump functionality has deteriorated, the hoses are deformed.

To fix the problem, our workers will replace the tank, refill or replace fluid, replace the pump and hoses; eliminate the causes of fluid leakage; will replace oil seals and other parts.

After you have driven the car to us, then the master:
  • Inspect the steering system of the machine;
  • Will carry out the dismantling of the steering rack;
  • Determine what the breakdown is and how much it will cost to repair;
  • Eliminate problems;
  • Carries out the installation of the steering rack;
  • Check the functionality of the system.
